    Alright guys. I think it's finally happened. AC has gone off the deep end and started having two way conversations with his ants, the ants have taken control of him. He's no longer an entomologist...he's an antomologist.

    Speaking of the ants being smarter than we think, biologists recently found that honeybees may be able to dream, have short and long term memory, and the capacity to learn.

  • @achristiananarchist2509

    @achristiananarchist2509

    Жыл бұрын

    That bees can learn and have long and short term memory has been well known for a while. That's why they hover over flowers and stare at them. They are memorizing the appearance and location of that flower so they can find it again later. The dreaming thing is super interesting though. I hadn't heard anything about that. I wonder how you'd even assess dreaming in an insect. I can't imagine they engage in REM and their brain is so different from ours that I'm not sure you could take for granted that activity during sleep is dreaming. I feel like I'm about to fall down a google rabbit hole...

    I mean Asian Giant Hornets and bumble bees have photographic memory, so id not be surprised if others have that as well. Honey bees do remember, since they need to be able to communicate directions to the rest of the colony, as to how much i dont know, but i know its directions and distances at least, probably landmarks as well. Bumble bees will remember key location as they travel, which is why you see them return to some land mark, circle it for a few seconds and then keep going again, in both directions.

    I just unwintered my now 2 year old black carpenter ant colony and moved them into a forest-floor themed terrarium, it was a very easy move as most of the colony was and still is hiding within the large piece of driftwood that they've been nesting in ever since moving out of their founding test tube. I am happy to report that my beautiful girls are are super happy with their new lands. They are healthy and energetic and I've even seen their first Super Major! Thankyou for the Ant Love that you've spread to my home, I never would have gotten into raising an ant colony without you're videos.

    I have two fledgling colonies right now: a New York carpenter ant (Camponotus novaeboracensis) colony with a queen I caught last year, and an Eastern Black carpenter ant (C. pennsylvanicus) queen I caught just a few days ago! Really cool to see the differences between the two species; the New York carpenter ants with their distinctive red mesosomas, and the Eastern Black carpenter ants with their larger size and golden hairs on their gasters. It's also been amazing to see the NY ant workers spray formic acid on the arthropod prey I give them; I didn't know this species would do that, but it's been exciting to watch!
