Finally.. Someone who knows this engine!! Great video. I now know I have the fuel injectors and NOK sensor issue to sort on my E90 320i (mental vibrations from the engine), might swap out the Timing chain as well. Expensive car to maintain I have already done the diff and electric waterpump, both failed at very low mileage. Thanks Again👍👍👍

Hi mate, nice video, very informative. I only wish I'd watched this a month ago. To cut a long story short, 2 weeks ago my dad bought 2011 e90 318i (N43 engine). We took it for test drive, faultless. Drove it back home 80 miles and it was sweet as a nut. Parked it up outside the house and left it half an hour or so. Started it up, pulled it on the driveway, revved it a couple of times and it started knocking like you wouldn't believe! Initial thought was bottom end. The looking on youtube it had VERY similar diagnosis to air con pulley or any pulley noise for that matter. Further inspection and releasing the belt proved it wasnt a pully, much to our dismay. We drained the oil, fearing the worst (expecting metal particles etc, but no, oil was clean, filter too). Then when I mentioned to a mechanic friend the car had a new clutch allegedly fitted before my dad bought it he said possible dual mass? Changed the oil and filter and fired it up, the knocking noise again! Then as it warmed up... it went silent and sounded like a Swiss watch! Exactly like when we took it for a test drive and the 80 mile journey home. Then, when pushing the clutch pedal in and out and moving the car backwards and forwards, the noise became apparent again. What's your thoughts? New clutch fitted with old fly wheel? Knackered flywheel? Knackered clutch and flywheel? Like I said, it drove back 80 miles sweet as a nut. If it is the flywheel and or clutch... how many hours SHOULD it take to replace and which manufacturer of parts do you recommend? Obviously BMW will be ridiculous. I know a few people capable of doing the job, albeit a tough one. Any advice would be much appreciated, cheers mate.

Nice explanation about our engine. With 195k km my inyectors failed and i got rough idle and bad running first minutes (they were index 3 and were changed for index 11). Also chain was loose and needed to replace (tensioner and guide as well). Also changed ignition coils and spark plugs. Now runs perfect, but Nox sensor is next... This engine needs a lot of care, as well as some ista or inpa software to "read" it.

I had most of the problems he discribed, i had bad injectors that caused a misfire in 3 cilinders. I did not know at the time so i replaced the sparkplugs and ignition coils, it did help with how smooth the engine was running but when the car was idling it still misfired. 3 months after that i would hear 3 seconds of rattaling when i started the car, soon after that i would get low oil pressure warnings on my dashboard if my car was reving above 4,5k after that i was driving on the highway and lost power, alot of white smoke came out of the exhaust i knew that it was either a head gasket leak or bad injectors but i think it was a combination of all the problems i just named above. I took it to a bmw specialist they took apart the engine cleaned all the oil chanals replaced the vannos, timingchain and rails, all the injectors, and all the damaged parts of the engine because i drove it with a low oil presure i also repaced all the gaskets it ended up costing me 3000 euro to fix all this. This was 6 months ago and i did not have any problems yet but this engine is a nightmare i would stay away from it. I also know some of this could be prevented if i figured out the problems sooner and took it to a garage but an engine is not suposed to fail in such way. Ps sorry for my spelling faults

My 16th car. E88 n43b20. Bought it 7 months before with 118k km. Since i bought it (11k km) i have changed: All 3 Oxygen sensors Nox sensor Coolant thermostat Did the valve cover seal (always use reizonsil anthracite and wait 10hours - it will last longer) Changed spark plugs twice. Changed ign coils twice. Changed injectors to index 11 Cleaned vanos solenoids Changed coolant with oem bmw (not expensive) Of course cleaned maf and throttle body Reset engine and throttle adaptations several times using my Thinkdiag+ Also watching short and long fuel trims and fuel rail pressure through car scanner app and vgate pro bluetooth obd. My advice is that: 1. only ngk bkr7a-htu plugs 2. better buy delphi ign coils because the rubber sleeve on Bosch ones is getting damaged very easily. 3. Watch long fuel trims on startup and when heated at idle, 1.5k rpm and 2.5k rpm. If there is significant variation between bank 1 and bank 2 ones, then visit a bmw specialized repair center. 4. change injectors to index 11 because there are large batches of index 12 which are coming from China. 5. Clean the ign coil grounds (brown wires screwed on the engine block) using 800 grit sandpaper. Many thanks for the informative video.

The last documented repair it had was with 110.000 where the camshaft sensor had to be replaced. Oil was changed every year between 8tkm and 15tkm Fuel usage is sitting at 8.5/100KM, I believe that it could be an litre lower but my OBD doesn't say anything about NOX or anything so Im just living with it

My guy here shook me when i heard him say Trinidad, that's where I'm from, my dad has the only 2009 E90 320i m sport model, and tbh he isn't showing it the love it needs, he used to drive a camry, so it worries me a lot, he waits until some fault or the engine light shows up on the dashboard, that's what a lousy Camry driver does, not what a car enthusiast does, and he still takes sharp turns likes he's driving a slow ass FWD car, i told him that since it's a RWD car u shouldn't completely let off the gas, because while u give a rwd car 25% of gas while entering a turn it helps u turn sharper.

@@sciencegod1 after I bought it and spent a good amount of money on some known issues, it holds ok. I’ve driven 40.000kms on this car which now stands at around 175.000km, oil and gas consumption went up (clogged catalytic converters from burned oil), 2 of the ignition coils went in a better place while driving at the same time, some of the front end steering parts failed but is normal wear and tear. Overall I would say it’s ok if you make sure to spend some money on preventive maintenance.

Any thoughts on this engine reliability when baby'd? I don't race or drive harsh as it just gets me 10km to work and back daily. I let it warm up a bit every start and just cruise in it. Do you think the engine is simply not cut out for lead footed drivers? Is it the engine being driven hard that throws all these faults or is it inherently flawed no matter how you drive it?

Hi, please help 🙏 BMW 320i Coupe, 125 kW (manuf 06.2008). I've had an engine failure for many years, where the yellow engine symbol starts flashing on the panel, and the car starts shuddering and the motor sounds starts squeaking and it no longer gives power properly. And starts smelling of burned if kept running. But then if it rests a few hours, most times it continues to work fine, other times the issue persists. When I took it to the official BMW service, they deleted the registers and said the car was fine. So I took it to my local repair shop. I've had 2 inyectors replaced, but one keeps failing even after putting a new one (nr. 3). Also a couple of ignition coils and spark plugs have been replaced for the same 2 cylinders. Apparently, at first the gasoline was spilling out and leaking into the oil deposit. The only TEMPRORARY fix has been a FULL firmware upgrade to the car's system. But it suffered the same engine problem again 6 months after that. This failure has happened more than 6 times throughout the past 10 years. And even when it's supposedly fixed, the motor is rough on idle and the car always shudders a bit, and when starting the motor, sometimes I hear a cracking noise like something is clashing, probably "engine knocking", which also happens when I tap the accelerator between 2000 and 1000 rpm, especially when starting to move on an upward slope, and starts smelling of burned if I do the same over and over; but the mechanics say this cracking noise and unstable idling is unrelated to the engine failure, and it's just the age of the car (2008 car). But I think it's all the same problem. The car used to be driven by my parents, who always drove it at very low rpm. But I've been driving it for 2 years at high rpms, most of the times I use gears to 5500 when accelerating, so it should not be accumulating soot inside the motor. I've asked for a motor cleaning, but the mechanic said it wasn't necessary on gasoline motors. I did have to replace my NOx sensor too last year. I have all the problems that were mentioned in the first few minutes of this video 😥 I don't know what to think, this seems like there is no solution. Can I put a "compatible" motor into this car from another brand or even a better one from BMW?

You need coding, in order to reset the adaptions from the old sensor. That way ECU will know there is a new NOX sensor, which will also affect the engine performance (positively).

Hi Doctor, all what you mentioned is correct. I have 118i with N43B20A and fortunately in mine the injectors were changed still while on warranty by the dealer. The car is owned and used only by my father since new and has done only 30K miles. It's well maintained and oil changed frequently minimum once a year. Now unfortunately I definitely need to change the NOx sensor. It now was already verified so we know it for sure. I don't want to buy the one from the dealer as it is so expensive. I would like to find some proper one equivalent from other manufacturers. Should I buy the complete set sensor with electronic box or can I only buy the sensor itself and connect ti my electronic box which is in good working condition. Please advise which sensor to buy and where I can buy it, the relatively good one and reliable. Please help. Kind Regards, Mike

Is there a way to permanently turn off the auto start-stop on the BMW 320i Coupe? The button only works until I turn off the car (with the key). Sometimes it has remembered the setting, but then I take it to the garage and when they give it back, the setting no longer stores itself in the memory. I've asked the mechanic to save this setting and he says it's not possible, that the firmware enforces it for environmental purposes. This is so confusing how sometimes the settings stays and others (maybe with different firmware versions?) it doesn't?!

When engine reaches higher temperature the idle speed is decreased to 650 and starts shaking the engine... If I let the engine at idle for long time then it turns off cylinder 1 injection. I delete the fault code -29CD - the injection turn on again in cylinder 1. I have only one fault code is on alltime: 2EF7 thermostat. Is here any relation with it? Anyone who has any suggestion please? Why happen it at warm engine? I replaced ignition coils, and plugs. Injectors are originals. But I really dont understand if I have an injector problem, why arent there fault codes or engine light, and why not faulty alltime? Please someone help me. Great video! I'm italian and I'm temporarily living in USA. I decided to bring over my 2007 BMW E93, with the N43 engine (now 80.000 km). Since my car landed in USA I started to have issues: first the four ignition coils, second an engine light due to the nox sensor (that I didn't replace) and then, after a year, the four injectors (seems that the engine light triggered by the nox sensor doesn't show up anymore, after the injectors have been replaced). I've always been sceptical about the gasoline quality over here, even if I've always used the highest grade, the 93. Do you have any suggestion on how to survive here at least for another couple of years? Any precoutionary measures to be taken? Thank you very much!

Just don't go for an automatic, it makes the whole thing thirsty and the GM automatic is also rubbish in reliability. The ZF one is good at least at that.

3,5 years with E91 LCI 318i and I've really had enough. I do only 5k miles per year on average and the sodden crap can't manage even 8-9 months without having something broken. And no, not due to poor maintenance, I've always maintained my cars very well and frequently. E.g. oil change every 4-6k miles with high quality oil and fuel system cleaning with high quality fuel system cleaner designed for direct injection in this case. In 3,5 years and around 16k miles (from 109k to 125k miles) having to do the following repairs (besides the usual maintenance): - 4 new injectors, á 400 € - 4 new ignition coils, á 30 € - One new A/C pipe, 250 € incl. emptying and refilling the A/C - one broken ABS ring, 50 € for the pair of sensors and rings - one blower motor, 80 € - blower motor frozen solid (yes, the new one!) every winter starting from -15 °C down - camshaft position sensor, exhaust side - desulphurisation of NOx sensor, fortunately have managed by driving, no new sensor needed YET - thermostat housing, the old one had cracked, 0 € due to happening so soon after buying the car from the dealership. Summary: If you want a reliable car, stay away from this heap of junk.

Been running this one (n43b20a) in my 320i E92 for some time now (1.5yr), already done my coils (4), sparks (twice), vacuum pump, noX sensor and some cover gaskets. Other than that, it runs really well and doesn't sound that bad at all - at least while driving. I get around 10.5-11.5 litres petrol in the city and around 7.5-8 when out. Still running on the first timing chain tho, now at 220.000km, replaced the tensioner with a newer one (last revision), but I'm planning to do a full timing chain setup brand new this year as it's not that expensive when buying parts yourself and doing service somewhere else instead of the dealers. Two things annoy me the most about this engine, okay - three. 1st - lifter tick, no matter what you do, how you drive it or what oil grade you use, that clicking sound will get you, 2nd - I sometimes get a red oil pressure light although the oil is on max, no codes, and the timing chain isn't to hear from at all, I guess the oil pump is planning to say something to me pretty fast, and 3rd - the engine runs rather hot, so you better check that coolant level and quality regularly. I mean, I don't really find it that notorious at all, at least when compared with a N47, and oil changes between 8-10.000kms, it is really possible to run on first chain even on high kms such as 200.000+.

Hey guys. I have a BMW 2011 318i E90. Recently after driving it i noticed a red engine light half filled in appear on the dash. I got the car scanned it came back to be a engine oil pressure control static code. Prior to this recently i did top up the car with 5W40 as it was low by a litre or so. I have a leak at the oil filter housing gasket next to the oil cooler. Has anybody else experienced this problem similar to mine and if so how did you fix this issue ? Was it because of the wrong grade of oil used or becuase of the leak at the oil filter housing ?

hey, while I did not get the engine light I do get the oil pressure static code from time to time. I also have a rough idle once in a while and I am also using 5W40. I bought a new OE 11417584990 hydraulic valve but did not replace it yet, together with the oil filter & oil cooler gaskets as they are also leaking. Did you find a fix for your issue?

Still i'd prefer the n42 as a 2L because it's just naturally aspirated, means that yes it uses more fuel but these kind of engines are just more reliable. Point.

Hard to believe some of the comments on here. I'm certain many of the haters are under 30 years old and bought the cheapest oldest E9x or 1 series BMW with the largest rims, did not check its maintenance or history, and beat the hell out the car , only to then complain that it leaks or misfires... When I see N43 cars for sale, you can tell what kind of owner are selling them, cheap budget tyres, DIY repairs, non genuine parts, and all the rest of their 'maintenance' is spent on LED light or 19 inch wheel upgrades ...it's no wonder why the 15 year old engine gets a bad rep now...

My N43 318i developed bottom end engine damage not long after I bough it….suspect some of the plastic timing chain guides to blame being drawn into engine - Nox sensor and injecyors are new but cost a ton to repair and i doubt that’ll be the end !

Why no ...W40 oils? I read in a lot of BMW forums and have private contact with the engineering and development department from SHELL. The overall recommendation for the N43 is a 0w40 full synthetic with advanced additive package BECAUSE of the problems with the chain. 0w for better lubrication of the chain/chain parts on short distances where the oil isn't getting to its working temperature properly and the 40 for a buffer of viscosity when theres a case with loosing oil pressure.

I would have the same question. I was about to replace my 5w30 with 5w40 because oil pressure and oil lost.
