WHY BIRDS BITE! | Top 2 Reasons Parrots BITE Their Owners

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

In today's video I am talking about the 2 reasons pet birds bite us! The #1 reason is either ignoring their subtle signs of body language OR not being able to read that body language in the first place! When the subtle signs go ignored on a consistent basis, birds learn not to bother with them anymore and go straight to a biting response.

One of our rescue conures, Olive, has clearly had her biting pre-cursors ignored in her previous homes. Her body language to warn of a bite is so subtle now that we have to watch her so carefully so we set her up for success! Great video with important tips! 🦜

Same with our budgie, Snow! We also think that Snow might be partially blind, so she tends to be more fearful of the things around her since she can’t see them clearly. It’s really difficult to figure out whether she really wants the treat you’re holding or is scared of it and about to lunge to bite your hand.

I have an african grey too. He's a rescue, 14 years old, a plucker and has aggression issues. He never bit me because I always recognize his warnings and the last warning is a loud clicking sound that he does with his beak. If you don't take a step back after this sound you'll probably get bit.

Yeah half my time is spent un-teaching my rescues that biting is their only option. The quaker parrot I’ve had the longest is getting there, she doesn’t bite much anymore, just song friendly nibbles that I don’t mind too much, and I’m very proud of her.

Maybe you can answer my question I wrote above? How to make your bird use warning signs again before biting after he stopped using them, because you or a previous owner, overlooked them in the past. That's what I missed in this video.

My Indian Ringneck was abused by his previous owners, and I think he only knows biting as a last resort. Though he does often bite when showing positive signs, such as happy vocalizations. How can I unteach him so he knows I’ll listen to his signs? I do my best to respect his space, but sometimes he comes over to me when I’m just sitting nearby and he’ll bite me hard enough for me to bleed.

As soon as I saw the title to this video, I said “out loud”....birds bite because that’s how they talk to us humans. They are fed up with some type of behavior that is going on around them, and they’ve had enough. So, that’s how they talk to us, they bite when they need us to really listen! Chomp, chomp on whatever they can get! Our, fingers, heads, arms, etc. Thank you Jamieleigh, another great learning video!👍🏻👍🏻NJ🦜

I always tell people. It is key to read their body language, and the only way you will learn that overtime, is spending a lot of time with them, watching and observing their interaction with different things and surroundings. Hormonal biting is definitely more apparent in my bird, but there is so much more to it. Great video 😊

I'm so glad I found this channel before I got a budgie a few years back, only in the first week I managed to get a serious bite in my nose, and I immediately recognized what I did wrong. It's never happened again, he didn't need to. Pecks do sometimes happen though, subtle signs can be tough to read inside the cage (especially for people who aren't me), but never a full on bite, so I'm pleased with that

My bird has been biting the back of my neck and it really hurts, and I didn’t understand why. I finally discovered that he found a new mole I didn’t know I had and was “grooming” me. Because of that I’m now going to go get it checked. Thank you for the info about not keeping a space in your home off limits. We have a room that has a giant mirror that we’ve made off limits, and he is OBSESSED with going in there (plus it has a great echo that he loves.) Your talk has prompted me to get a curtain to put over it so we can let him in there

He is a rescue that i had known for two years and finally just bought off the owner to bring him home. He was super cage bound and now he still prefers it but will come out and climb around his house, tru to climb down his house, and whwn he feels like it fly to me and hang out with me for a little while. He's like a completwly different bird!

My male rehomed green cheek conures biting was accidentally reinforced in his previous home. He (generally) didn’t give a warning and even associated the phrase step up with biting. He would tell me step up so I would go over to attempt step up just so he could bite me. Learned fast not to attempt that lol. I’ve put loads of work into him and while it’s still a process we’ve made major progress. He had been clipped and working on flight training honestly helped loads as he didn’t feel as though biting was his only option. He still occasionally gets some good bites in but it’s not nearly as bad as the training we’ve done has helped a crazy amount!

She doesn't typically latch though. And if I lean back she will rush my face and start nibbling at my lip, nose, and eyelids and if I dont stop her(I do) she starts trying to regurgitate. I’m in the early process of diet conversion (your organic seed mix) and trying to associate myself positively and just really observing my birds but I’ve noticed they don’t really get along and are constantly competing with each other and getting in scuffles... should I give it more time or should they go in separate cages? I have had a buggie for 3 or 4 months and he just died last month i loved him very much I was not edadcated enough to have one I did not know anything about them AT ALL I have liked birds a very long time I love them so much. I have been doing as much research on parrots and bird care thinking about all the things it takes to own a happier healthy bird I am turning into a bird I do that much research I have been researching for 4 days non stop I research for hours on end .I have been looking at all bird breeds and have found non to fit in my family . My neighbour got a new bird she found her flying around and she was not chipped or anything so they put up flyers and no show up of the owners it's been a few years now and they still have her she is a Bobble yellow headed Amazon parrot and her name is polly she is super friendly .I decided to look into them and do research on them and I think I found the one . I have a big family with 3 siblings and I have 3 dogs a rabbit and tortoise. I have fitted in the time I will be able to spent with each one and the bird sholed get around 3 or 4 hours flying time if good eith being handled I woled probably spend 6 or 5 hours time with it .I have do lots of research on them and I seen that they get very hormonal and aggressive I woled love to know what age they get to that stage at and if I got it older woled it be grown out of that stage??. 🍓🐦

My young cockatiel Lui doesn't bite at all besides a little nip suddenly during head scrittches, and then afterwards he usually asks for more petting. If he bites, the scrittches are over, but this happens alot. What I've done is simply only give pets in little 5-6 second sections and let him ask for more. I also choose when the pets end -before he gets frustrated. We have longer, happier cuddle times this way, but I wish he'd naturally give me some sort of hint of his discomfort before nipping. He's really good at communicating nicely in all other aspects.

I've had my budgies (5-6mo old) for 2-3 months now, and they were from the pet store (I didn't buy it but the responsibility of taking care of them landed on me), thus they were extremely afraid of humans in the beginning. Now they tolerate going on my hands to eat treats (only when very hungry), but otherwise they are scared of EVERYTHING! New toys, new food. meaning they will not eat anything that isn't seeds and millet. I've tried eating fresh food in front of them, leaving it in their food bowl, mixing seeds with pellets, nothing is working. I want to get my birds a better diet but at the moment it is near impossible as the birds are scared of everything...

This video is exactly what I need. One of my two budgies bites quite often and both birds always fly to our degus' cage but are not allowed to because the biting budgie once bit the degu's tail off 😢 they are just not interested in treats when they fly there so we always have to cover the cage with blankets to protect our other animals. Now I'm wondering whether I have to take the degus to a different place and while the cage is empty let the budgies out so the cage can loose its magic?...

Well I made a pizza last month and didn't realize I had a teflon pan in the bottom of the oven . It killed all my budgies, I took Chi chi to the vet she stayed there two days on oxygen. When she came home she seemed OK but she was not her usual self then she stated loosing weight. I took her two the vet and I found out her longs were heavily damaged. the vet couldn't do anything for her. I took her home and she died two days later in my hands. Now that my baby is gone I don't know what to do my home is so empty now. Thank you for great videos.

I have a question, so my GCC does these little wing twitches when I pet him (or snuggle with him) for a while. Is this normal, or is this hormones?

My new budgie (2 weeks) has recently bonded with me. It has just become attached to being by my mouth. It didn't get as much time with me today and has begun biting my lip. Now is it much more aggressive or agitated with it's toys too. I'm not sure what's up.

Can you possibly do a video regarding taking care of birds with injuries? I have an African grey who has an already compromised toe on his foot. I rescued him from a previous home where he suffered quite a bit of abuse. He HATES hands but allows me to pick him up from the floor only as a last resort. But he's doing good overall. He has problems with wooden perches because he can't grip as well but he loves just roosting on the couch but does well on his big perch in his cage.

2 out of 3 of budgies will having "crazy biting attacks" while their perched on my hand and I'm literally not doing. They get all hyper, start flapping their wings very fast, and just biting on my nails, fingers, or knuckles. It doesn't hurt usually but I wonder if this is hormonal?

One of mine do the same thing. He flies to me (uncalled sometimes) and does it, so I don’t think his scared. Suddenly he gets “flirty” so I think it could be hormones too, but it’d be nice to know for sure.

Since I bonded more with one of my budgies, often he comes on my arm, while I'm fetching their food and just does little random bites in my skin. Or I'm feeding them and he jumps on my arm or hand an bites here or there and walks on, doing his normal stuff. It's so out of nothing always. Just like, he comes to me, does a bite and check for food or vice versa. I don't know, if he is mad, if I'm not fast enough, to give him something or if the other bird block the feeding bowl/hand, but sometimes I realy can't find any reason and he also does nothing. No signs with his feathers, no sound ... I then actually feel like my skin would be made of millet.

So I’m bringing home my 3 month old ringneck spend the last month bonding but she still bites randomly and I believe it’s due to her being a baby still but how do I correct this it’s just when she sits on my hand or if she’s on my shoulder she goes for my ear!?

Help Jamie! My quaker parrot keeps biting at her metal armband and she's starting to crack her beak! one side of her beak is growing because she always bites and rubs the one side, and now theres a dent where her beak has chipped away from her constant biting of the armband. I'm at a loss, the vet says she needs to keep the band on but she just won't stop. I'm worried she will crack it severely. Is it worth keeping the band on?

My little gcc bites a lot, although I can usually manage the reasons mentioned in this video. The bites that flummox me are the ones when he is excited about what my hands are doing or holding. I just got nailed this morning when I was holding a paper cup that he wanted. He also gets all wound up when I am washing dishes, pouring coffee, drinking from a can. Any suggestions?

My macaw does this little "anxiety dance" and starts screaming sometimes and I haven't been able to figure out why because he usually does it when something is freaking him out but when everything has been the same all day I can't seem to figure out why he freaks out. His "anxiety dance" consists of him hanging from his cage or tree stand by his beak and flapping his wings while sometimes screaming sometimes not. I don't know what is triggering this behavior so I don't know how to help him :( (He is a 6 year old jubilee macaw)
