I'm assuming that for 400hz the eq and bias settings are not as critical .For recording calibration is better to adjust the controls for the correct tape type ( they were set for metal tape) Other than that I enjoyed your video.

Very interesting video. I’ve had that imbalance problem on some of my decks but I have to adjust it by the level metres not having an oscilloscope.

To be honest it'll probably only be a fault at the playback stage, and the levels will most likely be fine. Truthfully the levels on this deck were probably totally fine. But I wanted to demonstrate the proper calibration method before I corrected the playback. I suspect the playback levels here were a result of aged heads. There isn't really a lot that can age and affect the levels on the deck itself. I've not really seen a deck yet that truly required a level cal unless they have been messed with previously

I’m in the process of calibrating Nakamichi DR3. Just one question re the meter calibration (1st step). When I adjust the record level dial to read 500mV at the output on one channel the other channel reads different. Am I to assume I need to adjust the record level for each channel independently to reach the desired 500mV? Hope that makes sense 😬

From memory yes, just follow the steps in the service manual but do them *in order*. Good luck!

I had a CR1A... And I regret selling it. I tried my hand at calibration... Went so far as to get the software version of the nakamichi t100 audio analyzer. By the grace of God.. because I was tweaking it for hours... Got this deck fine tuned so well for TDK D, SA and MA that it just sounded like the heavens opened. Maxell, Sony... Holy crap... I goty hands on another one... And because I took pictures of my adjustments I'll try and get as close to those settings and levels as possible. I had no idea how truely remarkable these CR series decks are. I have a 1A and 2A. Hope to tune them to God. LOL

on the last calibration on playback levels shoulnt you measure at the output jacks the ac voltage the levels you adusted are now the same but didn't you adjust one channel to match the other? you could turn one up or the other down but ave yu the correct voltage at the output jacks ?

Yes I did do exactly that - however I couldn't manage to hold both probes and then video the multimeter 😄 must try harder

Nakamichi - this is my unfulfilled dream. But maybe in the future everything is possible

Quindi il problema di questo CR-1 deriva da un non perfetto stato della testina,che hai compensato con la ricalibratura dei trimmer del playback level.come giustamente hai detto,possono essere vari motivi,testine,condensatori,oppure qualcuno che e' andato attorno alle calibrazioni o all'azimuth credendo di farcela,e invece stara tutto.mi e' capitato tra le mani un teac V-970X dove l'ex proprietario aveva fatto un disastro a tutti i trimmer,per ricalibrare tutto son diventato matto!

Sometimes they are so very very difficult to calibrated especially when they are a two head deck. Recording and playing back becomes tedious to check your work!
