My motorcycle is BANNED here in Senegal 🇸🇳 |S7E29|

In this episode I am riding to Fadiouth in Senegal, but I have to leave my motorcycle in Joal, on the other side of a wooden bridge. Even though I could easily ride over the bridge - motorcycles are not allowed on Fadiouth, and they have a very good reason why!

    I couldn't help but notice that despite the density of human population on the island, the place was spotlessly clean. Not a sign of a plastic bag or candy wrapper anywhere. A very orderly community.

    In rural Africa very few people buy things in plastic bags and it’s hard to find candy in the first place. But yes, a lovely island that the residents clearly cherish.

    An island that was basically made by its inhabitants must feel quite a bit like home to the Nerderlandse you. 😊 The shells would mainly trap silt and form the soil that is the actual fundament of the island, so the process must really be similar to how land was gained from the North Sea. A fascinating place indeed! I enjoyed this one a lot! 🤗😍 …and the 20 minutes of being in sync with the fellow Itchy Booters are over again. 🥴 See you all on Wednesday! 🤗

  • @jwenting

    @jwenting

    quite different really. The shells are dumped on an existing sand bar probably, what allows the trees to grow and gives the whole place structure. The place is above sea level, but barely. No pumping needed though probably need to constantly bring in new material to counter erosion. In the Netherlands the polders are created by building a sea wall around an area, then pumping out the water. That pumping never ends, if the pumps were to fall silent for extended periods the place floods.

    Our Noraly exudes a friendly confidence everywhere she goes and its noticed instantly by anyone she meets. I gave up worrying about her when she cruised through Central America. (Her incredible ability with languages is the key...) The drone shots just get better and more compelling to watch. It's surprising how dramatic they can be. To see Noraly off in the distance as a little speck and the entire landscape around her, is a knock-out punch every time. I learn so much about the local cultures she goes through it's better than a college lecture. And she puts us right there, too. Up close and personal.

    These two islands remind me of Montenegro Bay of Kotor, where there's an island in the middle of the bay built by the people using rocks. It's smaller than this island and also has a church on it. It's pretty cool to see that this is a global way of people expanding the living space near the coast. Using shells is pretty amazing and I can't even comprehend how you start with this idea given that people started this a long time ago. There are many cemeteries in my home country of Bosnia and Herzegovina with mixed religions buried in the same cemetery. Thanks for the great content Noraly, this is so much more down to earth with actual people and it's in ways more informative than the documentaries I've seen about African countries.

    Ah, so nice to be out of the city! Beautiful landscape. Shell (and coral) as a building material was also popular centuries ago in the US in Florida - it's called coquina. Check out the Coral Castle sometime. 😊

    You are so amazing and an inspiration to women everywhere. As a man 76, I am appalled at how women are now treated here in the US and wish more women young and old could see there are many possibilities for them to find happiness by following their own dreams.

    I too am 76yrs and it’s been 50yrs since I Honda’d through PNG. Love travelling with this beautiful lady. And a lady she is. Am doing outreach work in Australia meeting very damaged people sharing this work with ladies who care and are kind with gifts we men do not have. One day soon, before this world implodes, we will see a cleansed earth where “the meek shall inherit the earth and live forever on it”.

    I was stunned to see this place. My postdoc during the past 2.5 years, was part of a greater EU research project that aimed to create and commercialise sustainable concrete, where seashells are used as the aggregate. I think that we have some lessons to learn from these people :)
