Oil change in less 10000km . Very good synthetic oil . This is the doctor for that. GREAT JOB!

Thanks so much for these videos - very clear, well made and informative. You are one of the few channels that covers the N42/N46 engine - most seem to focus on the 6 cylinder engines. I have an E46 Coupe with the N46B20 engine - it has been completely reliable for 93,000 miles and is VERY smooth for a 4 cylinder unit. For me, the most important thing to do with these engines is regular oil changes. With Valvetronic and VANOS, the heads are complicated and very dependent on good lubrication. I do an oil/OEM filter change every 5,000 miles with 5W 30 fully synthetic oil (Castrol) and it's paid dividends in performance and reliability. Thanks again for these excellent videos and looking forward to the next one!

Yup.. if you shorten the oil change intervals these engines can be reliable. The chain tensioner/rail is still a problem and in my opinion should be replaced after 15 years or 200.000km. Congrats on having a good one;)

@@BimmerZen Good point on the chain tensioner/rail. On the VANOS units, what are the main symptoms that they are in need of refurbishment or replacement on these engines?

@@peterastley-sparke7526 My understanding is that they fail to hold required position so the ECU tries to control the oil flow to compensate. This results in uneven VANOS timing position, and even rattle. Basically if you have constant chain rattle, reduced mid range torque/power and hesitation on acceleration. Ideally you would observe the VANOS position and see if it stays constant or if it floats around during mid range power requirement (this is when camshaft timing change is required).

Just change the whole ''vanos gear'' like I did and my car stopped rattling. on 99% it would be exhaust side not intake its typical on n42/n46 (I bought new from ebay for 100€)

What would happen if you sand down that aluminium side of vanos with 2000-3000grit ? That can maybe fix the problem. I'm thinking of doing that becouse i have the same problem with the rattle. Also my intake vanos value in inpa is around 108.5. Is that normal ?

Love your videos! 2 Questions, can a bad VANOS make your car have almost no compression? and, Would a few a pieces of different grades of "sand" paper on a knowingly true flat surface whilst running the aluminium part shave it down instead of a lathe? 3rd bonus question, oops, I timed a BMW 120i, it wont start and sounds weird when trying, I I watched your videos so I think its perfectly timed, I checked many times and I am assuming the valves have bounced...I want to give the girl it back working but I am afraid I cant, have valves on a n46 bounced on you? I thank you for all your content so far including any reply you might give me.

hmm on all cyliders ? did you do a compresson test or do you just feel it not having compression?i whould check witch cylinder it is because its probably just one and check that the torsion springs are ok and valve seals

Vanos probably has no effect on compression it should be rather bad valves maybe burnt valve if u burning oil on n42/n46 because on these engines is problematic valve stem seals and if long time will drop oil on these valves it could burnt it... and if this is not your problem then piston rings or head gasket is bad

Thats why I'm changing every 10k km oil on this engine (N46B20) and valve stem seals is often a problem on these too, almost everyone have problem with burning oil on these engines due to valve stem seals.... problem with vanos rattling of exhaust side of vanos gear is often too.... I put 2500€ to this stupid engine in 4 years so I know.
