I bought my Trangia 27 in 1985. Still the only camping cooker I own.

The Goshawk burned for 5 minutes after the boiling point, making it the most efficient use of fuel, which is usually the number one weight consideration for alcohol stoves. It should be able to boil using only 0.6 ounces in your test conditions!

I've found that regardless of burn time most alcohol stove still use about the same amount of fuel (30ml) to boil about the same amount of water (500ml). I.E. a rough 1:16 ratio of fuel to water. I think the most important decision when choosing an alcohol stove is to match the pattern of the flames to the pot. By that i mean not pairing a stove like an Evernew with a small pot since it has a very wide flame pattern which can waste allot of the heat or a Toaks with a very large pot as it tends to concentrate the flames in one very small area and can burn your food.

Ernie I love the lineup. They are all wonderful in their own way but I must say the old fancy feast continues to be the cheapest and the most easy to use

I don’t think you can beat the cat food can stove. All around, cost, efficiency, no stand needed… it covers all the bases

They don’t work well in the cold. When the temperature drops much below freezing, they don’t stay alight.

Yeah, my DIY TomCat stove burns like a champ at 10°F. Our commercial ones not so well. Cost me $1.40 to make. 🤪 It's the only thing we carry on multi day backpacks in the desert or high country!

I always enjoy your alcohol stove videos! I've been hooked on using them for years now. The Trangia, Esbit clone, & the Evernew stove are all my favorites. My first alcohol was a Trangia Military Surplus burner & I made a fold up stove stand out of a copper ground wire & section of copper tubing. I discovered the built in primer ring on the Trangia stoves at the base of the external threads & that is my favorite feature of that stove. A few drops of alcohol to wet the primer ring & it always fires the bloom in no time. I also use the Evernew titanium, tall, cross stand to boil 2 cups of water in the regular Trangia burner for my morning coffee every day. The tall cross stand is the best I've found to economically burn alcohol with the Trangia & the Trangia clones. I've even gone off the deep end with various diy alcohol stoves. Thanks for your videos, they are greatly appreciated!

One of my two favorites is the Fancy Feast. I've made a number of them. Some I've put into "Emergency Kits" for friends & family. The other favorite is the Trangia. It's the first burner that I bought, years ago. DIY wire mesh pot stand & windscreen. Both of them are in our Grab/Go & Get Home kits. Many years ago, when we first started camping I wanted to have a way to make coffee while the bacon was cooking. Same principle today. Thanks for sharing.

Good comparison, and I concur on your ‘bombproof’ comment on the Trangia burner and can add a lot more years of use. I bought a Mini Trangia set in 1989 (no non-stick lid/fry pan then) for days out rock climbing and long distance trail backpacking. The pots have a few dents from being accidentally knocked/dropped and rolling down scree slopes, but they still work as does the burner (burner holes need to be cleaned with a needle and brass wire brush to remove deposits to keep a short prime and good flame jets). After adding fuel to the centre, put a few drops around the channel between the screw thread and the outer skin. Light that, rather than the centre, and it heats the top jets, transfers to the centre and primes faster. My other tip is for cold weather (something you can only do with burners that have a screw top to contain fuel). Take the burner out of your cook/brew kit and keep it in am inside pocket of your jacket to keep it warm. Problem solved in freezing conditions 👍 I use the Trangia burner with several types of set up DIY + purchased pot stands/stoves, and I also make my own from pop/soda cans.

Nice video. It'd be interesting to redo this benchmark test with a small fan providing some cross-winds to see how they perform then.

If you turn the trangia triangle upside down and put some skewers through the holes, you can use a smaller dimension pot, fwiw.

My favorite is still the original Trangia system with the kettle. I have the big 25-6 with alcohol burner. I never have found a better system. Especially when there is wind. Sure it is big and compared to other's it is heavy. But bring it in relations to my needs it's the perfekt system for me. I never walk alone. Often with my son and friends and we all use my system. So we cook for all in one system. This relativat the size and the weight, because one person carries the cooking system for the whole group. It is solid and has a extrem stable stand. I also never found a better wind shield. So for me there are no alternatives.

I have the 25 and the mini(28) the mini is so small but so practical for certain trips and the other is all around great. Love them.

Nice video, I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I went with the orginal tranggia and a small no named colapasble wood stove with a hinge. It goes together fast and packs flat. I did need to spend 5 minutes with a metal file to get my trangia to fit in the circular Ring in the woods wood stove to fit my trangia.

That is quite nice comparison. One thing would be just right, to see the burn pattern of each stove/burner. Also, more look inside to see some construction

Interesting comparison. Hope you're ready for IDA today. Have a Trangia or two myself, as well as some others. The last pot stand was very similar to one made by Esbit. The Esbit model doesn't use the inner ring, but the Trangia itself fits into the little slots on the sides. I don't believe the Esbit pot stand is made anymore, but I did see one on Amazon a couple of days ago for less than half what you said the other one cost.

Hi Ernie. Enjoy the videos and really like your series. Maybe time for top five coffee setups? This got me thinking about my top 5 alcohol setups. There is some overlap and I’ve been curious about the Evernew for awhile… Fancee Feest (Zelph) Gram Weenie Pro (BatchStovez) Kojin burner (Trail Designs) with their Caldera Cone system TiLight burner (Flat Cat Gear) with their Bobcat or Snow Leopard system Trangia (I guess, but I never settled on a stand and windscreen that I liked). It should be bombproof like the stove and I think flexible with pot sizes. You didn’t mention the Firebox Nano - is that still part of your ultimate? Not sure I need it for my rotation, but Iike you I am a collector.

Great video looking at AMAZON came across a very interesting stove the ATiAP alcohol stove it has a Firecover and a Bracket. The Firecover and Bracket looks like it would work as a solid fuel stove.

I've got a few of those stoves. Fanceefeast, toaks, evernew, Trangia, and some old stainless steel one from sportsman's guide from years ago. That gameshow music is going to be stuck in my head all night. Lol.

the Fancy Feast is the ultimate lightweight backpacker stove out of these 5. And it's even the least expensive. I have to say that I'm a fan of the Trangia style, though. The one I have is a knock-off made by Redcamp and it's pretty good. The stand that came with it is ok but it works with all the standard stuff that's made for an actual Trangia stove. I like that Toaks setup but that's a pretty hefty price for the system. Can the Toaks pot sand also be used as a twig stove? Also what is your preferred fuel for these things? I've seen a lot of guys use Heet fuel system treatment.

I noted you did. It add the spyhiver stone like the dance fest but light and no carbon felt I prefer it.

My favorite is the Toaks Siphon because it is light weight, bomb proof, efficient with small diameter pots, easy to reclaim alcohol, and primes quickly. I have many of the others too, but the Toaks I prefer. Thanks for the video Doc.

Which pot stand do you use for your toaks? The stand Ernie uses in the video is nice, but seems not to work well with bigger pots.

Hello Shosanna, The pot stand I use is similar to the one Dr. Ernie uses. It is also made by Toaks, "Titanium Pot Stand For Alcohol Stove" and can be purchased on Amazon. It does not use the the titanium skewers as the TiStand does, but rather has vent holes at the top and bottom. This way a larger diameter pot can sit upon it. It is in four (4) panels just like Dr. Ernie's that go together the same way, but if you have a smaller pot you can use three (3) panels instead of the four (4). I like it much; it is simple and light weight. I hope this helps.

The distance from the pot to the burner seems a bit much (about 1.5″ instead of the 1″ sweet spot). Also i don't like that the vent holes are so big and on all 4 panels. This way, the stand does not double as a windshield. And for it being just a stand and not a stand/windshield combined, it is a bit to "heavy" for the super light Siphon.

@@DanceCommander The "tornado" pattern of Toaks flames seems require more distance from the pot than classic 1" sweet spot, similarly to "laminar flow" (chimney) stoves. BTW - In H.Cook testes, the Toaks boil faster with "TBBP (Top of Burner to Bottom of Pot) distance: 1.50" (40 mm). He test too with 1" and 1/2" and Evernew cross stand, in those the boil times boil are longer.

There are versions of the fancy feast stove dating back to before the great depression and yet it continues to beat the newest stoves out there. So trying make a stove that is better is near impossible.

I've see the "plumbers stove" of 1930's, that use wick (cotton balls) material inside a paint can and a metal sheet around the can, fixed with radiator hose colar, but nothing similar to the "Fancy Feast" wick scheme. The "plumbers stove" could be compared with an Starlyte/Kojin scaled up.

Hi Ernie! Have you modified any of the Trangia clones jet holes? Making them bigger or all the same size?

Concerning the DX stand. I thought the turbo plate was for cold whether. In the hot its a heatsink. Can you confirm?

The Toaks stove is all light weight and everything but the type of pot stand you need a substantial stand. Some pot stands reduce the efficiency of burners because they absorb a lot of the heat energy.

I'd like to see a comparison between the og trangia and an alloy, a titanium and a stainless steel one.

Can you use the dx stand with the toaks siphon stove?

Hello Ernie. Love all the vids. To me, efficiency is the most important factor, as it translates in ounces of fuel per day on the trail. I'd love to see the best total setup (burner + stand + put and lastly windscreen where applicable) to yield the highest fuel consumption efficiency. Why isn't the Kojin w/ cone in the top 5? Just curious. Trangia head here but am starting to be curious about that combo!

Have you tried Speedster Stoves? They are not the fastest, but they are very small.

I'm surprised you're not using the clickstand for the Trangia, it's far better than the Trangia stand.

Love your videos, but I just wonder why the Trail Designs Caldera Cone system did not make the cut. I have one with the Kojin stove. It is competitively lightweight, fast heating, fuel efficient, wind resistant, and I don’t have to worry about knocking it over like my cat can stove. Plus, you can store fuel in it and easily extinguish the flame when finished cooking, saving fuel. Again - unlike my cat can stove! Oh yes, the two piece “caddy” serves as my bowl and cup.

Every time I don't take my caldera cone I miss that caddy so so much -- perfect size to hold a "stuffed" quart freezer bag meal with the top rolled down. I made reflectix cozies for both sections, and usually have to wait for my food to cool down enough even after rehydrating. Fyi -- if you have one with a "short half" it fits perfectly inside a Toaks 550ml mug/pot and gives you a super small/light 2-pc kit.

Lol when me and my father go camping he has 20 ways to cook alcohol burners jet boil cookers. Firebox wood cookers. Coleman gas cookers

Nice video, Thank you. Question(s)...I noticed your Trangia is not soldered under the shoulder, Does it ever leak fuel? Do you you think it would be worth it to get a Trangia that is soldered? Could happens leak in the crimped parts, but seems very rare. Anyway Firebox sell a version with solder there, for use in their Firebox Nano. Probable because inside the Nano the Trangia burner work more hot. For use the Trangia as base for solid fuel tablets, could at least try upside down.

@@Sokol10, I have a soldered Trangia, no problems with it. Had an unsoldered solo stove, It leaked and flames were coming out around the shoulder. As far as running hotter in the nano, that would be minimal if at all since heat rises, the heat from the flame would pull in cool combustion air from under the Nano cooling the the burner. The melting point of 95/5 lead free solder which is typically used on water lines in the HVAC/plumbing industry is 450-465 degrees F.

Hi there, I have been enjoying your reviews for a while now. Did you ever consider experimenting with the very simple "super cat" stove design? I mean the one which is essentially only the empty small (ca 3 oz I think?) cat food can with typically two rows of punched holes (ca 6 mm or ca 1/4 inch diameter) near its top and nothing more. It does not require a stand and weighs hardly anything, and it's fairly easy for a person with limited hand skills to make. Because it's so simple and lightweight and cheap, and seems to perform well in my experience (in addition - it's completely hollow, so it can be stowed around a small cup or exist inside an ultra-light kit with something else stored inside it), I think it's something that you perhaps ought to highlight in a video some day, maybe in a comparison video. First, *ALL* alcohol stoves have advantages and disadvantages over others. The simple "super cat" design is a good stove and easy to make. *ADVANTAGES:* 1) No pot stand needed. 2) Easy to make/replace. In emergency, only need a knife. 3) Fast boil times. *DISADVANTAGES:* 1) Prime time after lighting, can't immediately put pot on and start cooking. 2) Not fuel efficient. Though fast boiling, uses fuel quickly. Other stoves nay be able to heat the same amount with less fuel. 3) [Or 1a if you prefer] Subject to "cold pot syndrome," where the flame goes out when a cold pot is placed on top.

Annoys me people not adding the time lost while waiting for Trangia to bloom, its still waiting time for boil ! As for them being good in cold conditions, they work but the boil is vastly slower..I nearly froze yrs back waiting for mine to boil, when l got home l threw most of my Trangia stuff in the trash.

Cleaning a Trangia Burner? CLEANING A TRANGIA BURNER?!?! Do not upset the Great God of the Trangia by even suggesting such a thing!

LOL, I bought one of the big Swedish military Trangias off eBay, it came all dented and corroded, with some of the holes plugged with green stuff. It got the royal treatment, shined up reel purty and now burns evenly around all the holes.

TOAKS... TOAKS...TOAKS... Defenetly TOAKS it's tha real McCoy...

Toaks....are you really serious??????$35 for a metal cup.....nothing else.....an this is one of your new favorites???????? Boil time sucks!!!!!!
