Great review Brandon! Hilarious lighthearted dig on Coop! I have the Bowflex adjustable dumbells and they're good, but I wanted something like those you reviewed here for several reasons. First, the adjustable mechanism is great since you're already putting your hands on the handle! Mine you have to turn dials on either end. Second, these look much more compact from end to end and mimic standard dumbells in that regard. There's always going to be play on anything adjustable AFAIK, but there's give and take with most everything.

I've been using these for 3-4 months now. No issues so far. I agree that I am nervous they may get damaged if dropped onto a hard surface. Overall very happy with them.

@@adeep187 I think you're right. For what I paid for mine I wouldn't be dropping them anywhere but back into their cradles/stand. I am pleasantly surprised with the quality of my Nuobells..... gottem about 1 month ago.

THIS. I owned ironmaster dumbbells and practicality wise, they were just inconvenient to change them inbetween workouts and definitely made me stay away from super sets or drop reps. Sold em, got nuo dumbbells with addition heavier dumbbells that i needed, havent looked back since. Plus, its really hard to even get your hands on ironmaster even now.

I just ordered these. I was torn between these and powerblock Sport exp 90s and I couldn’t find the stage 2 anywhere for those at the moment. So I went with these. I like that these are small for the lower weight and gain size with weight unlike some that are full size no matter what weight is loaded. I also like that there is no cage for them like a powerblock. I’ve been lifting for probably 20 years and I’ve never dropped a dumbbell. My weight lifting coaches always said if you can’t put them down, don’t pick them up. I did however order with the 3 year extended warranty. Well worth it with newer devices made with plastic. I don’t really think 80lbs is gonna cut it but it’s better to have these and some 90s, 100s, 110s and 120s than 5-120 in dumbells. I’ve used the iron masters too. They are nice but still not as convenient as these or powerblocks. They’re still expensive too once you start adding expansion packs. They also have abnormally long handles. I like to be able to change my grip up and down the dumbbell in order to change where the tension is but holy rip, the iron master grips make the weights long AF. Hard to supinate a curl without hitting my hips. I hope these work out for me. Came out to a little over $900 with shipping and extended warranty.

Lot of factors go in to making a decision, the key one being, how do they work in a squat rack.

Cool just to see the review, I was really debating myself for something like this but I didn't want to chance a mechanical issue. Plus I really want to drop shit even when I'm not working out, I like walking over to my stuff , pick it up and drop it for a rep and be done for the day 😉

Iron master is the way to go. Wouldn’t buy these for the durability aspect and not worrying to drop if need be

I love these dumbbells. I just wish they went to a higher weight range. It may require a handle upgrade to accommodate the heavier weight but that is the case with conventional dumbbells anyway. The limiting factor would likely be the ability to accomodate the number of selections in the handle but from my perspective I would be prepared to buy two sets, ie., one from low to mid range and a second from mid to high range.

Yeah same here, I can easily do over 90lbs too and that’s also the reason why I haven’t bought powerblocks (and also because they are never in stock now). I just went with the standard dumbbells and got $70 handles, and $200 worth of plates for them from Walmart. They go up to 125lbs/ handle and those things are not going any where for a very very long time.

I think right now there's no clear cut "best" it always comes down to which trade offs you can live with.

There are a few Nuobell sets available on Finer Form right now(2-16-21), they just got a shipment in this morning and most were pre-order but a few up for grabs. They are an authorized reseller for Nuobell.

I have had the Nuobells for about 5 months...good dumbells mostly. Only two drawbacks for me. They only go up to 80lbs...which isn't really heavy enough for those compound movements for many people. I can live with that one. The BIGGEST issue is the durability. I accidentally dropped one of them....DONE. Long story short, after the drop, the weight selector was out of alignment so I couldn't select any weight that was a multiple of 10. That sucked. BUT...I contacted the company that I got them from...they sent me a replacement handle for free and only made me pay for shipping. Good as new now. DO NOT DROP THEM. Best looking dumbbells IMO...especially in black. Oh yea....damages caused by dropping them is NOT covered under warranty.

Trying to decide between the Ironmaster and Nuobell. I suppose that as long as I don't drop the Nuobell I should be fine? I like the fact that they're easy and quick to change weight settings as opposed to the Ironmaster.

Yes, don't drop them and they'll serve ya well!

There is also another adjustable dumbbell set just like these by Core Fitness, I think they might have came out first before NÜOBELL. They’re basically the same, components and everything except they only go from 5-50 lbs ($350 price point) and the handle is rubber instead of metal knurling. I have the Core Fitness ones and they’ve held up pretty well for the 7-8 months ive had them. But about a month ago my friend did drop them after a set of dumbbell press and they landed at a weird angle, causing the plates to come off of the retractable mechanism. But after messing with it for a little I was able to fix it, and it still good to this day.

Yeah I think this is the new "design" as I know a few companies utilizing something super similar to this with a few changes.

Is the handle 100% secure when out of the cradle and using them? The core home fitness handle moves slightly.

I love these DBs more than any other adjustable db I’ve used. Only downside is the lack of weight. I wish they’d use some heavy duty metal instead of plastic inserts and expand the system to 120. I’m still keen to try the iron masters. I hate the power block shape lol

I personally think powerblocks are the best. I have the urethane commercial versions that are expandable to 175 (I currently have the 125s) they work extremely well, they can be drop although I don’t do it often & they look badass. I don’t care that they’re not shape like regular dumbbells only thing I wish is that they had knurled handles and not the rubber contour grips. (Plus I’ve had them for 2 years+ now and still look and operate new)

Yeah I think the issue is the mechanism needed to do so, for most at the point where they're super heavy they get so big they stop being useful.

Really nice dbs. That being said I still prefer ironmasters but I’m still waiting to win a lottery. 80 lbs is just not heavy enough for things like db presses

look awesome but the ironmasters go heavier and are cheaper lb for lb i think. Iron master are also fully metal and there's no rattling and have longer more grippy handles apparently. Only negative is there's been none in stock in the uk for weeks and they take longer to change weight

I do prefer the ironmasters for my style of training, although if you're looking for adjustability, these are tremendously easier.

Any issues with these over the last year? Also, have you had a chance to look into Snode's offerings? AD50 and AD80? Seems like a competitor to the Nuobell by design and decreasing the amount of plastic being used.

They live at my friends garage now, he hasn't had any issues, but I have seen some with issues with the plastic holding up.

Curious as to how these have held up for you? Everyone has mentioned the plastic and some reported that part cracking. Part of me question if they were thrown around by them or if these are just isolated situations? I am not a dumbbell dropper but still a bit concerning at the price point. I'm just doing basic strength training in the garage alone so I will not be training for competitions etc.

I actually gave these to a friend as I found I wasn't using them much with my full DB set I have. He's had them for about 4 months and hasn't had any issues.

Yeah I think for a serious lifter those are super valid concerns. For someone who doesn't own a gym and just want's some "fitness" dbs, these are prob the best available.

What is the actual size of the handle? You mentioned it is small, but how small? I saw a similar set on Amazon that said it was 10 cm, which is about 4 inches.

The asterisk of *never* drop these dumbbells gives me the most pause. I've never been a weight dropper, but sometimes you just let go when its already hanging a foot from the ground after doing a bent over row or shoulder press

Nice video these are good but the problem is 80ibs was a bit light had to go with a Bowflex which gives you 90ibs/ 40kg. Power blocks are decent but the shape and changing of weight looked a bit awkward especially when you are transitioning between weight ranges fast. A shame not seen any dumbells this style with the quick change actually reach 40kgs. Btw colour was orange imo.

It depends on how you train and what you want. Go for the IM if you want the most similar to feel of dumbbells with heaviest adjustability and you don't do a ton of drop sets. Go with the Nuo if you are fine with 50 or 80lbs mas weight, not being able to drop, and you want the quickest adjustable ones.

How long have you had these? Just trying to get an idea how well they will hold up.

First world problems!

I have the Weider Core Spacesaver 100 adjustable dumbbells. They are cheap but I have had them for over 10 years. Just have to tighten some bolts every now and then. My problem is I am just too strong now for the 50 pounds max per dumbbell. 80 would probably be enough but for the price I would rather just get the Ironmaster set. I can use the old weider set for supersets and have the option to go heavier than 80lbs.

Are replacement parts available if any of the plastic pieces do break after the 2 year warranty or from damage due to dropping and how hard is it to replace if they are available? Also, please do crank out a few sets on a bench and drop them to see how they hold up. The world not only wants but NEEDS to see for a real review 🙏🏼 I’m very much sold on them aside from not being durability and time tested and proven. Would hate to spend $800 on them and have to order a whole new set because I dropped them once and replacement parts were not available

It's not a matter of if they break or wear out, it's a matter of when. Their two year warranty is a pretty big red flag.

I saw a store here in Canada selling expansion kits to turn the 20kg to 32kg and 32kg to whatever the next size was

After you" click" in a weight, remove the DB from its stand, are the handles then locked in place, so there is no danger of the handle "clicking" while doing a rep and the weights fall off ?

Yes, cradle basically has a release key that allows for adjusting.

Any recommended adjustable dumbbells that are in kgs? I'd be fine getting lbs if necessary, but it'd be nice to be consistent with kgs if possible.

I bought these off rouge about a month ago there great but I treat them like a baby , I do not know how the warranty would work , would it be smart to buy a extra pair of Handles off company and the holders , just in case you know how availability is these days

There is probably a reason why we haven't seen drop tests with any of these. I get the economy, but the guy that needs an 80# probably doesn't need a 5, 10, 15, and 20 at least, so like the dumbbell sets, you pay for extra things you don't need. For me, I just picked up a single as I needed it and it's price effective and doesn't take much room.

Depends. Personally I don’t like the mini barbell loadable type. If you don’t mind that they’re similar to rogues, so high quality but still not ideal for my own tastes.

Your dumbbells look to be in better shape than mine upon arrival. The number call outs on mine were already significantly faded; I’m going to have to fill them in with some sort of white marker in the future. There were also scratches on every single one of my plates, and the packaging they came in was fractured and mishandled. It’s all a bit unsettling when you pay $915 USD. Did you have any of these issues?

Who did you order through? Mine showed up with each DB packed in it's own box with tons of stryafoam. The handle was wrapped in it's own bag, as was the remaining weight plates, all in the cradle already so no real room for movement.

@@BasementBrandon I ordered through Rogue, although the handling of the package was through smrtft. Mine also came with styrofoam, but it was fractured all throughout as if it were crushed by the items. Rogue contacted them on my behalf, and apparently such workmanship and handling issues are considered normal for a new set. I then contacted smrtft directly, and they initially told me the product wasn’t theirs. I’ve been rerouted to Rogue CS for clarification, of which I have still gotten none of haha

Buy a large enough horse stall mat 1/2 inch thick should be more than enough for most uses.

@@BasementBrandon I've heard the horse stall mats shouldn't go directly against the wood floor bc it can trap moisture or cause discoloration but I don't kno what to use... I would only drop deadlift but I will use drop pads for that... I'm color blind too sux lol

I own the Bowflex dumbell (both sizes). If I was to rebuy them again I would get the power block elite. The reason would be for best quality for a quick adjustable dumbell. I'm not satisfied with the Bowflex quality because I had a plastic piece break in the base. The one time I didn't place it down strait and a small plastic piece the goes from the base to the dumbell broke. That small piece has to go inside the dumbell for it to adjust.

How does it do 5lb increments? Each plate looks like 5lbs each, so is the load lopsided half the time?

Core Fitness doesn't go up this high and is made of a lot more plastic.

Brandon, I love you man, really do. But who do you know never drops their dbs? C’mon man!!! I think dropping these from bench height, which happens all the time, would be very concerning. No way would I feel comfortable using these. But, as always, great review!

I've found since transitioning to a home gym I treat all my equipment better lol. It's a pain to not even drop them from bench height, but doable IMO, especially bc they max out at 50 or 80lbs.

Hello to all, I noticed that there are some websites showing different dimensions of the Nuo dumbells. Can anyone please provide me with clarification on the exact dimensions of Nuo 80-pound dumbbells without the cradle? Thank you

Ah just gave these to a friend.

My only gripe with the nuobell is that they only adjust at 5lb increments. Compared to the powerblocks which can do 2.5lb. powerblocks are far from perfect though, too.

TBH I've never found a time where I wanted to go up 2.5lbs.

Do you still have them ? I think that they can't be dropped is a huge disadvantage. Even more than people might think initially. That pretty much removes the possibility of failing a rep on a lot of movements . And it even removes high RPEs in some cases, as you might , say, get the last OHP up but then you're too fatigued to bring them down gently and you need to dump them
