Elden Ring is One of the Best Video Games Ever Made

Ойындар

I'm Raxxanterax and I make Build Guides, Leveling Guides, Tier Lists and More for Diablo 4, Last Epoch, Path of Exile and Path of Exile 2. Elden Ring is one of the best games of the decade if not all time. After playing an absurd amount of hours the last several days I wanted to put together some of my thoughts on the game as I start to really dive into the endgame this week.

    @@jaydeus for me that's exactly the issue. The world in elden ring is huge yes, but even Dark Souls 1 feels just as vast and big, but with a lot more memorable places. For me running around a lot and exploring doesn't make games feel big, often it's just boring and creates a lot of issues with balancing (my biggest problem with elden ring). I will absolutely recommend elden ring and I can see how it has the best mass appeal, because it has an actual easy mode (summons), but it's still at the bottom of my list. My favorites are Sekiro and Dark Souls 1.

    As a 40-year old gamer Elden Ring was the first souls-like i played, and i truly fell in love with it. I get that the summons are looked down upon, but for me they were the savior. That combined with the fact that when you get stuck, you can turn back and level up and then come back. I think that was the lesson the first boss taught me, i ran smack into Margit and thought "this game is just to hard" (first souls like). But then i went and did other stuff in the game for 15 hours, before i came back with a vengeance. And that feeling of coming back and winning will stay with me forever. If you are intimidated by the difficulty and the reputation, dont be! The game can somewhat be how difficult you want it to be.

    summons are only really frowned upon by people who are projecting their own lack of skill onto others. Anyone genuinely good at these games who does challenge runs does not care how you play or if you summon, they might even encourage it until you learn the game better. It's always the people who suck at these games who make a big deal out of it

    I have ungodly hours in souls games, did everything in them there is, including every challenge run I could think of. Even after going through ER without leveling, with no weapon upgrades, shields only, bows only etc, I still find spirit summons fun. And they are in the game because of that. They are fun and optional. Honestly, people that gatekeep them should leave the souls community.

    You have a black mage avatar, so I will assume you are a person of culture. Run around, explore, level up and mage builds start decimating things. There is one specific weapon + spell combo that you can find ~10 min into the game (following a guide) that can deal with almost everything in the game. There is room for finding different spells that will humiliate bosses when you are high level. If you use everything the game offers instead of self-imposed restrictions AND you like casting spells and farming XP, Elden Ring is easy. There was one single optional boss I had to respec to cheese.

    I couldn't play it more than an hour, it bores the hell out of me. I hear people who say it's the best game ever, etc, but it just doesn't grab me, neither gameplay-wise nor story-wise. I feel like I had to post this because the comment section is overwhelmingly positive here and at least one voice should express that it's definitely not for everyone. I love A-RPGs like Diablo, pure RPGs like Baldur's Gate 3, J-RPGs like Final Fantasy 6/7/8/9/10 or Suikoden 1/2/3, Tactical RPGs like FFT and some other Action-RPGs like the Seiken Densetsu series, etc but I really can't with FromSoft games and I tried many many times because of how they're rated. I wish I could get into them to get onto the hype but I really can't 🤷‍♂Sure, I only played the beginning of each Souls but I feel like they lack depth somehow, at least at the start, and I don't want to have to bore myself to death for hours before the games get interesting. And wtf with that music that makes you sleepy. This video and Raxx's gameplay made me try again but after playing some more... ...naaahhh.

    Hello! I just started playing Elden Ring myself and I learned a few tips regarding the UI: When you loot an item for the first time (so every time you loot anything unique) there is a little icon in the corner of the banner telling you into what category the item belongs (equipment/consumables etc.) Also when in the inventory, you can use LS/L3/press L stick to change the order in which the items are shown, so you can sort them by time of looting and find the newest items at the end. Hope that helps :)

    I played 1 chatacter at my own pace and only explored content that felt engaging. It took me 180 hours and I never felt bored. You can beat Elden Ring in a few hours if you really want to, or you could spent weeks rising around on your elk. One thing that I don't see enough praise for compared to Dark Souls is that the open world design meant if I was stuck on a boss and frustrated, I could leave the area and go do some other content for a while. There were so many times where I got up to a major boss that I was struggling against and I just left and fought some mini bosses in gaols instead. Elden Ring might not be the best game ever made, but I cannot name a better game, so it might as well be.

    RDR2 is a pretty close contender for me, but you have to play it on PC to get that 60fps 4K quality, which elevates it to a GOAT contender. TLOU series remastered for next-gen are also close. TLOU feels like art because of the atmosphere and storyline, whereas Elden Ring feels like art because of world design, gameplay and atmosphere.

    good on you man, i absolutely love these games, i've been playing since ds2 came out and i've been in love since. The best way to describe these games is they are just a video game in its rawest form, you play for fun , for challenge, for exploration, there are no skins, no starter packs, no subscription. This is what happens when a triple A studio follows in the steps of indie gaming and has one simple goal, to let you have fun with the work that they love.

    A tip from a souls veteran. For a bit of context, I play souls kbm only (except bloodborn), because I don't have a functional left thumb and I really wrestled with controls and camera for a long time learning to play dark souls 1 and 3. Here's the tip: The aim lock has specific functions, with pros and cons so learn them. Pros: - it orients you towards an enemy - it is used to aim attacks (specially ranged) - great to pin point enemies (specially when you can't quite see well) But it has cons: - it positions you to receive enemy attacks (it is the bad side of the first pro function) - It makes it harder to understand the whole depth of enemy attacks, specialy giant bosses - limits your mobility, a consequence of the first point. Learn to use the aim lock as a tool instead of making it the rule, turning it on and off according to necessity. Fight while controling the camera without locking it. Use it when it's advantageous to aim on enemies and attack them. Melee is kinda easy to hit without locking the camera for the most part, and against some enemies is easier than locked. Now you can focus on positioning and finding the weak spots of enemies and their attacks, focus on your spatial awareness. EDIT: About quests... they are at the same time puzzles and chance encounters. They are what make playthroughs, each journey unique. If you play it blind, you gonna experience it like Miyazaki envisioned, mysterious and fairy tale like. If you want to follow them somewhat, pay attention to dialogues, item descriptions and eviromental storytelling. :D

  • @Fionnarix

    @Fionnarix

    A very important point on the lock-on, not only for KBM. It's a tool, but too many people use it as a crutch, while it may be harder in the beginning to play without lock-on, once you learn how to do it and only use lock on when needed for orientation etc it is just superior. One of the reasons DS2 has a bad reputation, that game is meant to be played without lock-on, and instead of learning the lesson people just screamed shit game after they saw their character hitting into the direction where they were rolling instead of doing an autoturn to the locked on target (you learn to aim without the lock-on instead of relying on the lock-on, DS2 taught me that).

    Questing and UI was the big point of contention when it first came out. It was the knock from Ubisoft Devs that caused a big stir because it doesn’t follow the formula’s of today’s RPG’s. So when you said you wouldn’t have solutions so you don’t want to be to harsh on it. The answer seems to be go back to formulaic rpgs. Which would weirdly make it worse so being a negative to the game is actually an improvement against the industry standard oddly.

    It was strange to me at first, but my perspective changed because the NPCs mimic how IRL people behave. The people we interact with in this game called life move on and act on their motivations and ambitions with or without you. This was refreshing because most video games NPCs don’t act like people.

    Two tips regarding locating specific items in your inventory: 1) You can sort items in different ways ('sort by'), for example by type, weight, damage, most recently discovered, etc. 2) You can put items into your chest. I recommend doing that for some/many of the items that you're not actively using at least once every few hours. Keeps your inventory clean. The downside is you might forget that you have certain items in your chest, but that won't generally be a problem because anyone can beat this game without a perfect build. Oh and also: every item you pick up has an icon. This icon tells you in which inventory tab it'll be located.

    To anyone who is intimidated by Souls games, Elden Ring is probably the most accessible. It has tools to make fights near trivial. There's a summon system that allows you to summon NPCs that help you in the fight, you can level them up and around early mid-game you get a summon that is one of the best ones in the game. The open world nature of the game allows you to overlevel almost any fight to make it easier. Essentially the difficulty slider is just the gameplay mechanics and how you choose to use them. I recently did 2 playthroughs, having not really played any previous souls games and it was a blast.

Made it till new game+ 5 and still was having a blast even on the higher difficulty it is. I just stopped because of real life stuff but always planned to return to it. Then the DLC was announced and I'm just waiting for that, I hope it will bring me more good stuff of this lovely game. I'm 52 and have been playing games since the end of the 70's, this game is truly my number one game now. Camera boss does not exist for Keyboard + Mouse users. When the game released i finished the game with mouse + keyboard without locking into single enemy, mouse is so superior for camera control you dont even need a target lock, you just turn your mouse fast into enemy yourself , it is so comfortable. You are PC gamer, you played so many years on your PC, at this point in time you are godlike with your mouse control. I would suggest change into keyboard + mouse. At first you will feel some discomfort until you get used to keybinds(you can change binds to your liking btw) but after that you wil feel more superior while playing the game because of mouse camera control. On controller you can not jump or dodge at while controlling your camera because you have to use same right thumb finger for both. Thats why target lock exist in these games so game do the camera turn for you while you have to dodge, jump etc. But with mouse+keyboard everything is possible , you can do everything while controlling camera with mouse independently.

    Does not exist on controller either if you don't lock on. Realized this halfway through ER, played DS1-3 after that without locking on, after doing both locking on feels like a crutch, better if you don't learn how to control your character (where he is facing etc), worse if you have a good control over your character. This is the most evident in DS2, where after you roll and attack your character will not turn back to face the enemy with the lock on before attack, still would attack into the direction you rolled (much more aligned to real physics, I know there are arguments that video games should not mimic real physics but I prefer it to align, as it gives enhanced immersion). Tons of people hated this in DS2 but I loved it as it made everything you do more intentional and you couldn't just rely on lock on to do the targeting for you, you had to plan which direction you roll to have your attack land afterwards.

  • @Fionnarix

    @Fionnarix

    Also you can dodge + control the camera at the same time, since you've got four fingers and a thumb, and you only need two for that, I routinely use 3 fingers with a clawgrip most souls games. This sort of tells me you are just unfamiliar with controllers - you do you, this is not a slight, if you enjoy KBM just do continue but trust me the only thing you need KBM for is frame-perfect warps for speedruns (when you need to hit an action at a certain frame to get a glitch, i.e. teleporting from the first outside bonfire to the middle of Lurnia), and those won't be needed unless you are trying to beat the game in under 10 minutes.

    Honestly, I’m just stoked that you got to experience it. I’ve been a fan of both Dark Souls AND ARPGs for a while, so seeing you, the ARPG master, pick this game up was EXTREMELY exciting to me. I love the FromSoft games, and I had a feeling you would LOVE Elden Ring just based on your personality and how you like to play games. I think i easily put in over a hundred hours into the base game because it’s honestly extremely replayable if you go in with a different mindset. First time I played? Do whatever it takes to win with whatever playstyle I think is most fun. I love curved Greatsword style weapons, so I went with that. Same weapon as you for the entire game just because I liked how it looked, I liked the bleed, I enjoyed the weight of the weapon. Used the ghost summons and everything. Play though 2? What if I role played as an assassin. Daggers only, no summons, try to stealth as much as possible and avoid conflict where I can. Completely different feeling.

    Happy to see you enjoyed it, I\ve been a Souls Fan since i started playing DS3 i played em all and finished them, ER i finished 12 times, all with different builds and up to NG *New Game Plus 7) Truly a amazing game that you can't have enough of, and soon the Expansions is coming, so you came at the right time. Keep enjoying

    If you dismount from your steed you get more invulnerability frames than a roll, if you’re about to get hit on Torrent just dismount and the attack won’t even touch you. There are a ton of mechanics like this in the souls game where you think something is BS until you figure out that they almost always have created some mechanic to mitigate or negate it entirely.

    He just wrapped up talking about how he ran into things that just told him play better but then complained about this. As if the game doesn't give you items to restore Torrent's HP bar while you're riding. If you ignore his HP entirely and pretend your moose is invulnerable you deserve to get stunned on the ground when it dies, yes. All you have to do is dismount to avoid it.

    Love it! I've played Wow, LOTR, and Everquest from the beginning but as soon as I started playing this I was hooked, I recommend it to everyone I've played with over the years and they all fall in love with it too. I can't wait for the DLC in June! I watched your 1st day playing and was well impressed with what you did.

    You have done well Rax. Sad you won't be streaming this no more, but I hope you will enjoy the game even more than what you have experience so far. By the way, regarding the long recovery from stagger and knockdowns, you can raise your poise stat from armors and consumables to improve that.

    Best timing for the Starforge logo to appear while taking about the Asus Sponsorship :)) Nevertheless, glad you finally played it and liked it! It is a masterpiece! Keep it up :D

    Awesome man! I love when people try these games for the first time and feel the same way I feel about them, in a huge Diablo fan and this is just another alternative to that specific style of the road from weak to powerful.

    Hey raxx. Just a tip for if you are unsure if a drop will kill you. When you get to a ledge drop a rainbow stone off the edge. If the stone breaks it means you will die if you drop off. If the stone survives it means you will survive
