My mother actually got into the same situation as this, the way she handled it is hilarious, basically, all she did is "if you want to change my son's name, pay the entire hospital bills once I gave birth". after she said that, not a single soul voiced out any objections anymore in the family.

"Narcissism" only applies to the sister n' law. The brother is a straight up simp, while it's quite obvious that the rest of the family either disapproves of the o.p.'s "situation", or 100,000% more likely only gives a shit about the boy in their family that is married to the sister n' law so that they carry on the family name for another generation. Even if the o.p. kept the same last name that's not how it works in some more traditional families where it's the sons that carry on the "legacy". What a shitty legacy that is though... (Not the practice I mentioned, I mean the family in general is just shitty; very).

This is how my older sister operates. I hate it. I have considered leaving everyone in my family, and I've done it for a year and a half but my abusive ex pushed me to be with my hurtful family (so he can fuel my family's behavior and gaslight me too). But, I see that my older sister influences everyone around her. I noticed this after she moved to another country and comes back every once in awhile. It's weird and I have seriously considered not allowing her near my future family when she is this way.

Same thing happened to my parents. My dad's sister in law tried to rename me. My first name was already hard for my parents to agree on. They picked Jocelyn, my aunt pick Rosalind. My mother was pissed. She threw her out of the hospital room and hasn't talked to her in nineteen years, minus a few occasions. In fact I didn't call her my aunt either. She was just Melissa to me and my parents. My grandmother on my maternal side also screamed at Melissa at my first birthday when she showed up with a gift addressed to a Rosalind. To this day if someone mentions her my parents moods almost immediately go down. The funny thing is she tried for years to have a child, specifically a girl whom she would name Rosalind. Turns out she only had a fifteen percent chance of conceiving, my uncle only had a ten percent chance of getting her pregnant. We found this out when I was twelve, my mom laughed her ass off for hours. Then she told her entire side of the family as an act of revenge. My uncle didn't give a damn about it either. The only reason we knew Melissa was pissed was because she drove all the way to Connecticut from Montana. Which is a thirty three hour drive. When she yelled at my parents in front of both of my parents' sides her husband told her to shut the fuck up and let it go. She then turned on him and said that if her wanted to be on my parents side they were getting divorced. He said this and I quote "I don't give a damn what you do. You need to learn that the world is not perfect. So please shut the fuck up or I will call a lawyer." Melissa shut up and left after he said that. From that day forward he was a legend on both sides for his bravery. He even got that divorce anyway. We threw a huge party. It was called The Banishment of the Family Bitch. My mom came up with that one herself. She still has the banner she made.

I actually believe in some ways DIBS can be called. I married into instant family. My husband is divorced with two boys. As much as I adore those boys, I wanted children of my own, and my husband is from a large family and wanted more. So we talked baby names before I was even pregnant. We had a girl's name picked first; the middle name I had picked before I even knew my husband. But...when I do get pregnant, I find out it was the very name he and his ex-wife had planned for a girl. His ex was a little hurt that this name was discussed. I told her I would change the first name, but asked if it was ok to keep the middle since I had it picked before I knew my husband, and it turned out to be special to both our sides. She had no problem with that.

The sad thing about this situation is, if you take all of OP's reactions out of context, *she* would definitely seem to be the crazy one. For example, giving a baby a nickname isn't really a bad thing, but doing so for the SOLE PURPOSE of getting back at the mother because she took 'your' baby name is. It sucks that the family is already incredibly biased in favor of the SIL. It would probably be impossible to convince them that she was in fact the selfish, controlling one in the situation. If OP decides to move, she'll probably end up being known as the crazy family member for the rest of her life.

I can relate, but instead of a sister in law. This story was my older sister incarnate. Hawai’ian Tradition says your sister or great aunt names your baby for you. We have Hawai’ian family, but it’s pretty much your own choice wether or not who chooses the name. In my situation when my wife was pregnant, my sister went around telling everyone in my family the name we would give our first born was stupid & kids would make fun of her. She then said she has a name picked for my daughter. She claims it’s her right, because her daughter’s full name was named by her husband’s Great Aunt & she was following tradition. That’s Great for her, but my sister has been abandoning me, leaving her daughter at her friend’s night club alone growing up & dumping her responsibilities as a parent on the Uncle me to babysit her from 6 months to 7 yrs old. On top of this…. this is my sister who would sell my property in elem & high school so she could buy gifts for her self, boyfriends, and so called friends. She’s stolen $$ from my parents & shopping center stores. She only escaped juvy because our Godfather is a senator. I miss my handheld game & watch games & my t-shirts & toys I grew up with. She sold it at a local swap meet. I asked her how come she didn’t want to sell her things & claimed I need to grow up. I cut her out of my life the second my daughter was born. She went as far as to try far as to try & steal my wife & i’s nintendo ds lite from us saying we don’t need it. You’ll be to busy. She then tried to change my daughter’s name on paper at the hospital & the nurse then asked us. She claimed my wife & I told her to. After that day. Aunty is now Uncle. I tell my kids to call her that. Shes got a beer belly now & a mustache to match ROFL 🤣

This is just straight up messed up!! First, the sister-in-law decided to steal the spotlight and pretend to be the one pregnant. Second, it's just so idiotic of the whole entire family ganging up on the OP and saying that she was "controlling" when they couldn't even use 1% of their brain to know the actual person is who is controlling. Third, how come the sister-in-law gets treated better than the OP when it was obvious that she was ruining the OP's time of having a child for the first time... even with the clearly unreasonable excuses and having a meltdown for literally no reason. Fourth, why does the sister-in-law get to name the baby and not the OP? It's literally the OP's CHILD. I don't know what gave the sister-in-law the idea to name a baby that isn't even her's. Plus, the name "Gilly" is just.... how is it cute!? "Grace" is better than "Gilly" in my opinion. I don't even think Gilly is suitable for the baby at all. I'm glad the OP left her family... they don't even know better and has lost a family member because of their stupidity.

It's psychotic to call "dibs" on names, especially since the SIL was having a boy. She was probably going through an entire baby name book and she was calling "dibs" on every single one, just out of spite.

My mom was pissed that she wasn’t allowed to come back with me but they told her it’s not her body going through anything, it was mine, so they needed to speak to me to make sure this is my choice. Which of course it wasn’t. And they knew that. I explained that I didn’t want to go through with this but my mom wouldn’t let me leave without “proof”. The woman asked if I was safe to drive home with her. And I told her yes because my parents had already kicked me out and I was living on my own. So all I needed to do was pretend for the car ride home. She brought a nurse in to explain the situation and that’s when we made a plan. They told my mom they were giving me the pills and you take one at the clinic and one the next day. They sent me home with a circular Tylenol in this envelope thing so they didn’t break any laws giving me a prescription bottle with medication that didn’t match the label. Then they refunded me half of the money that the church paid (they couldn’t refund all but I wasn’t expecting a penny so I wasn’t mad at all), and they sent me home with a packet that apparently all patients get when they take the pills. So we literally pretended to go through with the procedure just so my mom would take me back home and that’s when I completely cut her and my dad off. I didn’t speak to them again till that same baby was 2 1/2. The best part was that the nurses and counselor at the clinic got me in contact with a ton of resources to get everything I needed for my baby. One of the nurses actually gave me a ton of her baby stuff she no longer needed like a stroller, clothes, bottles, blankets, and she personally bought me two huge packs of diapers…when I tried to pay her for at least some of it she absolutely not. The most hypocritical part about this entire situation was that the church who paid for the procedure would preach against abortion almost weekly and at the very least monthly. They were one of the churches that stand outside clinics and “protest” by screaming at patients walking in and trying to get license plate numbers so they can “expose these demons” yet when it “affected their optics” (their words not mine) abortion is suddenly a solution 🙄 and believe it or not that doesn’t even come close to what this church specifically did to me as a child. They’re the reason I no longer go to church and choose to work on my relationship with God privately… The only reason I spoke to my parents years later was due to the fact that I became pregnant with my second child. I didn’t announced my pregnancy until we had 8 weeks left because the pregnancy was filled with scares. I almost miscarried at 4 months, labor started at 6 months, and my body started treating the pregnancy (according to the doctor) Kirk a virus and he was actually losing weight no matter much I ate, rested, or stayed hydrated. He came a little over a month early and the day before I had him I had an ultrasound where the tech and the doctor both explained that they needed to schedule me to be induced since baby wasn’t doing good…but the stress from inducing him when there’s already a lot of stress on him could kill him. So dad and I needed to prepare just in case. My parents ended up calling me that same day and I just broke down and explained what was going on. I swear to you that my dad said “well, it’s not like you need another child anyways. This is for the best.” No “I’m sorry”, no “how can we help”, not even a “we’ll pray for you”. They were literally relieved when I told them my son is at risk of dying. My children didn’t affect them in any way seeing as I cut off contact after what happened with my first son and to this day I still kick myself for answering my dads call that day. The fact that my son possibly dying brought them joy made me physically ill. I was supposed to be induced 48 hours from my last ultrasound but thankfully my son decided he was coming on his own. I woke up that night having major contractions and within two hours of me waking up my son was here. But the best news is he didn’t even need the NICU! He came out hungry as hell and spent the first 3 months of his life sleeping and eating lol. He is 8 years old now 💙 Now my parents live on the opposite side of the country and i no longer speak to my dad. I will say he did apologize for everything he said and did to me all throughout my life and he said he’ll never forgive himself for his actions (my dad is manic bipolar so he doesn’t remember a lot of things he said and did). I told him of course I forgive him but I don’t want contact like he wanted. I’ll say merry Christmas and check twice a year tops but I have to keep my distance. It sucks but I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to have a normal relationship with him…there’s too much trauma there. My mom never apologized for anything. She feels like since she wasn’t the one abusing me or belittling me she has nothing to be sorry over…she fails to acknowledge that as a mother she was supposed to protect me and actually be my parent. I don’t “hate” them but I’ll never be able to open up to them or form a bond children are supposed to have with their children. I will say that I genuinely believe my dad has changed though. A few years ago he asked me if I would be ok with him sharing our story publicly and I said yes. He goes to meetings similar to AA as well as advocating for better mental health treatment options.

Something similar happened with me when I was expecting my forst child except it was my ex partner, it was so bad that when me, and my husband found out I was pregnant I was excited, but at the same time freaking out cause my ex had ruined an experience that was supposed to be wonderful. He complained about my constant nesting, and my constant need for wanting everything clean. He got mad at me when I had cravings, and instead of saying hey honey we don't have the money right we'd get halfway to the store ask me if I was paying, then yell at me cause I told him I didn't have any money, and he would get mad asking me if I expected for him to pay for everything, sad thing os out of everything that I had for her he bought 1 onside, the rest was what I could get, and what I got for her babysitter then when we broke up had the audacity to say everything at the baby shower should be split in half because it was a gift for us. Then when I tried packing my stuff up he yelled at me the whole time then stole all of the baby stuff I had for her which at this point I was on maternity leave so my parents had to help me rebuy everything for her when I moved back in with them. My whole experience with my first child was ruined by my ex that I feared my husband for a bit while I was pregnant with my second child my husband's first. If he got loud, and not necessarily towards me cause he rarely raises his voice at me or our kids but in general I would cry and ask him to leave me be I had multiple panic attacks when he got loud cause of PTSD from my ex. My husband started trying not to yell, or get loud around me, or our kids he's a gamer so he mostly gets loud with his games. I never nested with my son, because I was scared my husband would get mad, and basically my whole pregnant with my second I was to scared to ask for anything. But my husband's traits are what brought me out he would kiss me, and my belly before he left for work, he would talk to our son while I was still pregnant. If I randomly grabbed his hand and placed it on my belly to feel our so kick his face would light up and he'd start telling me how much he loved me, and that he couldn't wait to meet our son. And all his traits were the complete opposite of my ex but it saddened me that because my first pregnancy was ruined, I was to scared to enjoy my second one.

This is what happens when the pushover of the family finally grows a backbone and starts focusing on T their own lives. The rest of the family is always mad and calls you selfish because they are so used to you doing anything they want whenever they want. They don't see that they're picking on you, and don't think it is a big deal and that you should get over it.

I pity the boy growing up with a mother like the OP's sister in law. I had an aunt displaying this kind of mentality, end result: her husband left her, her oldest daughter does not even recognize/acknowledge her when meeting in public and her youngest only kept contact because of being religious.

I feel like the family gets what they deserve. They belittled OP, took advantage of her, treat her like sh*t? Then they don’t get to be part of OP’s life, her baby’s life, they don’t get to be a family. That’s actually devastating for them but I congratulate OP. She did the right thing and pushed a toxic @$$hole family out of her life when they were completely unwilling to treat her with any form of dignity.

Am I the jerk? I have a litter cousin Michelle she is 10, she gets everything. I personally used to give her attitude when she gave me attitude when she was little but after a year she got (half.) mature for a 10 year old and we stopped fighting.I felt so happy that we worked stuff out, I started to only get mad at my grandparents now (keep that in mind) so when the family had a fight they came in play. I hardly fight with my grandparents but when I do I use tactics that they use against me so they can’t say much. My little cousin got a budget for a huge renovation for a project we are both on. When I saw her screaming 100 dollars!!! I snapped I got so angry at my grandparents over and over even through the “she’s ten!!” (And yet they praise her for being mature) my cousins plans were to paint a wall, I guess I said something about her scribling? My uncle said she felt hurt and I was a rude girl, to my mother his older sister.she flipped (this was told 4 months after the issue) I heard multiple phone fights from my mother and him, at first my grandparents sided with him(the golden child) but after rude remarks from me and my mother they sided with us. Next my uncle pulled Michelle out of things with my grandparents, I flipped! I got mad at him my mom got mad it him and so did Michelle she was hurt and so were my grandparents. Turns out because it was we fight, my cousin and I didn’t fight for over 2 years, I cared for her and I protected her. She was my little sister now( that’s how I treated her) she read the same book series I was obsessed with I tried to give her some books she needed but she said “my dad won’t let us meet with the grandparents because we fight” I flipped but at him this time. I am thinking of taking high school classes and math things (long story) so he asked me about math stuff and how forth graders are meant to be learning 4x4x4x4 I said that’s multiplecation he also said she’s learning division I said that’s weird learning both at the same time? He said she’s just smart like that right in front of my mom I struggled with academics so reading was all I had so when I aced math it was a big improvement so when my uncle commented on something about math in front of my mom I flipped my face turned to happy to a mean girls face (ifykyk) my mom took my aside and said I get he was rude but showing faces is rude also. But about two hours after getting home I heard “you *****! Why would you comment on math in front of her you know she’s working on it!” I know this sounds so bad and I probably sound like the jerk but I have more story’s about what used to happen with my cousin and my grandparents.
