History fact: Lexington and Saratoga were originally laid down as battlecruisers, but were converted into carriers during construction due to the Washington Naval Treaty, hence the guns on them. Ironically, the guns were effectively useless IRL since the ships typically operated well outside their range, on top of not being useable while the flight deck was in operation.

Additional History fact: Which makes them the USN equivalent to Akagi and Amagi/Kaga as those were also converted from Battlecruiser to Carrier (Amagi was meant to, but didn't, because she was damaged in an earthquake, instead Kaga was converted. Kaga was originally meant to be a Battleship of the Tosa class). Their british counterparts being the three Courageous class carriers that were laid down as Large Light Cruisers.

Saratoga may have her fancy retrofit, but Lex is a lady, and that counts for something.

Azur Lane has keeps making me feel conflicted whether i should play the game how i like things or if i should minmax... on one hand i prefer more mature looking shipgirls (Lady Lex) instead of smol and short ones, on the other hand, Saratoga is the objectively better sister in terms of gameplay...

Lexington and Saratoga are actually Battlecruiser’s converted to carriers so their health being 6k isn’t a big surprise even the gun based skill references this

kinith saephan if you want some fun with the Lexington’s as BCs just look up how many times the design was revised until they actually bothered to start building them only to have to throw all that out and turn them into carriers because of the Washington Naval Treaty one can just imagine the frustration of the designer, the ship yard and the workers who were building them only to be told “hey we need you build these two ships into a new type of ship that has yet to actually be tested in any way and it’s main form of attack is aircraft. Got it thanks”

They had 8 in. gun batteries, on par with most CAs of the time. USS White Plains, CVE-66, managed to fatally wound the Choukai with one of her 5 inchers.

It's a nod to her historical namesake. Lexington and Concord, where the first battles of the American Revolution took place.

Fun fact: irl Lexington and Saratoga was "visualy" identical so sailor had to paint a black vertical strip on Sara's smokestack so that pilot can tell which is which when make landing. Not so much identical in game though.

"Lady Lex" was lexington nickname, I think that is why they made her a bit more mature looking than Sara

They have guns because they were converted from cruisers. They also kept 4 pair of 8 inch naval guns forward and aft of the island. That's how they can provide artillery cover and why it's of the power of cruiser guns.

They actually have the guns due to the USN not believing Planes could work effectively as an offensive weapon, and so they put 8 inch guns onto them just incase Lexington and Saratoga were converted from Battlecruisers, which is why they had higher armor then most carriers of the time

Wrong not underrated because she helped the U.S. win the first aircraft carrier vs aircraft carrier battle in the pacific Battle of the Coral Sea without her help we would have lost in that battle. And this battle was the first carrier battle that neither side fired a single shot at each other.

@@links5957 thats cv12 lexington of the essex class carrier, the lexington here is cv2. Funnily enough the new lex is still a tad smaller than the old lexington. Here the fun fact: zuikaku ijn carrier which injured cv2 lexington enough to sink her in coral sea,1942 was later sank by the cv12 lexington in 1944, karma's a bitch they said.

I like the vid tbh and showing my first Elite CAs. I even used Both of them Along with Big E on an Exercise. Still it kinda sad that Big Sis Lexington doesn't have a retrofit(yet that may happen but I don't think it might happen) and Only little Sara left having one but at least they have some uses. BTW There is one thing before you start with Tirpitz it's her pronunciation is actually Ter-Pit-z but If you don't mind that then I hope your next thoughts vid will go smoothly.

Saratoga(Retrofit) stats line is actually the best of all carrier, boosting the highest AVI stats with, Enterprise reload(+- 1~3), the 4th highest HP and 3rd highest AA. Except for average luck.

@@gravityhurts2910 That's really the running problem with CVs. Unless they have some sort of team synergy, you're hard-pressed to make a compelling case for any one over Enterprise because of her insane base stats and Lucky E being a hell of a drug.

Saratoga, my first real carrier after I started the game, and my main carrier since then (go away Long Island). Great timed barrage, airstrikes and a pretty good service history for the real life counterpart which is at least hinted here and there in the game. Great CV! Really looking forward to Tirptiz :P

Love using Saratoga. One thing that the Witch's Prank skill doesn't specifically mention is that the special strike does normal bomb and torpedo damage on top of the flooding and burning. Because of this, whenever I do the daily for cognitive chips, she sometimes one-shots the boss if enough of the bombs drop right on it, her airpower once you trick her out with super rare planes and auxiliary items is no joke. And that support fire is so good for mob fleets. When I saw her on your to do list, was waiting for this one.

Saratoga used to be one of the corner stone of my second fleet together with Victorious and Hoshou when I was just starting. my first fleet consisted of Long Island, Unicorn and Illustrious with the fleet set up so that Long Island will always be the one to launch an air strike first. Then I had enough powerful ships like Nagato and the fox twins so Long Island went to fleet 2 and replaced Victorious and Illustrious went and replaced Saratoga and Saratoga became a part of my ASW fleet which I rarely sortie.

Hi Hawk. Love your videos. I have to write today because of The amazing skills from Saratoga. She just....well.....kicks but. At least on my fleet. To pair Sara with Enterprise in my fleet means total destruction of the universe. She is so brilliant. I must have worked hard with her and bumped up her skills to the point where she basically destroys everything on the screen. To anyone new to the game I would say that Saratoga is totally a must to work on. She's so worth the effort and yes...oath her. She is SO loving once you have done so. :)

I’m still a relatively new player, but these sisters are mainstays for me. It’s like having one (or two) heavy cruisers as “free” fire support for your frontline while the airstrike(s) warm up. They’ve just crossed Lvl 70 for me, and they help make advancing through content a breeze.

I actively use both of them in boss fleets, Saratoga because she's really good, and Lexington because I've oathed, maxed her out in almost every way, and am just about level 120 now... Assume my waifu bias.

Saratoga was one of four pre-war carriers to survive the war. Herself, Ranger, Enterprise and Long Island in all.

Terror and Erebus are good value ships to have on a farming fleet. They're a good way to get a large barrage skill without the cost of fielding bigger ships like Hood, but they'll lag behind in terms of overall damage.

So I heard you like offense: Saratoga + Lexington Hyuuga (retrofit) Graf Spee + Deutschland w/ their custom 283 guns Destroyer/Torpedo Cruiser of choice ----------------------------------------------------------- 5 carrier strikes, 5 artillery strikes, 3 torpedo strikes, still have defensive backline guns, still have light front guns. Hyuuga can be replaced for -1 carrier +1 torpedo with: Tirpitz, Kaga, Amagi, Scharnhorst or Gneisenau. This is in no way optimum or efficient, but it does have ALL the offensive firepower.

Lol I use that backline in one of my fleets. The sisters will never be apart in my game, here's hoping lex gets a retro

I suspect the gun skill also goes off their aviation as well as skill level. In story the two sisters are actually popular idols with other ships being fans (Z35, Aylwin) while Sandy for her aspirations and memeness is in story, well.... Gridley was KO'd by her singing. As useful as they are for the bulk of the game, they run into a wall in W13 as enemy AA boats, DB's scatter shot nature, and general Aviation resist being its highest there means their DBs will get shot down before firing and/or not doing much damage. Flipside is this set of conditions won't come up in events

Saratoga was my 1st retro. Now shes only doing lvl 100 commisions for me

even though this video is 3 years old I going say this the reason why Lexington and her sister Saratoga have that skill is due to the fact they planned to be battlecruiser but the Washington Naval Treaty scrap that idea due to restriction the treaty place on those nations that sign it

As of march 2020, Saratoga retrofit has gone up a tier, and is now T0 in PVE, according to the Usagi-sensei tier list. So yes, she's highly recommended

Using Saratoga after retrofit is so satisfying even though I have pretty much all carriers in the game.

LOl playing this game while watching and picked up Lexington. I already had Saratoga.

Lady Lex is a very sweet, gentle, mature woman that has captured my favor for quite some time now, along with her counterpart: Yorktown. Those two haven't left my secretary slots since that QoL update.

You miss 2 thing about Saratoga Skill: - Witch's prank, once activated, grant you a pair of free homing Torpedo bomber( like IJN planes) upon airstrike, which they can cause Flooding damage. Trust me, i've used her long enough to the point i have to use Ark Royal for additional Torpedo damage because Sara's torp was so bad they barely hit anything( 70% of the time it miss, while the other 30% hit because the enemies are too crowded and hit was easy part) or with Illustrious for "balance". - No, it's not Houshou with guns, more like BBV with lots of aircrafts, because like Houshou & Zeppy, their gun only can reach a certain range before they drop into water, while their CA guns fire closely resemble of BBV barrage strike (tri-burst with 2 round fired each) and except that BBV can change their guns for different barrage while these pair can change planes for different airstrike timer. That's all. :3 That's all.

i kept grinding and forgot my ships mood was below 30 so i had to make them dock and make a new formation it really is important that you have a backup fleet formation whenever you grind cause you wont know until you go to the dock to see that theyre moods are so low

Since it seems no one pointed it out, their Artillery skill's damage is based on their Aviation stat (as well as skill level), kinda want to run Saratoga with Baltimore just to see how high I can get it to hit

@Jefferson Tong well Sara does more for me, but if we're taking frontline into account yours needs some work. I run Cleveland, Sandy, and Laffey and it goes frontline 6/10, Sara 3/10, Enty 1/10. I also have vestal in the back but as the healer she never gets mvp

@@AndrewA60 I run Sara/tirpitz/lex in the main with Laffey (retro)/Atago/Takao in the vanguard. The MVP slot is pretty evenly split between Laffey, Sara, and Takao.

Unlike the Lexington Sisters, the Pennsylvanias are pretty different in game role. So it may not work so well.

If you're doing Fusou and Yamashiro, you should do Hyuuga and Ise.

I personally pair retro Saratoga with Enty with my vanguard being Cleve and Helena. Then sit back and watch the world burn.

Ah yes, my two favorite Eagle Union carriers. I used both of them, especially the retrofitted Sara-chan, extensively until I was able to assemble two full Ironblood fleets, lol. Nowadays they just idle at the port... get it? Idle idol? LOL. xD Their gun skill is quite good, almost to a point of making me think that they are some kind of powerful CA's in disguise... oh wait, lol. x] Lady SEXington (lol) really needs a retrofit of her own, if you ask me. And a summer skin too. x)

2 words: converted battlecruisers. also nicholas. nicky is a good boat in a diff game if your careful and is a bit of a difference from seal clubbing in clemson

I'd consider a BB or BC of some sort...mostly so that they can be a last line of defense for your backline if necessary. Since you're new: Hood, Warspite, or IJN backliners Yamashiro or Fusou could work...

Sara can beat enty easily in dmg output. Run them together, and see how many time she gets mvp.

lexington and yorktown are ressurected tho. waiting their refit in the future.

Retrofit nicholas she aint half bad and could compete with javelin with tankiness. How many runs btw?
