So is the government really concerned about pollution or is ULEZ just another way of taxing the people it's supposed to represent?

Because it disproportionately affects the fewest cars of those on the lowest incomes, on that basis alone, it's somewhat unfair.

    This is actually a lot of misinformation. Earlier this summer I talked with the guy in charge of dealing with fires on a long distance car ferry. He said, very bluntly, it doesn't matter what kind of car catches fire - they have no really effective way to extinguish it. They have zoned water sprays, and in principle some guys can go onto the car deck with hoses. In practice he told me that they will just use the water sprays to suppress the fire long enough to get everyone off the boat and then let it burn out. The one fire he has seen was a diesel generator that overheated, and the fire spread to some cars and that was it. The ship was scrapped.

    20 mph will increase emissions in ICE cars due to being in lower gear.

  • @niclightfoot4329
    @niclightfoot432910 ай бұрын

    Hi Lee, The disparity in range estimation between your car (which reduced) and Jeff's (which increased) is because your range (the EV) is measured on power reserve in the battery, which is a reasonably accurate reflection of the actual power reserve. In an ICE, the estimated range is based on accumulated past driving performance, and is not very accurate: if previous driving performance used a lot of litres per mile (driving fast or in stop-start conditions) and current driving performance is more efficient using less litres per mile you can very often recover (increase) estimated range on the current tank of fuel - I see it all the time. So, in an ICE, if you did a lot of constant fast driving for 100 miles (chewing up a lot of fuel), your current range will be estimated on this. If you now do a further 100 miles at a constant 30 mph your range will be adjusted / increased to reflect this. This is simple engineering. Basically, the range estimate in an ICE is a poor guess, whilst in an EV it is a more accurate reflection of battery reserve, but it is still dependent on how you are now going to drive the car - even in the EV you will reduce the range as you increase the speed. That's why when EVs sense they are low on power they reduce your speed to extend the range. So, no mystery here!

    Wbat gou said makes little sense. An ICE vehicle measures fuel left in tank and some estimate of future mpg based on both past mpg and current fuel flow rate. An EV essentially does the same based on current battery charge and an estimate of charge depletion based on past usage and present measurement of electrical current flow. The only reason for the range estimate to be better on one type of vehicle vs. the other simply has to do with the accuracies of the sensors employed and the sophistication of the equation used to calculate the remaining range.

    EV's are the biggest scam in motoring history. Also, if anyone thought that they would get cheap motoring in an EV are living in cloud cuckoo land. Some people have bought EV's on the back of this and I'll bet they regret that now that the cost of electricity has risen so much and of course they are to be taxed before long. In terms of restrictions, it is definatey to get us off the roads and limit our freedom of movement. I have no doubt about that. I live in Wales and the 20mph restrictions are absurd. I was out in the early hours recently and did 20 in a restricted zone. No-one about, no cars and it was absolutely ridiculous. But no-one is taking any notice of it anyway and a recent report into the effects of the 20 zones found that although there was a slight drop in speeds initially, that has dropped off now so goes to show that it is being ignored.But we have the power Lee. We must be careful who we vote for.

And it wasn't much of a problem, as it hardly left anything to be disposed of, but a black spot on the ground, maybe to be restored for fire damage at a time? Really a clean vehicle in every way! And an electric fire can't be stopped, so the one "Danish Rescue Service (Falck)" has lately bought 4 iron boxes for EVs to be pushed into, while burning out, without being a hazard to the surroundings as long as it may last. I do hope of course, that I will never be on a ferry with a burning EV (They are not able to extinguish a fire in an EV, even by cutting of the supply of oxygen on one of the decks)? Luckily the one major Ferry Operator in Denmark are soon to be replaced with a tunnel for cars and trains for 18 km, below the water (Hopefully an EV won't start to burn during the passing of that?). Here's something else that's pissed me off ,if I'm understanding this correctly manufacturers now have a quota of ice cars that they can sell and once they reach it people who want an ice have to wait until next year's quota which is being reduced each year forcing people to buy EVs . This also falsifies the EV sales numbers once compared to ice sales due to this artificial number caping

    we have as usual followed the Americans. About 30 years ago had to go to USA for work and every time I had a meal in the hotel, I had to answer a series of questions about each ingredient in the meal starting with the bread, I was so glad when I got home to Blighty and you could order a meal and that was the end of the conversation. Now its twenty questions for every thing, Aaaaaargh!!!

    When you say, ‘you have it on finance’, you mean leased, right? Well in that case, the battery life is in the lease-price calculation, so you are paying for the degradation of the battery, just like you would be paying for the engine in an ICE car.

    Where i live near Bracknell its very very frustrating to drive a car you cannot get anywhere by car here why ? because roadworks temp traffic lights everywhere and worst thing is they are working on the pavement not even in the main road , dont repair pot holes no no no , instead lets repair footpaths on London road and anyone who knows that road knows no one every walks up there as its a direct footpath from Ascot to Bracknell 1 hour it would take you to walk the 4 mile distance totally crazy , E-scooters are a good idea but they are illegal unless you rent the council ones , what a scam the whole thing is , Im just thinkinh of staying home forever lying in bed and going into stasis for the next 50 years until normality is back LOL

    At least your EV is not ugly like most of them. Agree with your city car comments, EVs make sense only when charged at home, and for those weekly shopping trips as a grocery getter. Small, nimble cars for very short trips. ICE cars do most of their polluting when cold and suffer most expensive wear also. So a two car solution could work well for most of us. A little EV for the shopping, a Grand Touring ICE for long trips. In Australia we travel vast distances compared to you in the UK. Melbourne to Sydney is about 900 km and Sydney to Brisbane is about 1100 km. Both one way. Out rural infrastructure for EVs is almost non-existent. Enjoyed your show, thanks, Hugh

    Just a point Lee. You say that if you charge your EV up at home it’s much cheaper. However what your not considering is on the mileage that you must do that £12 a full charge is likely to be per day so that’s £60 a week. I’d put money on any petrol/diesel car would still be going the following week so it isn’t cheaper to run an EV.

  • @theoneandyt

    @theoneandyt

    10 ай бұрын

    Terry it's £s per mile though... So think of it as £12 gets you approximately 300 miles (just going from what was quoted). It doesn't really matter how far you drive. You won't get that with petrol/diesel.

    The trouble is we are being forced into the purchase of these EV's on the wrong premise IE to save the environment rather than making ICE vehicles cleaner ( the GEET system inverted by Paul Pantone would give a minimum of triple the MPG. but is being ignored!). the other way to make them cleaner is to make them lighter. Look at the weight of cars in the 1960's/70's they are almost half the weight of their equivalent models now!

    Re; your comment about FUD. It was IBM's marketing for selling computers based on Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt about other brands to push IBM products. With regards to Geoff's comments about estate cars I preferred MPV. I bought one of the first Renault Espace in the country. I ordered one at the end of 1985 and took delivery on a D Plate in 1986. I finally got rid of it 16 years later after covering 336,000 miles of comparatively trouble free motoring. Replaced it with a late Phase 3 model which was a bit of a nightmare because it was a mix with lots of Phase IV parts fitted instead of Phase III, so trying to get parts was very hit or miss. My last one was the 3.0 litre V6 Grand Espace. If I get the chance I would love to get a good low mileage one. I believe that Renault still make the Espace but only in lhd but there are 4 different models made in India, two under the Dacia name.
