My Path To Becoming A Buddhist | Emma Slade | TEDxSevenoaksSchool

Emma Slade, author or 'Set Free' and founder of the charity 'Opening Your Heart to Bhutan', talks about her path to buddhist, and the situation in which she found herself which caused this change. Emma was previously a successful investment banker and talks about the dichotomy between her current life and her previous occupation, and how this has allowed her to view the world in a fresh light.
Emma was born in Kent and was educated at universities in Cambridge and London. She had an exciting international career in finance which she committed to with mental drive and a tasteful selection of suits. But a deep seated desire to enquire into the deeper aspects of what it is to be a human being was brought to the surface following a life-changing visit to Jakarta, Indonesia. She resigned from her financial career and began travelling and exploring yoga and meditation. Since then she has taught yoga and meditation for over 15 years and continued to deepen a life - long interest in Buddhism.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

@@marcus.the.younger but what is the need to mention it... The statement could be - "Buddhism is an universal philosophy". Seems like a complete sentence. The need to mention the last phrase, "not a typical religion" - is somehow weird. Because, you are disregarding all religions in one go. Well, didn't Buddhism teach acceptance. Ooops... they are just running away from something ... since their early years. Think about it deeply before responding mate.

It seems that leaving everything behind isn't a sacrifice, it's running away from responsibilities. I'd love to become a Buddha right now but who's going to do everything I have to do. I can't even go shopping as I'm needed 24/7 every single day. How becoming a Buddha can help the society? I really don't know anything about it. I thought it was a religion but people here say it isnt, it's a way of life.

Hi, greeting from Jakarta, Indonesia. I am a Buddhism Practitioner. Agree with her speech, Buddhism is not just a religion, but it is a way of life, which called Dhamma (in Pali) or Dharma (In Sanskrit). You have to practice it in your everyday life. Buddhism never force somebody to believe it until you come and see for yourself, which called Ehipassiko (Come and Prove it). Hopefully someday, we can invite her to have a dhammadesana (spiritual speech) in Indonesia.

Covering both the natural and the spiritual, it should be based on a religious sense arising from the experience of all things, natural and spiritual, as a meaningful unity. Buddhism answers this description. If there is any religion that would cope with modern scientific needs, it would be Buddhism." Buddhism helps to learn the reality about the purpose of this life, that is earned by us via "Karma". We have earned a short span of time in this life - in that we have to self realize, find ourselves. Its "Damma" is a full and complete narration of the existence. Like presented here, it is well rooted and described in depth in all South Asian Nations, the monks are well versed and capable of sharing its wisdom with those who are keen to find the path to "Enlightenment".

sandeep r I don’t have the time to explain it in any great depth- research a bit more if you’re interested. There are 4 major ‘schools of Tibetan Mahayana Buddhism- Ngyingma, Sakyapa, Kaguyu and Gelukpa. Zen, in Japan, and Chan in China, were introduced into these regions by either Indian practitioners (or those from the Himalayan regions) and the Chinese and Japanese then adopted and adapted Buddhism to fit in with their other cultural and spiritual beliefs and practices.

Brother, there is no need to hide the truth. even Hindu is against Buddhist philosophy and had lots of action taken from Hindu against Buddhist. Fortunately, Tibetan has kept the main teachings of Nalanda University and great masters of Tibet. Try to revive the lost knowledge of ancient Indian wisdom about mind. 1st Hindu needs to learn how to accept the mistake, and then individual development will start. Otherwise, always remain in the loop. Indian leaders try to carry the relics of Lord Buddha to other Buddhist nations to gain political support in geo politics and economics. On the other hand, shrilanka's top religious leader brings the Lord Buddha relics to offer His Holiness, The Dalai Lama. What did you see from that. Learn to accept mistakes, brother.

You might like to start by observing yourself, your body sensations, thoughts, emotions etc A simple theravadan tool for this is to place your body in a safe, quiet, not unpleasant place, Then focus your attention on your stomach rising and falling, with your breath ...just pay attention without trying to change anything Distractions will come such as thoughts, sensations etc, which you just mentally note/categorise For example if thoughts arise you note it as thinking If emotions arise you note this as emotion Whatever the distraction after noting you return your attention to the stomach rising and falling And that is about it There are several forms of meditation ...but the above helped me Good luck

Regardless of the possible positive outcomes from using psychedelics as treatment it's important for people to meet with a licensed psychiatrist before consuming anything. In many cases psychedelics can worsen conditions or give someone new symptoms like anxiety and even something as severe as schizophrenia with using LSD. Op whatever you do, be safe and steer clear of misinformation. The use of psychedelics as a therapeutic substance is still a new topic and hasn't been researched fully. If you are tempted to try it make sure that you first receive approval from a licensed psychiatrist.
