I was also told that it would be painless and experienced a large amount of pain. I was also told that there would be no change to my monthly cycle (I was getting it for birth control and was asking what to expect after insertion). Same. The insertion was uncomfortable and I can handle pain pretty well. The cramping after insertion was mind boggling. I had to lock my office door at work and lay on the floor writhing in pain. Two days in a row. I thought I was going to pass out and throw up from the pain.

First IUD I had was Skyla. It was amazing! I got a very light period probably once every 3 months. Little to no symptoms. When I went in to get it replaced, they told me Skyla wasn't available so I got Kyleena. When they took Sklya out, I cramped right away and It didn't go away for like 10 minutes. The doctor told me to push through so she could place in Kyleena. I really don't like Kyleena. My symptoms have become worse, I have chronic migraines now and varied symptoms every month. I guess the only good thing is that my period is regular. I know exactly when it's coming. Getting this removed tomorrow, I'm so ready! 🙌

I’ve had the copper IUD for a week and am getting it taken out bc the cramps are killing me. Almost crying and hurts to move. Getting it put in was the most painful thing I have ever experienced, I passed out on the way home in the middle of crying in pain. Update: I got it taken out after 5 days of having it. Again, excruciating pain. 20 mins on the way home I was having a full on panic attack and couldn’t relax any part of my body bc I was in so much pain. After laying on a heating pad at home for about 10 minutes the 5 day pain was completely gone. I’ve heard it doesn’t hurt nearly as bad to take it out for some people. Looking back, it was horrible and I’d never recommend it to anybody just bc of that traumatic experience. The dr who took it out was very rough with my body when she opened my legs, didn’t give me a warning and just ripped it out and I was screaming in pain and said something along the lines of “hope you feel better have a good day”then walked out. I could hardly walk to the car. My husband was there every step of the process thankfully. They really need to knock us ladies out before inserting them.

Hi Jaylin, I'm so sorry to hear that! Definitely check in with your provider to have a more thorough evaluation done to rule out an infection or structural abnormality of your pelvis, a pelvic ultrasound would be helpful. It's important to determine the cause for your pain first to know what will best help.

It shouldn’t make you cramp constantly. I have mine now 8-9 months. I didn’t have any cramping. Also very regular cycle, up till last month I all of the sudden didn’t got my period anymore. I only sometimes have some cramps after sex. But that is like once in a few months. So I guess that it should not feel uncomfortable. A little cramping once in a while is normal. Just get it out if your body is not doing well on it.

Hi Dian, there is no need to wait, it can be started right away. Severe cramps is a side effect of the copper IUD and most likely will resolve when removed. If the severe cramping continues it indicates a hormonal imbalance and looking for the root cause of this would be best before initiating the pill.

I believe you can have it removed any time if you choose so or if something is wrong. I believe the doctor usually has you come back shortly after insertion to make sure it’s in right place and make sure no bad side effects etc. I also remember the first few weeks or months some ppl do have cramps or abnormal bleeding but it’s considered normal, it’s different for everyone like our bodies react differently takes a bit to get “used to it”. I recall having crazy cramps but nothing bizarre, didn’t last long, and I used to get cramps as a child (when first had my period) so again I felt it’s my own body getting used to changes. All this to say you can choose to do what ever you want but talk to doctor and talk to friends or family that had similar procedure to compare what is expected. Everyone is a little different, but it’s nice to know you are not alone if you not feeling 💯 Hope all is well.

Hi Cher, this can happen with both types of IUDs due to the removal itself causing some of the uterine lining to shed.

Hi.. I had an appointment to remove my copper iud and strings weren’t visible. The doctor tried to get it out but the pain level was so high, I could not bare it: crying from pain, begging her to stop. And I swear, I’m not a drama person!! She had to reschedule my appointment to the time when my period starts as it should mage it easier to remove the device.. appointment is coming up in few days, and I’m petrified of the pain!! Please advise, what can I do for pain management? Also, aren’t we more sensitive to pain during our periods? I’m so scared to go in.. any advise will be greatly appreciated. Thank you 🙏

Hi Oksana, I am so sorry to hear this! This is a rare occurrence but not seeing the strings can complicate things. You want to check in with your provider regarding medication for pain management as they know your medical history and what is safe for you specifically to take. Typically though you want to take medication at least 1 hour prior to the appointment so it has time to work. Being on your period can help open the cervix making the procedure a bit easier so this is why. Good luck with everything!
