As a Roman Catholic parent of three kids, two of whom are girls, I can imagine how your parents may have felt finding out you were lesbian, but I cannot for the life of me consideer putting any of my kids into conversion therapy or foster care. I love them too much. My youngest was questioning sexuality at age 5, and she felt guilty for feelings she had. I explained to her that things get really mixed up when you are a kid, and that no matter what she did or felt, that I would love her just the same, and that I will always be her Dad, and not to fear coming to me. Your story is sad, you got messed up by parents that didn't realize the consequences of trying to change you, and apparently not communicating with you. It is stories such as yours that have formed my approach to raising my children. My daughter is only 13, but starting to pursue relationships, and she comes to me with good questions. I hope you find healing and happiness in your life.

A bit of an update: My first daughter has come out as Lesbian. She is only 15. Her younger sister confirmed to me she is straight. My initial reaction was, oh God, what have I done? I failed my daiughter by not giving her the example of what a good man is to her. She doesn't hate men, but doesn't feel attracted to them. Rather, she feels attacted to girls. A big part of the problem is that she lives with her mom in Texas, and I am still in California. I can't be with her. My response to her was that I will love her no matter what. I try to communicate with her as often as possible. We will get through the adversities this presents, and I hope to be able to travel to see her. I will likely move to Texas, but not yet. I have unfinished business out here.

You can’t help who you’re attracted to or who you are. It has nothing to do with how good of a dad (or mom or parent) someone has been. Also, things can change over time. I came out as bi when I was 14, then came out as a trans man in my early 20s and realized soon after that I’m a gay trans guy (I’m not attracted to women at all). My sister came out as a lesbian at around 16 years old, dated the same girl for 3 or 4 years, then came out as bi and is currently dating a man

I dont think it was straight up questioning sexuality at that age but a lot of parents start really early making jokes about "oh she has a lil boyfriend" "oh that boy likes you" etc as a joke ish so i can imagine if youve been more curious about girls than boys at that age (not even in a weird way) it may already lead to the child getting confused or different since some parents dont even consider the fact their child may have a thing for multiple or the same gender. Thats my guess

I couldn't even imagine sending my child to conversion therapy and putting them in foster care because I as THE PARENT couldn't handle them being who they are! When my kids were in their early teens, they asked what I'd do if they turned out to be gay. I said it doesn't change anything. I'd still love & support them.
