My sheep got divorced. AND ALMOST US!🤦‍♀️ (sorting sheep & questionable retail therapy) Vlog 296

This week we pulled the rams from the ewes after 21 days exposed... I call it the Big Divorce. And after a rough morning with hubs, I wasn't so sure about us too! LOL.
Thankfully, we got over it and life on the sheep farm went on.
For some retail therapy, I was so excited to finally pick up my HAY CHOPPER!!
Hoping this will work!
Also started and finished hoof trimming the rams, and could finally see some differences in genetics when it comes to these hooves.

Dog Sense 101. She is yawning to diffuse stress. She knows when you start talking that you will take your time to open the door. Opening the door is highly exciting for her. Her stress (or excitement) builds if you don’t open the door and dogs release stress by yawning.

Strawchopper 101. Sometimes the second time you start it, you either don't need the choke or only need half choke. They are always a pain in the ass to start if you stall them once. Make sure you blow the hay or straw off the motor when you are done, the motor gets hot and will catch the hay or straw on it on fire. The motors on these things wear out within the year. A Honda motor will last longer, the other kinds, less so. The motors are really easy to change out, and are not really worth fixing sadly. Scrap metal will take them when you are done with them. All in all, I would definitely recommend the buckets that hook onto the tellehandler to chop hay and straw, they are easier labour wise and tend to cause fewer problems! Ok I'll shut up. Hope you have a great day, your doing a good job!

Hi, I farm sheep and goats on a small scale in the hills of Victoria, Australia. Our pastures are often boggy on the lower parts and I learnt the following that may be helpful to others. Firstly an increase in grain based feed always leads to hoof and horn growth. Secondly I selectively breed for black feet as these seem to be tougher and more inclined to snap away rather than split, curl etc for those farmers with sheep on pasture. Thirdly trace amounts of copper in feed prevents foot rot for me - never seen a hint of it - and seems to toughen the hoof. As ever, context is everything, but in my circumstances this information has made dealing with feet so much easier. Thank you so much for your time, energy and honesty in producing your videos so we can all be better farmers together.

I so get you on hooves. My Saann dairy goats made me nuts. For 5 yrs I could do them every 6 mos no problem as I had put concrete blocks around the waterer but then got a new buck... his had to be done every 6wks and all his offspring grew elf curl at the tip in no time. Went through trimmers like you do and only had 10 critters. Buck was so uncooperative, wish had the critter flipper but had to bungee cord him to the cattle panel fence. Super heavy bungee across chest, abd and hips and son bribing him with treats. Worst thing was he had great personality, gorgeous kids... thanks for reminding me of the frustration.

I love as you’re drafting you can tell a Ram is on his way, not because you’ve pushed the gate across but because they’re much slower to walk through. Also I was hating on these birds in the background chirping away because they are so loud and then about thirty seconds later you apologise for it haha Currently sowing in Australia, don’t have auto steer.. which is crazy, I sow 3500acres, so massively multitasking whilst I watch your daily updates. I’m just part way through my lambing, my lambing shed is partially constructed and not up in time for this lambing (annoyingly!) but because of all the small bits of information that I don’t know and have learnt here I’ve become an even better farmer and this year I’m having the best survival rate ever! So thanks, to not just Sandi and Family but this bigger sheep community who sends in ideas that we all use. Absolutely love the podcasts Mark does.. and that you join in on too, so informative, I feel a little stupid how caught up I am in my farming bubble.

Hi again SANDI I know you chose to allow those mean spirited nasty comments get to you and yes attention zeroed in on the issue but honestly what you found out is that you had done a good job with your trimmings except for those few ewes. So ok check them sooner or more often but honestly you had listened to yourself and what you know to do and you did it well! Actually with the large group you have you really know your system and what works for you! Any positive comments and suggestions fine and dandy. Helpful tips are usually fun and or appreciated. But it's the rest of the crap and the delivery of it that attempts to undermine your system your confidence and your own worth much of which you mention! It's not worth allowing those negatives into your mind for the resulting damage to yourself. You need to work on confidence in yourself your business. And keep doing the great job you're doing!!! Pay better attention to and accept all the positive and supportive comments of the good job you're doing! Life equals choice and yours will be much happier and more peaceful if you choose that way to live... Thx as always and another hug from afar!

For the birds… Just randomly string fishing line thru the rafters to fowl the birds wings. It doesn’t hurt them. They avoid it and go away. In outdoor restaurants here in Florida, birds fly down and take food off tables or out of hands. So, zig zag line and birds go away. Falcon tried to eat my little dog. But husband had fishing line to outside antenna to steady antenna. Fallon caught it’s wing, then flew away. Dog was saved. Typed this to you before, but guess my msg didn’t rise to top of list. This can be put up when you get a chance or have tarp maintenance men do line. I tied fishing line spool to rock and threw it up over yard to several places and tied ends to fence and over roof in just a few places. Wonderful Smiles, Belinda R.

When you first started buying big squares and talked about the problem with the tmr not chopping it up, I remembered your chopper and hay head. Perfect solution, chop into your chopper boxes outside to keep the dust out of the sheep barn and your self. Then unload into telehandler and dump into tmr to feed. It's a little extra work but you could chop a wagon load at a time when you have time and it would always be ready for you. But it does mean starting a tractor everyday in addition to the telehandler. Looks like your way should work just fine, hope the dust doesn't get to making a mess of everything. I used these on a dairy farm 40 years ago, dry hay can really get dusty. Hope this helps stretch your hay supply and gives you better mixing and consumption. Good luck on the crops, the garden and the upcoming scan.

I don't know D%^k about sheep, but I do know engines. The carburetor on that Honda engine has a high speed and low speed jet in it. If you ever get an engine to idle but not able to spool up, 90% of the time it's the high speed jet that's plugged. And it really doesn't take much to plug it because the holes are so small. In your case, I think it was just that the engine has sat and not run for a while and garbage has collected in the carburetor. It's also possible that the hard starting could be caused by that as well, because often that jet will squirt in the starting process and you may not be getting that squirt. It's not hard to fix. Watch a KZread video and even you'll be able to clean it out.

When you do the next hoof trimming I would scan the ear tags into the system to get an exact date and then when you go to evaluate the hooves again scan the tag to see when the last trim was and then from there you can gauge what is the best range between hoof trimmings so they don’t get too bad on you again and your able to cut your time down.

Yes, you had dried blood on your hand. I can rarely go to the barn, do work and come inside without scrapes, cuts, or gouges on my hands, too. Do you like myself, find that some cuts and scrapes get infected within a day? I use a nail brush, soap, and warm water to clean any cuts, but some just seem to infect anyway. I think it's the poo and mud.

Hey! I've been watching your videos for awhile. Love, love, love you stuff and authenticity. I'm a dog trainer. I wanted to give you a heads up that dogs often yawn when they are stressed or anxious. Your pup is probably yawning because she is trying to figure out what you want from her. If she knows down-stay you could put her into down before you start talking to the camera to give her a "job" to do. I wish I was nearby so that I could come and teach her some ways of being calm, especially around things like hoof trimming but I'm all the way in the deep SE of America and WAY too far away from you. Down-stay would be a great thing to work on though. If she can stay 1 hour in down-stay (not as hard as you think to teach!) she would be fairly easy to train around the sheep to be calm because then her #1 priority would be looking to you for guidance. Thank you for all your videos! You are the one and only channel on KZread that I actively keep up with.

If you don't plan to move that hay chopper you could switch the engine out for an electric motor. You can also take a square piece of plywood and nail two short lengths of two by four to it and then run that swing wheel up on it to keep it from moving when you start it.

Sandy, if you went back and looked at their lambing videos, and watched what you did, could it be you forgot to shear and trim them with all the problems with the roof and stuff. It can happen. You also went on a vacation.

Am happy you got the jobs done and pray the roof stays good. Love the sheep and especially the lambs. Love the way you set your priorities and then get it done. Whew. Watching you reminds me of my younger days and working. Building fences, clearing the brush and working with the animals. Good you have something you love to do. Thank you for taking the time to share your life with us. More intertaining than the old soap operas. Never did like them. To much sick junk. Oops. Probably stepped in there. Anyway. Thank you againg for the videos. Loving watching the little lambs and their moms and if course you handling them. God bless

Well, it sounds like roller-skate wheels. The softer wheels tend to be more cushy on concrete, but are better for outdoors because they don't wear down as quickly on asphalt/concrete. The harder wheels tend to be fast on wood, have less cushioning, and wear down very quickly on concrete. So the sheep with the softer hooves won't wear on the concrete as easily as the ones with harder hooves.

Looks like a dirty or old spark plug;)) My suggestion- switch that engine with electric motor, add an electric blower with a flex hose, to vacuum the chopped hay directly in to the feed mixer, install it stationary, no wheels.

Could you possibly get some medium sized flat pieces of plywood (maybe a metre by a metre or so) and glue rocks, pebbles and bits of concrete to it. Then place it down flat in the pen. Each time the sheep walk over it they'd wear their hooves down a little. You'd have to take it out and rinse it/shake it off like once a week or so, but it could really help with their hoof management, maybe?

Hi Sandi I have been watching your sheepishly KZread for quite some time. I am upset when those people rip into you. Sure you have learned a lesson about the Hoover trimming but for goodness sake there is no need to be rude to you. One thing I shudder when I see it, you wear a mask when you load hay into your pretty new feed chopping thingie, but please please wear glasses or goggles. I speak from experience, we were house sitting looking after a garlic farm where they have horses. I was feeding up and flipped the hay over the fence ad a tiny bit flew up into my eye. Because we are in the country and specialists are quite a way away, I had it there for 2 weeks before we could get an appointment by which time the skin had begun to grow over it. Very painful time. Francis the ram looks like a sweetie😂😂 We retired to Gayndah in country Queensland 2 years ago, have a beautiful old house which is what we call an “Old Queenslander” apparently over 100 years old. We have planted some veggies and are updating the bathroom right now. What is more exciting though is we have had a friend build us an amazing chicken house and bought 2 pullets and are hoping soon to have some eggs. They are so funny to watch scratching around in the leaf litter we have put down on one half of the floor. I love watching your Blogs. Love Marianne Boot

Wish I had the hay chopper back in 2007! Old lady horse with bad teeth did a lot of spitting out of wads of hay decided that she didn’t want her pellets anymore. In her last few weeks of life. I would sit out on my front porch for hours with pruning shears chopping splits of alfalfa into small easy to chew pieces.

Sucks that the hay chopper was giving you a rough time. Something you might want to consider when working the motor next time is to put a chunk of 2×4 or 4×4 behind the back wheels at a minimum (I'd advocate a chunk at the front wheel too) to keep the cart from moving while wailing on the pull cord. My shoulders are shot & every bit of "wasted" movement costs me more physically, so it's something I learned a LONG time ago. Might help 😉 Thanks so much for your videos! You're living out some of my dreams ❣️

Sandi there is a guy in Scotland that trims cows. His channel is called the hoof GP. He uses a grinding wheel. For the sheep with the tough hooves would this work? Rather than struggling it seems that you could get through things faster that way. The hooves look similar (but smaller).

Try making a block to hold the pivoting wheel in the chopping cart. It will make it Soooooo much easier to start by holding the unit still while starting it. Maybe you can find a guy in town to do a tune-up on that Honda Engine. At least change the Spark Plug. Check the SparkPlug Wire and Terminal for cracks that the spark ⚡️ can leak current from. Maybe the carburetor fuel bowl needs cleaning. Check a Honda equipment shop or something online to see if that Honda motor has an electric starter.
