When you guys do the oil change at 4.4 quarts do you guys top off after you start the car and the oil filter fills up? I do my own oil changes even on my new cars but I’m curious because the owners manual does give a capacity but it’s never that straightforward when filling.

Get out while you can off this trade. I've been doing this five years. There's no future as long as flat rate exists. I've got out and now making much more with weekends off, full benefits. We, mechanics need workers unions, if not get out.. Lube techs, whatever dealership they work will never get paid more than 15, or lucky if getting 19 per hour. There's no garantee when working flat rate you will make 40 hours. Warrantee work pays shit. Get into a dfferent trade, electrician, or even a course in electronic engineering or electrical engineering. The only reason why I worked as a mechanic for 5 years it was only hourly and always wage per hour higher than the previous job. As a flat rate tech, you may get shitty jobs while advisers give out the gravy to their "favorites" mechanics. You literally will depend on the foreman, or service advisor who must sell the iob so you can make decent money. You have no control over your work. There's a study done which proves mechanics are leaving in droves this trade and dealerships and independent shops are struggling to find qualified mechanics. But these bastards don't wanna pay a living wage and yet, they bitch and complain about the lack of qualified technicians. Not to mention, most mechanics are up to their eye balls in debt, spending thousands of dollars in new tools just to keep up with new technologies. Even worse, as electric vehicles are now taking over, making it more difficult to us.

That really sucks because I've been doing some jobs myself (the easier more common ones like suspension, brakes, engine mounts, hoses, engine accessories and fluid flushes) just to save money but unless I was a master tech with 10 years experience I may not make enough money to get by, as you said. I'm just having a hard time understanding this because I see all the local shops and dealerships are constantly busy with full bays. Are they trying to treat this entire industry like it's nothing more than a minimum wage burger flipping job for teenagers who live at home? Is that really what we've come to? Also, with the exception of the electrical trades, I see every other blue collar field being notoriously underpaid especially truck drivers. I just don't get anymore.

The idiots at a local Toyota Express Oil Change over filled my wife's 2020 Camry SE 3 and a half qrts over what it took. I no longer trust anyone to do my oil changes I do them myself now. Just as bad as Wal-Mart centers. Hope you guys do better than they do. They did make it right by checking all the seals and areas that could have been damaged from the over fill and they took my advice on making it to where they have to show the customer the dipstick showing the correct oil, level to avoid that happening to somebody else. Good luck on your future endeavers!
