The thing I love most about this is the addition of Take 6. Because when it’s just him and his voice is layered, he literally sounds like all six of them all at the same time. Jacob is a whole other kind of beast. He’s not human. Something like a genius. You must do his version of “Moon River” if you haven’t heard it already. It’s stunning.

I'm very glad you heard this. This is a favourite of his arrangements. Jacob Collier has a wide vocal range. His best instruments are his voice and piano or keyboards, his bass and percussion are funky. This won a Grammy in 2020. Jacob has a YT video about making this. ① He's had 9 Grammy nominations, and has won 5 Grammys. His management, is QuincyJones the same as Dirty Loops. He won a Grammy in 2017 for _You And I (Audio) - Jacob Collier_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/n6mr2tNwYJSympc.html his a cappella arrangement of Stevie Wonder's 1972 "You and I (We Can Conquer the World)" Maybe you know the Flintstones theme? (You look too young, but maybe they are still playing reruns and your kids watch?). The opening sequence is Jacob Collier, his Mum, then two sisters (which makes me remarkably happy 😂), then almost 150 musician friends. You might recognise some. The main part is only Jacob singing. Again he made a YT video explaining how he made it. He won a Grammy in 2021 for _Jacob Collier - He Won't Hold You (feat. Rapsody)_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/gaJ1l9KoY6S5qaw.html Rapsody is superb. Jacob is widely praised as a musical genius partly because of his understanding of harmony. He has exceptional 'perfect pitch'. He can reliably recognise 20 notes between each note on a piano, _and_ sing it, or find that sound (when he's healthy). ② I wrote above _"He doesn't processes his voice on songs"_ That is _except_ for lowering his voice an octave. He records his voice than plays back at half speed to get an octave lower. He still has to sing the correct notes, at an octave higher than he needs. ------------ Footnotes ----- ① His 1hr 48m YT video is quite long, so maybe this summary might help: Jacob recorded the pieces of video at different times and places then edited the video himself except for the orchestra (AFAIK, there were several cameras). He wrote the musical arrangement for each orchestral instrument on a MIDI keyboard and computer in about 6 hours (before a morning flight to the recording studio). The other vocalists parts were added later. Months later, he played the music (on piano or keyboard) to "THE AEOLIANS OF OAKWOOD UNIVERSITY:" choir and they sang it back in 9 (?) part Harmony. The 6 guys singing throughout are Take-6 a legendary a cappella group. I don't remember how he communicated the music to them. Maybe they did it themselves from his lead? They are ridiculously talented and experienced. All Night Long MV Credits: Arranged, orchestrated, recorded, mixed, produced by Jacob in Logic Pro X. Additional orchestration: Vladimir Nikolov Video edited by Jacob in Adobe Premiere Pro.

@@lifewithsuzzyq2039 Thank You for your kind compliment. When I know something that might help a channel I like, I try to comment. I'm not sure the details in my comment you _"really need to know"._ 😀 However, they might help you by saving you some time if you decide to react or listen more. I sometimes comment about kids if channels mention them. A friend, and old boss has two, and they struggled during lockdown. They're doing well now. But I think it was nice to know other people were thinking about them too. Best Wishes. ☮ PS - The rest is very long. Leave it to a rainy day, if you ever get any time 😄 ____________________________ I hope this might be helpful sometime ___________________________ --------- More about Jacob Collier, his family, musical history, early videos and Quincy Jones -------- Jacob Collier is British, born and raised in London. He and his two sisters were raised by their Mum, Suzie Collier. (I don't know what happened to their father.) Suzie Collier is a concert violinist, conductor and music teacher. She pops up in the video at 6:56 for a second. Instead of making Jacob learn music, she had instruments in their home and encouraged him to experiment and play if he wanted to. She didn't try to teach him the names of musical notes, but did ask him how each note made him feel. Jacob has said that 'feeling' was very important to him, and how he learned music. They play music (jazz 'standards') together (Jacob pre-recorded double bass and drums): _When You Wish Upon A Star - Suzie & Jacob Collier_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/naV11JetY8S7irg.html (10 years ago) _Here's That Rainy Day - Suzie & Jacob Collier_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/rIyto9OmpbLMgtY.html (9 years ago) Jacob doesn't play the violin 😄 though his sisters do. Jacob taught himself to play each instrument, starting with singing, then the piano. Jacob says he experimented for hours each day, for years, listening to different combinations of piano notes. I imagine, because he has such good perfect pitch, and musical memory, it all somehow made sense to him. ----- Jacob's KZread performances ------ He got a microphone and camera, and started making multi-track videos of himself singing a cappella or with a melodica ①, and releasing them on KZread. An early video was: _Isn't She Lovely - Jacob Collier_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/laioqMOnhpPVZ8Y.html [Feb 2012] about 17yo ① The small keyboard instrument is a melodica. AFAIK, it's the cheapest 'polyphonic' (multiple simultaneous notes) instrument that can be used to play chords. When I was a kid at school, many decades ago, it was used to teach children with musical talent about music. It is blown, so there's some volume control. There are no batteries or power, making it easily portable, and no 'set up' in a classroom or music room. I'd see kids practicing together at the bus stop as I walked home. ----------- Quincy Jones, and Dirty Loops -------- Quincy Jones learned about Collier from his KZread channel and "Don't You Worry 'bout a Thing". Wikipedia: _"His activity caught the attention of Quincy Jones, who flew Collier to the Montreux Jazz Festival where they met with Herbie Hancock"_ (Herbie Hancock is a musical 'legend' with 14 Grammy's) Quincy Jones asked him to join his company. Jacob initially asked him to be his mentor instead. Quincy is Jacob's manager. Quincy Jones is in the _All Night Long_ video holding up cards with the chords at 3:40 bottom left. Quincy Jones has a looooong Wikipedia page. He wrote and arranged a lot of music. I remember when I was a kid, watching TV with my Mum, he was highlighted on the credits for writing the theme music to US TV series 'Ironside', and, 'Banacek'. He wrote a _lot_ of film scores too. Maybe most famously _"Jones produced three of popstar Michael Jackson's most successful albums: Off the Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), and Bad (1987)."_ (Wikipedia) Quincy Jones has won 28 Grammys. So he's an ideal mentor for Jacob Collier (and Dirty Loops). Jonah Nilsson (of Dirty Loops) has played with Jacob and his band: ② _Jacob Collier feat. Jonah Nilsson - Do I Do (Live) | Montreux Jazz Festival 2017_ kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWaqsdexZZSTn5c.html Jacob is playing a weird sounding keyboard. It is a custom built keyboard, the Harmonizer, created by a collaboration with Ben Bloomberg, then a PhD student at the MIT Media Lab. They created it for Collier to play chords live using his voice. He uses it in that video ② People say the main problem with the Harmonizer is the player needs to be able to hit exactly the right note immediately, every time, or it sounds bad.

I've been off the computer for a couple of days and was just thrilled when I saw that you had reacted to "All Night Long." I was pretty confident that you would appreciate it and your wonderful reaction proves that. Such a treat. When you're enjoying the music you just exhude the pleasure of the experience. It's really nice when someone is able to share in that way. A real treat. Jacob does play a ton of instruments. I believe his favorite is his voice followed probably by the piano and/or bass. Jacob did all the arrangements for this (including the orchestral) and edited and produced the video. Take6 are a very important influence on Jacob and they are now friends and have collaborated on several projects together. Jacob is currently on a world tour with his new band but his fans are expectantly waiting for his forth album in his colossal "Djesse" series. Thank you again for this delightful reaction.
