That explains why I was able to do 600+ kms with two teeth jumped on the intake VANOS, on my n42b20 318ci. Thanks for the experiment!

Well that's weird, my old engine failed as the guide broke. Still not quite sure what happened, opened the old engine and saw that a part of the exhaust vanos unit was torn. I'm guessing it somehow broke off and then broke the guides. Or the plastic broke and that broke off the metal vanos cover. But that sounds less logical to me. But then again, no forces should be concentrated at that metal cover so I don't know. The engine is out of time horribly, at least the cams are off in relation to each other. Dunno, I'm not even an amateur level mechanic lol. I was led to believe by the shop that the chain had broken and the engine was basically totaled. But based on this it seems it would've been fine after a new chain, a vanos unit and a retime. I didn't know better at the time, I have only started watching your teardowns after I got a new engine and its chain installed by the shop. Miraculously didn't have to pay that much in the end. Watching because the new engine has some kind of knocking, at exactly 800 (so idle) and 2000rpm (±50 rpm in either direction it stops). Shop guessed the location of the noise to be intake valvetronic. Makes sense to me since it only does it after warming up, and disconnecting a solenoid or the eggsshaft sensor fixes the noise. They didn't want to try fixing that though, the engine had been problematic and costly enough for them haha. They assumed it would be just fine to drive with it. Couldn't find an identical case to mine on any forums. Most are either only at idle or between 2000-2500rpm. While my rpm range for the noise occuring is way smaller. Anyway, this gives me hope that maybe I could use the old engine for spare parts if I start trying to disagnose the knocking. Swapping the solenoids and the vvt motor should be good starting point :)

N43 is an evolution of the N45/N46 engine, but it is direct injection, so i'm not 100% sure if it is non-interference. I don't know for the N43:(

Hey bimmerzen! I have a question, i did my timing chain on the n46. But i bent the flywheel locking pin and i cant get it out. (Its not hitting the flywheel so i dont mind it being there). But is there any way i can get my timing right because i tried with the screwdriver in silinder 1 just about tdc by eye, but the engine wont run.

Hmm, you shoul be able to time the engine by determening the TDC on first cylinder through the spark plug hole. Did you check that all connectors are connected? Did you try to check for any error codes? Next thing would be to remove the valve cover and check that the timing is actually correct. Set engine in TDC on first cylinder, and then check camshaft orientation.

Hi BimmerZen! Sorry in advance for a long and boring question. I recently followed your chain rail guide procedure to fix an N42 engine. Engine runs very smoothly and does not rattle, but I noticed that the lowdown power (below 2500rpm) is missing. That being said, I bought the car with the issue, so I have no idea how this engine felt before. When I had tigthened the new vanos bolts and turned the crank 2 rotations and inserted flywheel pin, both camshafts were lining up well in the back, but the impulse gear was not 100% flush ( I think maybe 1mm gap) with the cylinder head on the left side, looking at engine from the front of the car. Values read out on Carly was around 80 for intake sensor and 114 for exhaust (unless it was opposite, cant quite remember). Could this cause the issue with the low power, or should I be looking elsewhere for an explanation? Your videos were very helpful, and I have you to thank for even thinking about fixing the engine, so thanks a lot!

I actually had the same problem with my engine. But also needed to do the valve stem seals. So I got a new head and prepped it. When I removed the old head. I discovered that one of my header ports got clogged. Still dont know why it happened but that made it feel down low like I was missing a cilinder in power. After the clean up of the headers it seems that i have all my power. Except it seems something is still not right. Hope you find your issue.

VANOS position for intake should be around 120 and for the exhaust about 55 deg. 1 mm of offset on the timing should translate to about 117 on the intake. Check the timing again and make sure the VANOS units are locked in initial position when checking with front locking tools.

@@BimmerZen Right, I'll keep that in mind! Did some testing today, 0-100 is around 13s, while it should be about 11s. So definitely down on power. It also seems to run a bit rich, as fuel consumption is a little on the high side for a 1.8 I think..

@@BimmerZen That's great news , thanks The reason I ask is because my oil pump failed, my son kept driving for half an hour with the oil light on . Now the exhaust cam shaft has burnt out the main journals at the rear of the shaft closest to the vacuum pump and the lifters etc are rattling really badly (sounds like a diesel truck). I couldn't find a N46 cylinder head anywhere but I can get lots of N42 heads. I've followed your videos quite a few times now, valve stem oil seals, timing chain replacement, and quite a few others. Your channel is UNDOUBTABLY THE BEST on KZread as far as repairs go on N42/N46 engines. Without your VAST knowledge I would have given up and sold my car for scrap. Thanks so much,

I really want a BMW N42B20 engine assembly manual in Thailand in the city where I live. There is no garage that can make machines. So I'll try to do it myself. Because there are many friends who use BMW as well, or do you have your email address? In order to keep in touch and talk. If it's not too disturbing. thank you very much
