    I love putting avocado in a breeder bin. It gets them close to each other, which leads to other activities. 🙂 Even after they have eaten all of the avocado from the shell, you will find worms clustering together within the shell. It's a worm no-tell motel.

    Have Joe cut a hole in the back of the cover. Make it big enough to put a vacuum hose in it. Run the vac when grinding and it will collect the dust. so it doesn't seep out. Just make sure it has a good bag with low micron capability. Or even better. Get a dust collector from Woodcraft and hook that to it.

    You are on the right track with the beet powder, what I do is use 50# bags of dried molasses which is beet sugar. It is the ingredient that really puts a shine on the worms. Dried molasses is also the 1 ingredient that allows worms to stay in a container long past harvest and keeps them healthy which is worth it, especially in the wintertime. A good source of vitamins is milk replacer.

  • @TheGardenAndWormLady

    I knew about the dried molasses I didn’t know that it allowed them to stay a little longer, thank you for the great info. There is a type of straw That I buy here that has molasses in it. I gave that to them occasionally and they like it. In my next video I’ll show you guys. Beets are incredible, I was poisoned as a child and eating beets saved my life, true story

    How do you feed your's molasses? Do you mix in with your feed or just sprinkle over the bedding?

  • @wormsforlife7352

    @wormsforlife7352

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@troydunn6228 It is mixed in with the ground grains. It is also used in worm casting tea, which is used to inoculate the worm bedding. The worm chow is top fed daily and lightly misted with water and BTI. The dried molasses is also mixed with grains for breeding in buckets @ 14 or 21 days (depending on species) the recipe is a little different for the advanced procedures. For a top feed 2/3 cup of D.M. to 4 cups ground chow is a good mix.

    @@wormsforlife7352 I appreciate the reply. I also use the dry molasses. Somewhat have stopped due to the worms loving the Sweet Feed I have been giving them. Of course it is full of molasses. Do you find the BTI helps with pests? I think I can learn a lot from you! Just building a wormery.

  • @wormsforlife7352

    @wormsforlife7352

    @@troydunn6228 The BTI is a wonderful product. It is used always, from the start with the worm tea inoculation for bedding to the daily top feedings. The BTI is also great for eliminating fruit flies by spraying down food scraps and coffee grounds. If you are serious about worms and the production of worms and castings. The best advice I can give you is to get in touch with and talk to your local landscaper suppliers a lot of them have old recipes for making worm peat, if not good compost or peat works very well too. Buy the stuff by the yard, shred it so it falls thru a 1/8 screen, inoculate it with casting tea containing BTI.

    In your recipe, you say 2 parts Oats (Oat Meal), but your buckets hold maybe 4 times the volume (1-gallon buckets and then 1 qt for the other containers). If that is so, you have 8 parts Oats (2 gal), 1 part Alfalfa (1 qt), 1 part Bird Seed (1 qt), ... And your oyster shells and chicken crumbles look like 1/4 part (not 1/2 part) and maybe 1/4 part whole wheat flour

Since I started doing this seems like the worms are always on top feeding on this mix. Works for me on my small scale operation using the factory 360 . I have 6 trays but usually only use 3 or 4 but with changover may go to more as the worms are more active and are producing more worms.

  • @TheGardenAndWormLady

    You know that’s what they say but I believe it only applies to veggie scraps. Chow is different it’s a lot more higher in protein. I have a tray of red wigglers right now that I have on the table I’m sure you’ve seen them in the video. They are eating the chow that I put on there every day. They usually eat it every two or three days. I would think that those are just estimates. I have also seen 2 pounds of red wigglers that are already established in their home devour a large amount of food. I have never put 2 pounds of chow.

    When you squeeze your bedding drops of water should fall out. Worms usually like to explore the bin and they will crawl up the walls and even on the ceiling. The problem is when hundreds of them are crawling out then you know something is wrong. I don’t think a bin can be too big because they will multiply.

    Do you monitor ph. and how. Open my container some were trying to get out, so it seems. Also some were very skinny and almost dead.The majority are plump.

    Get yourself a pH meter. They sell them on Amazon. You need to add dolomite lime your pH should be 7. 6 is OK but kind of low eight is OK but a little high seven is perfect. I had like a tablespoon and then I measure the pH and go from there. If your worms are thin, they are probably lacking in moisture. Usually my Wormser chunky because I keep the bins at about 80% moisture.

    They are very similar to the red wiggler they are just darker in color but they behave the same way. They do take a little longer to mature but as they’re young they still have huge appetites.

    Yes you can but only sprinkle a little bit on the surface because it heat things up. Do your best to find another source of food whether it be food scraps or a natural form of food like dry leaves or some thing. You can also use oatmeal or cornmeal. The other day we had grits for breakfast and I had like a teaspoon leftover that I didn’t cook. So instead of throwing it away, I just sprinkled it on top of the worms and they went crazy.

    And when you reference one part or two parts or half part, you mean by weight correct?

  • @TheGardenAndWormLady

    @TheGardenAndWormLady

    It could be weights or tablespoons or teaspoons whatever your measurements are. Like if I do one part corn, and one part oats for example, if I use cups, I’ll measure 1 cup oats and one cup corn. Just make them equal. I just make mine and huge amounts. But most people only need a little bit so if you use cups or half a cups and stored in a container, you’ll have it for a while.
