My GMRS Repeater & How I Connected The GMRS Repeater To The Internet - My Vertex VXR-7000 Repeater

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

A quick overview of the new (to me) GMRS repeater that I have been using for a while now, a Vertex (now owned by Motorola) VXR-7000. I also go over my GMRS base antenna setup, what kind of coax I use for the repeater and the range of the repeater. As an added bonus I also give a brief overview of how I connected the GMRS repeater to the internet.
You can see the Tram 1486 GMRS Base Station Antenna that I use here: www.buytwowayradios.com/tram-...
You can read how to connect to my GMRS repeater via the Internet using the Zello App, here: www.notarubicon.com/zello-gmr...

@@jmr it’s a fine coax for base use. For everyone else who might wonder why you shouldn’t use it on a repeater, it’s the dual shield of foil and braid. The inconsistent spots where the two touch inside the jacket can cause intermodulation distortion (intermod). That doesn’t mean the coax ‘won’t work’ it means it ‘could cause’ interference which maybe affects your receive or maybe transmits that interference and causes another nearby receiver to hear it. Because the points inside where the braid and foil touch can vary, it may or not cause noticeable issues that can be observed without test equipment. So for base station use it’s not an issue because you are either transmitting or receiving, not both at the same time like you would in duplex service (on a repeater). To summarize, can you use it on a repeater? Yes. Will it cause issues? Maybe. Does it work for the purposes of this video? Obviously. Is it a good idea? No. Why gamble when you know there exists a possibility of immediate or future issues. I would have used RG-8 for this short of a run.

For it has been told throughout the ages, that the Valley Of The Bowl was blessed by a glorious and invisible radio blanket of safety. Village dwellers sang and danced to celebrate the eternal emissions created by Xenu - harvested by the Mighty Tram Of Randy and forged for the people through his MotaRolla. The Egg Spurtz, frightened by the power manifested in the valley skies, slithered with great haste to their stones and boulders - never to troll again. May Randy Be Praised.

Loving the GMRS content, recently applied for my license. Been a ham almost 10 years but I’m very interested in developing GMRS in my area as there are currently no users or repeaters that I know of. Love all the content, can’t understand a lot of these other hams in your channel hating and being a band policeman. I say do what makes you happy and what you enjoy with your hobby. I’ve been experimenting with VHF and UHF analog and digital modes more thanks to this channel. Hoping to eventually make a gmrs repeater and build a system for local licensed users!

A glad ham/new gmrs here. My 2 cents worth...LMR400 coax on the uhf band for 5o watts or less like in your home setup is really quite fine. To spend the money for hard line heliax or better for your setup in my opinion would never get you any noticeable increase in performance. Hel' you're located above a valley on a hill pointed right down at the entire landscape and everything on it. How much better of an arrangement could anyone want. Ya...LMR400 berry berry good. By the way...i enjoy your ytube channel very much and you are a great teacher. Thanks for taking the time to share. Cheers from tennessee

If only you knew the trouble I went through programming that thing. I had to get the cable that was buried in the storage room, then I forgot I needed a driver so we had to find that for the vertex cable which took 30 minutes, then the CPS kept setting it to narrow band, and then it started raining on me and deadhead. Ohhh what fun that was but it’s cool seeing that box again and glad it’s working and rock solid

Thank You, Sensei, for keeping it real, and straight to the point! I'm definitely not one of those, "_______", out there, to lay claim I know everything about GMRS, since I've been around it since 1978. As a matter of fact, there were no options for linking repeaters, nor utilizing the internet to talk, an unlimited amount of "fars", as much as , ten years ago. You've become my advocate, for not wanting to achieve the simplest of, Happy or Sad Amateur Licenses, over the past 51 yrs., and a day, of my life. (Turned 66, yesterday. 🤫) GMRS, UHF, Commercial DMR, and other options such as, network radio, have become a way of life for me. It's also become a less expensive options of achieving the, "fars", I need to, "talk". This has become a hobby for me and not a full blown, keeping up with the Jones' continuous investment. Keep the, "affiliate link(s) below", coming! Perhaps, a video on how you linked up the, "Ranchino", repeater network, is in order... WRCY565, appreciates both, Chris, the real, "oh nevermind" him, we know his title, and you Sensei, for educating Me, your favorite, subscribed viewer.

Dear Diary, So I've been watching this guy on KZread yack about GMRS. As a result, I now have a Kenwood TK-860H installed in my '05 "grocery getter, otherwise known as a Ford Focus wagon, two Wouxun 805g's (affiliate link below), a Motorola HT1250 doped up for GMRS usage and RX only for area emergency services. And since I too want to be like my GMRS-brother, I just snapped up a factory fresh Vertex Standard EVX-R70 for a song (couldn't find a 7000 on eBay that the Sellers didn't think was constructed out of gold). I rolled the dice in getting the right software and programming cable, I literally held my breath when downloading the codeplug for the first time. Everything went perfect, had the repeater configured in under 5 minutes. Now it's time for the remaining necessities to get this bad boy on the air. Randy, you're rocking the duplexer that came with your Vertex, do you still recommend the one from buytwowayradios that you showcased with the dual 1000g setup? Thanks for all that you do, keep 'em coming. WROQ941...Clear.

Glad you threw the buy once cry once out the window and went with why have one when you can have 2 at twice the price. Your series on repeaters is supper helpful. I'm almost ready to install one at my home. I'm curious, what is your understanding of the rules governing GMRS repeaters on the internet. I ask because it was my understanding from the FCC rules that you couldn't do that with GMRS but could with HAM. What are you using to announce the base station's (your) call sign auto-magically? Again it's my understanding that a repeater must announce it's self every so often, just like a normal station.

I've also taken commercial level classes and workshops on antenna grounding and across the board, the consensus is... understand the theory, design a situationally practical system using best practices. Every site is different, has different challenges and subject to different environmental conditions. There is no "right answer", universal solutions, or hard rules.

I have a VX-7000 and mistakenly plugged in a Motorola microphone which shorted out the logic board. Do you know where i could get that repaired?

The experts would most likely say use Heliax and N- connectors to cut down on loss. But for your situation LMR-400 is fine. I use it for now and it works well but we need too extend out our "fars" due to one of our group moving out of our current coverage capabilities and also the local club south running roughshod over us. We plan on Heliax and 14 element yagi's and simply Simplex one of the 2 remaining repeater channels with legal limit options. As our local "some people" to the south do everything they can to bother us almost every night(we do use input and output tones mind you) since our friend is moving ESE of them we figure yagi's will reduce their ability to hit us hard even though they somehow manage to run 150Watt repeaters on GMRS and LMR 100watt radios as well and not have issues. So we will go beyond lmr-400 coax not because its no good but we wish to stay fully legal on our side and get max performance out of our equipment. I liked how you explained how your antenna performs and explained your coverage vector which I dont think many understand how different types of antennas propagate differently. It seems many believe the bigger the better on GMRS. Much like the old CB mudducks preach very often. That might be a video worth putting up explaining what antenna is best for certain options on GMRS. Antennas for local repeaters, terrain type, and long range Simplex for examples. Would love to know where you get your shirts too. Love your vids and sarcasm, keep up the great work!!! Dave- The Old Fogey

You setup a repeater for people to use for free? That's just not to be and the experts will tell you so. I'm just now getting into all this and it's so cool. I don't see any repeaters around me but I will have to look deeper into this. KS being 100 years behind the times as the experts tell me I may have to do like you and just put one up for non experts only to use. LOL Your sarcasm cracks me up every time i watch one of your shows.

Randy, Could you go into detail how to hook up the repeater to Yello? or Provide a link that is not written in "expert" language. I'd love to do that here at my location. Again, awesome video.. as always.

Also may I ask why you chanted to the Motorola repeater? Where there issues with the KG-1000 setup?

Assembling the KG1000 repeater was a fun learning experience but two KG-1000's strung together is a large, unwieldy mess of wires, especially when you consider that to prevent desense, you have to keep the radios several feet apart. A single, purpose-made repeater in a box is more practical and performs better.
