Wtf why where you even allowed phones in school at that age/need them in school ??? Before I went to High school even having your phone in your bag wasn’t allowed bc you didn’t walk/ travel by yourself to school at that age ??

We did this in my class back in high school and had cell phones get stolen. I hated not having my cell phone near me even though I never used it in class.

I used to turn in a decoy phone. 😅 kids get creative.

Yea, they're like $15 on Amazon for a fake iPhone decoy.. honestly this system just doesn't work. Kids feel worried about their phones being stolen. The teacher should just use a system where if a kid uses their phone just take it for the rest of class 🤦🏻‍♀️

Actually I don't know if this is the same in every school but every year we have to sign a pice of paper stating that if a personal items such as a phone or headphones get stolen or broken it is not the schools/teacher's responsibility to replace it

If a teacher did this while I was in high school my focus would be looking at my phone the whole time because kids steal and think it’s funny. Plus if something happened it’s the teachers fault and they would be paying for a new phone

Jessica 1986 yes a privilege to have but also a necessity these days. Me and my sisters got phones when we were gonna be home by ourselves after school or had after school activities. And lots of my teachers utilized us having phones by including them in games(kahoot-Trivia game) The teacher has no right to take away personal property unless you’re on it during their lecture. I get she’s trying to prevent it but it’s her responsibility when she takes it.

Well my generation was when they dropped the whole technology on us & we never had cell phones on us until we graduated in early 2000s so we had no problems. I think it’s ruined everybody now because y’all will never know how live was before technology happened which is really sad.

I am long since out of high school, but I’m not a fan. Allow the children the opportunity to be responsible. If they aren’t, take the necessary steps to set up a punishment for it. The real world doesn’t force you away from your phone, the real world is learning to step away from your distractions.

That’s exactly what her goal is, though. She even said in the beginning of the video that she’s teaching them how to step away from distractions. This is school and it’s meant to prepare students for the real world, not yet be the real world, so she’s helping prepare them by getting them used to setting their phones aside when it’s time for working. This is a skill they can take with them into the real world.

But they aren't adults. They are teenagers. Some as young as 13. This exercise can teach then how to properly focus. Showing them how well they can focus without their phone in front of them can help them develop the skills to out their phone away on their own while doing homework or when they have an actual job. It's better than repeated detentions. Children/teenagers should not be held to the exact standard that a grown adult in an office should be.

That's a really good point. In the real world your boss isn't going to take your phone and put it in a cubby in front of the workplace. You need to learn to have your phone and not let it be a distraction to the point where you don't get your work done.

When I was in school, teachers had little baskets on every single table that people could place their phone in. That way, your phone was right in front of you and you felt better about it not getting stolen. 😊

i HATE this method. we used this in my school and no one took it seriously everyone would either put old phones in, phone cases, or not put their phones in at all. we literally call it phone jail. one way to make students not use their phones is to make class interesting! people actually wanna pay attention but not when class is boring that why kids go to their phones because it’s something better to do than listen to boring lectures

One of my teachers tried this in high school. Phones got stolen, parents got angry and the teacher was fired. Give students the chance to be responsible. This is a lazy soultion.

She clearly said in the beginning that school had been going on for months with the cell phone issue. She gave them the chance, and now had to find a solution. If kids dont wanna risk it, keep your phone in your locker. Or talk to the teacher, see if they can stash the phone in their desk. Or have the teacher check that everyone has their phone before dismissal. Easy solutions.

@@danielleferguson2332 Actually these "solutions wouldn't be that useful. I'm pretty sure all her students were not breaking the phone rules and if they did she should talk to the parents. Lockers are sometimes not effective (example: locker is on the other side of the school or in the basement or doesn't have locker. ) What if the teacher says no ? They cannot stash there phone in there desk , then what ? Also If someone swipes there phones and they return to the class I'm pretty sure they will alert the teacher and the teacher will tell the principal and he/she will check the cameras. but most times students have hoods OR the cameras just doesn't work. What is she supposed to do exactly? Let's just say she DOES check to see if all the students have there phones and some don't. Then what ?

I really do not recommend this. I know when I was in school I instantly was turned off from the teacher because it was my property and I was worried about people stealing. I literally just refused to do it. I will say, your placement for them was very good though!

What if a kid genuinely does not have a phone? I knew people in high school who’s parents never let them have a cellphone.

what if a fire comes, then they wouldn’t be able to have their phone. in my opinion i would get a referral everyday before i give you my phone willingly. in my school, you can’t take my phone unless i get a warning, or you see it twice.

Students dont need cell phones during the school day, there are plenty with the teachers and at the office.

Here the thing taking their phone and putting them in a weeks case thingy That doesn’t teach them how to ignore distractions It kinda teaching them that ignore the distractions when you are forced to and only when your forced Instead you should maybe follow the school rules and take the phone and send them to the office,Idk something.anything. But the cell phone prison/mesh bag thingy

You can lose your phone this way because someone in the class might have the same phone

One of my teachers has like "parking spaces" on the white board made out of just tape that we put are phones in during test and quizzes

I really like this idea however, I was just wondering about threft. Some kiddos are looking for an opportunity to steal and that is an ideal environment for some students. Although I teach elementary students, I have had a few kleptomaniacs before. I know phones are super expensive and I wouldn’t want to be held accountable. Maybe using a safe would be a better option. Or they could place them in a cabinet with a key. You could have dividers inside the cabinets and name slots outside of the cabinet for attendance purposes. They would put their cards in a visual location outside the cabinet to identify that they are there. 🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️🤷🏾‍♀️Just a thought for those who don’t feel comfortable with having students turn in phones to an unsecured location. Thanks for the idea. I like it and would be willing to implement a variation of it.

I’ve had a teacher do this and i was fine with it. She also had a charging station which made it 100% easier to want and put my phone there

So many people are saying to let students have their phones and if they misuse them, punish the student. That solution is reactive, not proactive. To the negative commenters on this video: if you’re argument is to trust the students and treat them like adults, then they should be trusted not to steal the phones. Let them know that if they choose to steal something that’s well over $250, then they can deal with the legal ramifications that an adult would have to deal with.

one of my teachers used this method, and told students on the first day that she would take responsibility if any phones were stolen. however, our student handbook says that the district (nor any teachers) will/can take responsibility for lost valuables, so 🤷

When I was student teaching, my CT did something very similar! We had a few kids who didn't have phones, so we made cards with their names on them so put in their slot. Then, she took attendance from the pockets! It holds them accountable for putting their phone/card there because they don't want to be marked absent. Great minds think alike. lol :)

I feel like you should let them have their phones with them but find time to teach them lessons about the right time to use them, etc. (Like you said in the beginning of the video) When they’re in college they aren’t going to have a place in the classroom to put their phones so I feel like the lessons would be useful. Also you said having the phones over in the pouches would keep them not tempted but as a student I would be more nervous about it being over there because people could steal them. Just my thoughts and I’m not a teacher but I think that’s probably a good idea for your classroom

I feel like you are just making it worse a little bit Bc the high schoolers would focus even less Bc they would be scared their phones will get stolen and they would be always checking and staring at the thing to make sure it’s still there so no work would get done ,also if the phones did get stolen that would be your problem and it would be so much of a bigger problem then it already is

I’m in middle school (they do it in the highschool to)and they do this. We don’t put it in because it gives us anxiety and distracts us even more. A holder fell and all the phones shattered and they had to get everyone new phones. AirPods and phones where stolen by friends as a joke and by strangers. It’s terrible and we don’t use it.

We did this and no one could get hold of me as my mum was dying. So. Not always a good thing. I'll never get that time back with her and I'll never forgive having to give my phone up.

If you are going to be a high school teacher learn this. These kids are almost adults treat them like it. Let them use their phones but if they misuse them take them. Let them be responsible. During lectures dont let them have their phones out but other than that let them. If they dont get their work done it is there fault. I just graduate high school and if my teacher did this I would not respect them cause they don’t respect my age.

My teacher did this and he also covered the clock because it was such a distraction for the class. the teacher has the phone jail near his desk so stealing wouldn’t happen. it also seemed to bring the class together and we all become good friends after the class was over it was one of the best classes I’ve ever had

I kinda hate this bc I only love my phone next to me so (I have really bad asthma and food allergies) if something happens i can tell the teacher and bring my phone with me, but my school is really chill about phones they have what they call “Free time” so yah

One thing teachers don’t understand now a days kids suffer severe anxiety and they cling to their phones because they’re able to communicate with there parents or friends to help comfort them throughout the day many kids don’t feel comfortable leaving there $1000+ iPhones in a mesh pocket especially because children steal I never understood why teachers do this if children don’t want to pay attention that is there own issue let them face their consequences!

I really hate using this bc kids can take other kids’ phones if they get to it first. Also, you won’t know if kids have it or not bc they could literally just say they left it in their locker and you don’t have a way of telling unless either 1. You search them (which I’m pretty sure you can’t do that) or 2. You see them on it which then is not doing anything cause that’s what you were trying to prevent, I’m a middle school student and I have teachers who do this and it really doesn’t work I think it’s much more effective to just take the phone to the office :/ but you can run your classroom however you want Edit: I also have bad health problems so I need to be always able to contact my parents from my cellphone, which I have permission to do from the school with a 504 plan

So glad it worked well for you! I’m surprised your students didn’t buck you about being required to put their phones in the pockets. Mine most certainly would. I plan to use a similar approach once I get my own classroom next year!

Great video! How funny that I would see this video today..... I’m implementing this in my classroom this next school year but I bought this wooden cell phone charging station from amazon. It holds 35 cell phones so I don’t have to worry about hanging the cell phones up. I LOVE how you have them hanging low in the classroom. A lot of the teachers hang them high and I worry about the phone holder falling and the cell phones getting damaged. Thank you for sharing this awesome video, it gives me hope for this upcoming school year because last year I was going to pull my hair out with all the darn cell phone stuff. Repeating myself over and over all day!

R Sharp personally, I’ve done this in my class and have had a challenge with a phone being stolen. Then was told by my on campus police officer that if I tell a student to place their phone any place I am responsible for it and if it’s lost or stolen that comes out of my pocket 🤑 maybe that’s just a Texas thing. Thankfully, the parent didn’t persist with my paying for the phone. But I won’t be doing this again.

@@rashidanjackson I teach in Texas as well, and we had one single incident of a "prank" (i teach at a very small school so my students have been together since sixth grade and really trust each other). But, I addressed it and had no other incidents.

Wait wait wait wait!!! You students are allowed they’re phones in your classroom never mind at school! If our phones are seen we get them taken away from us for the rest of the day and if they see our phones at the end of the day we have to give our phone to our principal the day after

In my high school you are allowed to be on it during passing times before and after school just not in the classes

If they were caught (which they usually were) I would use the school consequences which is that we keep the phone until the end of the day on the first offense and it gets turned in to the office anytime after that.

As a lot of people have pointed out, some phones get stolen. I’d say if you catch them messing on their phone, put it on your desk or something like that. That way you have an eye on it. Kids are very creative and sneaky, and we don’t want stolen property!

omg i don’t see what all the hate is about!! i’m going into grade 10 and honestly i would love for a teacher to do this instead of just take away people’s phones if they have them in class. teachers aren’t required to go the extra mile but you are and honestly it makes a big difference. i sooo want to have a teacher like you

I have a changing station in our room and a cubby for cellphones. I implemented it a few months into the year. Initially, all my students would use the cubbies. After some time, I could only get students to use it if we offered bonus points for each day they put it in their. Otherwise my students typically wouldn’t use it. Our discipline policy won’t allow us to require students to put them in the cubby. Like said, I’ve had mixed results. It has improved things, but hasn’t completely resolved the issue.

Maybe keep it near your desk so you can see who's around the phones.

I mean if you think it’s a good idea then that’s fine, but there so many bad things about it. If your like me. I would get worried it would get stolen and not pay attention and just look at the phone pouch thing. As I was saying before. The phones could get stolen and most kids these day have those $600 iPhones and if they get stolen it will fall onto the teacher to either find the phone or pay it back. Also people can accidentally grab the wrong phone because it look like theirs.

The charging station is a good idea! I had a teacher in high school who also made a phone cubby, but we were not required to put our phones in there. For every day we decided to hang our phones up, he would take note of who hung their phone up and those students would receive an extra credit point for that day. Students who were in class but did not hang up their phones lost a point. It was nice because it gave us more freedom- it felt like we weren’t forced into anything, and we could make the decision for ourselves, but we had incentive for putting our phones up. I feel like we wanted to comply more because of it. The points added up and when the semester ended I had like 30 extra credit points!!

We did this in high school and we had no problems with stolen phones. Our teacher called us by numbers to get phones (1-5) and he basically stood up there . I agree class was way more enjoyable when nobody had phones. We were a lot more interactive 😁

Can you elaborate on this some more please ? How did the teacher know what number belonged to what student .

my school makes us do this for most classes by the time january came kids just put their case there or put a calculator there most don’t go on our phones but we always listen to music because we work better with music it’s smart but like most of us just feel better our phones in our bag instead of in the class say there is a fire drill or shelter in place sometimes we feel better with our phones

At my high school I’m a senior a senior now and they introduced this freshener year..so we have been doing it for 4 years and no one likes it... but we have never had a problem with phones getting stolen. But when a illness is going around it makes it a lot easier to spread when we are all touching the phone pockets. Keep in mind I go to a small school in winneconne Wisconsin.

My school just takes students phones at the beginning of the day, still at a high school level.

I got the clear ones and numbered them, each student has a number so they put their phone in the matching pocket and since they are clear I can see who's phone is missing

I have the same thing in my classroom. I normally do it for extra credit but midway through the semester students stop using it. Next year I will definitely use it for attendance!!

A teacher I had in highschool set up a shoe rack thing with outlets and things so we could charge our phones and would ask us to preferably leave our phones in the shoe rack and with time we had after we would be able to access our phones. Which worked really well.

Whenever I teach to my Sign Language club, I do see a couple of kids playing on their iPhone or android phone or etc, when I see them playing on it, it breaks my heart that they don’t want to pay attention in my class and they don’t want to either learn Sign Language. So next year, I am going to literally be strict about kids using their iPhone or android when I teach!

My nursing teacher from my vocation program in high school assigned every person a number for class and our phones would go into a box with numbered slots and then they would go in her office on her desk until class was over and the office door locked so worry about someone stealing the phone wasn’t as much of a concern

One of my teachers does this, but it's used if someone uses their phone in class. They get the number card and give it back in order to get their phone.

They do this in my high school, one of my past teachers used it as an attendance method, they also had changers for different phones, if someone didn’t have a phone they got a card that states it, and my school had to drill them to the wall because it fell in one classroom and the school had to buy the student new phones.

i had this my senior yr of high school and everyone got SICK. the spread of germs was insane to the point where people were missing school from being so sick. everyone eventually stopped putting them in the pouches and didn’t really care

I want to be a teacher but I'm never using these. We have them in highschool and they're just annoying. There's no reason people should have to turn in their phone if they aren't on it in the first place and I've found myself often forgetting my phone at the end of the period and having to come back for it. Not to mention that the kids who really want to be on their phone will make some excuse or say they don't have one. It doesn't help anyone.

as a student i would refuse to put my phone in there, i'd be like send me to the dean there's less of a chance of my phone to be stolen if it's held by the dean

I’m a freshman and my teacher does this and I just stopped bringing mine to school one day, because I didn’t feel my locker was safe, and I couldn’t call my mom to pick me up when my ride was late

I noticed as I got older in high school, I became A LOT more lenient with my phones in front of teachers. It was part of just being comfortable around them, it would be on my desk, I wouldn’t be using it but it was good to know it was there because I had my phone stolen quite a few times in high school. I think just building trust would be a good idea, teaching them to be responsible and maintain self control. Just an idea!

My teacher used this for like a week at the end of the year and it didn’t work at all everyone was more unfocused because we were looking to see if our phones where still were they where supposed to be and looking at the time till the class ended so we could get our phones back

Most my teachers did this in there classes and from my experience when I would be nervous that if there was a fire or a lock down that I wouldn’t be able to contact my parents because my teacher said I couldn’t grab my phone. I was also thinking about my phone the whole class to remember to grab it after class.

My school has the shoe pockets but no one uses it because phones constantly get stolen. I think I’m some cases it can be a good idea but in others it’s not. For example I have extremely bad anxiety. Although I never use my phone in school I get extreme anxiety when I have to put it in the pockets.

my english class did this ! and it worked wonderfully mostly!! just be aware of the troubling kids putting just cases in the pocket or cards saying it’s charging when it’s not!

My high school tried this and kids got so pissed we had screaming matches. Like it was horrible. Now if they are out we get 1 warning. After that it goes in the teachers desk till end of class. If it happens often then they get them back at the end of the day.

My 11th grade English teacher did a phone basket, at the begging of class she would collect each phone and keep them in a basket in her draw at her desk so know phones would get stolen. I normally give the students a warning and tell them to keep phones in their pockets if I see it again I'll take it and give it at the end of the class. A majority of the time they keep phones away and in their pockets. They've become comfortable enough to approach me and ask if I can hold their phone if they feel it will become a distraction.

My APUSH teacher did this and no one liked it. It’s basically telling us that we can’t be responsible enough to have our phone ON US WITHOUT using it, but we’re responsible enough to drive a car and be to class on time. I think if you really want to handle the phone situation is if you see it out and then put the phone in the pocket.

My teacher in middle school used them and she put them on the door or like a cabinet that has nothing on the front of it

I’m gonna be a senior this year and freshmen year they put a cellphone rule in our high school like all teachers had to follow. But no one listens to it anymore at all 😂😩 also we had those phone chart things too

It's interesting to hear from a student perspective in these comments. As a teacher and someone on their phone pretty regularly, I see SUCH benefits in having to actually put my phone away. While I get it isn't convenient to do, it does help with the goal of school--learning. Part of attending school, even in high school, is to learn these healthy boundaries for how to act with technology. I do the same thing--kids may not like it BUT they do better and stay more engaged in my class when they put phones up. And for the jokesters who put a fake phone in the slot, WHEN (and I always find out who does this) I find out that they have their phone, it's another conversation! Great work!

Emily Wynn I totally get what you’re saying but I will say that there are a lot of people, including myself, who get a lot of separation anxiety from when away from their phone. It becomes a huge distraction for me because all I can think about is my phone hanging up in a slot and not near me where I could easily access it if needed. There’s also problems with theft that can cause even more worry. Personally, I never do go on my phone in class and this would just become an even bigger distraction for me and many others.

If we got caught with our phones in high school we had to take it to the office and then had to pay $20 to get it back.

If you keep this system up, please use something stronger than staples to hold the pouches to the wall. My school has something like this and they attached it to the board with screws and reassured us countless times that it wouldn’t go anywhere. In my brothers class the pockets fell and some of the cell phones broke. The thing that makes this system work is trust, and once that phone holder fell all that trust is broken and the students refused to put their phones in it after that day.

I had a teacher who did this as an incentive for extra credit and no one did it. Teachers will say your parents will call the school if something happens , no they’ll call me on they phone i paid for. And if there’s a shooter and i don’t have my phone that’s a huge problem 🤷🏻‍♀️

This is so stupid. I literally had two phones so this wouldn’t work. If a teacher tried to take my phone I’d never let. It’s under my name. So is the plan. I dropped out cuz highschool also became crazy. The staff would try to pry into my personal life outside of school! Online school is the best.

Honestly I had lunch detention for a month not turning in my phone but it’s not my fault my mom wants me to have it on me at all times and I don’t even start high school until next year
