Mystery Amiga 2000's (Pt1) - Exploration

Ғылым және технология

To create my 'World of Amiga' display in the Museum of Computing, I start by restoring 2 Amiga 2000's I found in the archives. Join me in part 1 as I explore the machines I found to see what expansion cards they contain.

    I love the Amiga. I have my Amiga 1200 in a tower hooked up in my living room siting next to my modern desktop PC running workbench 3.1. I love the look of the Amiga 2000's, very beautiful looking Amiga's.

    I own one of these marvelous machines since the early nineties. It was the second computer I've bought after owning an Amiga 500 for two years. This machine has stunning expandability. Two years ago I added a network interface card and two USB-ports for instance (combo card from Individual Computers). Thumb-drives, USB-HDDs and even optical drives are working just fine!

    Good news: This is a currently produced product. Bad news: You have to have at least 8 megs of RAM and (ideally) an accelerator card to be able to use it. Also, the USB-part is a clockport-module originally designed to be used in an Amiga 1200. In order to use it in an Amiga 2000 or derivative, you have to buy the X-Surf-100 ethernet card. Both available from Individual Computers: X-Surf-100: icomp.de/shop-icomp/en/shop/product/x-surf-100.html RapidRoad (USB-expansion): icomp.de/shop-icomp/en/shop/product/rapidroad-usb.html The RapidRoad gets piggybacked onto the X-Surf.

    There is also a Video Toaster branded Amiga 2000. Case is identical except for the Video Toaster brand where the Amiga 2000 brand is located on the left hand side if you are looking at the computer.

    I really need to move to Swindon. I want to help out with the museum, I'd love to help do what the likes of yourself, RMC Neil and all the other volunteers do to keep these machines running. Having seen the stores downstairs on a visit to the Swindon Hackspace before they had their own venue I was astonished by just how much there is that will never get a chance in the spotlight of the relatively small floorspace upstairs. It saddened me to realise that. There's only so much time available to spend on so many machines. However the town is a good ~1.5hour drive so it's not "near" 😭

  • @TheDigitalOrphanage

    @TheDigitalOrphanage

    Yes, volunteers are the lifeblood of museum's like MoC. The hope is to prepare more machines for display and rotate the displays more. It does take time though, and I wish I could do this full time. You can help the museum by spreading the word. Is there a nearer museum to you that you could volunteer at?

    I have a boxed example of at least 1 of every Amiga and CD32/CDTV including bundles. Some are new old stock lol maybe I should open a museum too. Ditto for C= 8bits except an SX64, you try getting a boxed one of those. The A2000 and 500 are no better than A1000, typical Commodore blunder, ditto A3000 chipset did nothing extra that was useful (1280x256 in BBC Micro/VIC20 style colour palette)

    Thanks for watching, you're a little out with your dates though. The first Amiga, the 1000 was 1985 and the A3000 was released in 1990. The CDTV was 1991, A4000 and A1200 1992, and the CD32 was 1993. I was using different Amigas from 1989 until 1995 but it seems like so much longer than that.

Now , Will Weaton as documented ..wont tell you where as things tend to dis appear .and/or change,, or lies he promoted .. hence what is happening now.... back to the topic.. he researched ie tested the A4000 Toaster in 1990 ..hence A4000 was out as he said it was ,and I knew it was. Added RAM on HD card? Why would they do that, maybe acting as a disk caching memory?

  • @TheDigitalOrphanage

    @TheDigitalOrphanage

    4 жыл бұрын

    That's a good question. It's standard Zorro II RAM but as it's accessible via DMA, the HD controller should be able to transfer data to that RAM without needing to use the CPU or go through the Agnus chip, so much faster. Putting it all on one card made it a one stop solution for more RAM and a HD, much like the A590 for the A500.
