In this video men's style, grooming, fitness and lifestyle expert, Aaron Marino of IAmAlphaM, AaronMarino, and Pete & Pedro is discussing his darkest days. He gets asked about motivation all the time, and he doesn't know how to answer because motivation has never been one of his issues. He knows how it feels to be broke, scared, and have hi hopes-and-dreams collapse around him.
Alpha never grew up around much money. His family was on welfare, and his earliest childhood memory was seeing burglar in his house. His family managed but eventually got divorced. He had two step-dads thereafter. One he blocked out, and one was emotionally abusive. His mother gave him a fitness membership at 13 years old which changed everything for him. He may have had a crappy home life but was at 'home' at the gym. At 13 years old, he realized that he wanted to be a gym owner.
He went to college after high school. He got a business degree in order to be a gym owner. He moved to Atlanta, GA to open his business and got a job at Bally's where he met a guy who wanted to open a nutrition store with him. It was successful, but the guy took advantage of Alpha. At that point in his life, Alpha was unable to stand up for himself. He ended up getting help from a counselor who helped him find his value. He stopped second guessing his worth.
They opened another nutrition store, but Alpha was very unhappy. Plus the guy was selling drugs out of the back. Alpha knew it was time to go. so he left to become a trainer. During this time, he met a girl who he helped to lose weight. They decided to open a gym together. He worked a ton but he loved it because he was in his element. They didn't make much money, but he was happy. He was doing something that he wanted to do from a young age.
They created a new fitness concept that they wanted to franchise. They needed money and got investors and a bank loan. They put together a new location but ran out of money really quickly. Legal issues arose as well, and ultimately, they decided to shut down.
Alpha took a job driving a beer cart on the weekends just to make ends meet. It was a humbling experience. It was the middle of the winter, a 30 year old guy, driving a beer cart in freezing temps. He was so scared. He didn't have anything to fall back on... no plan B. He didn't know what to do. His world had collapsed, and he was financially ruined.
He decided he'd do whatever it took to be successful. If it wasn't for that moment, being down THAT low, that he may not have ever seen the moment to do something amazing. So when you see Alpha get emotional, it's because of how thankful he truly is.
If you are struggling or feeling hopeless, keep working! It gets better. It gets incredible! Alpha wouldn't change anything that has happened to him. He would do it again. He feels that those times built him and give him appreciation. It will get better if you press forward and persevere. Everyday, he gets up and tried not to mess it up. If he can make it, so you can you!

I really don't understand why the society equates masculinity with being stone-cold and not ever displaying your emotions. I'd say you have to be pretty strong to bare yourself when you're at your most vulnerable state. Men who cry are at peace with their masculinity and do not fear that a human emotion that is so fundamental to our existence (we come into this world crying after all) can ever put a question mark over their image.

growing up and life can be a pain in the ass,... literally, like right up main St. but it's those tough times that when life hits you and you bounce back you're becoming more durable (busting one roof after another). Treat life like it's a shit test, flow with it but don't ever get too comfortable because it will get you when you are. Idk if you've herd it before it just want to let you know without boring you.(also to avoid lectures ;) ) (Oh and good job Mike)

I've been through similar times. I'm 27. My father suddenly died when I was 12 years old and I was raised by an undiagnosed bipolar mother. I barely passed high school due to depression. I got my AS degree in Electronics and continued to get my BS in Electrical Engineering. I failed out of the program due to medication issues. I started a business with my brother and it failed miserably and I lost the money I had. I worked at minimum wage jobs trying to get by. The silver lining is that I was offered a position at a biomedical engineering company as an Electrical Engineer. I didn't get a Bachelor's degree, but I worked my ass off to be competitive and unique. I was chosen over people with their Masters degree due to my attitude, work ethic, and intelligence. Failing is just the beginning. YOU can push through and make things happen. Never give up and never stop improving.

I feel you Aaron. Don't know if you going to read this but I was even lower than you. I freshed got my business&management degree and left my country for a different one. I had nothing. I sleept under a bridge before I could afford to pay rent with the money I got from cleaning dirty toilets I was treated like no human should be treated. Then I somehow was promoted to be a waiter which is where It all changed for me. I meet a client who now is my best friend who I can't thank enough. He saw wasted potential in me as a waiter and offered me a job to his firm. After a few years of hard working there he made me an associates and we split the earnings I also have a couple of business on my own. Not to long ago I made my first million. I was looking to buy another business to invest and found out that the restaurant that I was cleaing the toilets was closing doors because of bad business managment. You should have seen that mofos face when I bought his business. He always said to me that I will never achive nothing. It felt amazing to prove him wrong. It might sound chessy but is the hard cold truth. you have to touch hell with you're toes before you feel what success really feels like. If success comes easy without the struggle is just doesn't taste the same. Like you, I'd do it all over again.

Wow! What a story dude! I'm also on track to get my MBA and it's not that I am afraid because I am very driven, but what makes you go to nothing? Because the way Aron and you tell your stories, it makes me feel that getting an MBA really doesn't assure you anything unless you are at the right place at the right time. I do not mean to be disrespectful in any way. I'm just a guy that wants to get a MBA, but I'm getting all these people that have great stories with a bad starts

Hey Rai. Sorry if I scared you. Where do I start...cleaning toilets was never in my plan. My original country is not so developed, I could have stay there but that ment to work 2-3years to gain experience for shitty pay. I thought to myself no way in hell I'm going to stay and be average especially after 23 years of education. So I contacted an agency that found me work oversease. It sounded like a good oportunity. It sounded too good to be true, no experience needed and good pay. I payed this agency and booked a plane ticket. I was supposed to meet with a guy there that arranged the contract paper. Well...the guy never showed up. I stayed at an hotel for a couple of days before I ran out of money. I said to myslef might aswell search for work If I'm here. Days went by fast and finished the money and I ended sleeping under a bridge(fortunatly it was in the summer). I could have called back home and have my parents send me some money. But I hate to ask them for money. I said to myself if I can walk I can provide. And thats when I found work at this restaurant. The pay was very low, but I could buy food and shithole over my head. There I met this firend who was pretty impressed with what I went through and offered to help me. I always thought that I will eventually do better because. 1. It couldn't get worse than that. 2. I don't like to be an average dude. Sounds cocky but believe me, I'm not. I think I really needed an experience like this because I learned alot of things that they never teach you in school. Things like to be humble to respect everyone I meet, be thankful with what I have. I honestly think if it wasn't for this experience I would have have been a soft guy that worked for averege pay for the rest of my life. Hey... if people like to be averege then by all means be so. Thats just not me. I think everyone should never settle for less what they're worth. Don't get me wrong and think it was handed to me. I work hard for what I have and took many risks. Now...you don't necessary have to go thru all this. It depends where you're from and what are your goals. But I do think that was a leasson of life that they don't teach you in school. You look really driven so keep it that way. Motivation you either have it within you or you'll find it down the hard road that I had to take. Finish MBA, see what you goals are and what the oportinities but never settle for less that you think you are worth. And stay away from restaurants. :-)

hey Aaron, when I was 6 my parents divorced. I continued living with my dad, and he got remarried when I was 8. long story short, he and his wife abused (mentally and physically) me and at the age of 11 he kicked me out of the house. I started living with my mom, but because I didn't have any contact with my dad anymore I went through puberty without my dad, which was kind of hard. about two years ago I started suffering from PTSD because of the abuse from 5 years ago. I fell into a pretty deep hole and I didn't really bother to take care of myself. nothing could motivate me and overall I felt pretty shit. on my road to recovery I found your videos and I gotta say, they helped me a lot. I want to thank you for motivating me and making me take care of myself. you taught me things most fathers teach their kids like shaving and how to dress properly. you are one of the few who inspired me to start following my dreams again, and I am forever grateful for that. thank you.

I'm, however, happy all that s**t happened to Aaron at a much younger age, for he still had some dreams & hopes left, and in the end he found the willpower & the ressourcs to bounce back. Sometimes, the older this s***t happens to you, the worse it gets (the more difficult to get out of it). If there's a freaking piece of advice to give anybody, is never be an idealist, b/c when you lose that, you lose every reason for living.

Rich and greedy are not the same. There are rich people that help the poor and feel sympathy for them because they were there. I cannot tell you how many normal people that are greedy.

Alpha, I’m new to your channel, I stumbled across you while searching for ways to boost my confidence and self esteem, from the first video that I watched I could tell you were a guy who knew what he was talking about. How I got to this video from 4 years ago I’m not sure and I doubt you’ll see this but it was definitely what I needed to watch. I have so much respect for you, making a video like this isn’t easy. Thank you so much for what you do! I know that everyone who succeeds in life has a mentor or someone they can look up too. For me your channel does just that! Thank you so much!

Damn. Dude, I always see your videos, and take notes of everything, but I wanted to leave a comment because, before trying to look well and success in life, I tried to commit suicide twice (abusive family, bad relationships, drugs, you name it), then is therapy and this whole process of becoming a better human being, and then I started to see your videos, as soon as you upload them. And knowing that there is people out there, trying to help people, because the know how it feels, just makes me cry. Thank you for everything, and keep it up.

thanks for not ending yourself. when I feel in dumps. I go back to funny things, like trolls or ither funny shitbither ppl who have made me lol. as hard as life gets.. drugs.. alcohol..depression ect, there's always a reason to continue. a smile. a laugh, pretty girl (all the ass you cant see when you're dead) just remeber, as bad as it gets.. it WILL become a new sunny day. or for my pov, a nice storm. you're not alone bro. we ALL struggle. different problems. but we're all struggling with something. finances, girls, social, jobs, family, emotional, physic, fat, skinny, you're NOT alone. I hope you keep pushing forward. you're worth it.
