Roy did say in an interview with osgood that he felt the aves had lost their focus and the rivalry went overboard, at least from his perspective, when him and ozzy had their fight in 1998. After that, they focused more on winning games. It also shows that eventually, those two teams would play the first game in a long time that had no penalty minutes. Imo, their rivalry has not been the same since the big lockout in 04-05. Makes some sense though as thats around the time many of the players are beginning to retire from playing.

Interesting that in the 80s, the memorable game was won by the series winner in every matchup except for Detroit vs. Toronto in 1987. The Leafs went up 3-1 with that game 4 win, then blew it as the Wings won 3 in a row to advance to the conference final.

Dino Ciccarrelli and Minnesota were so exciting in 1981. They came from nowhere. My least favourite series from that year had the Oilers sweeping the Habs in the first round 3-0. Still remember Larry Robinson with his gloves off ready fight and that coward Messier Standing back wielding his stick and threatening to axe chop Robinson with it in the head. I think in 1982 it was the 4-3 Quebec series win over Boston. Huge swings in that series. I think the Bruins won a game 8-4. And quebec won one 7-2. That was like Goulet and the Stasny''s versus Rick Middleton and Barry Pederson and Terry O'reilly. 1986 Yeah Battle of Alberta. I went to one of the St Louis games. They almost lost to Federko and gilmour in St Lous 1989 it was that first 7 game Vancouver vs Calgary series. Back and forth in that series and the toughest series they had, Amazing series montreal had never lost a stanley cup final in Montreal before 91 Pittsburgh dominating Minnesota Men vs Boys. 92 Ditto Pittsburgh vs Chicago 93 Toronto losing to LA 94 Rangers Canucks final 95 playoffs were pretty bad 96 Colorado beating Detroit in 6 97 Detroit over Colorado in 6 99 Colorado beat Detroit Dallas Beat Colorado 00 sorry Boring 2001 Colorado took out New Jersey and the trap. 2002 Carolina was so exciting. beating Toronto in 6 2003 Ottawa finally advanced in the playoffs and lost to New Jersey in 7 2004 Calgary beating Vancouver in 7 in the first round again.

1997 still breaks my heart. The Flyers had steamrolled their way through the playoffs including beating both Mario Lemieux and Wayne Gretzky only to fold in the finals. For me in 1985, and yes I'm biased, was the Flyers/Nordiques conference finals. Flyers won 4-2 and the game in that one was game 6 with the Flyers winning but the backbreaker was Dave Poulin scoring a shorthanded goal in a 5 on 3 which killed the Nordiques spirits. 1987, game 6 of the finals was the greatest hockey game I've ever seen. The Flyers down 2-1, Brian Propp scored a power play goal to tie it then a minute and a half later JJ Daigneault scored from the point to give the Flyers the lead. I swear I heard the crowd pop from my house in South Jersey. Of course game 6 of the Wales Conference finals should be a favorite in anyone's book with the Flyers and Canadiens having a Slap Shot type pre-game brawl with guys fighting with no shirts on or in flip flops. 1989 Flyers/Canadiens was the official death of the Broad Street Bullies.

In '95 I'd have to go with the Devils sweeping the Red Wings. Detroit was heavily favored, for good reason, but that NJ team just wasn't going to be stopped. And as far as the NJ/Dallas series goes I remember two things vividly from game 6: that incredible pass by Elias to Arnott to clinch it, and Elias/Larry Robinson wearing Sykora's jersey during the celebration after Sykora got laid out by Hatcher earlier in the game. Though my personal favorite series was the Devils against Flyers. An incredible comeback by NJ and Elias has one of, if not my favorite, goal in Devils history when he scored the GWG late.

Before 1988 Boston hadn’t beat Montreal in a playoff series since 1943 which was an 18 series win run for the Canadiens. My all-time favorite playoff series was the Habs 1971 quarterfinal win over the Bruins with game 2 being the most memorable. After Boston won game 1 and leading 5-1 in game 2 the Canadiens stormed back to win the game 7-5 before putting the series away in game 7 in Boston by a 4-2 score. It was as big of an upset as the US Olympic hockey team beating the Russians in 1980.

I don't know about "favorite", but the series which to me was the most memorable beyond it's practical significance was the 1997 second-round series between the Red Wings and the LA Ducks (then known as the Anaheim Mighty Ducks). Detroit won that series in a four-game sweep, but it was not a typical sweep, as three of the four games went to overtime. The Ducks did very well for what then was a one-line team with a hot goaltender (who was injured in game 2 and missed the rest of the series), which was playing in their playoff debut against the eventual Stanley Cup champion. The most disturbing part of the series for me was game 3 in Anaheim, when the fans started chanting "USA!" whenever Detroit's "Russian Five" unit was on the ice. This was eight years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, and prior to Russian aggression in Chechnya, Georgia, or Ukraine, so there was no reason for anti-Russian bigotry at that time, but old habits from the cold war apparently died hard. I remember wishing that I could ask the crowd what really bothered them, the fact that Detroit used a unit of five Russian players, or the fact that these players kept shooting the puck past their Russian goalie (who had started the series as Guy Hebert's backup). But overall, the series worked out well for the Red Wings. Completing it in four games gave the team a full week to get ready for the Avalanche. When asked if that might be too long of a break, then-Red Wings coach Scotty Bowman said that he wasn't worried, thanks to the overtimes. They had just played the playing-time equivalent of nearly six regulation games over the course of just one week, so their conditioning level was through the roof, even beyond what is typical for pro athletes. He predicted that he would have the team ready to charge out of the gate for the next series, and he certainly made good on that promise.

That was back in the era when the NHL lumped the whole league together by points and not by division. The Minneapolis paper wouldn’t even show the division standings. It was just by points top to bottom.

Wasn't 1999 the year of the 'controversial' winning goal with Hull's skate in the crease? The way they called it all season you couldn't have a toe in the crease. I remember a lot of pissed off sabres fans.

You could be in the crease if a) you had possession of the puck or b) the puck entered the crease before you. On video review, they ruled that Hull had possession of the puck before he entered the crease. While I was happy Dallas won, I always found that ruling dubious.
