i like to do the thought experiment: What if cars had been electric for the last 100 years and all of a sudden some guy comes out with the internal combustion engine with its less torque, polluting, loud, 100s of moving parts to maintain, fluids to change, no energy recovery when braking...etc... You'd think the guy had lost his mind.

​@@rwhirsch this I so true! Electric cars are just better technology. The sad thing is that before the starter motor was invented almost half of all cars were electric , if only it would have swung the other way.

I am 79 and love my Tesla Y, had to talk my husband into buying it but now this is his all time favorite car, specially on long road trips. Let your dad drive the car for a couple of weeks. Tesla is an experience, none Tesla driver would not understand it because they have not experienced it. ‘We don’t know what we don’t know.’

The best solution is a Tesla that you charge from home and have access to the Supercharger network. I wouldn't bother with any other brand of EV.

You have a point but when I got the Kia e-Niro in 2019 the Model 3 was not an option as we needed a more practical car, it had to be hatchback or estate for us here in France. We did some long hauls across France, Switzerland and into the UK without any real trouble charging, although we did have a few sticky moments back in 2019/2020 but the charging network is so good now that I hardly bother planning the trip on the ChargeMap app. Being able to use Tesla chargers is a real bonus as they are so easy to use, always work and cheaper than the competition.

Almost all superchargers in mainland Western Europe are open to non Teslas. At the same time, it’s not in-common to see some Teslas charging at non Tesla rapid chargers that are bang in front of Tesla Superchargers. The reason is those are company lease cars that come with a charge card. And those cards do not work on the superchargers.

Great video. Your dad is hilarious. I think you should have emphasized to your dad that most people with EVs don't ever use those superchargers and they just charge at home, so people with petrol cars do in fact spend a lot more time at gas stations than EV owners do at charging stations because most of the time an EV will just plug in overnight. Yes, if you are on a long trip you will have to potentially fight over chargers, but generally on a day to day basis you will just charge at home and save yourself all those trips to the bloody gas station. That said your dad and my dad are similar - can't deny that Teslas are nice, but continuously claim they aren't for him. My dad was the same way with smart phones and eventually in 2017 I just went out and bought him an iPhone and he can't live without it now.

I understand the charging at home thing which can actually be quite convenient and I've often made this argument myself however, until they get charging down to 5 minutes I doubt I would be buying one. many others would not be convinced either. Lots of people live in cities and charging points are just simply unavailable and you cannot trail leads from your apartment on the 3rd floor across the pavement so it's charging stations or Nothing which makes it very unattractive.

I had this thought for the first time after watching this. And if I were concerned enough about fueling on long trips(which rarely happens in recent years), I could just rent a gas car for those.

Most people choose to plug in their phone and charge while they sleep. I don’t know many who choose to stand and watch their mobile phone charge during the day. Similarly it’s best to charge your ev overnight on off peak electricity. Most people drive an average of 18 miles a day in the uk…….

Not everyone has access to home chargers and those who drive more than 18 miles a day such as my Dad. But that is why EV's aren't for everyone at this current point in time, but they do suit a wide variety of people.

I this a the anti EV movement is mostly fueled by governments forcing them on people with cut off dates for ICE cars. Here in Australia cars were more fuel efficient 20y ago as most people drove smaller cars sedan, wagons, Utes, and things like UKs Ford Escort or smaller. But now everyone drives big V8 4x4 and American style pick-up trucks instead of sedan styles Uts like Ford Falcon & Holden Commodore

Somethings aren't worth fighting against worth funding like environmental destruction and poisoning of natural food supplies (sure people do protest, but gets ignored by MSM because their sponsored by the ones running the things they protests against) but they point at dumb shit like Co2 batteries make and oil produce being burnt. Wait - your dad in the UK needs to be able to drive 500 miles before filling up or charging? I just went to Google Earth and found that the UK is only 576 miles from the southern tip of the Isle of Wight to the tip of Cape Wrath in Scotland. Even in the US, most vehicles can't go much farther than 350 miles before a fill-up.

It's the stock answer to people that refuse to entertain the idea of an EV. My bladder would likely give out before an EV battery. And with the speed of the superchargers now, a wee and a quick stop in the shop will add plenty of range for another decent journey.

To be fair, he tried it, and wasn't rude about the car, a bit unfortunate that he had to wait for a charger, but he didn't seem to wait much monger than you would at a busy fuel station. I agree that it is horses for courses, if he is doing a lot of towing, currently, EVs are not so good, their consumption pretty much doubles, but his other gripe about liking to get on and range not being enough was demonstrated to be false as he was obviously hungry and eager to go in for a break and use the toilet, so even in his dino car, he would have had to stop at some point. Our bladder and belly have less range than most EVs today

That was fun. Thanks! Not sure about Europe but in the US, most people charge at night and only supercharge while on road trips. I used to wait at least 50x more time to fill up as I do waiting to charge so charging is actually a huge time saver, not a burden and many watching might assume. If you don't have access to power where you park, charging would be a disadvantage.

I am way younger than your dad, but if I drive 300 miles, I will need to stop to have something to eat, relax, and go to the restroom. Who drives 300 miles then put more gas in the car and keep on driving? Must be a Superman!😂

Road trip in a Tesla is the best experience ever, Tesla supercharger usually has coffee shops, shopping malls, restaurants etc, great place to take a break, have coffee or food and stretch your legs. Never have to go to dirty public bathrooms again! 😊

It’s a typical attitude with those who say they hate EVs. Then when they drive one they admit they are OK. Bottom line is, and I agree with your dad, it’s not for everyone. Technology will change, and it has changed since the outset of EVs. We will have better faster charging batteries that will provide longer range. We will have better infrastructure. All of this doesn’t happen overnight.

Doesn't matter. EV's will forever have Achilles heel of recharge time. To stuff in say 60kwh in 5 mins...do the calculations, look at how to physically implement those calculations, and then give your conclusion. It won't be fine...!

@@jeremylister89I wouldn’t say forever. Batteries are being developed as we speak that will give a full charge in 15 minutes. It will only get better. Developing battery technology is in full swing. I feel confident that things will get better and better. But, what they do have to work harder on is more infrastructure. It is improving, but it still has to come a long way. I’m patient, because the EV that I’m driving will last a very long time. Just for information purposes, it is estimated that 95% of EV produced since 2008 with the production of Nissan Leafs, are still on the road. One Tesla owner reported that in just over 900,000 km he’s using the original battery with just under 100% capacity remaining. That puts to rest those EV hatters that say they only last two years. I’m into my third year with absolutely no battery degradation whatsoever. Full 100% capacity.

I've also owned Teslas for the past five years and only supercharged when I go on a road trip. Which means 98% of the times I charge at home overnight and wake up with a full tank of electrons.

Reverse in to charge is the best and safest way to park. Even when not charging, it’s better to back in and the pull forward with a clear view of your situation.

Typical EV hater never ever driven one whereas all EV drivers have driven a blummin diesel!

This is such an absurd statement I hear all the time. I've done over 11K miles in roadtrips, the shortest one being 900 miles. Zero problems. Negligible time difference (we stop every 2-3 hours anyway for snacks and safety - driver fatigue).

I’ve just turned 60 have been through BMW M3 s Audi R/S models , lotus and Porsche. I drove my son’s model 3 few years ago , my daily drive is now a model Y performance. No way do I want an ICE car back , to not visit a petrol station or have constant services plus it can see of pretty much anything I come across! I plan to purchase a Porsche boxster EV to add to next year where I would have gone for a petrol car in the past .

Hey that is cool it seems almost everybody loves their Tesla ! Also a German car Enthusiast all my life... at 70 I have two older BMWs and a 2020 Mercedes. I love the ICE sounds and both BMWs are manual trans. I've driven a MS and it was terrific. But the Interiors are so Stark. No thx.

Charging is easier than fueling if you have a home charger. I don’t miss having to keep my eye on the gauge and worrying about running out. And the hassle of going somewhere to fuel.

I don't think he hates EVS... More like she's not his favorite daughter.

Regarding fueling, one must remember that fueling at a remote fueling facility is rarely required. Almost all fueling is done at home. We have been so conditioned by a hundred years of history where the vehicle must be taken somewhere else to be fueled.

Good for him for giving it an honest go! As the technology improves people with his needs and mindset will come around. Within a few years range will be 1000km and towing won't be a problem, charging times will be (already are for the newest batteries) 10 min for 10 - 80% (and keep in mind that will be 700km added if you have 1000km range), and charging stations will be everywhere (meanwhile, in ten or so years, gas stations will be closing down). By the end of the decade EVs will be a no-brainer for 99% of the public. By 2035 no one will care that most governments are banning ICE anymore than people today would care if CRT TVs were banned.

My dad is 72yrs old and loves his new red Model Y. He's even using FSD everyday and can't stop taking about it.

Bex, the word you were searching for is deceleration and UK (and EU) regulations are that brake lights must illuminate if the car is decelerating at more than 1.3 m/s^2 (about 1.3g). BTW you missed the big trick by not telling your Dad how much it would have cost if charging at home.

I'm lucky, I can charge at night, in my garage, so never have to fight for a stall at a public charger. With an easy 300 mile range, I can even do a weekend at the farm with no concerns.

We have one car in the family and I have just updated to a Tesla Model 3 RWD following a Kia E Niro 4+ for the past 3 years. We drove the Kia E Niro from near the Humber in UK to Disneyland Paris. We did 870 miles and stopped where we had to stop adding bits of charge. There were free chargers at at Disneyland Paris, so cost me just £35 for the whole trip. For doing 27,572 miles it used 8087.896kWh at a cost of £874.26. An ICE car at 50MPG would have cost £4,011.03 or at 45 MPG £4456.70 The new Tesla has some quirks but far less bings and bongs than the Kia. The buttons for indicators made sense and have been very easy to use. In fact if the trun signal does not cancel just tap the button again. Better than the disco I would get trying to cancel the stalk version sometimes! Finally with the Tesla make sure you navigate to the charger as it will advise you how many chargers are free and pre heat the battery for optimal charging. Also I have seen some drive through charge spots that would be caravan or trailer friendly. Not many but they are increasing.

You could have checked on the Tesla nav screen How many chargers they were and if there is a wait time. Could have avoided that one. I bet it was the same getting him to change to digital TV 😂😂. Good vid.

Oil is finite resource and is becoming more expensive. I wonder what people are going to do when prices for fuel become so expensive, that driving an ICE vehicle becomes unsustainable. What would the EV detractors say then?

EVS are also depending on oil. EVS are far away from being perfect, nor eco-friendly. Supercharges also run on gas, carbon and more. At this moment, EVS are just a way to make more money for some companies… depreciation has been hitting them massively.

@@bastian_baronBut, EVs put what little oil they do use to work more effectively, rather than just burning it. The trouble is, we’re running out of oil. If you can charge a car for a year for the cost of a month’s groceries, instead of a year’s worth, wouldn’t it make more sense to you. That and the pollution from refining oil is creating one heck of an environmental mess. The forest fire season has barely started, and people in Alberta are on evacuation alert, while in the south there are severe water shortages. This is north of the 49th parallel, folks, not the tropics. Talk about fiddling while Rome burns.

The contamination from the mining process and the disposal of the battery after use is effecting the environment. Also the metals used are a finite resource. I'm not anti electric cars, but they bring their own problems and I will honest. I don't know what the solution is.

@@richardrichard9631 Battery materials are mined once, the current ones last fifteen or so years, lithium isn’t rare, it’s found worldwide. Current Lithium ion batteries will be replaced in the coming years with LFP or other chemistries. We could go back to horses, but even then someone will complain about methane. Transport is about lesser evils. Oil is the worst of the lot because of the quantity used. And used. And used.

I have never had to wait at a supercharger. But I live in California. We have plenty of superchargers. I had no idea people had to wait.

One of the ways I explain regen, it's like down shifting on a manual. They will quickly adapt that lifting off with your right foot is like down shifting. Cheers.

Most people can't afford to spend upwards of 40 grand on a car. By the time Tesla's are affordable to average people (Used ones) they will be worn out. The new cheaper Tesla might have a chance... But even if that has a starting price of 25k... to a lot of people it will still be well out of their price range. My salary is 22k... so even if I was able to live somehow without paying any bills or spending any of it - I still couldn't afford a Tesla.

You didn't use the Navigator to see what was availabe :) Was this after non-Teslas were allowed to use the Superchargers?

I'm an old guy too but man alive, my Model 3 Performance is my favorite car and I have quite a few cars. Hating EVs doesn't make sense, it's like hating cars when you have a horse. (Oh, we have horses too!!!) I don't hate any cars, they've all got something for someone. Personally I wouldn't own a pickup truck but they are super popular around where I live.

I have a 12 year old diesel in Australia and go 3 to 4 weeks between fill ups and as I live in a unit home charging isn't an option. I drove 923 km on a trip and was still showing 100km till empty. The car still has years of useful life in it, how would a 12 year old Tesla last?

With all respect to your father, this is not "as good as it's going to get". Technology improves as time passes, especially with batteries and charging times. But he is correct in that This car is not a panacea for everyone. Different lifestyles prefer different features of each type of vehicle.

You never had to wait for a charger because Tesla navigates to superchargers that have free stalls. The supercharger icons in the navigation system also show how many stalls are in use. If you had routed to a far destination, and let the navigation system choose which supercharging station to charge at, you wouldn't have had to wait for a stall to free up.

Before EV's were a thing the caravaner was the most despised/hated of drivers in the country. He's only passing on the hatred that he's received over the years. I suppose it makes him happier.

If you choose to navigate to a supercharger you can see ones with availability and it will 'speak' to other Teslas to make sure you have a space when you get there. It will also precondition the battery to charge quicker

Great video, typical that would happen at the charger. :) There is a definite age aspect to the resistance to new tech. I think the overall adoption will be driven by the younger and next generation of drivers. My boomer parents have finally gotten a hybrid, they may get there eventually, especially once self drive allows them to retain their mobility as they get older. My next car will be a 3 or a Y. I'm heavily into the tech so can see through the FUD. :)

What about the mining of cobalt? What’s that doing to the environment. Which countries are they being mined in? Then there’s the question of what do you do with all the batteries when they are no good? What about where the batteries are made? It will be interesting to see what the effect in the environment will be from the production of EV’s batteries Just saying. It is interesting how this fan and petrolhead idea is introduced by the affluent EV enthusiasts wanting to push these vehicles on to us. Most people cannot afford this technology and the Lexus priced but basically specified Tesla is no real choice for most of us. We just buy cars to get us around and electric is just not a viable option.

It could have been a much better experience for him You could've explained navigation and set it so that it would use a destination with a charger en route, thus rerouting you from fosse park to a more quiet charger I was also looking forward to the grin when he floored it but you didn't take him on the M1, lol

As mentioned in other videos, we had time constraints and the fosse park is the closest charger by 20 miles. It isn’t much use explaining sat nav’s to my dad…once I set him up a basic sat nav to direct him home and he still got lost😂

Fear of change or new things is normal and overcome by education and familiarity.

your dad mentioned the tesla is for around town well I with a home, would never use the tesla charging network and pay triple for power then not waiting at all with a charger at the house.

So you leave the house with 320 miles of range. Are you going to drive for 4 hours straight at 70 mph without stopping? Every day? I got my Model Y 3 months ago. Haven’t been to a supercharger yet. I’m 78 and loving that this SUV can out run my old 427 Corvette or SLK55 AMG Mercedes, on electricity that costs 1/4 of what Premium gas costs, quietly.

at the end I like it - and subscribed to see how the petrolhead will change his mind over time . I had been working for decades in the hq and factories of brands your dad loves like that of the oldest car manufacturer or the Bentley savor and those boys under the four rings. Will be fun to watch him again cause he is quite late at the table . If he would have driven 5 years ago what would his impression be today looking back on those 5 years of experience and for sure the increase of range, performance, charging speed and price drops too ? Imagine 5 years from today ? The next chemistry can be there cause LFP was back then in 2019 no topic on the Tesla agenda even though this chemistry was already for over a decade in mass production. Just a new chemistry and the whole idea can change by a magnitude once you get another 33% of range with a cheap chemistry, more efficient packaging from Cell to battery, some weight reduction and so on. Just a matter of time.

I'm 74 and have had a LOT of cars. Nothing comes close to the Tesla Model Y I drive now.

You should do a video of him using FSD. That may change his mind a little more👍🏻

If i had a house with solar panels on the roof and a drive I'd buy a small ev if it was cheap enough' but i don't i live in a flat so have a ice car suites me fine happy motoring 😊

For those in the US, the current FSD v12.3.6 is stunning and only available on a Tesla. Sounds like it will be coming to Europe and China soon.

Love the 500 mile on a tank. Half full on an average day so 250 miles before refueling on your average day rather than start the day with 300 miles.

It takes 10 minutes to add 100 miles to my Model Y. By the time we grab snacks and use the bathroom it's ready to move to the next stop. Charging simply isn't an issue with a Tesla.

So I know die-hard petrol and diesel drivers from the EU. You were and are now driving Tesla LR. Towing caravans is absolutely not an issue. They have been driving all over the EU since they were retired. One person drove all the Alpine passes with a caravan over the summer over time. He just said that Tesla has a lot more power than its 300 hp diesel back then. They then leave caravans and come back home for special occasions. On camping grounds they talk to others about beautiful places and off they go. When it comes to costs, they just laugh. How stupid we were to spend so much money on a workshop and petrol. When it comes to the security system, they are absolutely thrilled. Mileage without a trailer anyway. My friend is 63 years old and was also a petrol nut. Used to drive AMG for power. Once with me in the MP3 and drove it myself for 600 kilometers and MP3 was ordered. He couldn't believe what he had used. That was right after the trip. Now he has stress with his wife because she really likes the MP3. That wasn't the case with AMG because she felt unsafe while driving. Now he is often a passenger thanks to convincing arguments from his wife.

it would be interesting to see what your dad thinks about an Audi or BMW EV compared to the Tesla

@@sirgardensalot I've never bought new vehicle in my life w exception of very good deal on new 1-ton for business. Still love my 'old' 2011 BMW M3 but I can't see ever spending much on an ICE again except for a weekender maybe. Next daily will be a Tesla but in no hurry.

Personally I love a petrol car I love the sound of my V8 but then again I love electric cars aswell for how simple they are I personally would love a Tesla specially the refresh version since it reminds me of a Subaru BRZ but car is way to expensive for me 🤣 hopefully in the future I can find a used one for cheaper but for now I’ll stick with my current car

He does raise good points about ev’s Poor range compared to ic cars Atrocious range when towing anything Diminished range at higher cruising speeds, compared to ic cars Charging times Poorly designed charge stations, often no roof cover and no drive through set up if you have a trailer or caravan. To unhook a caravan just to charge would be ridiculous. Reverse in to charge, not good for a lot of drivers. Expensive - initial price of the car and cost to charge at a charge stations could increase. Cars are really heavy which calls for a higher load and wider tyre and reduced tyre life. Terrible resale value Eventually all these shortcomings will be in the past. EV’s are improving fast and they will soon be the way to go. I can totally understand older people not wanting to change because they know it isn’t worth it for the few years they have left to drive. They need to improve the range dramatically if they want get more people to change and there needs to be way more charging stations. If you have your own home with solar and mainly do short trips and don’t need to tow for a great distance, then they are worth the change now. Even more so in the coming years when competition reduces the buy price. One the other hand, If you drive on long trips, rely on charging stations for charge, often towing, than no, they aren’t for you. When I say long trips, I mean like me driving 1500klms every week to go to and from work.

People who say they need more range are IGNORANT about the range they ACTUALLY need in their EVERYDAY use. Even this old guy was apparently ignorant of his bodily functions that will require him to stop LONG before the EV runs out of charge.

Reverse in to charge is the best and safest way to park. Even when not charging, it’s better to back in and the pull forward with a clear view of your situation.

Don't get me wrong, I like EVs but I wouldn't buy one yet as it doesn't make sense for me. The range is totally ok if you just do the trips into town. I drove 625 klms each way out west to work. Even the service stations are few and far between and zero chargers so it would be impossible to get there. If you live in the southern half of Australia then you'll most likely have more access to chargers. If you're just going to town, for me 25klms each way, then yes charging at home isn't a problem, especially if you have excess solar. If I want to drive to Brisbane I have one Tesla supercharger on that whole trip so towing anything is not happening either. All my points are valid particularly the ones about towing and parking at chargers. Reversing into a charger isn't possible if you're towing anything and it certainly isn't safer than driving forward. And when I said drive forward, I meant the same as a fuel bowser, forward in and forward out. That would also solve the 'towing something' issue and make it easier for the older generation. I have faith we'll get there but there's a way to go yet.

Petrol heads refuse to accept that petrol/diesel vehicles also looses fuel when being driven. The fact that EVs indicates SOC so clearly and even indicates current power use so clear, makes SOC easy to read and very obvious. Very few ICE vehicles do that, and in those that does, level of fuel and fuel flow is just as obvious. Now, compare ICE vehicles with similar performance to an average EV, or a Tesla Model 3 LR (Dual motor) and see what milage it will give on a tank or liters/km? Similar ICE vehicles (performance & size) will struggle to get 320 miles on a 65 liter, M3 comes to mind. So, its not that much of an issue really. When on long gurneys, driving 3-4 hours in a go is very tiring and when charging say after 3-hours of driving, one can have a toilet call and something to eat, and when that is done, chances are you ready to go at least another 3-4 hours. It seams to me that the EV has only one issue, the Batteries. With that constantly improving, and hopefully some drastic changes coming over the next say 4-5 years, that will eliminate the worst part of the EV, which admittedly is already not that bad! Energy supply, however, that is the Grid, might be an issue if it does not keep pace with the demand added by EV's. So , that will have to be improved and fast! Hope that will happen, by adding more nuclear to the Grid, as that is the most clean and lasting base-load energy source!!!

My "home language is Afrikaans, as I'm from South Africa, not Europe, USA, Canada or Australia/NZ. I grew up being taught, by my folk, to hate the English people and their language, because of our collective history, which you are welcome to read up on! Yet, I did my best to learn the language which I now use all day in business and work. That said, it is still not my native language and certainly not one in which I'm very comfortable at all!!!

I don't have time to watch it all, where in the video does he "floor it"? (Does he even do that?)
