My Trees are Dying...
Ойын-сауық
My trees are started to die. So here is an update on my current method of rain water collection. Given the really dry summers we have been having lately, I am going to have to step up my water collection methods.

MULCH MULCH MULCH. The reason those trees in the middle of the forest are doing well, is the mulch traps water. Get 2-4 inches of mulch on those Thorn trees and they will do much better. Mulch prevents evaporation from the soil.

Mix in charcoal clusters with the mulch, it's one of the best materials for the soil to hold water and when sized correctly it leaves openings for aeration.

Mulch needs to be held back away from the base of the saplings to prevent mold. The 'cone' made by the mulch holds water around the young root ball.

Absolutely. And if you can't get enough grass and wood chips, add in some cardboard boxes. The pieces can be a bit large. Worms love them.
Very shocking that you dont have enough water in the UK. Very unusual. Here in Austria we had too much rain in spring. Most of my strawberries became foul because of massive rainfalls...

Yeah the water situation here is tentative. We have a very high population in a very small land mass. Water collection is at the top of my list lately!
Very humble man , it was a pleasure to have met you at the bushcraft show
You and your Dad together is brilliant mate. Pair of legends. Love your videos anyway…. Watched for yonks. Normal fella, down to earth and honest as the day is long. Don’t change… 🤜🤛💙
I would recommend grass clippings as mulch around the tree to hold moisture and prevent water run off.
So sorry that you've had too much dry weather, hoping you get some rain. As others have mentioned, mulch for those young trees and maybe some old soda bottles filled with water, a hole drilled thru the lid and the neck buried next to each tree as a self waterer. ❤👍
I love watching videos with you two together. Their fabulous.
hope you can saveall those dying trees
you might look into digging a small well
Woodchips are your best friend. Blessings from northern california.
Try cutting the bottom off 4lt plastic milk bottles and take the top off and bury the bottles next to each tree and fill up with water, or lenghts of old drain pipes. Anything like that will work. Keeps the water where needed.

This a good tip for 'time release' watering.
Mulch donuts worked well for my baby trees
Have you done a soil sample of that area? You may be able to add a liquid organic fertilizer to the water to hasten root establishment.

You need mulch mate, you will probably find a thick layer of it in the middle of the wood but there will be very little at the edge where the trees are dying. Give them a good thick bed of it, it prevents evaporation from the soil. It might be worth digging a well too for more water.
Definitely add some more waterbarrels for collection. Waybe get a pump water sprayer for those trees.
Hope the trees are doing well now Mike.
Watering the first year especially is key.
Perhaps take some of those posts and extend the cabin roof to double down on your rain water collection, providing a covered area for coppiced wood to dry at the same time. My dad used sections of thick bamboo ( foot long, 3inch wide'ish) when planting trees .down into the soil, for getting water down to the roots for the first few years . Eventually they rot away but by then the trees are established. Love both your channels, looking forward to seeing more 👊
Hi Mike I collected loads of acorns last year to help restore my local woods with the next generation of oaks. I had a few from the previous mass year grown in pots about 2-3 years old I planted them out last autumn along with several hundred acorns. And to my surprise literally yesterday all of my pot grown ones are wilting and dying, but only know with the recent bit of rain we had my acorns are popping up everywhere proper chuffed they’re only 4-6 inches tall compared to my cell/pot grown ones 1-2 ft tall already 1st year But the ones that are just popping I’m praying just a little bit more rain will survive this summer
Life with Mike would consider trying out the Atmospheric Water Harvesting generator for your forest & garden system & drinking water?
I can see your giving thoses saplings/tree's the best of what you have to offer, reading the comments and the recommendations is great resource from those more experienced than myself and not to feel disharted if all fails you have given your best from the resources and knowledge you have gained. I wish you good luck.
I loved nurturing our various species of trees in my mixed woodland. We needed to water with a hose wherever one could reach at various stages of early growth and lack of ground water.
If you want the deer to leave the trees along you can blend some hot peppers and then strain the liquid out and spray those on the trees. It won’t harm the trees or the deer and make the plants less palatable to herbivores. You do have to reapply after every rain though
Lovely update, lovely seeing you together, Luv from UK 🇬🇧
Also, this channel has a lot of useful information. always learning well😊👍
Have found that the deer don’t seem to like our ash trees. Browsed this red oak, crab apples, poplars, birches etc but left the ash, which I have been feeding heavily to fortify them against ash dieback.
You've got a lot of good suggestions below. I will recommend a DIY watering solution. Take a length of old water hose, drill holes in it down the length. How long depends on how long the row of trees you've got there. Bury most of it along the tree line, about two feet down, and leave enough out of the ground to attach to a funnel. That allows two things. One, you can then pour water into the funnel and it'll go down the hose spreading water to all the root systems. Two, the funnel itself will catch water when it rains as well. Often enough, when the ground is dry from drought conditions, rain water just puddles up, or simply runs off, or is quickly absorbed by the ground, but doesn't go far down. With the funnel/hose system, whatever water the funnel catches will get distributed to the roots of the trees.

We had a lot of clay in our topsoil and compaction was an issue. Your 'drip irrigation' suggestion is great but a funnel catches very little rainfall, especially in a dry time. Pair it with a watering can or hose and 'Bob's your uncle!' I tilled the topsoil around my trees to permit water penetration.

@@jamesellsworth9673 I don't know if they're available in the UK, but here in the States they make a "gardening funnel" (may not be its name now) which is about 8 inches in diameter. It's not really designed to catch a lot of rainfall, more to be easily used to water with.
you’ll definitely get deer damage above the guards if they’re enjoying the greens and are still around. you can raise the guards (either by sticking a ‘y’ shaped stick underneath or tying the bottom of the guard to your stake [some guard have holes down there for such purposes])…that works unless the rabbit pressure is as bad as deer. i highly recommend raising the guards on the trees that have grown out.
Mike go by a second hand store or someplace and get an old ladle or an old soup can to scoop the water out of the bucket. Smaller use of water and 1 scoop per tree.
We are having a wet spring now but last year especially dry. The native Sycamores are mostly defoliated from anthracnose presently. Its a tree similar to London Planetree. We'll see if they rebound nest year but it doesn't look good.
Planks would make a good epoxy/elm table
Mate New Zealand has gotten all your rain , were so over it , but we've had exactly that type of drought in the past also. Swings and roundabouts

We in England have well enough rain as everybody knows
Your dad looks like a mad man with that rock 😂
I've often seen Tree Gators in city parks in London, maybe you could make something like that on a small scale.
You'll need considerable more water storage to make any difference at all.
Enjoyed watching dude hope the trees doing well in the end
a good way to slow water is to use a bottle with a hole in the cap, fill the bottle and stick the cap in the ground next to the plant
How high off of the water table are you? Perhaps you can dig a well?
Would clearing the brush and not letting wood decompose cause water to evaporate faster from the soil?
Not sure what laws pr regulations are in your area, but try out fetalizers. I know Monsanto products are banned in most if not all of Europe, which I agree with. But composting is an option. Maybe finding ways to get more water to them some how. Edit: building rings around each tree can trap water.
Its weird u post this i was going to ask u how they was doing ...mine been the same in Devon 😢 I'm hoping mine are making roots down there ?
can you get water from somewhere else? so that if you run out of rain water you could still get water
Have you had much caterpillar damage on trees in tubes? We’ve had them on our rowen and dog wood.
I was just wondering what blades can we carry in the uk without getting into serious trouble, don’t get me wrong love a bushcraft knife but it’s illegal no? Some help is advised cheers people:)
Try Electro culture
Chemtrails.
You could mix orbez soaked with water and or fertilizer and then mix into the soil. It greatly helps retain water and nutrients releasing gradually.
Plant new trees with a little cat litter underneath, this absorbs water and keeps the root system hydrated for a bit of time.
As a forester I can say this method is like stoping bleeding from a gunshot wound with a bandaid. The normal succession of a hard wood Forrest is as trees die they allow fore nutrients and water to support the new growth and suppressed trees. It’s all a cycle.
