My Motorcycling Viewer #1

Recently a viewer of mine sent me dozens of clips of him riding his motorcycle. I think they're perfect for a new series, where we have a quick fire look at general riding.

    Certainly not a seasoned veteran, but @4:40 with those couple of clips of that delivery scooter, and he suddenly goes up a few notches in my estimation, given the competition. Shocking driving. Whoever hires them ought to be prosecuted, and whoever uses their delivery service ought to be ashamed of themselves. This rider is a saint in comparison.

Really good mix of stuff, lots of comments about how you could improve, which may be the case, but hopefully you see it as constructive criticism rather than finger pointing. He's just got some old habits that most (including myself at one time) motorcyclists have. Closing gaps down in anger if someone overtakes at the wrong time or undertakes etc... Filtering too fast at times, expecting cars to complete right turns. It's all things that most of us do or did. Thankfully after watching this channel for some time I have (almost) changed my driving habits to avoid these things. I say almost because I'm not perfect and sometimes slip into old habits and have to check myself. If I find I'm having a particularly bad day on the road I imagine Ashley sitting next to me observing my driving and I soon sharpen up!!!

    4:12 Those are white diagonal lines with a broken border, according to The Highway Code: 'You should not enter the area unless it is necessary and you can see that it is safe to do so'. From the position the motorcyclist starts the clip in, they absolutely cannot see if it's safe to do so...and I'm pretty sure filtering is not a neccessity in the first place.

  • @OpinionsRUs

    @OpinionsRUs

    9 ай бұрын

    This is a chin-mounted camera, and the point of view is probably slightly below chin height. The rider's eyes are at a higher level. I do not agree that we can determine that he "absolutely" cannot see. Even as it is, for me, it was safe to proceed as slowly as he did. If I was being super-picky, I would point to the Police Rider's Handbook and say he probably did not work out in advance where he could merge back into the lane. As for necessity, in my experience people who use that word cannot, or do not want to, do the thing in question, and just want to prevent others doing it. Imagine the glee on the faces of JSO protestors if the government said "you do not _need_ to go out on a Sunday drive, so you are not allowed to". UK law, in principle, does not limit us to what is necessary, or what is allowed. It only sets out what is proscribed. This is one of the fundamentals of our civil rights. I asked the police rider who taught the BikeSafe course I attended what "necessary" means in this rule, and he couldn't tell me. Because the Highway code doesn't tell us. So what gives me, or anyone, the authority to define it for someone else? Rule 88 specifically gives filtering advice, and the tone implies it is a perfectly normal thing for a motorcycle to do. The rider in question seems to have followed the advice given. And, in my opinion, it was necessary in order to make sufficient progress.

    There was a bus gate of the type shown when I lived in Enfield, it's basically a width restriction allowing cars through either side and buses through the middle, it stops vehicles like lorries from passing beyond that point.. There are now new types of bus gates that are effectively LTN blocks.. It's a short length of bus lane(6 feet or so) across the entirety of the road that cars aren't allowed to pass, cyclists are allowed through.. Bus gates are being used in conjunction with cameras and if you cross the white line into a "gate" it's an automatic fine.

    I have literally just driven through the width restriction shown in the first clip (Wealdstone/Hatch End, in Harrow). As a resident of the area, and a biker too, I am totally unsurprised at the Mercedes drivers behaviour, or indeed any other brand of car. I'm pretty sure they just wanted to get ahead of the bus, and had no regard for other road users. The quality of driving in NW London is appalling. I have a family member, who is blue light trained, and says that he knows when is in the area, as the driving behaviour is noticeably worse. Stay safe fellow Biker.

    We have a bus gate where I live, Gravesend, in Kent, alongside the railway station. It is supposed to be solely for the use of buses, taxis and bicycles, to restrict traffic through the transport hub, where all the bus stops are, but a huge number of car and van drivers ignore it and just drive through it as a shortcut, apparently with impunity.

    Motorbiker and Truck Driver here o/ Your viewer still has A LOT to learn but some of their riding was pretty good. In some clips you can just about make out the L plate on the front and hear the classic thump of a single cylinder 125, so I'm going to assume this is a beginner who has passed their CBT but been riding for a little while. Just a couple instances where the bike rider needs to be conciencous of how **invisible** they are and make a better effort to stay far out of the corners and sides of vehicles, particularly on junctions, intersections, queues etc, where the other drivers are most definitely distracted by another task and not looking in their mirrors or blind spots. Otherwise, kudos for sending the footage in. I feel inspired to stick a camera on my helmet and go get some footage now!

    Testify Ashley; say it out loud: SPEEDING ROUND ROUNDABOUTS CAN CATCH PEOPLE OUT! How many times do we see people driving like that end up using the horn to have a go at those who got caught out? A couple of sharp intakes of breath watching the rest of that and not always due to the other traffic. The rider could do worse than take an advanced riding course - I assume, though I may be wrong - that they already possess a bike licence. Just one point: avoid manhole covers on bends, especially those that have been polished by years of traffic. They can be lethal, especially if you lose your front wheel with a car coming onto the roundabout the way some do. And remember Audi spells danger.

    Having never ridden a motorised bike it is always good to see things from their perspective. A few of those situations I was thinking to myself why would you be there when you have no protection but then I think the rider is smaller so thinks they are safer. A nice collection of good, not so good and somewhere in the middle. Hopefully over time, like us drivers after we pss our test, the viewer here will refine their roadcraft to be a little less prone to being in almost the wrong place at the wrong time…and maybe a little more observant when cars are signalling right 👍 As the saying goes, no harm done and all part of the learning experience

  • @HarmonicaMustang

    @HarmonicaMustang

    Beginner rider and advanced driver here. You do feel smaller and able to squeeze into tighter spaces than a car, but feeling invincible as a result is a very bad attitude. Every time I feel more confident and relaxed, I just need to look down and realise I'm not far from that asphalt and need to take care. Observations are super important to your safety and the safety of others, not just for hazards like pedestrians crossing in between cars during traffic, but also things like gravel and mud, which do not seem as significant in a car but can be lethal to a motorcyclist if not navigated correctly. I'm a bit disappointed to not see the rider here use his horn more. It's there to let others know of your presence, and he could have avoided many close calls by using it in a timely manner. I like to cover it with my thumb when approaching an obscured junction, or when I see someone waiting to join at a junction. Don't get me wrong, riding is exciting and freeing, but if you want to live to ride another day, you must be prepared to ride defensively and make constant observations.

    I passed my full bike test in 1981, then when I passed my full car test in 1984 I quit riding on 2 wheels and haven’t been on a bike since. So after 40 years last month I bought a new motor bike to join up with my old biker friends. having passed the advanced RAC ACU biker test in 1981 i was amazed how much I had forgotten about riding a Bike. 1st outing I was all over the road, learning how the steer again properly, [it was the slow manoeuvre city street cornering where I struggled]. So for the 1st 2weeks I was going around like I was riding on egg shells paranoid about every vehicle coming anywhere near me. It’s a large bike 900 triumph so am not going to be zooming in and out filtering like the guy in this vid, [it is suited to slow speed cruising] Having been an accomplished professional car driver for 40 years it has been a wake up call to revisit riding a Bike again. I will say watching a lot of these helmet cam biker videos makes me cringe with the danger that they put themselves in.

    You should know BMW use an electronic/computer controled indicator so you can't just cancel them once you've touched them you just have to let it blink three times (tapping it does a 3 blink, pushing all the way does the constant blinking, believe you have to press it fully again to stop it when it doesn't auto cancel) probably was trying to cancel it by flicking it the other way witch just makes it do it 3 times again

    To be fair to the BMW driver at 1:25, it could be an electronic issue. I sometimes drive a VW Fox that can have a meltdown when you manually cancel the indicators; you end up going from one one side to the other until it pulls itself together. Of course, it never does it when you're trying to fix the problem, it could even be a design fault.

    On the BMW driver who " flashes" his indicators left, then right, then left, I'd say he hasn't had that car or make too long. To cancel a signal manually ( with my BMW anyway) I need to push the stick in the same direction to cancel as to put it on in the first place, ie if I've put the signal on by pushing the stick down, then push down again to cancel. Pushing up cancels the original signal, put also puts the opposite direction signal on. It took me a few days to figure it out, maybe some BMW drivers never do, so just don't bother with them in the first place....!

    It's not clear whether the camera biker has a full licence, but, as Ashley says, there is room for improvement, in observation and decision-making. I have survived riding bikes for over 50 years, and sometimes learned my lessons the hard way, but I'm still learning now. I am continually thinking, "Could I have handled that situation better?". If you don't learn and adapt, you don't get to be an old biker. There was some diabolical riding by the two food delivery riders on L-plates featured in the clips. Sadly, this seems an all too common sight now, whether they don't know any better, or just don't care about other road users.

    In my other homeland of Vancouver Canada (yes, again!) we have "bus hopper / queue jumper" lanes. The best example is at the northern end of the Lion's Gate Bridge heading south. At the bridge slip road entrance, the slip road itself has a short busses only "queue jumper" lane whereby buses can bypass the traffic queuing to get onto the bridge deck. Traffic there can be particularly bad. Especially as the bridge deck is only three lanes with the centre lane a reversible lane. And the slip road itself is four lanes merging into one, plus that short bus queue jumper lane.

    Thank you to the rider for sending in these clips. You know when to use your brakes and when to use your accelerator to solve problems, but from my perspective, you are weaving WAY too much through traffic and staying WAY too close to cars, especially staying in their blind spots (e.g. at 2.14 and 2:49). I have no problem with bikers and bikes, I think they can be a great way to reduce traffic congestion, but as a driver I'm concerned that riders like you pop up unexpectedly and in places I can't see you. You make some good judgement calls in these clips, and it would be a shame if you get hurt by being too eager to filter. Anyway, best of luck.

    Great to see some MC clips, thanks Ashley/viewer. As a relatively new (but mature) motorcyclist one point i've noticed is that i tend to ride a little closer when following than when driving, not tailgating exactly but definitely closer. This puts me in a better position to overtake but i also do it even when happy to just follow. Mentioning as sometimes i can tell this cam make drivers a bit nervous, or they pull right into the gutter to help me pass (helpful but i don't always want to)... of course will back off if I feel this... just saying this as I realise I do this as i'm using the vehicle as a kind of shield, particularly when passing side roads when someone might emerge after the car has passed and not seen me following.. i want to be past that junction before they've had a chance to emerge! Treat others with respect, be sensible, accept that you and others might make poor decisions at times and don't be a complete dick. Stay safe everyone.

    Only you know the distances you're talking about, so you may be totally fine, so please ignore if so as i'm not being critical! But for other new motorcyclists make sure you don't get too close / tailgate as 1. cars can generally brake / stop alot faster than bikes; 2. being further back allows you to see hazards that have passed under cars in front (like potholes, gravel, road debris) and thus allowing you time/space to react and go around them; 3. being further back is less stressful as you're giving yourself more time to assess the bigger picture of all hazards, reducing your stress means less fatigue especially on longer journeys; 4. it puts less stress on the driver in front, so they're less likely to make a mistakes / get distracted; 5. passing junctions and using the car in front as a 'shield'... that 'shield' may have obscured you altogether and so emerging cars pull out on you. Better to be further back and move/weave slightly (0.5m or so) within your lane so the emerging drivers eyes can pick up this lateral movement.
