What's the funniest about this whole thing to me, as a Polish person, is that the S2 bombed so hard in Poland and was met with so much hate and disappointment, that now in turn S3 has close to no promotion here. Like, I live in Warsaw and so far have only seen ONE (1) promotional poster and it wasn't even very visible, just on the inside of a bus stop. I actually chuckled, I was like "oh yeah, S3 is due in a couple of weeks, no way I'm watching XD". For comparison: when S1 was coming out, it was on all the biggest billboards in the city center. It gives me this weird kind of satisfaction that us, as a fandom, did such a good job of being outraged, while simultaneously feeling defeated, that Netflix can afford to prolong everyone's torture and refuses to just let this show die with some dignity left.

As a Slavic person, I was excited at first, and having seen Henry in period pieces, I knew he'd be a good Witcher. It's just sad that all the complex moral questions, the Slavic mythology and *feel* of the books/games were replaced by a mishmash of fantasy tropes and Games of Thrones-y look. I also still remember the showrunners blaming Covid for not having actual Slavic actors in their Slavic-inspired production. ugh.

The books don't have too many slavic references. Andrzej Sapkowski (author of The Witcher books) criticized slavic fantasy and said in many interviews that while writing The Witcher, he wanted to show that all the books inspired by slavic culture are cheap in what they do, so he based The Witcher on multiple cultures, mostly nordic. Video games have way more slavic inspired monsters. Some examples: - bruxa is portuguese - silvan is roman/greek - djinni is of arabic origin - dragon is in every culture, same for basilisk - doppelgänger is german - siren and driads from Brokilon are from greek mythology - kelpie, werewolf, sukkub, wild hunt, amphisbene, griffin, manticore show up in multilple mythologies, mostly greek, roman and anglosaxon The story is also inspired by many cultures - tales from France, Denmark (Andersen), Germany (Brothers Grimm), some nordic references (Ragh nar Roog, Naglfar, Hemdall, Kambi, Freyja), celtic (Merlin, Galahad, Nimue). From slavic mythology there's striga and kikimore, I'm not sure if something else. If you have more slavic examples, you can throw them in a reply.

@@Kondiqq Just because the names are different, doesn't mean there aren't similar creatures in Slavic mythology (with some exceptions). And by Slavic mythology, of course I don’t mean a single particular country, but many around Central and Eastern Europe + the Balkans. There are witches, vampyrs, rusalki, vrkolaks, various kinds of woodland creatures and spirits, demons, etc, which I'm glad at least the games showcased (hence the books/games in my comment). That’s the thing - Sapkowski might have consciously tried to be above writing something _specifically_ Polish, Slavic or nationalistic-sounding, but *his identity has an effect on his writing* - the "feel" from the style, tropes, the way he uses language, the dark humour, the melancholy, the topics of state, power, corruption, tradition, superstition, the lesser evil… Hearing some of the names of characters and places… They rang different for me, as someone from the ex-Eastern bloc. The way he describes some cities and landscapes sounded familiar to me because I’ve visited such places here. Some people’s behaviour and mentality is familiar - it’s still present these days. This is why when analysing literature, we look at the author’s own backstory - it shapes the way you see the world. And in a similar way, our identities as readers will have an effect on how we imagine these stories, how we interpret them. So, sure, put a jinn in the story - doesn’t matter, I know I’m not reading anything like 1001 nights. Put an Arthurian flavour to it - it’s still not an Arthurian legend. I think this is why so many people were impressed with the games - they took those elements and really emphasised that Slavic feel which would be new and interesting to the gamers around the world. Hearing my country’s folklore in the ost? More, please! *The show exists because of the games' popularity anyway* and since they kept talking about the "Slavic fantasy", I thought, hey, we might be getting actual representation that's not the usual (iykyk)! I thought they would try to take *the best of the books and games* and give us something different. Instead, we got another generic fantasy that has just several really good moments (which Letalis has touched upon in his reviews). I have a lot to say, but I’d have to write a whole analysis and I have neither the time, nor the motivation now that I’ve seen the show.

There's a lot you can criticise the show for, or make fun of, but going after the physical appearance of actors is just mean and unnecessary. I would have maybe made different casting choices here and there as well, mainly with how old or young characters seem in comparison to eachother, but the casting itself does not seem like a core problem of the show, and neither does the acting....

They are still minor characters though - unlike Cahir, Fringilla and Yennefer, who live, but got character assasinated to such an unbelievable extend, that they might as well be dead and replaced by psycho-dopplers. Most people didn't seem to care back then, though, even when the writing was on the wall and it was obvious that this shitshow is dead on arrival. Instead, people willfully chose to chomp up garbage because it has a brand name with familiar face on it, to the point where criticism was shot down by the community itself. I literally burst out laughing when I saw this casting in the video. Jesus wept. Just yet another example of Netflix not understanding or just outright refusing to understand the world and WHY certain characters look the way they do. I thought Foltest was bad. This is with no disrespect to the actors. But it is a fact that certain characters being ‘conventionally attractive’ is fairly important to the premise and DNA of the character. Yet again personal societal conquests and ideals are being placed before the quality of the production. Incidentally I don’t disagree with those ideals, but it’s so weird to hamfist them into something that doesn’t need it. As always with this show any level of genuine adaption and quality is thrown in the bin for all manner of nonsense, to the point where it’s just comical and hilarious to me.

What confuses me so much is whenever Hissrich got confronted about the lore inaccuracy of season 1-2, she always said that the short stories and blood of elves were “difficult to adapt.” Although there is evidence of her saying the contrary, the main gist was that we had to “wait and see” for season 3 where she would really show us what she was made of. She wrote a dozen or so tweets about how much she loved time of contempt and the council at Thanedd, and that we would be mesmerised by her vision of this important part of the books. Essentially, we had to trust her cause her vision for thannedd is gonna be incredible. Cut to the trailers where not even the costumes look good/accurate- with Geralt looking like a bouncer at a cheap casino, and it really shows how shallow this all was.

From what we've seen in the clip revealed at TUDUM, Yen's fire scene is against Rience. Rience flings his fire magic at her, she deflects it at one of his thugs. Not gonna lie. It was quite emotional seeing Henry give his final farewell speech to everyone, while being humble and praising his fellow cast members. It's just such a shame. He was so great in the Geralt role and wanted to do right for the fans, but Netflix, showrunner and the writers totally squandered it. Sigh....

Złotolitka in Polish is some kind of insect similar to a fly, just in case 😁 Also Yurga and Złotolitka lived in Zarzecze which in Polish means "Behind the river". I think it's because they don't really care about the books and the lore. They just use Witcher brand as means to show their political agendas, include inclusivity and diversity and such. Overally they want to fit all those charts to make themselves look like they are some messiahs of woke media. The producers have probably a giant board where they have a checklist like "Black characters. Checked! Gays and lesbians? Checked! Strong and Independent women? Checked! Weak male characters? Checked!". Considering how popular Witcher is now, they use this brand to profitise on it.

Ok. Imma gonna say it for what it is - Yennefer's Thanedd dress looks very Indian/Egyptian to me and although Anya looks sexy and beautiful (my point is in no way a criticism towards the actress) but I feel the producers purposely did this to highlight and bring out more Anya's heritage as a giant middle finger to the fans who wanted a more book appropriate actress in terms of looks/style. I'm firmly convinced Netflix will do EVERYTHING OPPOSITE of what the fan base wants or generally what the books describe - just because they can. I've been wondering if the costume designers were going to adhere to the lore of completely see through dresses the sorceresses wore but it looks like they erred on the side of playing it safe and modest when modesty was not a thing at this ball at all. LOL Geralt had to keep Yennefer in the forefront of his thoughts to not get too distracted and to mentally "tell" all the sorceresses who tried to read his mind that they could all "choke on their envy." The book had more-or-less the same characters and goals as the original, the story vaguely followed the source material, but everything was distorted to the point that nothing made sense. Same with Netflix's The Witcher. Nerdy Avallac'h, the possible romance between Dandelion and Radovid, caracters, who change their minds randomly, heavy plot armor, random laws of the world that are broken the next season, etc. Only, Bored of the Rings was written as a parody. Vilgefortz I imagine appears more similar to someone from Ofieri in this season and they pulled more closer to 90% of season 2 from their butts not just the ending. Maybe Dandelion and Vilgefortz will put together a goth band. They should've ended season 2 like in the books with Geralt basically on the brink of death after fighting the brothers and Reince, would have been a great cliffhanger for those not familiar with the books and intertwin the fight the Yennifer teaching Ciri at the temple of Melitele. The could have given Nenneke and Jarre a proper introduction and set up Ciri meeting the unicorn in the desert and the events during equinox. So many great moment that have had no set up that may not even happen in this one dimensionally written show.

I wish Sapkowski was like Glukhovsky and his Metro 2033 adaption. American producers wanted to have Metro 2033 film placed in Los Angeles and Glukhovsky rejected their offer. He knew that moving the action to USA would completely deprive his work of identity because Metro 2033 takes place in Russian subway stations and those are very different from US ones. The same is with Witcher. By americanising it, Witcher completely has lost its identity. It's no longer a unique fantasy world. It's now just another clichè American fantasy.

I'm a bit confused. The first Witcher game takes place after the last book in which Geralt seemingly died to a lynch mob and a pitchfork. The games make it so he survived, and continues the story. But in the games the Wild Hunt is introduced through 3 games as new villains while it seems they have appeared much sooner in the books.

  • @xLetalis

Other than Ciri, most characters, including Geralt, had very little interaction with the Wild Hunt in the books, so for the most part they are a new threat

  • @TrykusMykus

The games and the books macro story connects pretty well. It's not like "the games make it so he survived", his survival was very much expected and described when the books were read. I'm not gonna go into the details, but it's all there in the books. What the games introduced is the idea of Geralt having amnesia. That's all well described in the games on the other hand.
