Absolutely love the “meet the kids” priority!! 🧡 building that classroom community is so important to start on the very first day, I love the idea of introducing yourself to each student and asking them their name instead of roll calling - I’ve butchered a few names before 🙈🙈🙈

I love the idea that "meet the kids" is the priority. Before the first day of school, I always print out my students' pictures and make flashcards. My goal is to know everyone's name the minute they step into my class. I have about one hundred students and it helps to know their names right off the bat.

This is so great! Thanks for your thoughts! I love the taking roll/get to know the kids strategy. Definitely going to use that tomorrow - my first day of high school English teaching after 23 years of elementary education!

NYC teacher here. I don’t see kids until September 5th, & totally intend to do first day stations after seeing your vlog! We do a ton of station work during the school year, and I think this also sets an expectation of things to come during the year.

Such a small adjustment with taking the roll, but probably has made a huge difference to your students! I love your station ideas. And your classroom! Do all the teachers in your school decorate in the same way? What has the school provided for you versus you’ve provided?

Very great video. Love your passion and enthusiasm. I am a principal at a high school and yea I can tell that I have the least number of teachers comparing to previous years. Wish I can have some teachers like you in my school; maybe come and spend a vacation here on an island in Micronesia. I hope someone can read this and at least to think about it. I am recruiting for teachers now; Science, Math, Language Arts, Social Studies, Mechanic, Carpentry, Agriculture, Food & Nutrition, Sewing, Child Development.

Our first day back is tomorrow. I have 6 stations so I’m a bit nervous. I will also be meeting my kids individually while they complete their stations. I play 2 truths and a lie about myself with my students on the first day. We have a great discussion about books and covers. Then my students do their own 2 truths and a lie. We speed date around the class and attempt to figure out each other’s lie. It all ends with class superlatives like most adventurous, had the most siblings, most likely to get hurt, etc.

Great idea of meet the kids!! Wish that would be something that I could do, but unfortunately we have to do a register on the class board so have no way of getting away with it. BUT my children are a lot younger so might humour me hahah! great video :)

So sorry I did not watch this before prepping my station activities! LOVE your show, Marie! I am excited to meet-and-greet instead of embarrassing students (and myself) during roll call. Did you greet them at the door or visit them in their stations?

No idea if you’ll see this question- did you ever buy the light diffusers for the fluorescent lights in your room? I know you said that you weren’t going to but I’m just curious if you did any update to the lighting for 2019-2020. I’m planning my classroom/lighting decor for the Fall (if we end up going back into the classrooms... fingers crossed!)

I’ve done stations the last two year as well. It definitely makes for a less tiring first day. I’m going to try to remember to sit with the kids and ask their names next year. It embarrasses me and the students to butcher their names. One of my stations was browsing through my class library.

I really like the idea in the comment below of making flashcards to help learn kids' names - maybe we could combine meeting them with making the cards at the same time, so as to include nicknames!
