My Review of No Rest For The Wicked

Ойындар

I'm Raxxanterax and I make Build Guides, Leveling Guides, Tier Lists and More for Diablo 4, Last Epoch, Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2. I played through the No Rest For The Wicked Early access yesterday and had a great time. If you're unfamiliar, NRFTW is a Souls Like ARPG from Moon Studios, here's my first impressions of the game and some things I think could use improvement.

    The whole inventory system is definitely not a "souls game" problem, it's local to this. Souls games generally have unlimited storage that you can access from any rest point, and your active inventory isn't really restrictive - the main reason to stash items is just to clear out the clutter when menuing.

    I think demon souls still had this as a thing, where everything you picked up was counted as carry weight and you had to bring it back and store it. They quickly learned from that mistake.

    @@maxmustermann3938 it was really weird, despite having limited inventory, it has basically no limit to healing items since they weight nothing, you could hold 99 of every healing item if you farmed them, which also trivialized boss fights and areas. With that said, I'm not opposed to games trying out new things inside an established genre, I don't think trying to implement limited inventory and resource management into a Souls like game is this forbidden thing, let them cook.

    For me Elden ring had the best inventory system and that is what every game should have. I am not interested to do any inventory management and often it makes me just lost interest when stash is full of stuff and I just need to think all the time what I need, what I don't need etc. That said I am gonna go play Elden ring again with my 4th character and maybe 7th playthrough. the best game for me and that is gonna be hard to beat

    Yeah, this is more of a survival game problem. But even more egregious than that. I genuinely think the devs intentionally did this to bloat the game's playtime because they knew what was in the early access was not long enough. Seriously, with a Hub and item management equalled to a FROM game, this game would not even be 10 hours long without the crucible filler.

    The thing about rolling towards the monsters is that enemies in these games typically have lingering hitboxes designed to catch you in a roll so if you roll away the sword hitbox will probably still be active at the end of the swing and hit you, whereas if you roll towards the enemy you use your invincibility frames from the roll to bypass their attacks entirely. Some souls games even bait you into rolling in because its what you learned works just for them to have an attack that hits behind them.

    @raxxanterax thanks for the review. I watched your playthrough and agree on many of the points raised here. A few notes if you do delve into Fromsoft Souls games (from someone with thousands of hours in the games): - The stash issue here is a non-issue on Fromsoft games. You have a limit for consumables on your person, but any extras are auto-stashed. The stash is not infinite but can hold a huge quantity (999, etc). And there's only a single stash to draw from. In the last few games they'll even auto-top off your inventory, drawn straight from the stash! - Durability differs from game to game, but you never perma-break an item. If it's fully broken, you can repair and continue to use it. - Stats, backstabs, weapon abilities, dodge rolling, i-frames, etc should all feel comparable - so you'll have a head start having learned those here! - Crafting consumables was only added in Elden Ring, in prior games these are drops or from vendors. - Finally, if you're considering playing a Souls game, I'd recommend starting with Dark Souls 1: Remaster. It's an older game, but still holds up tremendously well. Later games refine the formula and add quality of life, but it'll be much harder to enjoy going from Elden Ring -> Dark Souls than the other way around. Plus it features a similar Metroidvania style world that's interwoven and has a ton of shortcuts for progression. Personally I'd play the Souls game in this order: Dark Souls 1-3, Bloodborne (PS4 only), Demon Souls Remaster (PS5 only), THEN Elden Ring. Elden Ring is kind of like a "best of collection" of all the other games, while still being unique in it's own right. Plus I think you'll appreciate it more seeing the evolution! But, by all means go straight to Elden Ring if you wish it's the most modern and accessible. I'm confident you'll have a blast either way! These are some of the best games ever made!

    I personally think durability is a shitstain on gaming no matter the sense. Want a gold sink just make me lose money when I die, don't make me decide whether I need to go back to fix some shit. Borderlands has this sorted. I much prefer losing money on death than needing to go back and repair my gear.

    In many games its unnecessary, but in this game it actually is more than a gold sink. It makes you think about how you manage gear, it also forces you back to town. It's not just a simple gold sink and there is actual decision making involved around it.

  • @chidori0117
    @chidori0117Ай бұрын

    My question about durability is why is it in the game and what does it do from a developer perspective? As you mentioned its supposed to punish deaths ... in an ARPG (softcore) where there is otherwise little consequence to dying loosing EXP or gold in such a manner is an OK way to incentivice you to not die. But this game is closer to the Souls formula where the punishment of dying is not being able to progress, especially on bosses. There really is no additional need to punish dying in these games A lesson that presumably the souls games themselves learned with DS2 and its durability and health loss system ... which was stupid in that game as well. I think durability systems are system that developers ofthe dont really think enough about and just include because they think its normal to have them but I think they only make sense in very specific cases and are otherwise insignificant at best and terribly annoying at worst.

But it's also pretty cool to offer feedback, and interact with (constructive members of) the community. I like this game from what I've played so far, but I don't know that I click with the devs talking about bringing the ARPG genre forward. To me, this game almost doesn't tickle any of the spots in my brain that an ARPG does, it really just fully does feel like a Soulslike except with five minutes of getting used to a different camera, but past that it doesn't even register anymore. Edit: for the people commenting, I don't care about various definitions of an ARPG, I'm talking about the developers themselves invoking the Diablo-style ARPG comparisons in what I'm referring to. They're being very specific even if you feel the term isn't inherently.

    I mean even in this perspective there have been soulslike or at least souls inspired games before, mostly pretty small indie titles. The problem the devs had when marketing this game is that they focsed WAY too hard on the diablo/POE side of things when marketing their game, when it was obvious from the gameplay that it was not going to be that style of game and had WAY more modern souls-like aspects then anything from diablo-like ARPGs. I also agree that the devs got a little too ahead of themselves when talking about pushing the ARPG genre forward because imo this game is not really unique compared to other isomectic indie games, it just stand apart sue to the excellent art style and animations. The combat alone is a very OVERUSED combat style that many games have been adopting since the souls games got big, and there have been plenty of modern isometric souls-likes that use the more slow methodical combat system, so they saying this has never been done before was just wrong. My biggest problem with games with souls-like combat is that the diversity of builds/playstyles are so dumbed down that it almost goes against the core of what makes diablo-like ARPGs so good and replay-able. There is only so many ways you can diversify stamina based combat that is very slow and back and forth oriented as 99% of the time endgame will be the SAME playstyle but with more damage. I would have much preferred them take inspiration from the Nioh games (or other Team Ninja games) rather then FromSoft, to see what a Diablo-like ARPG would be like if you actually had skill based, yet complex combat systems, and at the same time STILL have that power fantasy and excellent build diversity. This is why many Team Ninja games are in a league of their own because they are the only AAA ARPGs that have skill based combat, complex combat, deep gear/itemization systems, deep build systems, and deep endgame systems to keep players grinding, no other game has come close to combining these genres as good as Team Ninja. The devs made a great looking game and a well animated game, but nothing about this gameplay really sticks out as "genre defining" as the devs tried to sell their game as. I feel they got a little too big headed with their past successful games and thought they could just bust in an already competitive market and run over the competition, sorry but its never that easy.

    The performance complaints are surprising to me. I don’t have the highest end PC (3070 + i7 10700) and I don’t have any problems running the game on high quality settings at 1440. Also never had my tools break, especially once I got the repair rune so I could repair on fly out in the world. At level 14 currently and the inventory stuff hasnt bothered me too terribly, but I definitely look forward to some improvements there. I also have like 20 hours clocked and I only did the first two bosses. That’s not because I had trouble-killed the first boss in three tries and the second boss on the first try-but I did a lot of exploring, farming, upgrading and enchanting and just generally taking my time and enjoying everything. So people are going to have different paces and anyone watching this shouldn’t necessarily expect to finish 100% of the content in 13 hours. But knowing that what we have so far is only chapter 1 makes me excited for more.

    I'm about 20 hours in at this point and I have much the same experience with the inventory management. I have no issue with the difficulty curve or any of that except some attacks being weirdly telegraphed on some enemies. The big issue is the sheer amount of items you pick up. This gets further exacerbated as you close in on lvl20 as additional tiers of items start showing up for your higher-level crafting. Say I go out exploring, I will pick up all my T1 and T2 crafting materials but I will also find an occasional rare T3 item. Any reasonable player would pick those up as it means you can progress your character to the next level. Right now in the game though, it just adds further frustration since it is more items you have to micro-manage. Herbs need to stack higher and/or have a separate space. Items need more hidden tags so they sort properly rather than just by rarity (sort all Wood, Herbs, etc. to sort next to eachother). It is early access so there are bound to be changes happening quite quickly.

    Rolling toward enemies and specificaly in the direction the attack starts from is to go under the attack and out of the sweep or cone of their assult. Movements for footwork and how irl parrying of weapons is the same principle. It puts you into an adventageous position vs trying to stay out of their range or being tracked

  • @phrozac
    @phrozac25 күн бұрын

    Rolling toward them works because it gets you inside their attack arc. I played over 150 hrs and beat everything in the game as well as the Crucible dozens of times. Repairing is only a problem early on. You eventually amass so much repair powder that you'll never worry about tools breaking again. But also, your tools will eventually become durable enough to outlast the time it takes to fill up your inventory, so you'll be able to head back to town to repair, thus eliminating the need for repair power altogether. I'm not sure how I feel about durability. If it was gone, I wouldn't miss it, but it's also cool to give you something to worry about that makes you make choices. It all depends how they balance it I guess.

  • @quintonhoffert6526
    @quintonhoffert6526Ай бұрын

    Someone else has probably explained it already, but rolling towards enemies works because rolling gives you i-frames. i-frames means that you are invincible for a portion of the animation, usually the part where you're at the start of movement. Because you have i-frames during the early part of your roll, you should roll towards oncoming enemy attacks because they will move towards you and you will move towards it and you'll pass through the attacks quickly. If you roll in the same direction the attack is coming from (i.e. attack swings left to right and you roll right) then you're wasting your i-frames and the attack will hit you during the roll's recovery animation. If you roll backwards then you still might get out of the attack's range, or the i-frames might save you, but then you're wasting the repositioning benefit of the roll. Rolling through an attack lets you reposition behind or to the side of the enemy, letting you counterattack. Rolling away from an enemy puts you out of their range, and if you're playing a melee build with few or no ranged options that means you have no way to deal damage and you have to walk back into the danger zone before you can begin an attack animation and deal damage. Being to the side or behind an enemy lets you immediately queue up an attack while the enemy is in its attack animation's recovery animation, and when they're turning to attack you again your attack (or string if you have a fast weapon that can attack multiple times) should be finished and you should be able to dodge roll again. Rolling away is really only good in a few circumstances. Firstly, if you're a mage or another primarily ranged build, putting distance between enemies and yourself can be better than being behind or to the side of enemies. This isn't always the case, since some enemies have jump attacks or ranged capabilities themselves, but it is contextually good. Secondly, some enemies have AoE attacks that can hit all around them (dragons in Dark Souls especially tend to be able to breathe fire to their sides and do tail swipes) and you need to dodge backwards because the fire breath's lingering hitbox will still hurt you even if you dodge the initial blast. Lastly, it can be important in cramped spaces. If you're close to a wall or if there are environmental hazards (spikes, falls, etc.) then it can be very important to pull enemies away from choke points and back into the open so that you don't get trapped by the environment. If you put yourself in a bad spot then it may be worth dodging away from an attack and pulling the enemy back into a relatively open field so that your movement is unrestricted for future attacks. Aside from these general situations, though, it is almost always best to roll through an enemy attack (possibly multiple times if the enemy has a combo string) and position yourself behind or to the side of the enemy so that you can counterattack during their attack's recovery animation.

    I pretty sure I hated my time in the game today. Giving you only a heavy weapon to start is atrocious. I was so bad with it I broke it in no time and discovered unarmed was way more effective. Lack of camera controls meant any dicking around I did was always risking a deadly fall and more gear deterioration which discouraged me from exploring much at all. I didn’t even get to town before turning it off. If they add camera rotation I’ll be back but I will never play it again if the camera stays fixed.

    It would be great to see in game progression mechanic to solve the stash/inventory issue. You can buy a house, there is a magic in the game, why not have some kind of eternal storage of certain type of items purchasable/buildable and/or accessible from anywhere or maybe just town. Obviously this is a vague suggestion of a direction only that is why I am not being specific on purpose. This is really well done in Enshrouded. You have limited stash/ inventory space. You craft bigger backpack for immediate inventory with time and for stash you eventually unlock magic boxes that allow you to access "stuff" from anywhere within your base for crafting. It feels great when you get to that point.

    Been playing it myself and totally agree with you 100%. Feel the same way myself. Only made it up to the Riven Twins boss so far though. But inventory and mining pick disappearing when it loses all durability drove me mad. That said, for those two things to be the only major complaints, and ones that can be pretty easily fixed, overall is still a big W for the game. Despite the issues, enjoying it quite a lot. Taking my time, taking it all in, enjoying it.

    The way this game starts off is incredible and is more souls-like with an open world like level, leveling up, exploration, and then souls-like combat culminating in a boss. I thought the game would keep going like this from one level to the next, but then it switches to a decidedly more ARPG, grindy, type game where you're doing shorter quests from a hub, farming, etc... from that point on. I kind of wish they just had traditional levels, as this would've felt more souls-like, but I know they were going for a more never-ending type of play loop.

    Honestly, many of those "inconveniences" feel like they're there to increase playtime. the LAST thing they want is to ask $40 and for ppl to finish it in 5hrs. or the durability system was handled by a single guy who just put in rough numbers and didn't even bother to check how many deaths would break your gear, or how fast a pickaxe breaks.

    I have a take away from this video, and that is that we need a name to refer to the Diablo-esque ARPGs as. Raxx in this video referred to these games as just "ARPG", though ARPGs are typically any RPG that uses Realtime Action Combat. This classification also includes Soul-like games (Dark Souls, Elden Ring, etc.) GGG or Blizzard should probably key the term referring to their genre of ARPG. The game being reviewed here is simply an "Isometric Souls-like" game.

    Yeah I'm saying the same thing in a lot of videos and comments. The language needs to change to temper expectations appropriately because people in certain game communities will conflate that genre term with a set of expectations they have out of games they are familiar with and enjoy. It's definitely affecting other genres too like 2d platformers and metroidvanias. People really out here saying click to move iso looter arpg is the only definition which just isn't true.

    I always call these games Diablo-likes. Joe Shely from D4 coined the term SARPGs (Systems Action RPGs) but I don't think it's as good a title as it could be. A lot of non-Diablo-like ARPGs place just as much importance on the outside-of-combat systems as Diablo-like ARPGs without being Diablo-like at all. For a very recent example, Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is extremely systems-focused (as you'd expect of a JRPG) and your character, weapons and materia choices can make or break your combat experience, but despite that nothing in that game is even slightly Diablo-like. FFVII:Rebirth absolutely, 100% qualifies as s Systems Action RPG, as do many other system-focused games that aren't Diablo-like in their gameplay, so I don't think it's a good distinction. At the end of the day, Diablo-like is the best descriptor I can find for these types of ARPGs.

    The most thorough lol. I may not have any interest in D4 anymore, but glad I'm still subbed. You should try Dark Souls 3/Elden Ring. They should just open up the slots. If they want to be a souls game, no point in hiding the slots. Forcing people to grind for tedium/convenience is terrible game play. Also, crafting in souls games is ignore-able/non-existent, it was only in Elden Ring and you could skip it entirely without worry.

    I would enjoy watching you play Elden Ring, and Bloodborne if you have a PS4 or PS5. If Elden Ring is more akin to Dark Souls, Bloodborne goes the other way: you have to be constantly aggressive, time correctly your invincibility frame dodges and parry with the gun whenever the enemy type permits it... It's a very well thought out and balanced game, quite a unique experience to have, one of the best ever made. Would be very interested to see you take either of those games on and hear your thoughts on them and on the best builds to use. Cheers!

    I use medium armor, but sometimes I can't roll. I press the space bar, and the character slightly nods the head forward, that's it. If I press the space bar twice quickly, then it rolls twice, and then randomly when I press the space bar only once, sometimes it rolls, and sometimes it just nods. Why is this happening?

  • @GachaGoldark

    The concept of diving towards enemies is to use your invulnerable frames (during dash) to quickly go through the enemy's attack and quickly end up dishing out some damage during that prime time. Just imagine enemies attacks as waves that can hit you at any point, so going into them has you exposed the least amount of time. NRFTW feels pretty good, even with those issues. However, I don't quite understand the target audience for this game. Dark Souls combat filters out a bunch of people who would be interested in mint picking... I mean herb farming! Personally I can enjoy both, but it seems the game took things that Dark Souls / Elden Ring had already solved and reintroduced them so they can be solved by new systems like gathering, durability, consumables for healing etc.

    It is an isometric souls like boss fighting along the way rpg. The whole game runs on rails from A to Z with distractions along the the way, they will put mounts in it next, I think it has to decide what it wants to be and not be a mash up of most if not all rpgs aspects out there.

    Most people mistake "souls like game" with games with ZERO QoL. It seems that Moon Studios also thinks like that. Souls is about difficult combat and overcomming stuff based on your perception (not raw stats), it's not about inconvenient shit just because "yes fuck you". But man, I really wanted a good archery or sorcery combat, not limited to focus. There needs to be a faster fast travel system. When I unlocked it and noticed that I could only go back to the last fast travel I visited on each reagion... URGH!
