Marantz 5000 1970s Cassette Deck - Belts, Light Service & Calibration

I recently got this lovely Marantz 5000 cassette deck in from the 1970s. It's build quality and design are top shelf, watch as I replace gummy belts, perform a light service and electrically calibrate it's operations.

The reason the dolby symbols are at +2 vu is if you calibrate the machine using a dolby level test cassette at 200nWb/m (ansi)the meters should read on the dolby mark, not 0vu. 0vu is 160nWb/m.(din) on these old machines. The meters should only be calibrated in record mode injecting a signal into the machine at 1khz and monitor the output at the test points to correspond to the manual. If the meters are off at the correct level then you adjust the meters then. This is explained in the manual. If you calibrate at dolby level +2 then you multiply the level in the manual at 0vu by 1.3625 to give the level at dolby. ie if the manual suggests 480mv out at 0vu you multiply 480x1.3625 to give you 654mv at the dolby level. Machines that don't have the dolby mark on the meters (Nakamichi) are dolby level at 0vu 200nWb/m. If tapes made on a nak are played in the Marantz they should be hitting the dolby mark.

I really enjoyed watching that as it reminded me of myself all through the 90's, when I had my own electronic repair business. I still do repairs but I've changed employment since then.

Ha no, thanks for letting me know - it all seemed good this end. Turned out I had a copyright claim which seemed to have messed up the audio. Hoping I can get a way to demo repairs and yet use uncooyeighted music. Time will tell, it's one thing after another 😅

I ended up measuring the old one and ordering a generic replacement. I can't remember what size it was but they're listed by outside diameter / width / axle diameter. For example 13x11x2mm. Good luck! They're available on fixyouraudio.com

That is a gorgeous looking deck, and the music near the end sounds great. Not trying to tell you how to suck eggs, but when calibrating the VU output, wouldn't it be easier to record a 3000hz test tone at 0 dB, then you would have a nice steady tone to work with when adjusting the pots?

Could you tell me the belt lengths, I have a Marantz CD-314 which uses the same main deck and looking to get hold of belts to replace main drive, ff/rewind and tape counter.

If you were setting azimuth, for 0db vu meter position, with the test tape, and they didnt match, how do you know its the meters that need adjusting and not the output pot. on the board for that channel? Enjoy your videos by the way.👍

I can't remember the specifics for this one but generally I get them to match by azimuth and then adjust the playback pots by oscilloscope later. Usually in a service manual azimuth is the first thing to check

I really enjoy your videos. But for someone who is not used to your accent, you really need not to mumble into your beard. You need a better microphone. Sorry for picking nits, but I watched and didn't listen because I couldn't understand what you were saying half the time...

I totally agree I just wish I could grow a beard! I've been working on it. It's difficult when it's my accent, but hopefully if you have a look at a more recent video, I've got better. But I'll always take constructive criticism! 😀

Hola!!!
