My Portuguese friend showed me this trick!🔥 She cooks like this several times a week🤤

Recipe for 3 servings:
1 onion, cut into small pieces
Heat the oil in a pan and briefly sauté the onions
2 garlic cloves, roughly chop and add
Add 1 can of chopped tomatoes and 200 ml of water to the pan
cumin, salt, pepper
Add 100ml white wine (or vegetable stock) and bring to the boil
Add 250g rice (9oz) uncooked to the pan
Add 1 can of tuna
Mix everything together, cover and simmer for 20 minutes
(Depending on the type of rice, add more water if necessary)
Approx. 150g peas (5oz) (if you don't like peas, you can use other vegetables, e.g. peppers, broccoli, zucchini, corn, etc.)
Add the peas to the pan and cook for another 5-10 minutes until the rice is done
Finally parmesan or feta on top (optional)
Enjoy your meal!

    Ein tolles Rezept, das probiere ich auf jeden Fall, danke! 😍 Aber noch ein wichtiger Tipp von mir zum Würzen: Pfeffer muss man wirklich immer frisch mahlen, das ist ein völlig anderer, viel aromatischerer Geschmack! Außerdem: schwarzer Pfeffer ist fast immer gut, weißer Pfeffer kann das ganze Essen verderben, weil er gerne mal muffig schmeckt; daher den immer vorher prüfen! Wenn man Muskatnuss nimmt: auch bitte immer frisch reiben, der Geschmack ist soviel besser als aus der Streudose! Und falls man Streudosen verwendet: Bitte keine Dosen mit Gewürzen über einen heißen, dampfenden Topf halten; die Feuchtigkeit lässt die Gewürze verklumpen und wenn man Pech hat, bildet sich sogar Schimmel in der Dose! Gewürze aus Dosen auf kleine Teller oder Esslöffel streuen und sie dann damit ans Essen geben; so bleibt der Doseninhalt trocken! Guten Appetit! 😋

    I am Portuguese,I grown up with this, we call it tomato rice and goes very well with fried fish too ,sometimes I put peas others peppers, the cheese yes tho it goes well we Portuguese don’t put it , but sprinkled with parsley and a squeeze of lemon juice

    My Parents Portuguese from ACORES ISLANDS. I Still enjoy Tuna Salad with Chick Peas Parcely, onion, Portuguese Olive oil or Italian Olive Oil, and Boiled Egg and olives just like how we so the Bachula COD Salad.👍🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹🍷🍷

    Some 20 years ago I was a long distance lorry driver and bought my food (ingredients)for 3-4 weeks in advance... on the last days I've cooked from ingredients I have left and... found rice and canned tuna on my plate lol (And am not even Portuguese☺️) good ol' days...

    good recipe. I'd add the already cooked tuna at the very end to warm it up. just not sure why you would want to cook the tuna for another 20 mins. it's already overcooked in the can.

    Same for garlic - just add another clove at the very end, so it would get in between of raw and cooked. This will be of different taste, than first you added. BTW, I do not cut onion so fine, that is not at all needed. Slice onion to half, then give each another cut, parallel to the earlier, lay down and slice with 5-6 cuts. Layers of onion will separate in pan, chunks will shrink and likely melt with this long cooking.

    The extra time would be for the uncooked rice to cook, otherwise it would be a bit crunchy and to give the flavours time to infuse into the tuna.

    Interesting. Im a Portuguese Canadian and grew up eating this. My father loved it. But instead of tuna we would fry up fish and eat it with the tomato and pea rice.

    I don’t how KZread knew but I made Portuguese rice for tea tonight (but with pork, prawns and cod) and then it recommended this. Love to have it with monkfish and prawns (tamboril e camarão) when I’m out in Portugal. Underrated cuisine is Portuguese food.

    Thank you. Short and tasty. Lovely for a mid week meal at the end of a long day 😌 Do you use prewashed rice? If not you might want to look up the issue of heavy pesticide contamination with most rice on the market. I rince mine up to 15 times depending on the rice until the water is clear.

    Tip please wash rice first, get rid of the impurities Can use fresh diced tomatoes with teaspoon of tomato paste for same effect, use veggie stock to make up volume of fluids

    I will definitely try this recipe! I make tuna casserole regularly. I never thought to switch out noodles for rice or to add a can of tomatoes. I like the addition of white wine too. This recipe is a lot healthier than mine as it does not have any cheese in it.

    dont fry the garlic so so long, garlic needs 20-max30 sec. TOP when added this way in the pan, then it changes the taste and flavor. Just cook the onion enough and add the garlic 20-30s before the tomato sauce

    I am Canadian with no Portuguese background. This exact recipe has been my go-to recipe many times. I laugh as my family on both sides came to Canada in the early 1800s. It just shows here in Canada we all integrate recipes from other nationalities.

    i cook this also, however i prefer to have the rice cooked extra, much faster and easier, i also use lots of onions with the sauce, then i serve the rice with butter on top and chopped dill, and then the sauce on top of it :) this way the sauce can cook properly long which is allways necessary when using tomatopaste, if using enough oil and also sharp habanero chilli it forms this wonderfull "red oil" on top and then the dry rice can wonderfully soak it up, spoon by spoon. if you put the rice uncooked inside it becomes mushy and its much harder to get it soft...its much easier to cook the rice extra...that way you can also know the exact amount of water which is allways 1 portion of rice:2 portions of water.

    Der Trick mit der Dose, in die man nochmal Wasser rein macht, den benutze ich schon eeewig. 😁 Sogar für Rotkraut, um jedes Fitzelchen aus dem Glas zu bekommen. Dein Rezept sieht echt lecker aus. Fisch, Reis, Tomate, Gemüse - da kann man nix mit falsch machen. 👍 Ich würde sogar mal Brokkoli damit versuchen, da mein Mann kein großer Erbsen-Fan ist. Oder sogar Pilze. Oder beides gleichzeitig. 😂 Wünsch dir schonmal schöne Festtage aus der Pfalz! 😘

    The trick* with the can, in which you put water in again, I've been using forever. 😁 Even for red cabbage to get every scrap out of the jar. Your recipe looks really tasty. Fish, rice, tomato, vegetables - you can't go wrong with anything. 👍 I would even try broccoli with it because my husband is not a big fan of peas. Or even mushrooms. Or both at the same time. 😂 Wishing you happy holidays from the Palatinate! 😘 clump together and if you're unlucky, even mold forms in the can! Sprinkle canned spices onto small plates or tablespoons and then add them to the food; this keeps the contents of the can dry! Enjoy your meal! *The word Trick: was it borrowed from English or vice-versa.

    Есть очень вкусный рецепт "Макароны по флотски". Можно использовать вместо риса - макароны, к луку добавить тёртую морковь, а вместо тунца, говяжий фарш. Попробуйте, не пожалеете! Это очень вкусно 👍👍👍🌈

    Дело в том, что в Португалии на ровне с мясом и рыбой , очень любят использовать консервы тунца(я лично там научилась пользоваться консервами тунца-"атун") Даже московский салат, который называется "салада русса"(русский салат), они делают с консервами тунца.

    У этого блюда есть веган вариант, без тунца, но с баклажаном,🍆 вкусно. Я стараюсь есть в основном веганские блюда. Ещё рис хорошо с чечевицей

    Yes I love a pan meal of rice done like this with lentils.. but I end up putting a ton of vegetables in along with the onions and garlic.. whatever I have.. spinach, mushrooms, sugar snap peas, celery, carrots.... I end up with one big pan of base food which I can then add any meat or fish or beans to some of it and eat for several days or freeze some for later.

    What you started with (olive oil, garlic, onion, tomatoes, salt) is also the FOUNDATION of almost every Italian "sugo". Once the "sugo" is done, we may add tuna, green olives, black olives, capers, many of us chili peppers as well, little more cooking and then spaghetti (already cooked separately)! Buon appetito! PS Very important: NO Parmigiano, NO CHEESE at all, we in Italy usually DO NOT add cheese to first dishes (pasta or rice) with fish.

    @@attilabori4734 Both tradition and taste. Tradition is tradition. About taste, we usually think that the "average" fish has delicate taste while the "average" cheese has strong taste which is going to "kill" the more delicate taste of the fish. Ciao! ;-)

    @@mellilore i agree with you, you are rigth, but there is an exception, tuna is the meat of the sea, so you can use cheese… has an intense flavor 🙂

    @@manuelvilhena6276 Claramente cada um pode fazer como ele gosta, LIBERTADE!!!! ;-) porèm eu mesmo faço só uma exceção: pasta aglio olio e peperoncino (pasta com alho, azeite e pimenta) con acciughe (anchovas) e pecorino (queijo de ovelha maturado). Ciao :-)

    I make this usually with noodles, with whatever I feel like, even spaghetti or ramen noodles are ok, but then the cooking time needs to be adjusted. For me it was always 'quick emergency food', when I don't feel like making something more time consuming. Will try with rice, had no idea this is a Portugese dish .

    Generally I like my rice less mushy and a bit more firm, but I suppose I can try cooking the rice and tuna/peas separately. Either way, I’m down to try it.

    Yeah, in southern Europe we don't usually wash rice before cooking it so starch blends the grains together with the sauce. I'm a Spaniard and personally like both ways of cooking it, but I've heard a couple times about not liking the mushy version in other countries

    You can try and do it like this but use the long type of rice (Agulha type in Portugal). Also don't overcook the rice, using the "perfect rice trick" to turn off and tap the pan as soon as you see the water boiling right above the rice level! Keep it 2/3 min tapped before serving.👍

    Hi! Du kannst das alles auch in einer Auflaufform vorbereitet bei 200° Umluft im Ofen garen, wir machen es ähnlich nur mit Schafskäse anstatt Tunfisch. Ich probiere aber auf jeden Fall deine Version aus… vielen Dank! ❤

    Sieht lecker aus, werde ich auch mal ausprobieren. Kann man den Reis auch separat in einem Reiskocher machen und dann zu der Soße geben??? Müßte auch klappen. Gruß Klaus aus PB

    Hallo Klaus, ja das sollte auf jeden Fall klappen😃! Der Trick hier ist natürlich, dass du den Reis in der Soße kochst. Aber ein Reiskocher ist natürlich auch eine feine Sache 😎. Wenn du den Reis separat kochst, solltest du weniger Wasser bzw. Flüssigkeit in die Soße geben ☺️. Lass es dir schmecken und viel Spaß beim Nachkochen 😋
