Came to the comments for this. I was very confused. Leading guess, on reflection, is that he's not used to it being legal for the king to stay in danger, and so his next move was going to be the same no matter what his opponent did, and he just took the queen on autopilot. I'm actually more surprised he didn't catch it himself a second after making the move. Edit: Looks like he did see it when he reviewed the game... unless chat told him?

Haha it looks like it. I'm not great at chess but I saw that instantly. The king moving there just looked so weird it jumped out at me - I was like "wait, it's still a fork!"

I think duck chess might be better with a slightly longer time control. We missed out on some of those long, funny "can't quite capture!" duckmates.

I've never seen this variation until just now. Obviously I'm a little late to the party. As a total beginner, watching these games, and imagining what I would do on each move, I keep wanting to capture that darn duck... it looks like a piece that one should be able to capture. If the duck were represented as... oh, say a brick or a fence, or even as an X, it might help me to remember that duck is not another piece... it's nothing but a blocker. However, I suspect it should just take a few games to get used to it. Interesting variation. As always, thanks for taking the time to post these videos.

Quacktics are always EXTREMELY fun to watch. The more duck chess, the better.

I wonder how duck chess would be affected if after a player castles or moves a pawn two squares, the opponent would be allowed to retroactively change that to a single-square move by capturing the square that the pawn or king passed over (if the duck had been there, the duck would instead be placed where the piece would go if it had moved two squares).

I hate the fact you can hang your king in DuckChess. It should be that if it's your turn and there is no legal move to avoid getting your king captured by your opponent in the next move, then it's DuckMate
