My Giant motorized Aether Wing Kayle cosplay - ElminsCosplay

Dude the things cosplayer can make astounds me. Amazing job, you should totally enter some cosplay contests with these!

Unfortunately it was never quite to the standard I wanted it, hence I didn't enter any. Largely because the shear volume of things that went into it meant I had to compromise. Although I have been told by several people who actually run them that I'd pretty much just straight up win. I will be entering some with my next though.
Wow... just wow!!!! Your so talented. I saw a girl at comic con one year and she was all steampunk themed and she had enormous electronic wings and I was blown away

Thanks! These are literally some of the biggest in the world any mechanical costume wings, it was officially measured at around 14ft (426cm) tip to tip and fully extended. The camera doesn't give a good sense of scale.
this looks cool
THIS IS SICK
Good job !!!
I have no idea what this is from, but this is probably the coolest prop that I have ever seen ever. Great work
Imagine without the dramatic music, the awkwardness (its so awesome btw!!!!)

hello, do you have a facebook page ? I'm starting a cosplay of Mercy (in Overwatch) and I would like to use the same system for the wings than yours with Kayle, but I would like to know how you did it, and how much it costed to you ? :)
@elminz
7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, FB.com/ElminsCosplay . The design I used was engineered from the ground up for this particular one, I'd probably do it a bit differently for smaller wings. There's some construction photos and info in the FAQ. The total cost for the whole cosplay was around £1000, but there's a surprising amount of material and parts in the wings, essentially 3-5 cosplays worth alone. The video doesn't give a good sense of scale, but it's REALLY big.
WOW!!!
just WOW fuching WOW
This is so cool!! Anything that you could give as advice to use or work with for someone planning to make wings that move as well? I'm making a costume for a D&D character of mine, and while it would be cool to have a similar motion with it going closed at the back, to closed at the sides, and then to open at the sides. Though it would be set up in a way that uses a system that kinda moves together with feathers... I have around a year to do all of this, and I may end up keeping it still instead of allowing it to occasionally move, yet it's just a touch that would make it so much more amazing

I did mention some a number of about the wings it in my FAQ (linked in description), but do be aware this design is so extreme for a few reasons that anything would be notably different. If I was to summarise on key points though: Keep them as light as possible; Harness is really important; Motors requires more torque than you'd guess; The difficulty/cost/unreliability multiplies for every bit of mechanics you add.

elminz Sorry, I'm just being dumb tonight and didn't check the description, ahh! But thank you so much for the advice. I was wondering how important the harness was, but I'll definitely keep that in mind. And try to figure out if it's easier to find light foam that isn't too floppy, or of it's just too interface every single fabric feather I'll use.. Oh well, it'll be something I can use to multiple conventions for sure if I do it well. Again, thank you!

No prob. I can answer some general questions through my page, but these are very different to most wings so it's of limited use.
what did you use to turn each section? incredible btw!
@elminz

Michelle Milgram There's one motor in the backpack section acting as a winch that has strong string running into the pivots. There's more info in the FAQ in description.
If it took a superhero that long to spread his or her wings, I bet they would have been zapped to death in an instant!

Love it now lets go for version 2.0 with electric jet pack n big millions mile range battery
OMG HOW EVEN OMG OMG OMG
amazing brot.......you must to do cosplay of saint seiya
wow
Awesome! what I am wondering about is the balance of the wings when you wear the suit and have the wings folded backward like that, and, looking back almost 2 years later, what you would change in the design, if you were to remake it.
@elminz
6 жыл бұрын
The main failure with the wings folded back was actually the harness. The harness was an afterthought and it ended up being a bit too unstable to use when folded back. Also for my upcoming cosplay (PROJECT:Kayle) the wings will rest more vertically from the main frame so the center of gravity isn't so far out. The wings are also smaller as these are impractical as hell. As far as other changes go, there's well over 100 different improvements. Part the reason I've been apprehensive about posting tutorials on this is that there's so much information going into it, it's hard to know where to start or how to organize it.
@elminz

Also, I knowing took a lot of shortcuts to get this built. It lacks bearings, wire pretensioners, proper wire guides, proper electrical safety, has too many bolts/nuts, takes too long to assemble, etc etc. This was the first time I did 95% of this, so the shear volume of things to learn is immense. Even things you wouldn't think of became issues. It worked, but "working" and "working well and reliably" are totally different things.
@lalythil
6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I figured that was the case with the amount of hours ;) I think tutorials on how to achieve this might not be very easy to do, but perhaps, if you'd made schematics during/before building, those might be useful for future builders. Once again, awesome build!

Those look like they would be in overwatch
Watch out Jessica Nigri might steal your prop and call her idea
Wear it!!!

Hi, I know this is super late but I really want to do a Mercy cosplay and I was wondering if you have an actual tutorial on how to do the wings. I looked at your FB but didn't find it exactly. :)
@elminz
6 жыл бұрын
Hiya, Sorry I don't have a tutorial for this design. My FAQ does explain some of the details, but due to the extreme requirements it's very different to other designs.
No words
Oh bloody 'ell how??
Do you by any chance have either s tutorial, or know of a good one? I'm looking into making wings very similar to this!
@elminz
6 жыл бұрын
I've been meaning to do a sort of tutorial, but this was my first and I learnt a lot along the way, so I would do it a bit differently this time around. Also, when things get this size (Recently won a Guinness world record for largest mechanical cosplay wings), the design and considerations get a huge amount higher. I put an FAQ on my FB page, but the design would be drastically different for smaller wings with different constraints. When I do a tutorial, it would be more of a general guide.

elminz thanks! My wings I plan on will be a larger pair as well. But not as big as yours lol
can you make them move like 10x as fast and more natural? xD
@elminz
8 жыл бұрын
+YiaM - ワイアム I could make them move quite a bit faster with another motor and other modifications. This was my first attempt at even making a costume, if it was even my 2nd one, I could have got that design better. Note, the backpack section is actually super small considering lifting a 4m wing span.
@YiaMdj

elminz That's very true. I'm not an engineer or anything but i'd figure using some kind of hydraulic system would work well.
talk about mercy mains xD (jk I am one)
......😱
Nice one but show as how its warks
Like, this is cool and all, but god damn is it loud.
FIRST COSPLAY!!!!!???? D8
i wish i could make that, but im to stupid to

Most things look way more complex than they are. Its only when you break them down and learn about the parts that it becomes simple to understand everything as a whole. Granted this project was a 1000 step learning process, nothing was super advanced on it's own.
Hey wanna give it to me when your finished with it? XD I want it so bad
How?

I'm afraid not. It's too expensive to ship (>$1000 to a lot of locations) and it's high maintenance. I'm building something that will be shippable as my next one.

Electrical Schematic? please ahahaha ^^
@elminz

+Royale Gaviola I don't have an electrical schematic for it, I mostly just knew what was going in there and put it in.... turns out this is a horrible idea. My wiring is the equivalent of throwing it all into a bag, shaking it up, and pushing in a metal frame. I cover some of the parts I use on my FB page

The wings aren't for sale, but I'm working towards building new ones and then fitting this design onto the new frame in future. This particular pair of wings are just too expensive to ship, take a long time to build, and difficult to use/maintain. It's 426cm (~14ft) across at max, which is absolutely giant.
