My (Nightmare) Experience with the Copper IUD//How the Copper IUD Can Mess With Your Hormones

Hey guys! Today, I want to tell you about the nightmare experience I had with the copper IUD. I had it for almost 8 years and while it started out ok, it eventually gave me terrible side effects. I know tons of people that have had great experiences with IUDs, but it definitely did not agree with me. I wish I had known more about the potential side effects when I had gotten it, which is why I wanted to share my experience with you guys! I think when it comes to birth control, the more information you have, the better, so you can make the best choice for your body and your needs!
In this video I'll answer these questions:
What is a copper IUD? 00:43
Why I chose a copper IUD? 1:07
My experience with the copper IUD: 03:00
What it was like getting my IUD removed? 06:24
How the copper IUD can affect your hormones: 09:03
How I am healing post-IUD: 10:37
If you've had a similar experience to mine or a great experience with a copper IUD, I'd love to hear about it. Drop me a comment below! If you have any questions, I'd be happy to answer them!

So relatable thank you. After insertion I had several cramps that I would describe as the same feeling as early stage or even mid labour pain that unlike contractions wouldn’t give me a break. I had 20 days of heavy constant bleeding to the point of almost passing out no doctors or health professionals would take me seriously. I felt like no one really listened to me either.

Thank you so much! After having my iud for 3.5 years. I’m starting to realize the gradual health issues I’ve been experiencing are due to the copper iud. Hair thinning, weight gain even when I’m eating right and working out, heavy periods, 2 week long periods, brain fog, Recently back pain and what sold me was it prevents the fertilized egg from coming into fruition. I’ve always been a super healthy person and in February of last year had an emergency gall bladder attack and they had to remove it! I’ve seen people mention that it can effect There digestive system as well… Not until this past month that my period has been even longer and started earlier than normal. Got an ultra sound and from the naked eye everything looks good, but something just clicked and I’m doing my own research and taking my health in my own hands. Going to schedule removal and try to research a more natural route🙏🏾 Thankyou

I had PPD after my third baby, so I was afraid to take/use any hormonal birth control, and so I got the copper IUD. This was over a year and a half ago, and I finally got it out this week!! The long list of random symptoms that started happening over that time is insane. I had no clue it could take such a toll on my life. Thank you for this video!!

Really excellent video! Haven’t seen such an informative while also negative review of the copper on here yet. I’ve had mine for 4 years and my periods are now 9-14 days long, extremely heavy and full of awful cramping. Experiencing a lot of the same things you described plus now being low on iron and needing to take supplements. OBGYN immediately recommended switching to minera as it has few hormones and no estrogen. I’m very hesitant as I love my IUD, just hate my monsters periods, but I really needed to hear your advice about shopping for doctors! Thank you for sharing

I highly recommend reading the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. I am in the process of reading it now and it’s SO informative about how women’s bodies work. I feel like it should be a textbook in high schools haha!! I’m shocked by how much I didn’t know about how my own body works. I am learning about and starting to do the fertility awareness method of birth control and it’s actually much simpler than I thought it was going to be. It might be something worth looking into! In my experience, most obgyns only know to recommend different conventional methods of birth control because it’s what they are most familiar with. But it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s what’s best for your body! I thought I’d really miss the security of my IUD but I was honestly ready to never have sex again if it meant not having the worst periods ever lol (kidding but also not really). But now that I’m learning more about fertility and alternative birth control methods, I am feeling so confident about my choice to get it removed. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with monster periods right now 😫😫 but don’t give up!! You’ll figure out what works for you!! I hope you find an awesome and supportive doctor and I hope your periods get better!! 💗💗 Sending love and non-monster-period vibes 😉🤗

I’m getting mine removed next week !! I am at the 3 year mark and having the same side effects as you listed . I also got extreme nausea and stomach pain. I thought it was something dangerous so I went to the emergency room and every test was fine. They never mentioned iud. I got my period and all the nausea and pain immediately went away, which shows it’s definitely the iud that’s causing this. Can’t wait to get it removed !!

This video has quite frankly validated so much of my experience lately and I'm feeling confident now in getting my IUD removed end of this month. I've been experiencing SO MANY autoimmune-type issues in the last two years (i've had my copper IUD for 9, and it's since slipped down a bit) as well as have developed uterine polyps and an ovarian cyst. Learning that IUDs essentially cause inflammation by function is frankly, so eye-opening. THANK YOU for sharing this information. I can't wait to get mine removed soon.

Was great to watch your video. I cannot take hormonal birth control as it makes me nauseous and depressed. I thought the copper IUD was going to be my saviour. Thank you for sharing your story! I'm approaching the 3 year date of having my IUD and my symptoms are similar to, and a little milder than, how you described them at your ~4ish year. My side effects were really barely anything to speak on for the first 2 years, and then I started noticing that they've been gradually getting worse. I'm starting to think this iud may not be entirely suitable for all bodies to withstand a full 10 years of. I've been wondering and wondering what exactly this iud was doing to me and finally I found your video, so thank you again, because it's a really great stepping off point for information! Definitely going to keep doing research and maybe cut off my time with the iud to 5 years. Maybe I can take a break, then come back to it?

There is a massive variation in oxidization. I see people with IUDs that come out after 10 years looking brand new. Meanwhile mine came out without any copper left on the plastic just 7 months after insertion 😂 I'm laughing now cause it's been a while already, but it was madness. My liver was about to fail from all that copper. But like they took out the IUD, and it was all black copper dust mixed with ugh tissue. Thing is... Good luck finding any doctor who can do good enough imaging to see how fast your IUD oxidizes. They sure didn't see the status of mine, they kept saying it was all good. Until they got it out, then we were all like, well, it doesn't actually look good besides the plastic. 😂 (No, no metal sensitivity, nothing, just a very fiesty uterus that decided to turn the copper rod into dust.) I read a lot of IUD stories since, and it definitely seems like a thing that people don't tend to notice early that anything is off. But then suddenly the issues kick in, and they never calm down again (except with removal). So my totally non scientific two cents is if it starts to oxidize fast for whatever reason. Get it out. If you loved it originally, you might want to get a fresh one. Otherwise find a different method. I hope science catches up with me at one point 😂

(I'm on a different youtube account since the above comments) pelvic pain, legs twiching, skin burning and heat sensitivity, light sensitivity, brain fog, nausea, constipation, water retention, high temperature, acid reflux (including chest pain), rib cage painful (due to enlarged liver, and gallbladder issues), bladder issues, hair texture and color changes, some hair loss, melasma, histamine issues (eg. allergies worse and not being able to drink coffee or alcohol anymore)... backache happens to be one of the potential issues listed on the patient information leaflets by the way. i obviously have heard "it cannot be related to the IUD" over and over again, until a doctor bothered to listen and take the IUD out. *surprise* my issues went away within weeks. some of the issues went away within literal hours after removal (eg. never had a vision issue or bladder issue since). all up in everyone's youtube comments since, cause it sure is going to take a few years till the FDA forces the patient information leaflet to be updated.

This was after my 3 year mark. First two years or year and a half i didnt notice much. So glad to be done... never planning on using any for of bc ever again... theyre all bad news. But you mentioned that you started having dreams and where wondering what it is... I've heard that dreams can be a way of God speaking to us... and then also... I've heard that too much copper in our bodies triggers our "reptilian" brains and separates us from the source God. I believe in God like Jesus... but anyways. Thought I'd add... not sure if the second part is factual actually but kinda fun to think about :)

The only thing is you'll have to write it down on your own. I'm sure you can find more detailed videos on how to track your cycle and know when you're ovulating here on KZread. So yea, just basically avoid having sex around the time of your ovulation.

I'm not sure about the low blood pressure though... but everybody reacts differently. I had many other symptoms that I forgot to list too... like chronic bv and I'm sure I'm still forgetting more.

I have had a copper IUD for a year and 4 months now, and its not funny. 2 weeks to my periods, I always have severe cramps from my tummy down to my thighs that I sometimes think I will get paralyzed. And I started having acne after having the IUD inserted, my period date also changes a lot. Let me not forget the part of me having mood swings, nausea and overly emotional. 😪😪😪😪

My mini is giving me anemia but other than that its the best method I have ever tried. The numbing gel made my insertion painless. Canadian copper iuds have a smaller size line and apparently that alleviated the side effects I got from skyla the synthetic hormone iud.

Guy I am supposed to get one in two months:( this video made me rly nervous now. I have been on the pill since 15 originally for acne, but now (at 18) my acne had mildly come back so i feel like what’s the point of the pill if it’s not going to help my acne and the pill has made me lose all libido which has affected my relationship a lotttt so i want something non hormonal… which is why i chose the copper iud. My heart rate is also so high for my age and bmi considering i go to the gym, run, and live a moderately active lifestyle, which is a side effect of the specific pill I’m on (the generic version of Yasmin but still exact same pharmacological composition). I have no complaints about the pill other than that, and heart rate the more serious side effect, I didn’t even know about until awhile ago, no weight gain, no mood swings, no other issues at all! Maybe I am opening a can of worms i shouldn’t be and just stay on the pill… i just hate the fact i have unnatural hormones in me when on the pill. My dr has said it’s completely person preference but if it were my preference i’d be on nothing at all (which probably wouldn’t be smart considering i don’t plan on having kids anytime soon). Anyway i totally over shared but i just need other ppls opinions:/

I had the kyleena iud (hormonal) for 1 year before removal and also had no dreams during that time.. same as with the pill. I'm also using the fertility awareness method and decided against a copper iud, thanks to videos like yours. The only way I could describe being on synthetic hormones is feeling like your either going through adolescence (pre-pubescent) or menopause and your energetic/emotional state is a flat line with few highs or lows.. but that "flat line" brings more lows than anything. That was my experience anyway.

Thank you for this video! My Copper IUD is due to come out August 2022, Ive had it 10 years !!! Insane to think Ive had it that long. I noticed heavy and painful periods too, but I would say at the 4-5 year mark I started losing my sex drive, super fatigued, memory issues, depression, lack of motivation the list can go on ect. Has anyone experienced this? I am a healthy almost 33yo I also have a very loving and caring husband so its not a life thing.. I am also a Paramedic RN and i know stress can do crazy things to the body as well. But.... It has always made me wonder if all my big and small symptoms come from this dang IUD. I remember reading in one of my nursing textbooks about how high amounts of copper can cause Alzheimers. Its made me wonder if all these years i have been slowly and continuously dosing my body with copper. There may not be hormones in this but this thing is definitely a hormone disruptor !

Hi there! I been experiencing a lot of shoulder and neck pain on left side, brain fog, headache, random shooting pain in lower abdomen, anxiety, nausea and depression for three months now. I also had periods twice a month which I haven’t experienced before. I did have the copper IUD removed a few days ago. The nurse also did a urine pregnancy test and came back negative.I feel some aches whenever I press on my lower left abdomen and felt a little discomfort while using the bathroom. I’m still worried about ectopic pregnancy cause those symptoms are pretty similar and it can occur even with the IUD. I’m not sure what to do except wait it out. Hopefully that’s not the case. Maybe I should schedule for a blood test and ultrasound just to be sure 🙁
