My New Favourite Camera Bag.

#camerabags #photography #fstoplotus
Another day, another camera bag video. I've said it before, but I think this could be the bag to last a long time for my photography trips and needs. The F-stop Lotus has space for everything I need without any extra, and up to now I've never found a bag that fulfils that relatively simple criteria perfectly. I think this one does...

There's more acronyms for you! MOLLE: MOdular Lightweight Load-bearing Equipment. It can also be called PALS: Pouch Attachment Ladder System. As mentioned it's a system created by the military for attaching a variety of pouches to tactical gear like vests and backpacks. It's been finding its way into the civilian wold more commonly as it's a simple way to allow the sturdy attachment of a huge variety of accessory pouches and all kinds of other things.

Thank you James for yet another great video. I have had the F-stop Lotus for over a year now. The pockets on the sides are ideal for my waterproof over trousers, gaiters etc. The front pocket is great for my waterproof jacket or a down jacket. I have tried using a bladder with the pack and it works ok, but unlike most hiking bags where the bladder is against your back, the bladder fits in the front of the bag (else you would not be able to access camera equipment via the back) thus the hose has to go further to reach the outlet port. Also I wouldn’t use a bladder when my laptop was in the bag for fear of a leak. Although you can get a sleeve for the bladder. I have a molle water bottle holder attached to my hip belt and a IFAK pouch on the other side. The material seems hard wearing and it is easy to clean if you lay the bag down to access camera on a beach or wet, muddy hill. I tend to use the straps on one side for my tripod, and for walking poles on the other side. I agree that the bag isn’t the most comfortable but I have just put that down to my middle aged spread. The other ideal about this bag is it can be used as cabin luggage, or if need be, you can remove ICU, zip it up as a carry on and check in the rest of the bag. Hope you enjoy using this bag. Keep up the good work and hope all goes well with the move.

Bought this bag in 2017, use it about 4 times a week from beach to mountain - still looks nearly new. Have to spend time arranging straps to fit your body, but time well spent. Hydration system works well when I need it and I use 'D' rings from climbing shop to hook other items if needed, but loads of pockets for everything. I use two ICU's depending on amount of gear/other stuff required - can be fiddly to attach to internal loops, but it's awkward not impossible. Only gripe is my tripod sticks out the side pocket, but that's small price to pay as I don't want a 40 litre + size bag. 3 years in, think it'll double that at least.

I have the f stop Loka - the predecessor to the Lotus. I've used it for 5 years very hard and it's still going strong. It is the most comfortable camera bag I have ever had, providing, as with any bag it's adjusted correctly so that the weight goes onto your hips, rather than your shoulders. It's very secure and doesn't move around. It works very like a good mountain sack. I like the fact that you can put in different ICUs to take account of how much camera gear or how much clothing you want to take, which is especially good for winter conditions when you may want more clothes. I also have the Sukha. I used this last year to walk the Trotternish Ridge on Skye,, taking camping gear as well as minimal camera stuff and food for my dog who came along for the trip. Again it 'carried' very well, particularly when you consider I had nearly 20 kilos of stiff on my back. I love these bags!

You were right ... it is refreshing to watch a channel where you actually use the gear rather than continuously review new gear (promote new gear/influence us to buy new gear). Also great to watch a channel that doesn’t crap on about continuous autofocus in video mode ... which most of us ‘normal’ (non-vlogging) people only use between 7.3% and 9.4% of the time.

Hi James, thanks for the video, I've just been looking for a trekking camera bag and the F-stop was one of the possibilities, so it's nice to see it mor in detail. Also, about the straps, it's the MOLLE system, deveolped by the military to attach extra pockets or compatible gear in a modular way, so you can build your loadout exactly for each situation, but if you don't, I don't know, it looks nice.

James, I just like your channel because of you and you do whatever you please! I also love the location where you live, the sheep and dogs and anything you find interesting. I know the weather is often not the best but it is different and beautiful in my eyes. It is that you are a regular guy and what matters is only what matters, no need for nerdy stuff. When Emily is on it is an extra bonus, she adds to the subject in her own way, I laugh quite often. Sometimes I think your just a mess, but I like messes and I am a mess myself!!! One comment on bags, when you went from full frame to micro 4/3s it would have seemed like your bag would be too big??? What happened to all that newly recovered space? Also is it the reason you enjoy your new set up because in part you don't have to carry around all that heavy equipment? Thanks for all you do, your channel is one of the best photography channels to watch! Moonpie!!!

I’ve fought with the issue you describe too - wanting a small bag that can carry everything. The mole/webbing can be a way that you can use a small bag and carry additional stuff when you need to. My lowepro bag comes with a pouch with a Velcro attachment which you can stick on the mollle. That can be used for water bottle. Add a dry sac and you can hang a stick a layer in it. Ideally everything would be inside bag. But it does give a lot of flexibilty

8:10 those straps are for two purposes. 1) they reinforce the hip belt and prevent stretching from heavy use and 2) on that pack, they've sewn them on as molle straps so you can connect carabiners or other clips to them.

I have the Lotus. I hiked Nevada Falls in Yosemite with it and it was fine, not uncomfortable. Only issue is with rear-access “hiking” packs, the water bladder is held at the front. But heavy items should actually be close to your back for centre of gravity/back ache reasons.

I got the Sukha about 6 months ago and love it for overnight and multi day trips. The straps are amaaaaazing on that bag and it feels great on the back; something I'd had trouble with. I grabbed the lotus a few months ago as a daily carry and freakin' love it. The straps arent as great as the sukha but they dont need to be; the carry load should be nowhere near as heavy. As for the little bands you were asking about, they're for hooking things onto the bag with carabiners. You could also use them for MOLLE attachment pouches. Really good for adding some extra optional carry. You could, for example, get yourself a small MOLLE pouch big enough to hold your m4/3 lenses so you dont have to down the bag to swap them. A MOLLE drink holder could be a good start

Yeah, as mentioned it's molle webbing - a modular system that you can attach various things to. I have it on my bag, but it's annoyingly vertical - so I got some straps to convert to horizontal... Then I could attach fitting for water bottle, and my favourite: a 'dump pouch' very handy. I'm sure you could find a burrito pouch with Molle compatibility, that way you only need to put it on when you need it. Like a tripod attachment.

You once made a video called How to vlog, but it was mainly about what you use. Wouldn't you like to make a sequel about that and then show / tell how you get to a video. How do you choose a location? How do you determine where and which b-roll you film? How is the story telling? And how do you keep the viewer involved? Actually more about the How than the What about vlogging. Hopefully I can learn something from that and use it, together with some English humor in my Dutch videos. Thanks!

I searched and searched for a good camera bag for day trips that didn’t cost the earth. Finally I found one within budget and packed with features. It was a ski/snowboarding bag, the mammut nirvana 35l. Sometimes it pays to know the features you want and go off piste (pardon the pun) in your search.

You are right that most people who talk about build quality have NO idea what they are talking about. However, if you are familiar with how a product is manufactured, and what materials were used, you can often tell a lot about longevity from a brief look. With backpacks, you'll want to look at what material the body and straps are made of, what type of stitching was used and what thread (especially at stress points), as well as what kind of zippers were used. The stitching is especially important at stress points, as is whether or not there is any reinforcing material there. With that bag, I'd also be looking closely at any reinforcing at the points where the corners of the ICU would make contact with the external bag, since those points will wind up taking extra wear and tear from external abrasion.

The little strap things on the side of the bag are called MOLLE webbing. You can use it to attach stuff to your bag really securely. Also I’m wondering if you have ever had a look at the camera bags made by Evoc? They make a few different camera bags aimed at hiking and mountain biking. They have spots for the hydration bladder as well.

There is a big difference between your new gear which you will use in upcoming vlogs, (which is interesting) and ALL the new gear that some reviewers try and be an expert on after a day of shooting. I have 7 day bags of varying size and capabilities, 2 panniers that are often adapted for camera gear and 2 travel packs that convert to suitcase style carry on- the perfect bag is elusive!

Had the Fstop Ajna for a little over a year, had to swap it... bit unconfy while on long trekks due to the straps, and cause after a week in Scotland (March, so rainy...) two of the velcro things on the side just decided to start breaking and one of the loops at the bottom broke as well (and fstop just didn't even bother replying so awesome customer service). It was nice, and I still have it...just in case my Shimoda breaks and I need something really quick, but not a chance I'll be back with Fstop any time soon... Glad you like the Lotus! finding the "perfect" camera bag is...difficult :)

The trick for getting the Velcro straps through the loops on the sides of the bag is to reach one arm down through the top of the bag while holding the ICU and strap in place with the other hand. That puts you in the position of pulling the strap through instead of trying to push it.

My main concern with camera bags is the weather proofing, I have a rain cover over a mindshift bag and it basically filled the interior of the camera compartment with water once. So I’ve settled for the Osprey backpack, internal camera unit thingy solution. I can even have an internal try bag, in case I fell in a river or something. I can get at my gear easy enough and have all the stability of a proper rucksack/space for things I’ll need in the mountains. Plus, proper vented harness so no back sweat 💦

The Molle webbing is for attaching additional pouches or other molle compatible addon's. Outside of my Think Tank 30 Digital Holster, I don't own a dedicated camera bag. Mostly because I shoot wildlife and hike, so Instead I carry my 48L Osprey-Kestrel with whatever equipment, food, layers, that I need for that trip, including extraneous things like crampons, snowshoes in the winter. The digital holster is quite versatile, and can be carried inside my Kestrel or strapped outside it someplace. I might've made mention of that in the past, I don't really recall. Right now I'm trying to find a small hydration pack, the Osprey-Raptor 14L to take on my rides, I own a Norco VFR Hybrid road/trail bike.

I have been using the Mindshift 26L for last year or so as I needed one to fit United Airlines hand baggage rules for USA trip. Love it (even the green colour!) and so comfortable but like you found it a bit small when wanting to take clothing layers and food etc. The F-stop you have looks good but when I was looking Shimoda had the Action X Kickstarter campaign going so you got a significant discount on it and it has expandable storage with some easy access points. I went for the X50 (50litres!) which finally arrived in June after Covid delay. Only used it a little so agree can't be sure on build quality but looks good and, like F-stop, Shimoda have a good reputation and use an ICU system internally, room for bladder if you want and better when carrying full sized tripods than the Backlight is. I do like the metal rings on the F-stop harness though. The Shimoda ones seem to be some type of plastic (or some fancy compound). It has webbing for attaching pouches too lol. Unfortunately only colour choices were black or green so I went for black this time - hoping it will show up better when I lay it down in some long grass and end up wandering off with my camera!!

Hi James. Reading through all the comments I could manage but I could have missed something like the following: James Popsys, award winning photographer and videographer (and some time drone operator) using solely Lumix announced today a new business venture for photographers. During the covid lockdown Popsys has further domesticated SHEEP who now carry his photography gear on small sheep packs wherever he walks and talks. This combining two of his fav motifs and themes in his videos: sheep and camera bags. In his most recent video he hinted at further revolutionary changes concerning tripods which a leaked source suggests special "Sherpa" packs for the sheep that carry the tripods. The only thing Popsys has to carry now is his hydration pouch and the sheep biscuits/goodies that are part of his domestication project.

It's not just you with the hooks. I have both the Tilopa and the Shinn...installing the ICU in both was a major pain and I ended up having to take scissors to the velcro straps to trim them so they would fit in the hooks. It's easier by far just to have an ICU for each bag, configured identically. But aside from that, I really love both bags, I've had the Tilopa for a couple of years now and it's practically indestructible. Now I just need something smaller for cycling...you had suggested the Mindshift but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Those loops look kind of like MOLLE which is used to attach other pouches and things to it. Started on military or tactical gear, but is useful pretty much everywhere. The new Bronco has an option for MOLLE seat backs to add pouches or bags or whatever. Im not sure if thats what those loops are, or if theyre just there to provide extra structure. May be worth a look though.
