Absolutely one of my favorite missions in the game. Riding down the hill as the music kicks in is right up there with the gang rolling up to Braithwaite Manor for me. Different reasons and emotions for each mission of course, but still my favorites nonetheless.

I always liked that scene just before Eagle Flies arrives. Arthur calling out Dutch and his actions, Micah stepping up to Arthur and then Charles, John and Sadie walking up behind Arthur as if to support him. You have to wonder what would have happened if Eagle Flies hadn't arrived at that time. It looked as if things were about to boil over at that moment.

Pretty sure Dutch was livid seeing all those Braves riding with Arthur and not him. I’m guessing John rode with Dutch mainly because he was on thinner ice with Dutch than Arthur I do think Bill and Javier were trying to stay on Dutch’s good side even if it meant alienating the others. Mary Beth, Karen, Uncle and Pearson probably heard about what happened at the oil field and decided that was the last straw and fled.

I have a feeling Karen probably didn't leave on her own. Not sure who helped her flee, but I highly doubt she was ever sober enough to ride a horse without falling off and breaking her neck. Or maybe that is what happened. She tried to flee on her own but she was drunk and it ended up getting her killed. I mean, by 1907, she was no where to be found.

My mom has a masters in communication and with as much programming and writing as she's done has far surpassed what's necessary for a doctorate. When playing this game for her to watch, I asked her straight how his first speech felt. She said it already had suspiciously manipulative language. Then with the three times in chapter 1 where he puts Arthur on the ropes for asking simple questions, forcing Arthur to backtrack and nearly beg Dutch to believe his loyalty, she xalled out that that is classic manipulative behavior and a lot of it. He's a cult leader and a narcissist. I already knew this because I've learned a hell of a lot from her, but her confermation makes me triple down that he was awful before, but the reason he went crazy is because he was losing his grip on his control of others. And a rabid dog doesn't back down when it's hurt or weak. It will drag whatever it can down into hell with it. There was no giving up for Dutch. He was clawing. He wanted "freedom", continuing to "seek" as he reads to Mary-Beth and Molly. No settling. Tahiti was a joke. A dream to lure the desperate and tired. And they followed. Desperate and tired. His end in Red Dead Redemption was clear to me. He still was the one in control. His last bit of control. John wasn't taking that from him. He was always sick. He was just better at pretending he cared, wasn't so obvious in his gaslighting. Those he saved felt they owed him their lives. Eventually, that wasn't enough for them to stay. But it took to long for them to realize they were trained, loyal meatshields, taught to do his dirty work to make him happy, their savior. I call Hosea "Real Dad". He doesn't call himself a father. Doesn't need to. Dutch is constantly saying "son", being called a father figure. If he really was, he wouldn't have to remind you at every turn. Him saying "son" might sound sweet, but thats the point. It got you in the heart, an easily manipulated part of us all. His golden words are guilding a hill of shit. Watch him, don't listen. That's good life advice too. If someone can speak well, if they have a silver tongue, take the message and compare it to who they are and what they do. Dutch is a fictional example of a real life monster. He's well written... Because people didn't see what was right in front of them til moments like this. No shame for that, just an opportunity to go back and recognize the signs with 20/20 hindsight.

Even a great example of Dutch clearly showing his gaslighting methods in a situation where they dont work is right after you rescue John from Prison. "You are my brother. You are my son, i was coming for you". Obviously, the biggest bullshit in that selection was him claiming he was coming because the reason he was so angry was because he didnt order John to be rescued. But you can also see him trying to make that fake "i love you really" facade. Which is it, Dutch? Is John your brother or your son? Because those two mean very different things. By saying he's his brother, its saying "we are the same level, i care for you" but then using son, ot then says "i am older and responsible for your choices, so i will make them in what i think is the best" It was as if Dutch was firing off each method as it entered his head rather than his usual calculated approach, thanks to the fact that he was now seeing he was losing control.

I think John rode with Dutch in that mission because for all the bickering and anger, he was still holding on to some loyalty to Dutch. I don't even think he is sure that Dutch betrayed him in the bank. But when he is shot in the train robbery and is left by Dutch, he not only gets betrayed again but it also confirms that Dutch left him in the bank robbery and then wanted to leave John to get hanged. This finally completely separates him from the gang and he has no shred of loyalty and confusion to Dutch. He knows what Dutch is and he knows what Dutch has done and he is no longer confused, and stands with Arthur at the last mission of the main story.

My view on Dutch is that he actually agrees with Arthur that their time in the world is over and has been for a long time, but he doesn't want to accept that. So he just keeps coming up with new ways to lash out like a cornered animal while deluding himself that there's still a way out, and his animosity to Arthur and John comes from how he can't stand that they keep reminding him of the truth. His characterization in the original Red Dead Redemption is pretty useful for discerning this, as it puts a lot of his so-called plans into context as really being just him lashing out and trying to damage the "civilized world" in whatever way he can

The irony is Dutch always was such an egoist-narcissist. Always talking about money and manipulating anyone to get to do things for him while he never delivers or offers anything back in any deal. Milton was right to stop negotiating with him or the gang, Dutch is to egoistic to just give up and as long as his spell on the other gang members is strong, he can still push his weight around. Dutch on his own is nothing, he only stood for ideas and just liked to play boss. But he barely had any leadership skill besides his silver tongue to demand loyalty.

Right now, whenever i play red dead redemption 2 again, i always wish that hosea could take the lead. He always seemed to be the one with open mind, one who wasn't crazy. It is hard for me to believe that dutch was like this always tho, as he seems at least, to care about for example, death of hosea. A cool Red Dead 3 idea could be a story about an outlaw on the run, taking refuge amongst a native American tribe and learning their ways, and then ending up helping them fight a winless battle against the US government and oil companies.
