Hi Dan I could listen to you all day, we are both in our eighties now still doing bonsai, it is bonsai that gets me up at 7am every day, it is bonsai that got me through the lose of my wife in 2017. I started working with bonsai at pretty near the same time as yourself and like you and a few others the information at that time was almost non existent, I scoured garden centres for cheap material to practise on usually stuff the centres had no use for due to various reasons then garden centres were mostly privately owned but now they are all part of big conglomerates, so they all look and sell the same tight range of plants not suitable for using as bonsai, again like yourself I used what ever I could find to use as pots which any way where not available or too expensive. I was a member of two bonsai clubs in the 90s but found them both elitist and not very welcoming so carried on my own way, unfortunately work got in the way plus illness which meant I had to sell all my trees and start again later but the same thing happened again so gave up for a long time, now I have around 80 odd trees but like you I am crippled with arthritis so not able to work on raw material. People ask me which are My favourite trees and are surprised when I show them a couple I styled many many years ago and managed to keep which are far from perfect but they take me right back to that time with fond memories, I also have a couple of your pots which I love very much. Thank you for allowing us to hear part of your life story and look forward to more in the future. Joe

Hi Sensei Dan, My name is Herden Pedrajas, from Southern Philippines. I started bonsai in 1989, and I just want you to know that I am your number 1 fan on this part of the planet. My earliest influence was your "Bonsai Book", it is what I considered as my bible on bonsai. For me, it is still the best book on bonsai because of its wide coverage in brief, very comprehensive and inspiring - plus the haikus. I started the Mindanao Bonsai Society in 2000, and it is still thriving. Our club is a member of BCI and bi-annualy holds the Mindanao Open Bonsai Exhibition and Competition. Looking forward that someday we can meet. Thank you so much for the inspiration and the joys of bonsai you shared. God bless you always!

Hi Dan, great to see you still at it. I used to come down to visit you many years ago with my mate Bill Baker or on my own for some tuition. I still have a couple of trees I bought from you (probably at least 20 years ago) a San Jose Juniper and a twin trunk white pine. Thanks for the great memories and keep up the good work! Tim.
