My Mustang Mach-E is BROKEN and UNFIXABLE by Ford evidently..

I am a Service Manager at a Ford dealership, and I completely agree with you, and understand your frustrations. Being a software issue, there is nothing that the technicians at the dealership can do to fix it besides download and install the software that the manufacturer provides. This is frustrating for the customer, and for the dealership. My goal is to get the customer taken care of, and nothing is more frustrating than having a customer upset with my team when we want to help but our hands are tied by the lack of effective software solutions. We are also frustrated with the FordPass appointment setting function. It often does not integrate with the dealer software, and appointments don't come through. The other problem with online appointments is that the service department doesn't see them until the customer comes in and gives their information for the advisor to look it up. People often set appointments online for things that require a long time to repair, or don't even have a solution from the manufacturer yet. For anything other than just basic maintenance, I always recommend calling in and setting the appointment with the service advisor, so they can explain the process and manage expectations. I'm not saying this is the customers fault, I am just explaining how that system works so you know what to expect and can plan accordingly.

The attitude of the Service Department at the Dealership is, unfortunately, typical... regardless of make and model. To top it off, they plead with you to give them a 5 star review. Change dealerships. I've found they are not all the same. Some, probably the minority, actually care to do their jobs. On the software issues... this problem plagues all auto manufactures. Car companies are not software companies. Ford knew this a decade ago with their SYNC system, so outsourced it to Microsoft. But, then, you have communication issues on what the Manufacture wants and what the software vendor understands. SYNC had issues (per Consumer Reports), though mine seemed too work fine. Tesla fights a different battle. They were never a car company (as evidence the first body they used was a Lotus Elan). Tesla is a Tech Company. This is why they have better software, but... the actual car isn't as good (e.g. fit and finish issues).

Modern autos have 20-30ish networked computers controlling all aspects of the vehicle. Not sure why Ford is having issues with this reflash but I wouldn't say it's because they have little to no experience with software. That’s great! BUT, have you gone on any road trips that required charging? Good luck brotha!! I’m out on the road on long trips (300 to 1,400 miles) all the time and see the ridiculous charging stations you will have to rely on. Just wait, you’ll get there and there will only be 4 to 6 chargers. 2 will be broken and the others will be difficult to use since you have to “log in” and pay etc. Pain! Then while your sitting there frustrated at the slow charge speed you’ll look across the parking lot and see a Tesla supercharger station with 20 to 50 chargers with lots of happy Tesla owners getting their electrons quickly and easily. Sorry bro you shoulda bought a Tesla! Reading this will make you a little angry and you’ll be in denial. Just wait, you’ll regret your purchase of that POS ICE OEM EV. No disrespect, but it will happen.

I was thinking of buying a Mach-E, knowing that there might be some first year issues that would have to be fixed by the dealer, but if they can't fix the problems with the vehicle, that is a very different scenario. Thanks for letting us know what you are going through. If I was in your situation, I might start the process of returning the vehicle under the lemon law. I would also contact Ford, let them know my plan, and demand a solution from them. For their own upgrade process to brick the vehicle is beyond belief. Also, I would demand a second key fob until they can resolve the phone app issue. If they want you to pay for it, get an agreement that they will give you a refund if you return it after they fix the problem, or they can't fix the problem in a reasonable time, say 30 days. And keep documenting your issues and bringing the car to dealers until they fix it or you meet the lemon law criteria to return the vehicle for a full refund. Knowing that you are going to stick them with a defective car will likely work wonders on motivating them to fix it.

Yes, Ford *DID* say they would do OTA updates. But - here's the slimy part - those OTA updates are for the nav system, basically the maps. They do not include operational or firmware updates, neither does the Chevy Bolt do that. At least in the Bolt's case (maybe for Ford as well), having to have the owner come to the dealers for a firmware update was an agreement from Chevy to give the dealer a chance to sell the owner something.
