Bonsai Back to basics - tree 4

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Chinese juniper Dan is working on here is not an entirely a ‘rubbish’ tree but material that is this young will take a few years to be an acceptable bonsai. It should be emphasised that the tree created at the end of this demo is just ‘Day One’ in the life of the bonsai and no attempt has been taken to style it beyond a basic ‘skeleton’ that will support the foliage to be grown and developed in the future. Let’s see what he’ll do with the material available....

Two thoughts….What I appreciate in your videos is that they give information that straddles beginners’, intermediates’, and more advanced bonsai enthusiasts’ knowledge/skill levels. Really well done. Also, I had a thought on the “container” for this tree as maybe a root over rock or growing sideways out of a tallish, rough rock crevice. Well done and thank you for sharing your love of bonsai.

Thanks Margaret for your kind comments - I have very few bonsai left as I'm trying to wind down my collection as I struggle to lift some of the trees they're so heavy. I may have a group of seedling maples that need a look at sometime - maybe they'll do???

The Juniper turned out beautiful Dan. I have a juniper I made from an air layer about 4 years ago ideal trying out your demo.

I was wondering the other day if you were going to do more 😄. Amazing video. These are the sort of instructional videos that help us newbies really appreciate the skills needed. Love watching the process step by step with your knowledgeable and entertaining commentary and opinion. If you dont post new content before Christmas. I'll wish you and yours a very Happy Christmas in advance. Cant wait to see more in the future. Thank you Dan Barton! Im sure all of us really appreciate you taking the time to do this series for beginners.

Hi Dan nice to see you back enjoying work with some basic material as you did when you were younger, quite a lot of straggly branches which makes it more difficult to produce a credible bonsai, some times it not what you keep it’s what you don’t that gets you where you want to be, I like you don’t have the energy now I am in my 80s but still like to work on my trees and get frustrated when I can get out and be amongst my trees. I will use your method learnt from the masters to remove as much foliage so it becomes easier to wire fine branches. Thank you for allowing us to watch you work on a piece of material which at first glance didn’t look too promising..

Thank you Joe for your very kind comments - I'm currently 85 years old and spend most of my energy making pots. You can see some in the pottery section on my website: www.danbartoncreative.co.uk
