My First Greta Van Fleet Experience! Vocal ANALYSIS of "Highway Tune" and the new Robert Plant!

For over a year, I assumed the lead singer of this band was named Greta Van Fleet, and she was the female version of Robert Plant. Color me surprised when I learned his name is Josh, and his sound is REMARKABLE! This analysis really put me on my heels, and I cannot wait to dive deeper into their catalogue!
Join professional opera singer Elizabeth Zharoff, as she listens to Greta Van Fleet for the first time, performing "Highway Tune".

Here's the problem. The singer tried to say, "oh we are influenced by Black Sabbath, Deep Purple.." and NEVER mentioned the ONLY influence that actually mattered. It's literally watered down Jimmy Page riffs and a Robert Plant wannabe. If he at least admitted their influence it would have been better, but to try and say Zepplin wasn't one of the influences is asinine, ignorant, and wrong.

What really seals Joshua as a "new Robert Plant" is that he allows his voice to be one of the instruments. Plant did that. Steven Tyler did that. Part of the reason for that criticism is that somebody (label, management or the group themselves) decided that they needed to HEAVILY lean into those comparisons to the point where it almost felt like they were banking on it to bring in the older crowd, rather than relying on their own merits. There seemed to be a noticeable shift in what they were recording and the way they were dressing when you compare Highway Tune, Black Smoke Rising to their newer stuff. These guys have other-worldly talent, in particular Jake who I think is one of the few great talents to come along on the guitar in the last 20 years. Gretna Van Fleet is a resident of Frankenmuth, MI, the small town where they grew up. Their parents has tons of vinyl and so did their grandparents. Their dad is in a band and they grew up around guitars. Josh the lead singer and Jake on guitar are twins, Sam on bass or keyboards is their younger brother and Danny on drums is a friend since childhood. They started writing and performing in their early years. They had more influences besides LZ, and Robert Plant has made complimentary comments when asked about Josh and the band as a whole. I recommend checking out Heat Above, Broken Bells and other songs from their album. They’ll be releasing another album soon.

If you want to inject some of the best Robert Plant performance into your ears I highly recommend *Babe I'm Gonna Leave You* from 1969 Danmarks Radio recording. One of the best live performances ever recorded. And if you're into discovering more new bands with and "old" sound, I highly recommend *Alabama Shakes* - Don't Wanna Fight. They started as a Zeppelin cover band, so it's kinda obvious where their 'sound' came from. The singer has a lot of influence from Plant and the guitar work is DEFINITELY reminiscent of Page's work. If only they had a rhythm section like Zeppelin. But few can ever equal the driving force that was Bonham and Jones.

I honestly don't get the hate for these kids. I'm middle aged, been listening to 60's rock all my life. Do they sound like Led and other Brit Invasion bands? Yes. The members of the Brit Invasion bands literally took their sound from blues music and sped it up. Every style and generation takes from earlier ones. And as evidenced by Charlie Watts' death, and just days ago Jeff Beck, that generation of rockers are sadly dying. GVF are keeping the sound/style alive with a new take! I love them for that!

The problem for me is that it’s just too on the nose and completely lacks originality which takes me out of it. It’s one thing to have many influences and borrow heavily from them, which Zeppelin clearly did, but it’s another thing entirely to imitate every aspect of one bands sound to the point where you could place your track on one of their albums and have new listeners to both bands unable to tell the difference. In other words, these guys seem to literally only have one influence. The vocal pitch, the lyrics, the guitar tone, the main riff, etc., etc. it’s all Led Zeppelin with nothing else sprinkled in. It’s almost like they weren’t allowed to listen to anyone else growing up and were forced to watch the song remains the same on repeat for a decade before they started their own band. Hell, the singer even goes out of his way to imitate Robert Plants mannerisms down to specific stances, poses, and hand gestures. The guitar player physically plays his guitar like Jimmy Page and solos in the same style. I will say this for them, I acknowledge that, in and of itself, it takes talent to successfully imitate the greatest band of all time while writing original music in the process, but it’s still a cheap imitation at the end of the day (they’ll graduate from a cheap imitation to an expensive one when they write another rain song or no quarter). Anyway, if I want to hear Zeppelin, I’ll play Zeppelin. What I want to hear is a band influenced by Zeppelin that applies what they learned from them to create their own sound and identity. I mean these guys literally used to be a Zeppelin cover band. What else is there to say?

It is the craziest vocal thing I have EVER laid eyes on. In Bangor I was standing there at center rail with my jaw hanging. Then later we found out he did it with a BROKEN EAR DRUM. What?!!! There was another really insane one in AC where I think he might have even hit a higher note. They grew up listing to old blues records. Their father is a huge fan of the genre and even performs with a blues band. He plays harmonica. And, yes, he has taken stage with the boys to perform some blues numbers. He's damned good. But the boy grew up listening to his record collection. So their musical influences are a lot like the bands of the 60s and 70s. From the start, the got dinged by Zep fans for sounding like a "cover band". The first time I heard this song I wondered if it was a lost Zep track. It's not like they grew up in a vacuum. Yes, they heard Zep songs and naturally those songs became some of their many influences. Same as Zep built their songs on a foundation of blues and grew from that, GVF has also evolved. Their more recent music is definitely different and wholly their own. So, I think the whole comparison to Zep that this song written when they were in their early teens should no longer color peoples expectations. BTW, the bass player also does keyboards on some of their songs and uses bass pedals to fill in the foundation for the rhythm. At the risk of another Zep comparison, John Paul Jones, the bassist for Zep, also plays keyboards.

If im not mistaken, the intro they play here (which im completely sure is not original from "Highway Tune"), is the chorus intro riff of "Brave New World", the 9th track of their next album "Anthem of The Peaceful Army".
