My Brompton Makes a Horrible Noise | Rear Hub Inspection

Ойын-сауық

Today we take apart and service my Brompton Hub. During my ride to Paris a horrible noise protruded from the rear hub and opening it up it was clear the source of the noise.
Would keep at least 1 to 2 hours for this job aside and don't expect to ride your Brompton just incase something goes wrong or takes longer.
This video was recorded a good while ago and complete forgot to upload it to KZread so here is what I considered a Brompton Guy Original.
UPDATE: I HAD TO OPEN HUB AGAIN AS I USED TO MUCH GREASE IN THE MAIN GEAR CYLINDER.
CLEANED IT A JUST LUBRICATED WITH OIL INSTEAD AND THESE WHEELS CONTINUE TO RUN LIKE NEW.

FWIW: The Brompton Guy's bike has a SRAM (Fichtel&Sachs) T3 hub. The Brompton factory used these hubs for just a few years a couple of decades ago. The T3 was discontinued in 2011 and SRAM ended all IGH production in 2017. Bromptons prior to 2001 used Sturmey-Archer AW hubs; after the T3 years they have used hubs of the Sturmey-Archer AW-NIG design. Just to be clear, the Sturmey-Archer hubs are a different design from a different manufacturer than the SRAM T3 hubs. Disassembly, cleaning, correct lubrication and reassembly/adjustment of Sturmey-Archer hubs is widely documented in innumerable videos and documents.

At a time I thought about buying a small piece "Cleaner/bath" for my dirty bike parts, but I never got that far in my proper "bike building" days! I honestly never have taken an internal hub apart, but when I met my now wife she had a 7 speed bike - and only used one gear all the time, and had it free standing outside our windows! So I took the wheel off, lay it flat and gave it oil through the changer hole, and made the gears change and function properly according to the 7 speed Changer on the handlebar. I bought a new and not broken Changer and a changer cable but sadly missed a functioning connection piece, with room for the cable, till I found one (S.A.) from a Brompton dealer, which functioned! But by then we had become married and I had brought my Superlight fully Shimano XTR MTB in her one large cellar-room, so I have never finished it, as she sadly can't ride a bike anymore, as handicapped! I of course also have my, soon to be at least down to 8,5 kilo Brompton (with mudguards, as a "Rainy Dane"!) 😄. Finn. Denmark

8.5!! Crazy Finn. Also I’ve ordered myself a P line 🫣 so still heavier than your bike but will give me a closer feeling as to the weight of yours mate. Internal hubs can last for so long without maintenance but since cleaning this hub it was amazing to see how smooth it preformed! However these wheels have now been sold on as my bike is now on the 11 speed hub. Hope you’re well friend

@@TheBromptonGuy I still need to change the brackets on my mudguards, to my set of - two aluminum holders for the frame, and my set of small Carbon Clamps (with bolts) for the stays. I have a double wheel on my mudguard and a superlight extender (carbon tube in the middle), with two oversize wheels, as I often use it as a Shopping cart in Supermarkets, but still included in my present weight! I have looked for a possible Flame Painted, Stem Post from titanium (not to look special!), as mine, But I must admit that the price for the few extra gram is absurd then. Finn. Denmark

Nice video as always, I will not mention the pink sleepers , so quickly moving on , break out the whiskey, that hub manufacturer also make a 5 and 8 speed , just trying to think of my options, as mentioned before my ultimate goal is to get a hub from what ever manufacturer that has the same dimensions as the hub already used to be able to have a cog for a belt drive obviously having more internal gears so get rid of external gears , I know the gates belt does not recommend the belt being bent due to warranty but having seen many belt drive systems now on many different types of cycles on some they have a tension arm attachment, that should work well to release the tension are when folding = no bent belts, don’t think there would be an issue with the cogs front and rear seems to be plenty of options , also don’t see an issue with shifting be it manual or electronic, the issue seems to me at least is the hub dimensions because I don’t want to change the rear triangle in anyway , in my head yes I agree it’s like a firework display sorry I digress, I think my ultimate goal is to create a kit so people can swap over their existing bikes easily to a belt drive system be it three or six speed , do you know of a hub that would do what’s in my head ? The bright side we are getting through that whiskey faster than most people , safe riding. Until the next glass of whiskey take care.

Many years ago I had a Strida, with a belt drive. It became my first, my last and my only bike with a belt drive, as it is a heavy functioning system, compared with a chain!

@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 I think the have had a revamp otherwise there’s no other reason why touring, mountain, electric, are year on year have had an increase in belt drive , apart from road bike racing every avenue of the bike industry are going the the belt system.

@@kavanobrien6547 Well it is many years ago, so it may have changed? But I must admit that I can hardly imagine that a belt will function as easy as a chain?

@@finncarlbomholtsrensen1188 Actually the reason why a lot of manufacturers are going to belts is because they are a lot easier than a chain , they last longer , they need no maintenance. So no oil on clothing and overall the weight gain with no chain or derailleur and no chain rings so over all indeed that’s why the manufacturers are increasing with belts and decreasing with chains , as said year on year the belt drive system has gone up across many ranges of bikes .

Thanks for the input as always!! Trying to get through my comments but currently at Kendal mountain festival so been away from home for a while. Once I get some proper downtime I’ll do a proper reply but I’ll certainly grab a whiskey tonight.

Why do you break the chain to take the rear wheel off? It isn't necessary on a Brompton, or any other bike I can think of. In fact, the Brompton needs the chain separating even LESS than other bikes, because the rear wheel can be swung under to make the chain tensioner even easier to release. AND you are using a bike stand, making the wheel underswing ITSELF even easier. (Hmm.. I think I'll skip the rest of the video.)

Thanks for the input. Correct isn't required at all but was taking the chain off to give it a deep clean as it was crying out for it after the miles it covered to Paris. Hope that helps clear it up.

My long late mother had a bike with the the back wheel and fully covered chain-box being mounted in slits from behind. So if needing to take it out, you need to break the chain! I hated mending punctures on her bike!! But the chain was always well oiled!
