Three things I've learned in this video: 1.) Shannon's so wholesome, even his superstitions boil down to "don't be a dick" 2.) I can't be the only one now waiting for Shannon to grow a "badass hockey grandpa" playoff beard 3.) I am absolutely stealing that Shipping Up To Boston tradition

I watch the games with a regular crew at the bar, couple times I went to use the bathroom and my team scored, now when we're down a goal sometimes I'll get remarks like "Isn't it time for you to take a bathroom break?" etc
I remember in 2014 when the Sharks went up 3-0 I said out loud “we won the series”. I have never gloated ever again about a series until the clock hits 0 and the wins are 4.

During the 2010 gold medal game, I noticed that Canada played better the closer I was to the tv (in hindsight the causality was clearly the reverse lol). So to give them momentum boosts, I would back up and quickly walk towards the television - the timing and speed had to be precise. And I just paced like that for a good chunk of the game. You're welcome Canada.

My personal superstition is when my team is in the playoffs, I wear the appropriate jersey for where they’re at. Away jersey when they’re away and home jersey when they’re at home. Tends to have a good record when I’m watching.

ESPN is a great legacy broadcaster of hockey and the music is still iconic but in the modern age they need to stay far far away IMO.
My mom has a superstition when LSU is playing Bama in cfb. Which is when the game is on, she hides in her bedroom and comes out during commercials. It is only for this one game, but she claims, "She is doing her part to help the Tigers win!"
I think the "no gloating" is just a good way to go about life :)
My superstition is that if I make the Leafs my team, they will never win the cup again. I have been a Leafs fan since 1968.
I remember the one time i talked about the following round and playoff strategy about the next team during a round 1 game. I was talking to my mom, and it was a commercial break, but we started talking during game play around the 8-minute mark. I'm a Knights fan, and it was game 7 against the San Jose Sharks in 2019. Never again.
Its true, the Wings collapse in March is my fault for wearing my wings hat.
I'm not superstitious either. Except in 2010, watching my Blackhawks. I had my 1992 CCM Center Ice jersey on. They were playing awful and getting beat. I took it off. They played a bit better. But they were still losing. My ex kept the house temperature cold enough to keep an ice rink. So I put on a Bears hoodie. They won. I wore the Bears hoodie throughout the playoffs and they won the cup. So it's gotta be that, right? Also, no gloating. 100%.
Hats off for refusing to advertise gambling on your channel THG!!!!!!!!
#5 is universal for any hockey fan worth their salt. Great list THG I never knew about #1 sweater on game day.
The trick to gambling is: ALWAYS bet against your own team. If they lose, you win. If they win, it's like you paid for them to win.
Remember me and my kids magic 8 ball winning the CBJ series against Tampa. Before every game Id ask if CBJ would win. All 4 games it said yes or outllook is good. Then for the next series I found out that Magic 8 ball was actually a Boston fan and i never saw that thing again.

I have similar view on gambling and I just don't do it unless I feel like losing. I also have the number ten sort of, I feel like if I watch my favourite team play they are more likely to lose. Superstitions are fun when you know they are not real, but you feel them :D Also you are my favourite NHL channel. Thank you very much
My uncle would take my dad when he was a kid to Kings games when they played at the Forum. They are true die hards. When the Kings won their first Stanley Cup in 2012 ending the 45 year drought, it was one of the only times I saw my dad cry in front of me. They both couldn’t believe it finally happened. Fast forward when the Kings were on their run 2014, my uncle couldn’t watch any of the playoff games because he was so nervous. He said only to call him if they won. Then he would watch the recording after. My uncle would pass away a year later. I’m glad he got to see two Stanley Cups before he passed because he was truly one of those long suffering Kings fans who stuck with the team from the very beginning in the early 70s. 👑
I love how everyone’s sharing their superstitions! I always knock on wood when my team is leading in a game and the commentators say something positive about them 😅
For #7 I took that as making fun of a player then my team goes and loses to them after that player scores or stops a score. For #10 I get that, when I listen to the radio I feel like I am more "into" the game because the announcers are more descriptive, I need to pay closer attention, and I have the 'ice rink of the mind' going, as I imagine the players on the ice. Great vid Shannon!
A couple of my superstitions, these apply to football, basketball, and baseball in addition to hockey: 1. I don’t celebrate a win until the clock hits 0:00 or the series is over. 2. I never gamble in favor of my team, but I will gamble against them because it’s a win-win, or I will do the total score. 3. I never overlook a team (being a fan of UNC football will do that to you)
I love this Hockey Guy, content like no other
100% agree with the no jersey on game day. I will only wear a jersey if I'm attending the game in person. Otherwise, I will not even wear a shirt of the team until they win, then I'll throw on the jersey until I go to bed. Weird, but it's how I've always been.
I remember growing up the Vancouver Canucks had the old symbol of an outline of a green hockey rink with a stick outline in the middle.
Shannon? Hellebuyck’s here. Get me a new magnet for tomorrow’s game. I need to shake things up.
At the beginning of this season I was showing my girlfriend one of my jerseys which happens to be a Henrik Sedin Jersey. My favorite team is the Oilers but I don't have an Oilers Jersey so I decided to put on the Sedin Jersey just to have some fun on the first day of the season. The Canucks ended up beating Edmonton with no mercy, the Canucks went on a run and became the best team in the pacific, and the Oilers ended up being tied for last place in the league. I told myself that I would never again wear a jersey for a team that the Oilers are playing against that night. I stayed consistent and then the Oilers ended up coming back to make the playoffs again.
My superstition is that I’m probably never going to a playoff game again. Not because I can’t afford it, it’s because every single playoff game I’ve been to after a specific year has been a loss. The last playoff win I witnessed in person? Game 6 of the 2012 Finals.
I’m the complete opposite on the jersey thing lol jerseys ONLY on game days

I absolutely HATE IT when people do that. It's not "you" that made that great trade or went on that playoff run. It's the team you CHEER FOR. It's ascribing ownership to something purely because you're emotionally invested, and last I checked "you" weren't the owner of the team.
Idea: Ever think of only wearing jerseys of your favorite three teams for the first month of next season during your videos? The entire season?
Not buying merch during the season is a big one. All my merchandise buying has to be done in the offseason
I appreciate you looking out for the rest of us fans with the magnets haha Good looking out
#5 reminds me of "Sh*t hockey players dont say" when that goalie is like "can everyone please mention shut, out, shutout or any variation of that phrase please , before our game" !
I love that I have the complete opposite for the first one. I wore a knights jersey for playoff games 1&2, but not 3&4 and look where we are......
1:21 right off the bat I agree. I like to wear my sweater after a hard earn win
I had my hockey superstitions too. I only wore jerseys on the day after a WIN. I hate or hated seeing people on TV morning shows wearing jerseys, especially on a day of a ROAD GAME!! REALLY?!? My biggest hockey superstition was music. Having lived in Calgary for the last 30+ years, I reached a point where I wished radio stations would play Flames related songs when they advanced to the second round. Obviously, with the exceptions of 2004, 2015, and 2022, it backfired BIG TIME!! And to whatever radio station created 'In Da Dome', BURN THE TAPE, PLEASE!?!?! I have played music for Junior Hockey teams in the Calgary area and I had reached a point where I did NOT change the team's entrance music or goal songs once playoffs arrived. One year I caved to the team's demands and they were eliminated in the first round after dominating the regular season.
I remember my dad would watch Canucks games on the tv with the radio play by play when I was a kid in the 90s
THIS IS GREAT!
As an American, I sing along to O Canada and even get it stuck in my head sometimes. Glad it goes both ways 😅
When I lived in Vancouver, I found the opposite about Jerseys on Gameday. Literally, everyone wears the Canucks jersey or any sort of Canucks gear on gameday, and no one wears it when it's not gameday. If you wear it when it's not gameday, people come up to you and ask if it's a gameday. lol. Now that I live in Winnipeg , they come up to you and talk about how good/bad the team/player is doing and who needs to leave town etc. lol
It’s also just a playoff thing for me, and it changes. But in 2019, from the beginning of the playoffs (or maybe just a bit before), my rule was that on non game days, I had to wear a Blues shirt. On game days, it had to be a Blues jersey. I was not allowed to repeat anything until I got through them all. Giveaway jerseys, warm ups or ones that were from alumni camps all counted, as long as they had a Bluenote. Even the logo they had on the yellow jerseys counted, as I had one of those from the 2017 WC alumni game. I also got way into the numbers that kept popping up in the playoffs for them. I wasn’t surprised when they lost game 6 of the final, because it made them 6-7 in home games with series lengths of 6-7-6-7. Also known as the year the Blues joined the league.
im all on board the badass playoff grampa vibes for a beard lol
Fun video Shannon, I'll be 60 soon and haven't been able to play in ten yrs but I still have my gear and no one touches my game stick, lol. Watching, well I've made it clear I find the game so distracting (adds) that I rarely watch and when I do I just end up listening to it in the back ground so no superstitions there. Besides I'm a Blackhawk fan ugg.
Shannon will you make a video about Lindy in Buffalo? curious to hear your in depth thoughts
Being old, many of my hockey & other sports memories are from listening on the radio. Every Sunday night was Rangers on WNEW with Marv Albert & Sal "Red Light" Messina back in the 70s. I remember 1975 listening to game 3, Islanders vs. Rangers, the Rangers tie the game, go into OT. I used to listen down in a room in the basement and I run upstairs to get stuff to eat during the OT & JP Parise scores 12 seconds in. That was a Friday night, and I was tuned in to the Islander broadcast on WMCA instead of the Rangers. It was crazy. Another, not hockey, was listening to the Mets clinch the NL East division back in 1969. I was not a Mets fan and was only 8 years old, but it sticks out all these years later. Funny, I have no football memories from radio. You got to watch football or it's nothing, but baseball & hockey are great on the radio. That was a whole lot of my childhood.
I was a big Steelers fan growing up (still are today). I would never watch their playoff games live only after the fact. Still do that with the Super Bowl today..
14:50 okay good it's not just me who has a heart attack everytime the other team gets a shot on goal
My main ones are to touch the Leafs lanyard hanging in my car, wear the same shirt in the whole series, and listen to Subdivisions from Rush before a Leafs playoff game.
Thanks Shannon good video. Remember watching games with radio on and sound from TV turned off as a superstition. Betting on your team is a sad situation all around and don't recommend it . Totally agree on the Betting ads that fill the airwaves ,it turns me off the Betting side more than encouraging me to bet. I do still play bclc on occasion and I know when I do that the $2 is gone I bet. I get my entertainment from it and that's it.
glad im not the only one with the "gambling is a guaranteed loss" curse. I spent about 200$ in 2023 (only 50 a month) to try and gamble, every single game i bet on the avs either lost or the players i bet on under-performed that game. i bet on every game for awhile and it was a losing streak against bad teams. I actively tried to bet on the avs against bad teams and they would lose those games, it drove me insane.
Another big one I hear alot is that when your team is in the playoffs, NEVER mention the (Name of Championship Trophy) until we have it in our hands. It's a Jinx!
my biggest superstition is not watching highlights or ANYTHING having to do with the game the day after or before the next game(usually only in playoff time but sometimes during reg season too) or even looking at the ESPN page for the next game. So no watching highlights, replays, even your own breakdown videos sometimes, or looking at predictions for the next game. might be a weird one, but it somehow works.
Your videos have become a crucial part of my superstitions. I have to listen to your coverage of the playoffs, it would feel like heresy not to.
During the playoffs, if my team wins when I don't watch or listen, then lose when I do, I can't watch anymore of that round. Works sometimes 😂
I'll bet you could do a good Jack Benny impression.
I remember the Playoff Massacre in Quebec vs the Habs!
The only superstition I had pertaining to sports was back when was 13 years old. My Habs won the Stanley Cup that year and I think their 10 consecutive OT wins was influenced in some way by me...the night they lost to Quebec in OT I wore the wrong jersey. I had their home jersey on and they were playing away. Every game afterwards I wore the proper jersey and they win the Cup. So unlike the norm, wearing jerseys on game day is a necessity for me, but wearing the proper jersey is of the utmost importance.
My clothing superstitions mainly center around baseball. At the beginning of the century, I had a partial season ticket (20 weekend games) for my favorite MLB team. I never wore their cap to the games because that was an automatic loss. I would wear minor league or my college hats and stick with whichever one got a win. As for gambling, that's right out. In grade school, boys would gamble over whether their pennies would match, heads or tails, after flipping them. Pennies were to rare and precious to me back then to essentially give them away to someone else. 60 years later I still find myself squeezing them on occasion.
On a different note, this season, the Avalanche have scored within 5 minutes of me turning on the audio broadcast at a ridiculously high consistency (I don’t get to watch or listen as often as I’d like so we aren’t talking an 82+ game sample size). I’ve probably been able to tune in and listen to 40 games, and in at least 25 of them they have scored within 5 minutes. I started doing it “strategically” and my intent for it to work out or not didn’t seem to affect the outcome 🤷🏼♂️ happened with the Zach Parise goal last night (game 2 first round) so it’s still a thing currently happening lol
Slim pickings for me as a Sens fan when it comes to playoff superstitions, but in 2017 I had to shoot on my net in the driveway right before every game and could not cut my hair. It worked pretty well but I haven't been able to test them out ever since
I noticed the tendency that whatever team I'm currently cheering on always wins whenever I don't watch them. However when I do watch them they lose.

focus on team(s) play better (like power rankings)? winning happens over longer time frame, sometimes much longer?
I'm a really superstitious when it comes to hockey as well..I'm a Montreal Canadiens fans and in game days I don't do the following things 1. Play any NHL hockey games 2. I can't wear my jersey during the game 3. I have to sit in a specific spot or I feel like I caused the team to lose
I share quite a few that are the same or similar. Exception is the jersey. I literally do the opposite and typically wear the home, home alternate or away jersey depending on where they’re playing. Makes the hockey geek in me feel like part of the team, lol
Every NHL game I have attended in person so far, the home team loses. I might be cursed.
4:13 did you see the game last night 🤣🤣🤣
When the Bills get a winning streak going i keep wearing the same jersey. This year it was red Allen
The radio thing, you might be onto something there honestly
As a jackets fan I have been forced to adopt #3. I hope to drop it soon.
oh myy.. poor dallas, the shannon curse is upon thee!
I usually don’t comment ever on KZread videos but I just had to share some of my superstitions. I am a Rangers fan, so this is going to be biased towards the Rangers. - Former Rangers always score on the Rangers. Even if the player has been absolutely terrible, they will always find a way to score against the Rangers. - Shaving a playoff beard is certain death for your team in the playoffs. Obviously in the video so I had to comment this one. - DURING the game, wear the correct jersey for the entirety of the game. Being a Rangers fan for many years, I obviously have collected many jerseys but one of the superstitions that I have is that if they’re home you wear blue, if they’re away you wear white, and if they’re wearing a third jersey you can just wear any third jersey. I also make a note not to remove my jersey until the game is over or if I know they’ve lost. Weird how these superstitions happen.
If cannucks make the second round you have to start the playoff beard pls
For me I wear jerseys on game days but if Vancouver loses and the player jersey i wear doesn't get a point I change to a different player jersey that I have next game, but if they win I keep wearing the same jersey
I wear my Hurricanes Jersey on game day. I'm superstitious that I have to wear it because I got the jersey for Christmas, right when the Hurricanes turned it around. It's a Martin Necas Jersey and right around when I started wearing it is when he heated up. I know it has not impact on the game or Necas' play, but there's a tiny part of me that thinks wearing it will help him and the team out. I also usually don't gloat unless the Hurricanes are down. Because I feel like gloating makes them lose, but when the Hurricanes are down the other fans get so cocky that it's fun to mock them from below. And it's a LOT of fun when the Hurricanes pull off the comeback
That's funny, I ALWAYS wear jersey on game day, and color has to match (unless they are wearing a special one I don't have)

I will wear jerseys on game days, but if I win I'm stuck wearing the jersey until we lose, at which point I switch to a new one. I have 4 jerseys that I rotate for playoffs. I tend to wear the jerseys I like less early to have my favorites ready for when it counts. Also like to wear my Vasy jersey last as near the end of a series is when we really need the big games from him

The Vancouver Awful Sweaters.😂
At some point this season I started doing my daily duolingo lessons before puck drop and I convinced myself that if I didn't get 100%, and my team lost, it was my fault :')
My plan this year is, if my team makes it to the finals is to bet against them so no matter what the out come of the game is I win something.
On game days, I used to boot up the old N64 and beat whoever the Ducks were playing that day 60-0.
"I was hockey." Profound!
Random story, the other night I was watching the Canes game vs NYI with my friends and I was wearing a jersey. I live in the south and started to heat up in the sweater, so I took it off midway through the second. Voila, 5 straight goals… coincidence, I think not!
I always wear Canes gear on GameDay. Doesn't have be a jersey but something with the logo. They might lose if I do, but they will definitely lose of I don't. 😂
