NASCAR Busts: Brian Vickers (Hendrick Motorsports)

Спорт

Brian Vickers has a decent career as a journeyman driver. However, when he started at Hendrick Motorsports you could make the case he was a bust.

Tbh, RedBull coming to NASCAR was the best thing that ever happened to him. He got bought up after winning a title in the lower series but didn’t accomplish a lot until he was cut. He was then picked up by a new team where he was the key focus, could be developed properly and become a winner in time. He was kinda like the late 2000s Daniel Suarez. Who knows what would’ve happened is medical issues didn’t flare up.

I don't think people really consider how truly heartbreaking his story really is. I mean, his blood clots are ultimately what killed any chance he had of making a career resurgence. And it's a shame. People overlook this, though, because they're still salty about the 2006 Talladega finish, because anytime you wreck Dale Earnhardt Jr, it's automatically an intentional, immoral action that's the worst thing you can do as a human being besides worship the devil. 🙄 Look, I like Jr, but to say that at least 2/3 of his fan base was toxic is an understatement. The hypocritical thing about that is that many of them were basically recycled Dale Sr. fans. You know, the guy who made a career of wrecking people intentionally.

I was at that Talladega race in 2006, sitting on the backstretch grandstands, and that was the greatest thing my buddy and I had ever seen! All the fans were pissed. We were cheering. We knew about Hendrick shutting him out, so we thought it was awesome! Ironically enough, the next year we got to hang out with Brian in the infield at Talladega. I was wearing Red Bull gear. He and a few crew members gave us a case of Red Bull and pretty much hung out with is most of Friday night, saying we were the only Team Red Bull fans they had met. I got Brian’s autograph, but more importantly was the memories created. He is such an awesome, down to earth guy. We were laughing and having a great time.

Honestly knowing the surrounding circumstances of his last year with Hendrick I hope he wrecked Johnson on purpose. To have the gall to call him a teammate after you’ve publicly supported excluding him from drivers meetings is so hypocritical it’s not even funny. You can’t support taking away the privileges that come with being a teammate and then expect him to be ok with making the same sacrifices as everyone else.

Vickers had it rough. While I admit I really loved the bad temper he got in the early 10's (see: Martinsville, where he crashed no less than 6 times and would have probably done it again if NASCAR hadn't parked him), he did not have it made. While I never liked the way he got into the All-Star race in 2004, it's hard to blame him for what happened in 2006. I think he's the only one that _really_ knows if that crash was truly an accident, but when you look at everything going on at the time you can certainly sympathize with him. Overall, his career wasn't the greatest, but he certainly had a lot of things that made his efforts a lot more difficult than they had any right to be. Side note: I hope Alabama never changes. Hearing the crowd cheer "Bullshit!" during his interview is something special, even if I don't blame him.

I always thought Brian got an unfair rap based on his 2011 at Red Bull. The guy could drive when his head was right and his 2008 and 09 at Red Bull proved how good he was and could be. I thought his 2012 limited schedule with MWR also really impressed me at the time, he was up the front almost constantly. Unfortunately once his health started playing a role it hurt him long term. The opportunity to go to Joe Gibbs Racing in 2013 didn't work out as well as I thought it would, nor did the full time move to Michael Waltrip Racing. Things never quite worked out in his favour. No doubting he had talent, was just involved in too many incidents.

honestly vickers' biggest problem (at least in his rookie year) was not knowing where the limit was. he'd pump out insanely quick times in qualy but when it came to races, he would always find himself trying to do something that he physically couldn't do. i don't really think he ever found that limit as he continued to have that similar issue going down the road. and although personally, i don't think hendrick was necessarily a bad experience as he learned a lot from it, for someone like him it was never the right fit. had he not had multiple blood clots in the space of 3-5 years, leading to a stop-start career and eventually being forced to retire at 32, then i think we're talking about a driver with the floor of being consistent playoff driver (via win and in) with the ceiling of becoming someone consistently in and around the top5/10 and potentially contending for championships. in all honesty i think he'll forever be one of the greatest what ifs in the modern history of nascar simply because of the talent he showcased early on, and how little time he got to show it in a full-time capacity (only 7 full-time seasons despite having starts in 13).

Can usually guarantee that sparks fly when team mates crash into each other in motorsport. I remember in F1 in 2010, Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber crashed into each other while running first and second. Vettel, who was running in a faster engine mode than Webber, tried to overtake his team mate towards the end of lap 40, but inadvertently moved towards Webber's car before he was properly ahead, leading to the two of them colliding. The German was absolutely furious, letting rip on team radio upon his DNF that race: "***! What the **** are we doing here?! We're working to try to win the championship for **** sake! What a stupid action! I'm going home, **** you all!!"

Brian Vickers as a bust at Hendrick is kinda a stretch as he was solid in 2005 and 2006 sure he didn't win much but people forget Kyle Busch only won 3 times from 2005 to 2006 so it wasn't like Brian was a massive failure. Vickers was a solid driver maybe not a title contender but he could get the most out of his equipment as Vickers to me reminded me a lot of Johnny Benson with his driving style to when everything goes right he could be a top 10 points driver. Blood clots unjustly ruined the mans career but he wasn't as much of a bust as other drivers could be labeled as. The real busts in Cup would be the guys like Randy Lajoie or Casey Atwood or Kevin Lepage or David Stremme. Vickers to me was solid and the only real issue I have with him is his post racing career with his wife and ties to Epstein. Brian had to know quite a bit of that and that's not a good look at all.

Bust???? If Vickers had retired in 2006(after Hendrick) I would agree, but he didn't. Vickers won some poles, had some good runs, won a few races, AND even won the Busch title! Even Dale Jr couldn't win with Lance McGrew. Who knows what could've been if not for Red Bull closing and the blood clots later in his career. Wanna hear a bust? JJ Yeley! Now THAT'S a bust.

Upcoming busts: Hailie Deegan. So far in 40 races with only 2 top 10 finishes. She was hyped beyond oblivion before she entered the truck series, so much so Nascar put her name in the FullReplay of her debut race. But the only time you know she is in the race is when she is involved in someone else's crash.

14:00 That race would've came down to Vickers and Johnson depending on what the 25 decided to do at the checkered flag but overall I didn't think Vickers was a bust. He had his moments and fair share of crashes.

*Ok here's the truth about Brian Vickers getting Ricky Hendrick's ride:* Brian was only recommended that ride because he was Ricky's best friend. It's like how many feel about how Denny Hamlin got the 11 in Cup, but more problematic (At least short term). If Ricky didn't retire from racing, Brian would have *never* had a career in NASCAR as his Dad's team would have shut down after 2002... & I feel that would have a lot of changed things, for the better. *If Ricky didn't retire & Brian didn't get that ride:* Brian wouldn't be in the sport much longer now knowing his driving history & record. He only had 1 Top 10 in 21 starts in 2002 in the Busch Series, & even then the race where he accomplished that was controversial for him _(Vickers wrecked & injured another driver)_ & gave us only a taste of who Vickers would become in racing... More importantly, I feel Ricky would probably still be alive, returning home from a Busch race at Memphis the previous day or maybe already being at Martinsville to race, instead of going to spot for Vickers at Martinsville the following day... but never making it. _Who knows:_ Maybe Ricky still being with us would have made Vickers different as a person & not just a driver, but we'll never know... Ricky was a good person, & I feel a good racer. But sadly, Brian Vickers is the Achilles Heel to his entire legacy. Brian Vickers will always be an overall bust to me, & not just a "Hendrick Bust" either.

He wasn't a bust. Busts are drivers that that don't live upto the hype. Can anyone say Danica. Maybe the biggest bust (no pun intended) in nascar if not in all sports. Amazing how good looks and a major sponsorship overrides talent.
