Really nice channel you have here:) I also use the Sb29 on my newest project. It does a really great job in the low highs and it can cross over nicely low. Unfortunately it’s pretty directional but that could be due to the big size for a tweeter. Anyways, keep up the great work, cheers!

Another enjoyable video Ryan. Thank you. Would be great if you could compare the the alternative clones of the DE250. This would be very helpful for people living outside the US who can't access the original or the even better DIYSG 360 option at affordable prices or at all. For those of us that would like to try some of the DE250 based Econowave builds or those using the SEOS and 360 combo on Hifi Circuit this would be invaluable information. Options that come to mind include the PRV 290Py, Celestion CDX1-1747, MD Acoustics DE250P and Dayton Audio D250P (perhaps others?)

I would love to see you test this Ceramic Dome tweeter Visaton KE 25 SC - 8 Ohm! Thanks for all you work love the passion you have for it!

Best video quality I've seen on your channel. Great lighting too.

I personally love the Phillips 1" and 2" soft dome tweeters for nice crisp highs without that hard twang that you would get from those metal cone tweeters. My other fav I'd the JBL bullets for the really high frequencies at low to mid sound. The jBL 2245j is really good too.

Stumbled onto this video and was surprised to see that favorite was compression driver. I'm running Seos12 horns with Radian 475PB compression drivers, which I am able to cross at 1kHz at 18dB slope with dual 8" woofers with analogue active crossover. 107dB sensitive horn/compression driver driven directly from quality amplifier without any passive crossover parts or L-pad sounds extremely pure.

@Stephen Sandre My custom dual-woofer bass module is very similar to the older Wilson Watt/Puppies (the Puppy bass modules). In fact, they originally had the same Dynaudio woofers Wilson used, now replaced by Seas woofers.

I got RCF N350, B&C DE250 & DE45. All three sound loud & crysp, but when the DE45 gets loaded with around 30-40 watt, it plays crysp and amazing, cause is 3 kg magnet, with pure titanium diaphragm, espetially on vocals. They do need high power woofer like the RCF lf15p530 or B&C 15PS100 to match the perfect full range sound

I had a hunch that Be JBL / IWATA was going to be your fave even though it's crazy expensive and large. Also gotta love those big red Mick Jagger lips lol.

Audio Aficionado - I’ve used domes, ribbons, and pleated diaphragms that were in the same price range. Given what you will spend on the rest of your audio system it’s the most impactful $$$ you will invest.

The JBL LSR series studio monitors use a soft dome tweeter tucked into a waveguide. Not quite a horn but might as well be. It's nearly 4 inches by 6 inches wide. The LSR series are renowned for perfect sound stage and no matter where you go in the room you can hear both speakers clearly.

Ribbons are my favorite tweaters. They sound amazing

Chris DeBlanc hmm not sure what to say in a video like that. Mostly use Lpad resistors or gain structure if using active to lower the tweeter level where you need it. The process is the same as regular tweeters.

Awesome video. Such a helpful channel. Any chance you could suggest some wavegiudes that suit the SB29? I'm sure the info is out there but its eluded me so far. The Dayton waveguide I've heard works doesn't seem to be made anymore. Any other dome tweet and waveguide combos you have found to work well? Thanks!

Myles O-K ring radiator tweeters work really well. Like the Vifa xt25. I’ve had a lot of success with that. I haven’t used any waveguides recently though, so not sure what to recommend. Most of them need to be modified and hacked up so I’d try some cheap ones first.

When it comes to dome tweeters I really like the Seas 27TDFC, despite not playing as low as the Dayton RS28A that I used before the Seas. But it's been 10 years since I moved to compression drivers, initially with the B&C DE10 for about 2 years and then finally the JBL 2408H with the JBL 6x6 PT waveguide and ever since I never had the urge to change it, it does such a good job. Eventually I plan on building another set of speakers (this time passive) using the Seas tweeter with the SEOS 8 waveguide to use it in the garage or when doing work outside.

I am choosing between the SB acoustics Satori TW29RN-B-8 and the Visaton KE 25 SC. To pair with a SB acoustics Satori 6,5" woofer. Does anyone have any experience with one of these two?

HI-VI 1.3we awsome detail ,feels organic sound and cheap!

Scanspeak ss9500 and Hiquphon are favorites after 15 years. Followed by Xt25 and rs28 .

It's a shame the RS tweeters are now down. The RST's aren't exactly drop in.

That Visa 25mm ring tweeter is a good one. Many years ago I built a two wat with the Skaanings 5” and and a Dyaudio Esotec tweeter. One of the tweeters got wrecked by a hockey stick( don’t ask) and I decided to use the Vifa ring radiator as a drop in. It was cheap and had similar specs. I actually preferred the sound to the Esotec.

When i was in uni, people got very excited about Beryllium anything due to the toxicity of it's salts. they wouldn't let me make off with an x-ray detector that was being scrapped because of it. And now here it is in some consumer(ish) electronics! anything for good HiFi haha

I'm looking for a small neo tweeter like the SB29RDCN-C000-4. I'm probally going to go with the SB acoustics but have you tried/tested the Peerless NE19VTS-04? or NE25VTS-04? or any other neo dome tweeters other than the xt25-sc90-04? good job explaining real speaker design.

Aaron Wolfram yes I've used a few small neos. Most of them have compromise to get the chamber so small. The sb29 doesn't give up much at all. It's by far the best IMO. But the NEs are pretty good. Haven't done a whole lot with them though. They're priced really well though.

The new Chane L series are using the SB acoustic ring tweeters. They are also using SB acoustics woofers in the L series line.

Are you using a L-pad with that horn in some cases to bring it down to match most woofers? Pairing it with an average woofer that's say 89db 1w/1m isn't the 108db horn way over powering?

IowAudio Review yes it always needs an Lpad. Even with really efficient woofers like pro woofer it requires an Lpad.

The new Peerless DA series tweeters have really impressive measurements and they're fairly cheap. Haven't heard them yet but plan to soon.

Can you remember which was that 8" woofer that you used with the horn? What about coupling with the small SB and no horn? What 7" or 8" would you choose to mate with the small SB29? Thanks!

Hiquphon OW1 easily. The RS28F is very smooth, but maybe not for older ears. SB29 and XT25,wonderful. I’ve yet to use a SCAN or Seas tweeter that I like.

I may be asking too much, but would be great for DIY if you could offer some winning combinations: woofer, tweeter, crossover details. I'm in Europe, and DIYS has some nice products but shipping + tax increases price by 50%. Love your videos, keep on going please.

Just subscribed and liked. Ryan, not being educated on electrical and sound frequency/db (etc.) matters, I don't understand much of what you're talking about. Nevertheless, I enjoy watching your videos, and I can recognized that you know what you're talking about. I have a pair of speakers that I bought about 35 years ago from a place in Vancouver called Speaker City (they have since gone out of business but were around for a long time.) I don't remember much information about the speakers, though they do have a sticker on the front face of the cabinet that says SRC Audio, and, if I remember, correctly, the original (photocopied) info sheet that came with them said "Sherman (or Shermann) Research Company (or Corporation(?) ) Also, I remember that the info sheet said they had beryllium ribbon tweeters and a frequency range of 20Hz - 20,000Hz. I've researched SRC Audio (and variations thereof) and the only thing I can come up with is a company in Germany that goes by a similar name but I have my doubts as to whether they are related to my speakers. There is a company in New Jersey by the name SRC Audio but they've only been around since 2003, so, they're not related, either. The speakers are floor standing speakers, 40" H x 13" W x 11" D. Each cabinet contains two beryllium ribbon tweeters approx. 2 1/2" each, two mid range speakers approx. 4" each, and one woofer approx. 10". (I'm giving "approx." measurements because I'm not sure where, on the speakers, to take the measurements from.) Each speaker has two 2" ports at a 45 degree angle below the woofer. I have no idea what brand of components are in the cabinets. I believe this might have been a (SRC Audio) kit that Speaker City ordered and put together on their premises, though I can't confirm that (I have been told, recently, that the "S" in SRC might stand for "Sandy", the owner of Speaker City. If true, then it's likely they're a pair of speakers of their own design.) Anyways, if you or any of your subscribers/viewers have any info on these speakers, I'd much appreciate knowing more. Also, Ryan, I don't know where you are in Canada, but if you were close enough to my location, I'd love to have you test my speakers (yes, I'd be willing to pay) so that I could get some real info on their performance.

Overall, I'm happy with the speakers. Unfortunately, due to the configuration of my living room, I can't place the speakers within the room in a way that would best suit the capabilities of the speakers and/or sound reproduction (they're sitting about an inch from the wall.) Generally, when I'm listening to music, I'm not sitting in one spot, trying to be at the point of a triangle, or in the "sweet spot", anyways. When I was first listening to them in the listening room at Speaker City, I was listening to them at a volume that I can't often play in a condo unit (my bad.) At home, I find that, at lower volumes, I need to crack up the bass to balance the sound. I suppose that would seem, somewhat, reasonable being that there's two tweeters and two mid range speakers for each woofer. It might also be that the woofer isn't as sensitive as the other speakers and, therefor, needs greater input before it starts kicking. Who knows? Anyways, I'd love to have them dissected, someday; learn how well they're reproducing sound/frequency ranges, what brand of components are in the cabinets, and what, if anything, could be done to make them even better. If you're interested in providing that kind of service, let me know. I'd gladly make a day trip of it.

hansik3777 there are actually advantages to using the 12 or 15. I just really like the response and size of the 10 if I'm picking a favourite considering all aspects. If size is not an issue the 12 and 15 are technical better performing.

tony cook I’m not totally up on what is available in the UK, but I believe Monacor had a few waveguides available. Pretty much any of them need the flange cut off and the throat planed down to match the flange on the tweeter. A few people on diyaudio.com have done it with the XT25.

So I have both of life of tweeters, the TG30 and the BG60 I actually prefer the BG60. I think the sensitivity is higher and it sounds just better in general for some reason just my opinion. The SB29 is a great Twitter also and i have a pair ( getting more) of the full size ones with the metal faceplate. I'm going to compare them directly against the VIFA eventually. The problem with the Wi-Fi now is they've been sold out so many different times that I think they're made in China now. Luckily both pairs I have are the original made in Denmark. I haven't tried your whole loaded driver recommendation and I don't really care for compression drivers as much as ringdoms or other type of dome feeders simply because the high end is often lacking. But since a sensitivity would be so high that can be shaped. Because you like them so much, I may find an opportunity to try them out just to see because I respect your opinion, and because our taste and tweeters aligns almost identically. Thanks for the review. Another tutor I really like is the Dayton RS 28F-4 Not to be confused with a new crappy Chinese version the RST 28. Really great tweeters It's a soft dome, but it's not a ring dam so it has more dispersion if you don't feel like sitting in the same cheer to listen like the SB 29 lol. Honestly the dispersion of the ringtones isn't as bad as they may look on paper or are people might say. Anyway, I believe the Dayton RS. 28F was made by usher audio I have some usher 7-in mid base drivers that I'm going to do some things with also coming up.

I agree entirely. The RS28 was solid and the BG60 is definitely better than the TG30. For the size though, the TG is really good. I used them in a really small pair of speakers and they worked well. Thanks for checking out the vids.

Cost aside , I’d like to use beryllium tweeters if I ever build my dream speakers. Regarding Vifa , I used them decades ago in a car audio install, and it ended up sounding fantastic .

I'm working with a Utah WD90 box so it has to be like 3.5 to 4 inches, I think 4 inches where the 4 mounting holes are. Also it mounts from the back inside so the front of the tweet needs to have a flat surface area can't be tapered off, and if it sticks out too much it's going to make contact with the woven cloth cover.

Do you have any experience with the Seas 27TBFCG? I read about it from Zaph audio's tweeter mismash years ago and decided to give it a try. It's my favorite sounding tweeter that I've used or heard. My hearing rolls off around 15khz so I'm usually not concerned about anything above that lol. The only thing I don't like about it is the cutout as you have to cut out a spot for the terminals.

I find it similar to the XT25 with a smoother top end and seems to have a more natural sound. Even though it's a metal dome tweeter, it's not very bright at all. I've never been disappointed in it. Handles high volumes and power quite well too!

Wonderful videos, sad I only found your channel years later. Do you have any updated recommendations on woofers/tweeters now? Many I find to be out of stock, perhaps discontinued/closed business. I purchased some paper RS180 7" Dayton reference woofers after some entry level research (no measurement tools) and I also picked up some Eminence Delta 10s from your woofer recommendations. I am going to build a center trial enclosure with the Daytons and a Morel CAT 298 tweeter - Crossed at 2500hz . The Eminence woofers I intend to turn into Monitors/Towers for TV and Sim racing use, but no tweeters purchased yet. Working through the speaker building literature so I can properly design crossovers. Ill likely make new enclosures and crossovers for both once I learn that. Any thoughts on a recommended tweeter for the Eminence setup? Thanks

Dave Apex well it would come down to budget at application. The SB costs more but is more robust. Building a home theatre speaker you plan to push hard and have a healthy budget? Go with the SB. Building an apartment speaker on a budget? Go with the Vifa. If using a 5” mid like you suggest either will work very well. I didn’t want to have two similar tweeters like this, but they both are awesome so... take your pick really.

I believe that’s a 19mm done tweeter which none are on the list. I’m not a fan of 19mm / 3/4” tweeters because they need to be crossover so high.

wa buster horns are very very efficient. Often 100 times more efficient than a dome tweeter. Because of this they can be padded down and use 100 times less amplifier power and much lower driver distortion. On top of that they reduce the amount of sound bouncing off the walls floor and ceiling. This means room treatment works even better. Many other advantages. The only trouble is erratic off axis response, which the SEOS has perfect off axis response horizontally and pretty darn good vertically.

Jbl 1 inch titanium domes are my favorites. I know... Kinda boring but, i like 'em.

Hey Ryan, Those JBL 2446's w the beryllium diaphragm and the Iwata 300's look really fantastic!! Do you think you could do a video on them? Also, what are the real differences (usability) between the E-jmlc 300 horn and the Iwata 300 in your opinion? I'm building a horn loaded system for sound reinforcement in Vancouver and I'm trying to get as close to audiophile sound as I realistically can. For the smaller tops I'm going to try pairing the Dayton PT2C-8 planar tweeter w the 8" folded horn. However, for the larger sized tops (12" folded horn mids) I'm pretty sure I'll need the efficiency of a compression driver to keep up. These 2446's are quite enticing. Do you think it would be possible to array them (either the Iwata or the E-jmlc) in a vertical fashion and not run into major comb filtering? I'm hoping the vertical dispersion is somewhat limited to allow this possibility. With the addition of the Selenium ST400's for the 8k+ region, it seems like it could be a pretty excellent sounding high end.

You have to design/adjust the filters you're using ( measure/listen, adjust - repeat

I know it is well outside of the sort of drivers you might normally buy and listen to, but if you get the chance check out the RAAL 140-15D-AM with the anamorphic core. It will blow your mind.

@@brk932 definitely three way. Although it depends on the model of the RAAL in question, I run as low as the recommended xover frequency, using the recommended xover slope, and never without an external cap.

I have heard of people using much cheaper BG Neo 10's with the RAAL as well, but I doubt they would have the refinement of the Fibonacci. Damn can't stop thinking about those "Big Daddies" now. I am using a pair of Scanspeak 12MU Illuminators per side in open baffle config for my mids. Currently using my dipole version of the RAAL 140-15-AMs, there not quite as sweet as my monopoles, but they are still nice.

You're doing great work, Ryan. Keep it up. I know you've got some measurement videos but I'd like to see a detailed one about your measurement jig/cabling/wiring. Also, when is your 3-way project video coming out?

Audio Aficionado I ended up focusing on the version with a Fountek tweeter and Morel dome mid so I stuck to one woofer. Eventually I'll work on a version using the GRT145 and probably two woofers.

Martin Freeman probably better suited for home audio. No reason they couldn’t be used in car audio though. Especially the SB29. That would make an excellent car audio tweeter.

Hi! Well you obviously seem to know what you are looking at regarding tweeters and audio in general. So do you think the first tweeter you showed, the Vifa, would make a good replacement for the tweeters in a pair of old Advent speakers? Apparently the crossover freq. is right at 1khz which takes quite a few off the list. I am also looking at this one, the Tymphany/Vifa XT25SC90-04 1″ Dual Ring Radiator Tweeter however both of these are 4 ohm units. According to the rear panel on my Advents, they are rated at 6 ohms so as far as real differences between 4, 6 or 8 ohm tweeters, I am lost.

@@TrySomethingsOnce well the SB can go lower. Still that very low for any tweeter that isn’t horn loaded or with a diaphragm larger than 1.5”. I can’t think of anything that can do that well.

Those Vifa XT25 tweeters are fantastic. I used them in my old speakers. Some others of consideration are from Seas and Scanspeak :-)

Yes Seas T25CF002 and several models of Scanspeak are great also. But to get into the *really* good tweeters, I swear by Gamma VLD12 & 13, while I got ELAC's Jet tweeters in my current speakers. So my top list for tweeters are radically different than for mr Impulse Audio. :)

Alex yes you have to pad it down with resistors or dsp, but that’s extra sensitivity you have in the “tank” for power handling and amplifier headroom. So when you really crank it up the tweeter may see less than 1 watt. That means distortion is lower too 👍

Tweeter in a 3-way Horn System: Radian 475PB CD with Truextent Beryllium diaphragm; JMLC Horn with one inch throat. Would like to try the Electrovoice DC-One DSP and their Editor One Software in lieu of a passive crossover for active management of horn dynamics, time delay, and crossover characteristics including EQ. SEOS 10 would be a good waveguide choice as well.

Impulse Audio - Radian is made in California and they’ve really built a reputation for excellence in bespoke high end theater and sound reinforcement. They have a very close relationship with Materion’s development of the Truextent Beryllium Diaphragm. Quite expensive but they’ve grown market share for a reason. I think that DSP and the tuning software is the future for acoustically matching horn loaded full range speaker systems to any room or venue. DSP solves so many issues with tuneable driver filters, timing delay, and individual driver dynamic response EQ. I’ve resolved to myself to never use a passive crossover in a 3-way horn loaded system again.

How do you match the 107 db tweeter with a woofer with enough output? Wouldn't it be too much treble with an average woofer?

You have to do something called padding down the tweeter. You use resistors or level adjustment in your active XO to bring the level of the tweeter down. This means the tweeter has more “room” for power because 1 watt will make 107db. Makes it really hard to over power it.

Hate the whole beard phenom......but yours looks great. Awesome channel. I want to build a 3 way with dsp. I have a Rane RPM88, which is pretty awesome (I think). a dsp 3 way project, I would build. I can't invest in all the measurement gear AND build the what is essentially a PA system with veneering, if you think about it.....where did you learn all this?

Hi Jennie. I'm personally not a fan of the beard fad either, so I shaved it off. Sounds like a great project. I hope you go for it and pull it off. I learned this stuff just over the years going to DIY events, books, forums, and even my university courses really helped actually. Especially my physics courses. Nerd stuff. There wasn't any internet like there is now. No youtube that's for sure. But it can be learned by anyone.

I was wondering your thoughts on the Martinlogan folded motion tweeters I'm assuming your passion in speaker building is for a lot of different audio application like car two channel outdoor or concert forum I'm invested in my surround sound. Just curious your thoughts on ML design with the 6 -8x the surface area depending on model compared to the typical 1 in dome (whatever different materials) type. I'm looking to make or buy some type of atmos celling speakers with nice tweeters ML Vanquish are super nice but very expensive for each more reasonable the motion ic or helo which the only way I would hear or test them is to buy.ok then bye

joe vigil they do have more area, but I’m not convinced AMTs are they way to go. They’re certainly not the wrong way to go, I just haven’t seen many impressive examples. I’d want to hear a pair before dropping a lot of money on them.

joe vigil AMT = air motion tweeter. Is that what you were asking. For atmos I would strongly consider coaxial. They will be point source and that’s important when seated at all different locations with the speaker 5ft above your head.

I was looking into the Denovo Audio SEOS-12 Waveguide 2/3 Bolt Matte with 1-3/8"-18 TPI Adapter with Dayton Audio D250P-8 1" Polyimide Compression Horn Driver like you suggested but both products are no longer available. Any chance you might be able to update this video with new suggestions? I am looking to make some horn speakers to play with my tube amps and need to do it on the cheap.. Big thanks from Windsor Ontario

Jason Hoffer hmm, it will hopefully come back in stock soon. In the meantime it really depends on what you hope to achieve. There aren’t many horns on the market that do what the SEOS does. I’d maybe check out some of the B&C horns.

@@ImpulseAudioSpeakers Their D230-Ti is really good too. I used them to upgrade some Alto PA speakers and it totally made them sound high end and crystal clear.

I prefer Be Dome tweeters. They sound extremely detailed yet lacks any harshness. If it sounds too sterile you could always get a tube amplifier to color the sound to your personal preference.

Ever used the sb29rdc-c000-4? Yea thos beryllium are so nice. Gotta watch out for the fakes and alloys cones that arent pure. But they are amazing. Ive heard some.

For normal people the Hivi TN25 is probably the flattest dome tweeter ever made. At under $15 will work with any systems (5 ohm).

After years of working with all sorts of dome and ribbon tweeters - I have to say that horns have rocked my world. It’s an adult swim but the results have been more profound than anything else I’ve worked with in my Audio journey.

eksine Its a joke that closed audiophool minds reject superior physics and engineering solutions based on unsubstantiated bias. The BE250 on the SEOS 10 is a very good sounding high frequency setup, with excellent dispersion and directivity. It has efficiency and low distortion AND headroom that sings. The 2446 JBL is a "standard" for headroom and I keep many of them handy.. The Be dias are $600 though, not $ 200. My favored 2" is the BMS 4592ND as it has even lower distortion and greater extension than a 2446.

I am with the horn tweeter crowd. The human ear is very sensitive to distortion, especially in the mid-range of ~300hz to 5khz. And distortion is a function of diaphragm travel, ie the further the diaphragm has to move, the more distortion; so if you minimize diaphragm movement with a horn, you will also minimize distortion. Of course now you have to engineer a suitable phase plug for a compression driver and also a horn. Plus in the manufacturing-level you have to manufacture a phase-plug, in the traditional compression drivers that is machined. Today they are of molded plastic and fiberglass which costs way less. In past research has shown that there are little differences in dispersion between the dome and the cone radiator tweeters, but is a function of driver diameter/size. For best sounds, a horn and compression driver are the way to go, but you pay the price. Speaker manufacturers are in business to make a profit. When you put huge amounts of money into R&D and also in manufacturing, they have to charge the customers appropriately. At retail a typical "run of the mill" compression driver and horn can cost way more than the comparable direct radiator because of the r&d and increased manufacturing costs. Pioneers TAD line is a good example of SotA in beryllium and titanium materials and driver technology, and of course of course the cost of that technology is in stratosphere.

I’m new at these new audio brands. How can you compare these brands to the Scan Speak audio brand? Have you used the Scan Speak brand?

HAZ-EK9 yes I’ve used scan speak. I’ve had a bad experience with a driver from the discovery line up. Wasn’t a good driver at all. Their expensive stuff is really good, but it’s expensive. This list considered value so because the good scan speak stuff is expensive they don’t quite have the value to make this list. Generally good drivers though.

Yes I did not feel they offered enough value to make the list. Especially for most people.

Hmm. I would probably go with the SB29. Similar sounding and the balls to cross low. It’s pretty expensive though. If looking for cheaper then maybe the Dayton ND28. I haven’t used it in a LONG time. Not sure if it’s priced well or even still produced.

Great video mate. you can also consider Beyma CP385Nd , TPL75, TPL150 and FaitalPro HF-108, HF10AK and HF100. these all have amazing response curves.

Aniket Sharma I've been looking at the faital pro HF10AK closely. It looks like a great option for a project I have coming.

My advice is italian brand Ciare model PT-383, a robust and very versatile 38 mm soft dome tweeter, you can cut it where you want, great for home cinema but for 2 channels hifi too, nice efficiency and great natural sound. I have used it in many projects, always satisfied. Comes for 50 bucks each. For what about horns, a cheap but good sounding pro tweeter suitable for real hifi applications is the Monacor model MHD-230 (with round or square horn mouth). GO ahead with all this great audio work, best from Italy! ciao

Soft dome tweeters distort. The part of the driver that is least supported (the top of the dome) is free to change shape while in motion. If the driver changes shape it distorts. This is why Focal only uses inverted domes and they are all rigid. The coil attached to the bottom of the driver contacts it halfway between the crest of the dome and the outer rim of the driver giving it more support. Many people find them hard to work with though and I think it is because they are way less forgiving. Soft dome tweeters by their nature smooth out all of the roughness which in the end actually translates to a loss of detail. I am using Focal as an example because their stock in trade is their level of detail. Soft dome drivers will let you cross them over almost anywhere you want though where with a rigid design like the focals that is not so true.

+Rob Chapman hi, I had the old Tioxid Focals (Titanium with titanium oxide layer for damping resonances), no ferrofluid, but they had problems with energy storage. Dynamics was good with them as the 20mm voice coil is not attached at the edge of the dome as with most tweeters. Didn't hear top of the line JM Labs with Beryllium, since Focal dropped support to DIY enthusiast long time ago. In 1990's Focals were highly regarded and used by many manufacturers, including Wilson. The best implementation of Focal drivers I have had chance to hear was big, high efficiency kit by Orca, but that was long time ago and only my opinion.

I'm from another era and have an entirely different take on tweeters. I have some very different ideas. The first is that tweeters should have the widest dispersion possible. This is exactly the opposite of the way tweeters are designed today and having studied how musical instruments propagate sound the opposite of what they do which is direct most of their energy away from any one listener making reflections important. This is why I studied them and figured out many ways to engineer them. The second best tweeter for dispersion is the Acoustic Research 3/4" dome. This was an improvement over the prior 1" dome. Edgar Villchur inventor of several important innovations in high fidelity invented the dome midrange and tweeter. The 3/4" dome was developed by Roy Allison working fo Villchur. It is a full hemisphere, is not recessed, and is made out of paper which is the best material for speaker cones because friction between the pulp fibers dissipates energy very efficiently eliminating the ringing so typical of metal dome tweeters which IMO are the worst. (Look at Atkinson's FR curves for the new KLH model 5 as an example.) So the tweeter has a falloff of 5 db at 15 khz, 60 degrees off axis. The only better one is Allison's own on his brand which has an elastic section between the central part of the dome and the outermost part. It is driven in such a way that when the center moves outward the outer edge moves inward 180 degrees out of phase. (The MBL speakers do the same thing. The vibrating elements are like slices of melon rinds fixed at one end and being pushed and pulled up and down at the other end.) Not satisfied with the dispersion or power handling capacity of the 3/4' AR tweeter first seen in AR3a Allison used 4 0f them, two facing forward flanked by one on each angled side panel marketed as AR LST and also as Cello Amati by Saul Marantz. In the 1970s AR introduced the first ferrofluid cooled tweeter to increase power handling capacity. My next favorite will come as a shock. It is the endless variants of the Audax AW010E1, a 3/8" tweeter with wide dispersion and frequency response flat to 30 khz. I use them in arrays especially to create reflections and cross them over at about 6 khz with a single capacitor for a single pole crossover. Used in indirect firing arrays their aggregate power handling capacity is enormous and their thermal compression is nil. They do not break up at at any loudness or frequency in their range. For the first 6 I bought from Radio Shack I paid about $11 each. For the next 180 from parts express I paid 28 cents each. And for the last 400 I bought from Parts Express I paid 5 cents each. One of many advantages of these arrays is that their loudness and equalization can be controlled independently of the single front firing tweeter which itself will play at a much lower volume than it would if it had to work alone. Obviously I am not a fan of 2 way designs and my best speaker Teledyne AR9 is a 4 way 5 driver design enhanced with 11 indirect firing 3/8" polys which in aggregate can handle hundreds of watts and reduce thermal compression by a factor of 144. BTW, If you use an significant array of front firing tweeters don't worry about comb filtering. Each tweeter will have comb filtering with every other tweeter. So if you have N tweeters you will have (N-1)! read N minus one factorial which means say if you have 12 tweeters you will have 11 x 10 x 9.... 3 x 2 x 1 sets of comb filters at different frequencies, so many that for all practical purposes they don't exist.

my idea was to use Dayton AMT Pro4, Fostex 208 Sigma as midrange, so the woofer efficiency should be at list around 93/94 db. Your reccomendation is for SB: should be active or passive? SB can be crossed up to 300hz? thank you.

Mauro Ghigliani 93 or 94 dB is pretty efficient. I’d look at the pro woofer options from eminence or Celestion. Depending on your budget you may also like the faital pro stuff. Careful because a lot of pro woofers are not good sealed, like B&C. They have terrible bass when sealed.

Price is irrelevant if your mating that beryllium tweeter in a two-way because you can...$500 tweeter + $300 12 inch woofer crossed over at 1 kh. Top mount the tweeter on top of a woofer box and you have $10,000 speaker. Basically you save money and time with a very good two way. You have to consider that tweeter as mid-range eliminator...

George Zubeck True, he can even get away with the smaller Iwata (600Hz) at ~1kHz mated to a very good 12” mid-bass like the GPA 414 Classics. So more savings in a smaller horn.. Another cool thing about SB29 and XT25 is that you can often exchange them without changing crossover as long as XT25 is BG double magnet version (to match sensitivity). Just a little bit different values in LCR trap (or sometimes not) and that's it so many people can choose which one they like the best. But of course if crossing

Best I have ever heard was the Esotec. But I have not heard all of them.

I have a set of jbl 4722 speakers with the 2452 and a beryllium diaphragm talk about fantastic..

Would the Vifa perform well when crossed over around 2k - 2.5k

@@ImpulseAudioSpeakers Cool thanks. I built a set of home stereo speakers using two 6.5" & the Dayton "Silky" tweeter. Xover point 2.5k (dayton xovers 12db) The 6.5s are the poly cone factory buyout drivers found in the midbass section. I bought 40 of them last yr & will prolly buy a few more cases. Sounds like the Vifa tweeter will work well for my needs. The silky is nice but is limited on its higher end. I listen to a wide array music and think a driver with a better response would help bring all the details out.

Can you please list the hardware you reference in your videos :(
