MY FIRST DAY WITH WIDGET THE WHITE BELLIED CAIQUE (So Much Progress!!)
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
Meet Widget, an 11 month old white bellied caique who belonged to one of my patrons who could no longer keep her and asked me to take her on as a project bird until I could locate a forever home for her. (Widget has been legally surrendered to Ronie's For the Love of Birds Parrot Rescue in Sandy, UT whom I work closely with.)

She is a baby, white bellied caiques have black spots on their heads when they're babies and then loose them after the first moult (I have a caique, I'm not making this up hehe). Also the screaming sounds like the baby screams, mine just stopped doing that when she turned 6 months old or so and now she barely screams although she makes the most hilarious sounds 😂

Widget screaming reminds me of dogs I’ve worked with that have separation anxiety. Where they will bark and cry and carry on until you give them that attention they think they need. It’s difficult to teach any animal with reinforced separation anxiety to “break” the bad habit and it can be so exhausting. I know it’s not their fault and they don’t know any better but I can’t imagine trying to help them out of that habit with an animal as intelligent as a parrot! I wish you the best in helping her out of that anxious mindset! She is such a sweet bird from what I can see in this video! I love watching and learning different training techniques and how they can even help other animal trainers to understand and work with their animal! You are truly an amazing person and your videos are so helpful and informative! ❤️(edit: also your children are so sweet with the birds it makes me cry! It reminds me so much of myself when I was little and raising chickens😭)

Caiques will be interested in anything. There amazing little birds.
Yes a caique project bird. I can't wait to see her journey.
I had a screaming conure that I "inherited" from a roommate. She was the loudest bird I've ever lived with and I got her to cool it the same way, ignoring her until she was quiet for a minute or two, then showing lots of affection and positive reinforcement. Stretched it out to 5 minutes before I acknowledged it, and after a month or two, she was the quietest bird I've ever lived with! She'd call to me softly when she woke up and only screamed when another conure in the same apartment building got going. She was getting on in age when I got her, had been passed from owner to owner until she came with me when I moved out. I had her for 5 years, really don't know how old she was. My little Peanut was such a joy, she gave me the bird bug, I've had at least one ever since. I've only had cockatiels for 30+ years (current ones are 12), seeing Widget makes me want another "big little" bird! I bet my two tiels would wonder how that weird looking tiel got so big! 😂

My 11 year old cockatiel Baby is very loving towards my conure Skittles, but Skittles is ALWAYS in his cage when Baby is out. Skittles is rambunctious and playful and LOVES to "wrassle", but he plays rough, including some vigorous play biting. He could easily hurt or even kill Baby unintentionally.

If that's how you really feel, that might be a good instinct, but know that people online fear-monger A LOOOOT. I remember when I was on dog forums some years back, and I had nearly convinced myself to never get a dog again, because the people there have such impossibly high standards, if you're anything less than perfect, you're a "terrible owner" - at least that's how they make you feel. And with parrots it's even worse, because they have this huge "they are terrible pets and should really all be in the wild"-image. Well they're not terrible pets or millions of people wouldn't own them, but they ARE high-maintenance.
@peepsicle

@@rosiehawtrey oh lol, I didn’t realize that this was a snake. I thought it was a species of bird. I’ve heard of peoples birds getting eggbound from producing too many eggs, which is what I meant by the eggs being a problem. Well, that and having a bunch of the animal you might not be sure what to do with, if you didn’t intend to become a breeder.
Wow! So cute. I love how caiques hop around and walk backward.
Just in case anyone is on the fence about the pellets.. I thought my conure might not take to them immediately because they have the strong smell of greens but after about 2 days of offering, she has started decimating them. And now her cage smells like a freshly cut field of grass. Previously on fruity blend pellets with dried apple. Totally worth it.

You are lucky to let her out straight away. We have other birds in same space, so rescue budgies with scaly face mite have to be treated, before interaction. One also had chest infection, now on antibiotics, that is fun x2 a day. Another is at vet having a way too tight leg band removed.

Yay! So jealous, I want one so bad 😭 And you know the screaming is bad when a sun conure owner(of 3)has a rough time dealing with the noise from a completely different species. I can only imagine how much louder it is, in person! 😰

She is so precious! I love caiques! Nothing matches their energy and goofiness! 💚💛🧡🤍
My very first foster bird was a caique. She was separated from her buddy for hormonal reasons, and we were told she was quiet, tame, and fun. We had to give her back after 2 days because the screaming hurt my dog's ears so bad she tried to run away 3 times. Still feel bad about that, but it was our first bird ever so I know I can't be too mad at myself. If we got her now, I know it probably would've subsided through training and just time. So I feel your pain Jamie 😂 good on you for sticking with it

Why dont you get one? I got two in the last month..
It must be incredibly scary for these intelligent creatures. I hate how easy people give up on them. One day I would love to rescue one. Currently I have 4 dogs and it is a bit chaotic. Xox
I had this same scenario happen. Previous owners "loved him so much, couldn't get him to eat anything other than seed, he was a tailfeather mutilator and apparently the vet said that just 'happens', and he did best alone." He eats a chop mix, his tailfeathers grew out, his behavioral issues are gone, and he's a total doll.
