The skill floor and ceiling is both astronomical but this seems like a character with a gameplan that's so far out of the field of what everybody is doing that skills you learned while playing before can't be applied and skills you learn while playing can't be applied to anything else. And I think it all starts with awareness of your deck. Given you've got three test cases I'm curious to see in a few years if optimal play isn't going to be constantly keeping internal count across all 3 decks/cases.

Yah. The odds that more than a few spells will be useful is low. Trying to get the most out of all of them will be for the hardest of hardcore specialists I imagine and won't really be a big edge over just figuring out what works for you. The motions will become reflex. You do have to make a lot of decisions during a round, but I don't think it's as execution heavy as people fear.

In an interview that came out shortly after bedman's announcement (i don't remember which website published it but i swear i am not lying) They said that they didn't wanna release the hard characters first like they did in season pass one since (i assume) it scared away the larger Crowds from buying the season pass, so for this season they specifically stated that they wanted to release the easier to access characters first in season 2 (and that worked out pretty well for them imo) so i assume they will follow this pattern continuing into season 3 with whoever the few first are are gonna be relatively simple with a massive curveball at the end of the season
@hambor12

Honestly Zappa fits into both the pool of Historically High-Maintenance Gameplay and Veteran Who Hasn't Returned Yet i maintain that he could be redesigned to not only be themed to newer Jojo parts in terms of aesthetics but also update his Shameless References in his ghosts maybe having an animatronic ghost, 9ft tall woman ghost, VHS invisible ghost, etc. serving a dual purpose of both fitting in with Strive having these updated/modernized aesthetics while also allowing for his ghosts to have different functions by way of being diffferent in theme
I love that from a pure input standpoint he isn't complicated at all and then when you look at what the inputs do.... OH LAWD!
This is what happens when people complain about GGS characters being too simple.
The thing that got me into Guilty Gear and maintains it as my favorite fighting game franchise even above Street Fighter is that it does Rule of Cool the best. Everything about it is just so sick, and Asuka feels like a culmination of that.
This feels weird. Asuka LOOKS complicated, but the more I watch this guide, I feel that Happy Chaos when he's not being played lame and, in my tiny-brained opinion, Goldlewis feel more complex than Asuka. Like he's gonna be hard af to master of course because he's gonna have a huge amount of improv, but playing him casually just comes down to paying attention to what spells you have in stock and you should be mostly fine.
Asuka R# is going to be the nightmare matchup to remember.

“My only complaint is that Asuka is too simple” said no one in the history of guilty gear.
I like how Max further explained that while he likes character complexity, that it can be a bit too much and overwhelming, and there's a delicate balance. Characters can either be too simple and not much fun or they can be too complex and you rather not even bother with them, or the game for that matter.
@MrShisuto
10 ай бұрын
THIS. Asuka is a perfect example of the latter, with people straight up not buying him at all despite his massive relevance to the story and amazing design. Sure, with time you can learn to manage his playstyle, but why would people want to be constantly exhausted setting up and executing moves rapidly in their minds while also trying to micro manage 3 different things on screen? This is why the majority dropped Asuka after the novelty wore off and went back to their mains.
I like how in TCG terms you can switch your Asuka deck based on the matchup. Invest into either dumping your deck with multiple chant, float spells with bookmark so you can build and ideal hand, or side deck into the appropriate matchup with change test case.
Poor Max, he still hasn’t mentally recovered from the Mario 64 Half-A press video lol.
I’m honestly surprised he’s not even more complex, I fully expected him to have all of this + 12 other unique mechanics and resources to manage

I feel like a large chunk of Asuka's spells do boil down to projectiles that you dont have to think much about.
@alpha-tomahawk532
Жыл бұрын
And then you have staffs that accelerate, deaccelerate, or pull in every kind of projectile... and then you have to think how that combos and which projectile better with which staff and what you can do afterwards... and of course it matters because it's guilty gear and each projectile has some kind of special property or frame advantage... great, that's about 1/4 of a case out of 3 of them done, we're doing great progress!

This is a really good simulation of being told the rules to a trading card game
Shang tsung from MK and Amakusa from Samsho also fall under this. Mages/sorcerers are just badass.
I’m pretty sure I’d have an easier time understanding Asuka’s moveset and gameplay than whatever I learned in the second half of chemistry class in college this year.
I love these types of high speed spell slinging characters in fighting games. Wizard from yomi and Asuka are both so epic. Need to try him out asap
I love how the first 2 test cases have specific functions, and then the third one is just "I dunno, here's a bunch of weird shit."

Seems an interesting take on the zoner architype. Instead of just staying away and shooting projectiles, you've a management system that both keeps you on your toes and gives good mixup opportunities to throw the opponent off.
All these move names, mechanics, and inputs are like the slowed down version of what non FGC people think they hear when they hear the commentarry for an intense match.

If at any point you found yourself screaming as loud as possible mentally, then Daisuke's job is already done. Probably hands down the most complicated character we've ever seen in not just an Arc System Works game, but just in any fighting game. The best I can think of that probably comes to mind for "complex characters" (outside of ASW titles), probably would be Gargos and/or Eyedol from KI since you had their movesets for bosses that did some crazy things like "teleport punches, minion summoning, and smack yourself to change movesets." I loved watching them in action, but man if we see some players pick up "That Man" and hit Top 8, we are going to see some really insane stuff.
Every time I see his Starter Guide I see a new move, that I haven‘t realized before lol
This dude is going to be a menace, i feel it. I am getting HC vibes from peoples reactions (pre-release). Too complicated, too much management etc. Well, people figured out HC and they will figure out this guy, and if someone was able to master all of these spells, using them as they come in optimal ways, I can see it being very strong.
Just the special cancels alone have my brain hurting
Asuka: Its time to duel, Kaiba. Sol: Who the hell is Kaiba? Asuka: EXODIA, OBLITERATE!
Asuka is big brain and several things to keep track of he's a character with tools for every situation but with rng luck is the key but for me I make use of the cards in my hand
The kind of character I’ll never play but will love to watch get played by a master
"random bullshit go!" moment intensifies!
I think Asuka will be okay to pick up as he only has a couple of inputs and most seem pretty safe from the gameplay, the complex part is doing any of his stuff well and memorizing the spells, test cases and what to cancel to when throwing spells, I know that my dumbass will accidentally sacrifice my health for mana when I don't need to and die from it
Ahead of SF6's release, I've been getting a bunch of fighting games I missed out on (most recent was KI) and was pondering Guilty Gear Strive until I noticed Mortal Kombat XL on sale. Never played a GG, but was into the original MK trilogy back in the day, so I'm hoping the MKX file isn't still bloated with MK11 ads 😂
pretty cool i can use tension to charge up my mana. Been practicing not relying on absolute defense or (whatever it was called) as much and ive had some extra tension.
As a mage main / faust main for all fighting games this seems great even though i haven't played strive in some time
Hero in smash plays almost like that. You gotta use a special to open a menu with spells and pick the best one, or cancel to use again , while managing mana.

This is the character that Desk would use and make up insane Touch of Death combos with.
Not gonna lie this mans pretty fun so far even if I have no idea what I’m doing half the time! Also that theme is a bop as per usual
Whenever Asuka +R uses a spell.... something good happens.
One thing I don't see anyone mentioning: Yes he has big massive list of spells he can use, but what nobody has pointed out is that they specifically call out him having moves on 4 and 6 for all non-Dust attack buttons; he will have hands down the most command normals out of any character that's ever added to the game unless they start using 1 or 3 normals again
god his throw animation is so fucking cool
This is gonna be that character that everyone tries very few main
Comparing him to an MMO character is pretty on point. It feels like you logged into your friend's level 140 character in an MMO you've never played and you go do your first raid.
@Maximilian Where is that opening song from ? What is it called ?
Already I love that character!! He reminds me of Rinwell from Tales of Arise.
Seeing some Krollo with the bookmarks
When we getting an MMO class that fills it's hotbars in real time with single use abilities while you battle? Sounds fun!
the closest i have seen for a complicated character that felt sensible was Dante in MVC3. he has bajillion specials, but its easy enough to understand the execution based on what everything is attached to move-wise.
Mama there goes that man
I can finally count cards in a fighting game! Thanks Daisuka
You know that meme when someone is trying to think and there's a lot of math equations appearing and fading everywhere. That's me with this character.
That Man literally came to the game ready to duel with cards in hand. He's going to be a handful for both players..
Absolutely hit the nail on the head. They put a BlazBlue character in Guilty Gear Strive. Dude looks so nutty, can't wait to try him out! Also as a Leo main, I cry XD
"Character Ability Manager" really does sound like a job title, which feels accurate, since you probably need to practice like it's a full-time job to truly master Asuka.
FINALY a Guilty Gear Character. Unique crazy mechanics, style and rocknroll.
GGS players: can we get someone a little more complicated? *lights dim* Daisuke: Son, you know once you start there's no going back... This mean total commitment. Once you begin the path, there is no leaving the path. Are you sure you're ready for that? I mean really ready?..
