9:18 Editing the photo
Photography mistakes are always a hot topic in magazines, videos, blogs and forums, but most that get spoken about don't exist in my opinion. The aim of the game in any art is to do what you like, and to try and produce work that suits your own tastes and visions.
In this video I explain why listening to others and their rules too much can be a bad thing for both your progression in taking good photos, and on your unique style!

Hopefully people watching you do the editing also realize that there's no real right or wrong way to edit and it doesn't have to be complicated. Some sliders, some mostly straight line filters, and some brushes in Lightroom and you can be fine without needing Photoshop.

I like what you said in the beginning about no mistakes. I'm currently teaching my 16 year old niece photography and that's one thing I've tried to get through to her. If you achieve your artistic goal, nobody can tell you it's a mistake. You can learn all of the rules, but don't be afraid to break every rule to see your vision come true.

At the end of a photo edit, I sometimes caught myself wondering whether my work is technically right. This video is the advice I’m thankful for. Recreate your vision of the photo. Stop worrying about rules.

If you don't follow the rule of thirds it's deemed a mistake. KZread is full of vlogs telling you to avoid making certain 'mistakes' - so this is very refreshing because most of what's being peddled to us as photographers is complete nonsense!!! :)

The panorama has more soul (your editing enhance that) than the drone shoot IMO. I use that technic often too, very handy!

I like your definition of a mistake, it's not about obeying the 'rules' but about getting a compelling image. Matt Irwin posted a very similar video yesterday about ignoring rules and following your own instincts and ideas.

Thanks so much for that acknowledgment in the beginning! I've always found the actual content of your videos to be balanced and fresh, embracing the possibilities of the digital workflow while focusing on the art of photography. However, taken at face value based solely on their titles, some of your videos may have slightly contributed to the conformist message you're talking about projected by a large part of content creators. It takes an enormous amount of insight to judge your impact to this extent (much more than opining as an outsider), and I think this is extremely promising for future content!

The weather turned that into an excellent tutorial about sticking with your original intention, which is very refreshing. The drone shot added greatly to the intended theme. As a drone flyer I would suggest you get counselling and you have to get over ALL worries/neurosis about flying - get it out, get it up and shoot :) ( within the constraints of the drone code of course ) !! It will never just "fall out of the sky" unless you have been a plonker. I never take a camera out without the drone, they offer 2 perspectives of the same scene which I find brilliant in post - they are the perfect partnership. A very enjoyable clip James.

Quite right about respecting your own vision, James. I'm not that knowledgeable as a photographer, but I've been in enough creative writing groups to know that most "constructive feedback" from them isn't about making YOUR story better, it's about how you could have made your story into the one the critic would have told.

So many good picture options in this video, many many potential keepers :) for example 4:36 - the sheep in the foreground of those trees on the little hill, shot with longer lens (y) 4:47 with long exposure would be interesting I guess. A very nice location, each little hill has a huge potential. For my taste that road is actually what disturbs the landscape in this location. And as you mentioned, due to that you simply cant have it all in the picture.

Soooo true. Same goes for doing competitions at camera club and getting feedback from judges.......often just makes you feel so hamstrung with all the things you know judges are going to say like how you could have cropped it better when you know you have tried numerous crops and ended up with the one you like, or you should have cloned this or that out & you don't agree, or it's too busy when it's a forest photo in the mist that you absolutely love. Judges always feel that they have to find something to pick. Have now decided to just do what l like & forget about comps. Better not to let all this stifle your personal creativity.

Such beautiful scenery there James. Very much enjoy seeing your process. Totally agree with you when it comes to photo mistakes. Obviously, you can make mistakes, but not being willing to risk mistakes will keep us from growing and finding our particular loves, niches or gifts. On another note, I would love to see you explain how you go about selling your photos and the process around that. Not sure about everyone else here, but I am finding that I am now receiving requests for some of my better photos, but I feel very lost on how to go about things like, selecting which ones you want to market, finding a print service and deciding on pricing. Your reasons for that mistakes video are exactly why I will never get my work reviewed by some other photographer. All you get from them is their view of what makes a good photograph. Also they weren't at the location so they really don't know what was possible. And even if they were they still don't see the scene the way you do. So in the end you start taking photographs that others consider a good photograph and NOT what YOU consider a good photograph. Learn the basics then you can start creating your own style of photography and not someone else's style.

There are plenty of examples where I have made a conscious decision to do something when taking or editing a picture, and if someone says I shouldn't have done it, I can chalk it up to a difference of opinion/style. That's fine. At the same time, an outside opinion may be able to make me think more about how I've composed or edited my shot, perhaps giving me an idea of something to try next time I'm out taking pictures. I think the key is to understand that you're getting an opinion and not a rule, and it's your prerogative to use some or all of what you're told. As long as ideas/criticism is provided in a constructive and polite way, I'm happy to receive it. Worst that happens is I ignore it. Best that happens is I learn something valuable.

First of all James, very entertaining which is the game ! Well done. be careful though your starting to sound like Sean Tucker!!! Nearly lost my phantom 3 once ! Just seconds away from shutting down, grabbing it off a look out with a 60m drop into a river below! The skill with drones I feel is the ability to be a bit higher than you can reach or a place that you can’t place a tripod. I think you could have got that same shot with the drone. But lower down the hill with less sky and contrast against the mountain in the background. But gained a skill that you shared with the edit. Cheers from down under. 👍🏻🍷❤️🇦🇺

Yes I get it regarding drones, on top of the inherent dangers I’m also paranoid about the know it all that comes up to tell you drones are not allowed! About right and wrong or mistakes, I just bought my son (11) a gimbal for his phone to improve his video, he hasn’t watched all the videos telling you what to do and what not to do so he does what he likes, 9 out of 10 are rubbish or average but 1 is inspired! His favourite mode though is panorama stills, which he does everywhere with some surprising results.

Thanks for the video, James. Really informative. You didn't mention which one of the cameras you took that with? G9? You didn't have much reason to take the S5 with you, it wasn't night or anything :)

Another interesting video from you. I think I agree with you that the perspective of the drone shot with the wetter conditions might have been even better but what you’ve got is pretty good in its own right. But I’d be interested to know how you managed to stitch the various photos together given that you were holding the camera and I’d have thought there might be all sorts of parallax (is that the right term?) issues between the shots. I can only remember seeing vids of other photographers creating panos with the camera on a tripod. Maybe the topic for another video??

Thank you for sharing your editing process, always good to get the thoughts behind the process. Do you use a Wacum or other type of editing tablet? I’m thinking of getting one for a little better control of brush strokes. Thanks for sharing James

Mark Jacobs I have just retired after 40 years. I have used Wacom tablets for nearly 20. My advice is put your mouse in a draw and forget about it. Use your pen for everything even opening mail or word docs. You will never go back to using a mouse. It will take you about a month, using it all day everyday to forget about your mouse. Enjoy.

Know the feeling. Here in Norway you can have a splendid forecast only to be assulted by apocalyptic weather 15 minutes later. Typically when you have a non weathersealed lens mounted.

Have you done a video on how you put the different pano images into the editor and line them all up? Or could you recommend a video on how to do that? I really liked what you achieved with those images and even more so because they are a collection of hand held images. Yes, I am kind of a newbie when it comes to editing. In any case, thank you, James.

James, I am going to say something that I have always wanted to say but was too afraid too. First, I love where you live, it is almost like a page out of a dream, the hills, the green, the sheep??!! BUT, (Here it comes) I have never seen a place with such unpredictable and mostly plain rotten weather in my life!!!! I can understand that Brittan is just a big island but I have lived for over 20 years off the coast in the States and we never get this much crappy weather! Speaking of which, what is the temperature on a normal day??? Seems to be always chilly or downright cold. My hat is off to you because it would probably be the last place I would want to be a photographer, except for the cool hills and all. I think I would break my leg the first day there, it's rocks all over the place. I am amazed at how well you ride a bike! Moonpie

James, a wee bit advice... a male sheep with all his bits could be valued at 10's of £1000's. Look at them the wrong way and they can keel over. Ok, that last bit was folklore, but the prices weren't. Good luck! With your drone. Be well!
