I am from Germany and I learn English and Italian, so this is perfect for me. Unfortunately I am very bad at learning languages and there are so many other things I have to learn for school. It's just not possible for me to learn Italian as fast as Nathaniel does.

Uh... no, "confidenza" is perfectly valid, I'm not sure where you're getting this from. Maybe it's not used in your region? Here in Torino we use it with that meaning all the time. Straight from Treccani: confidènza s. f. [dal lat. confidentia «fiducia, impudenza», der. di confidens: v. confidente]. - 1. non com. Fiducia: avere c. in sé stessi, nel prossimo; infamia è un segno della pubblica disapprovazione che priva il reo de’ pubblici voti, della c. della patria (Beccaria); sicurezza: ha avuto troppa c. nel buon esito; un eccesso di c. può essere causa di sconfitta in una competizione sportiva.

@@vincenzot7246 It’s a blasphemy. Pretty commom in italian, but not much in other languages The literal meaning is something like “God is a pig” but it’s used more as a curse when you’re angry, like “for fuck sake”

I really respect you. As an Italian, I've tried to learn Dutch to get a job in the Netherlands. I was there for more than a year and I studied their idiom actively for the last 3/4 months of my permanence there, and after a lot of effort I was only able to form short sentences and unable to understand a native talking at normal speed. Then the covid struck and I was forced to go back for economical reasons. Now I am fluent in English and I've learn most of it by myself because I had some terrible teacher in school, but it took me years to be able to hold a real conversation. I really envy those who can learn many languages in such a short amount of time, I really believe that some of us are not wired to be polyglot.

He's a native Spanish speaker, that helps a lot. If you were a german speaker, you'd probably learn dutch pretty quickly too :b He spent 6 months there, and he probably doesn't have a regular job either. It's not hard...

I don't think so. I think that there are people that don't know how to learn things by themselves because of lack of experience. Once you learn the knack it becomes easier. Sometimes the language is just really hard. It depends. But I also think anyone (pretty much) can learn new things. Probably not as quick, but it's possible

I really enjoyed the 3part series on italian! I too have been learning Italian over a few years span and felt like I was losing part of it because I was not practicing but figured this self-isolation was the best time to head back into it! e ora i tuoi video mi hanno mostrato come aiutarmi ad imparare con maggiore efficienza! grazie!

The saddest part of this video is learning that Nathaniel in Italy is not a series. If you made more italian videos I would totally watch!

Ho la sensazione che Marcello abbia detto una cosa giusta e non scontata: un italiano che sente un americano anche solo provare a balbettare un po' di italiano se ne allegra. I speak five languages (English, Italian, German, Spanish and Portuguese) and it isn't true. You just think in another way because of the difference of the grammar but you obviously haven't another personality. Maybe at the beginning, when you don't know well the language you just think in an easily way, but that's obvious because you don't know words. But, anyways, it isn't true

@@konradnoises I'm not sure what those studies are explicitly saying, but I do believe that naming it "double personality" can be very misleading. I speak 4 languages, Chinese Mandarin, Swedish, English and French. When I think or speak in those languages, the language itself influences how I think and speak due to the grammatical structure, cultural ties as well as rhythm and sound. It doesn't change my core values, but it can change how I express myself.

Ermude10 that’s pretty much it. The language and culture that comes along with each one, has a huge influence in one’s behavior. I used “double personality” in quotes, just to try to sum it up, but you’re absolutely right!

Come dice Federico Fellini "una lingua diversa è una diversa visione della vita." Io e Nathaniel siamo molto fortunati per aver scelto la visione italiana. Può essere un po' difficile ma è la lingua più bella del mondo🥺 A volte dobbiamo rilassarci e non giudicarci tanto, perché è impossibile parlare sempre senza errori, anche per gli stessi italiani

Nathan you have inspired me to live in Italy and learn their beautiful language. Despite living in Ireland all my life, I have always felt this connection with Italia. fratello due correzioni al volo: 1. confidence = sicurezza (sicurezza vuol dire anche "safety" in altri contesti) confidenza = quando sei abbastanza amico con qualcuno da prenderlo per il culo 🤪 "Non dare confidenza agli sconosciuti" (lo dice la mamma ai figli piccoli); "Chi ti ha dato tutta 'sta confidenza?" quando qualcuno esagera e ti tratta come se vi conosceste da una vita, ma in realtà vi conoscete appena. Attenzione: non confonderlo con "Chi ti ha dato tutta questa conoscenza?" che può suonare simile, ma sarebbe assolutamente sbagliato 😆 "Non mi sento sicuro a..." oppure "Non me la sento di..." che può voler dire che non hai voglia di fare qualcosa o che non ti senti pronto a fare qualcosa. 2. Can = Saper (fare) May = Poter (fare) I can drive -> (Io) So guidare (verbo sapere = to know) May I come along? -> Posso (io) venire con voi/te? È normalissimo che si traduca letteralmente all'inizio, ma se vuoi fare il salto di livello, prima di pensare all'intonazione (ne abbiamo un milione e se tu hai la tua inglese it's fine, it's something personal!) prova ad imparare le frasi idiomatiche, ti faranno non solo parlare ma anche pensare come un italiano ;)

Già. Proprio due giorni fa ho scritto sul mio sito "diventa più confidente in te stessa" invece che "più sicura di te", e mi sono lamentata con il mio ragazzo, australiano, della "confidence" che ha con la sua collega. Ho vissuto troppo tempo all'estero lol.

@@chiaragiulianiniyoga Confidente e confidenza in italiano si possono usare come confidence/confidant. Sono relativamente in disuso ma sono assolutamente corretti se usati come "Diventa più fiducioso (confidente) in te stesso" oppure "Mi ci vorrebbe maggior sicurezza (confidenza) in me stesso"

Secondo me il consiglio di Giovanni è ottimo! Infatti dire "confidenza" al posto di "sicurezza" quando si parla in italiano è molto comune tra anglofon* e francofon* (avoir confiance en soi, per esempio). Io stessa, avendo vissuto e studiato per anni in contesti francofoni, dicevo spesso "confidenza" al posto di "sicurezza" quando parlavo in italiano. Ovviamente non è sbagliato ma di certo dire "essere sicura di se stessa" ti fa sembrare molto più parlante nativa che dire "avere confidenza in se stessa" 🤣

WOW !! I've seen just a couple of your videos and I'm impressed . I wish I can learn to speak a language that fast . English is my second language and it took a couple of years to learn it . But I'm a true believer that it's never too late and a person it's never too old to learn something as long you want to do it !!

Hey man, I think your italian is really good for someone who's been in Italy for just three months. Don't be too harsh on yourself! I had a russian friend whose english was far worst than yours after three whole years here. I love the passion and care you put in each one of the things you learn and your videos. The discussion about being perfect in a language reminds me of the quote from Imre Lakatos: "Triviality and certainty are the kinderkrankheiten of knowledge." The idea of speaking a language perfectly is like being certain of a fact. The better one knows a topic the less certain one becomes of its facts. The better one knows a language the more one find there there is still to learn.

I moved to Italy 2 months ago, able to speak close to nothing; watching this and understanding everything genuinely motivates me to keep pushing towards fluency. Grazie mille per essere una grande fonte d'ispirazione per me.

@@KING-kv6cv My opinion is a bit different than the other two comments here above. I believe he has zero accent. I would never be able to say that he's American while speaking in Italian. Vocabulary is also impressively rich and he's able to use several idiomatic expressions. Really the only thing he could improve is practice: he obviously sounds a bit robotic, fragmented. That could be improved just with keep talking Italian. He did a GREAT job.

@@KING-kv6cv He doesn't sound like a native, but this doesn't really matter. He doesn't pause like an Italian would do and some vowels and also consonants are different from typical Italian accents. But that is not that relevant. You'll always keep something which will reveal the language you're speaking is not your native one, so amen. The important thing is grammar and vocabulary, and he did an amazing job considering that he's speaking a Romance language and that he can handle slang phrases, and I admire him so so so much. He did an excellent job and has brilliant language skills. Things will keep improving for his Italian and I wish I had his abilities in English.

I developed my love of languages relatively late in life and it definitely doesn't come as easily as it did when I was younger! I spoke English and Cantonese growing up, learned French in school (nowhere close to fluent), and am now trying to add Spanish and Russian into the mix. Wish me luck!!
